The NAMI-NYC Helpline staff and volunteers are First Responders for those seeking help, offering a lifeline for New Yorkers needing support for themselves or a loved one experiencing mental illness.

Most people first connect with NAMI-NYC through a call to our Helpline. When someone calls, they get access to our vast array of family and individual services, all offered free of charge, as well as referrals and information for other community services. But most importantly, they get support. Everyone who answers our Helpline truly understands what you’re going through — because they’ve been there. All of our services are provided by people with lived experience, either as a family member or someone living with a mental health condition themselves. For many callers, this is the first time they feel hope — they learn they are not alone, and we have a welcoming community they can be a part of. Many of our long-time volunteers — and even staff — first connected with NAMI-NYC when they called the Helpline in need of assistance.

If the Helpline is NAMI-NYC’s front door, your support directly impacts the people who ring our doorbell. And helps support the people who answer the door. We invite you to support NAMI-NYC’s vital and unique peer-led services, and join us as we celebrate the NAMI-NYC Family.

What your support means to NAMI-NYC: Underwriter of 2,500 Helpline Hours. You enable us to provide 6 months of Helpline support. When a family member calls looking for ways they can help their ill relative, a Helpline responder might recommend the caller take Family-to-Family, our evidence-based education class for family, friends, and other relatives of individuals living with mental health challenges.

What your support means to NAMI-NYC: Underwriter of 1,500 Helpline Hours. When a parent of a teen or tween calls looking for support, a Helpline responder might recommend NAMI Basics, our education class for parents and caregivers of young people struggling with mental health or behavioral challenges.

What your support means to NAMI-NYC: Underwriter of 1,000 Helpline Hours. Helpline responders refer callers to our 30+ monthly, ongoing support groups, including Black Minds Matter, a new group offering support to individuals who identify as Black and living with mental health challenges.

What your support means to NAMI-NYC: Underwriter of 1,000 Helpline Hours. Helpline responders refer callers to our evidence-based education classes, including Peer-to-Peer for LGBTQ+, a class for - and taught by - individuals who identify as LGBTQ+ and are living with mental health challenges.

What your support means to NAMI-NYC: Underwriter of 500 Helpline Hours. Helpline responders refer callers to the kind of one-on-one support and mentoring they need, including connecting parents through Parent Match, and other family members and caregivers through Family Match.
