McGowan’s Musings
Well I hope you haven’t missed us too much
over our seasonal break, and that you’ve all
had good summers (so far…) from both
professional and personal points of view.
The Festivals have had mixed fortunes, the
sun shone on many, but the rain also chose
to drop in in many cases. I attended EXIT in
Novi Sad, Serbia, which was rained on for
the first time in many years, Way Out West in
Gothenburg, Sweden which had some pretty
heavy downpours (Thanks for the rain jacket
Luger!), as did Sziget in Budapest, Hungary,
(when did I last see a taxi queue that long!)
however all three continued in good spirits
and were definitely successful. I had a great
time at these events and would like to thank
everyone for faultless and very thoughtful
hospitality! However, not everyone was so
lucky, although water was an important
part of proceedings at the surfing themed
Boardmasters 2014, there was too much,
particularly when accompanied by high
winds; organisers of the festival at Watergate
near Newquay, in Cornwall U.K., said the
“magnitude of the conditions is too severe
for the arena site to be opened. Campers at
the Watergate site reported waterlogged
conditions and about 20 tents blown away.
Of course the recent months have been
dominated by man-made disasters causing
far worse consequences than this season’s
bad weather. Cancelled shows are of course
far less important than the daily reports of
wide scale death, injury and destruction in far
too many places, but the scrapping of events
that, like festivals, are meant to bring people
together to share enjoyment and stimulation
are of course to be regretted. Although
there is no official cultural boycott of Israel
for example, artists are pulling shows for
reasons of caution, and presumably in some
cases protest, at the Israeli action in Gaza.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Backstreet Boys,
Brian Jonestown Massacre, America Cee-Lo
Green and Megadeth have cancelled shows
in Israel. Israeli promoter Carmi Wurtman
told Billboard that festivals had been hit,
too, with police refusing to grant permits for
outdoor gatherings. He added that insurance
premiums had also increased. “Lloyd’s of
London will sell it to you, but it’s so expensive
it’s not worthwhile. There’s always a Russian
roulette element to concert promotion, but
this is like playing with two bullets.” Perhaps
the analogy is not the best with rockets,
missiles and real bullets taking a dreadful toll
of lives every day in Gaza, Israel and Iraq, Syria,
Ukraine etc.
While all this goes on, I suppose those of
us that are fortunately not located in these
trouble spots can do little more than count
ourselves lucky, exercise caution, perhaps offer
whatever help we can and get on with things
like entertaining people and hopefully making
life better! Festivals are good for this, and
many, such as Denmark’s Roskilde, do even
more good by raising large amounts of money
for philanthropic purposes, and many such
as EXIT (which also raised money for Flood
relief this year.), Sziget and others started as
gatherings in protest against aggression and
unacceptable political situations. The number
of festivals is definitely on the rise, hopefully
for good reasons! I note that DJ and festival
organiser Rob Da Bank is intending to add
more by taking his Bestival franchise to North
America and more sites in Europe. Presumably
once he’s got this year’s 50,000 capacity tenth
edition of Bestival on the Isle of Wight from
4-7 September out of the way!
Right, I’ve gone on a bit I realise, but with the
best of intentions! I’ll no doubt see some of
you in Hamburg for Reeperbahn in a couple
of weeks, but in the meantime, Ladies and
Gentlemen – the News!

The Artists and their associated Companies who will benefit from
the Music Export Growth Scheme jointly administered by The BPI
and UK Trade & Investment have been announced.
The scheme offers grants of between £5000 and £50,000 to UK
music companies - including labels and management agencies - to
aid international touring, artist promotion and music projects.
Dry The River, Imogen Heap, The Wytches, Hadouken and Fink are
all on the list of artists and bands set to benefit from the scheme’s
third cycle, which coincides with recent stats released by the BPI
indicating that British acts’ international appeal is still on a high, with
one in eight LPs sold worldwide credited to a Brit act.
John Kennedy, Chair of the Music Export Growth Scheme, says this:
“As we announce the results of our recent round of funding and
move to our new invitation for applications we are beginning to see
the results of this commitment by the government to our industry”.
He continued: “We are seeing the money being successfully used as
seed money to launch or build on international careers, whether by
way of sales or synchronisation licences, live appearances, expanded
profile or strategic promotional activities - indeed the variety of
uses that successful applicants are making of the funds is itself a
testament to the innovation that these grants can drive, enhance
and encourage”.
The full list of funded artists and their business partners is as follows...

Following the failure of this year’s event,
the Company behind north London’s multi-
venue Camden Crawl festival has collapsed
with debts of more than £100,000.
Promoted as CC14, the festival took place
from 20-21 June but a lack of ticket sales
forced promoter Crawl Promotions (CP)
into liquidation last month (as reported in
LIVE UK issue 174), with artistes and venues
being unpaid.
According to liquidator Nicholas Barnett
of insolvency specialist Libertas Associates
Crawl Promotions Ltd owed a total of
£165,105, with £58,501 in assets available
for preferential creditors.
Artistes including Headliner ABC, Montreal’s
Kevin Barnes, Yuck, Steve Mason, Mouse on
Mars and Lauren Halo and others are owed
£14,400. Other creditors include wristband
supplier ID&C, SECUREticket, and graphic
and web designer Craig Gell, as well as
venues the Electric Ballroom, Koko and the
Roundhouse.
CPL director and shareholder Lisa Paulon
issued a statement saying ticket sales had
fallen “far short of expectations”, leaving
CPL “unable to pay its debts in full to any
suppliers, staff or the company’s directors
and shareholders”, a situation she described
as “completely unanticipated”.
Camden Crawl started up in 1995 in the
autumn, before moving to May, then back to
October in 2013 before becoming a summer
event this year. Acts that showcased over
the years included Adele, Florence & The
Machine and Amy Winehouse, who by the
way, will have a statue unveiled in Camden
on 14 Sep, what would have been her 31st
birthday.

Festival reports:First Edition of Way Out West Music Conference Takes Place in GothenburgAllan McGowan [email protected]
Sweden’s first Music Seminar took place
on the 8th and 9th of August at the Way
Out West Festival in Gothenburg. However,
as previously announced in the May issue
of VIP News, FKP Scorpio is joining the
showcase conference circuit by creating
a Swedish event in Norrköping during its
Bravalla Festival next February, which of
course means that the country will have two
events, and why not?
But for now, as organiser Patrick Fredriksson
of Stockholm based Luger, told VIP News,
Way Out West delivered a very successful
first edition.
“This was an amazing first year for the Way
Out West Music Conference; over 1.000
attendees over the two days and a great
start in bringing together the Swedish and
the international music industry to network.
The Highlights were of course the
festival booking panel, The Art of Festival
Programming, with Natasha Haddad
(Latitude Festival UK), Fra Soler (Primavera
Sound – Spain), Natalie Ryan-Williams
(Way Out West), Lizzie Newton (SXSW
US) & Donna Busch (Coachella Festival
US). Bookers of some of the best festivals
around the world gathered to discuss
programming. Then Festival Principals
and Principles, brought together the main
inspiration for Way Out West to exist,
Henrik Rasmussen of Roskilde, and the
renowned source of festival knowledge
and creative development Melvin Benn of
Festival Republic.
The panel about songwriting asked if
there’s a Swedish way to write music, with
among others, Björn Ulvaeus of Abba. This
was mentioned by many as one of the best
panels they’ve ever seen. (Sadly, much
as I was there to chair the festival panels I
managed to get delayed enough to just miss
this much talked about session! – Ed.). As
Tim Ingham from Music Week said. Way
Out West Music Conference will be one
of these events where you will brag in the
future about attending the first one. And of
course Sweden’s own Spotify participated
with among others Nordic MD Jonathan
Forster discussing plans for the future.
Göteborg (Gothenburg) was a great host
and this new leg for Way Out West will for
sure be the beginning of a new era. Sweden
has finally it’s own Music Seminar.”

VIP-Booking.com General Manager Peter
Briggs comments on his visit to this year’s
edition of Denmark’s Roskilde Festival:
For a second year Roskilde 2014 was again
blessed with fantastic weather, adding to
the already unique experience provided by
the arrangers. Very few festivals I’ve visited
pay so much attention to creating such a
good experience and atmosphere for the
audience, providing a wide and diverse
selection of restaurants, bars and cozy areas
all set off by colourful and atmospheric
lighting in both the main festival area and
backstage. I never cease to be amazed at
how well everything seems to run and how
little trouble there seems to be in comparison
to the crime statistics often reported during
an average weekend in a town populated
by a similar amount of people. Although the
31.000 volunteers (yes 31.000!) certainly
play their part in keeping order there’s still
something to be said about easing the
restrictions on from people’s lives and just
letting them do it their own way.
This year saw The Rolling Stones play under
the orange canopy, which was originally
designed for the band in the UK for their
1976summer tour, although this present
canopy is a new larger version designed
in 2001. The Stones performance set the
stage for a special experience for the
band, the festival and the audience. With
other headliners including Arctic Monkeys,
Damon Albarn, Stevie Wonder, Jack White,
Major Lazer and Danish act Trentemoller -
this year’s festival broke the all time record
with over 100.000 tickets sold meaning that
the festival expects to be able to donate
approximately 2.5 million euro to charity
and cultural purposes.
The team at Denmark’s Roskilde Festival, undoubtedly one of the world’s leading outdoor events,as well as being one of greatest contributors to charitable causes on an international scale, has remained pretty constant for a good few years, but the recent announcement by the well known and respected Rikke Oxner that she was stepping down from her latest position as Artistic Director has led to a ‘shuffle’ in the management team. VIP spoke to Roskilde’s Anders Wahren about his past, present and future work with the Festival:
VIP News: How long have you been
involved with Roskilde, and what is
your background?
Anders Wahren: I grew up with Roskilde
festival, my first year was 1996 when I was
only 13, and started working as a volunteer
in 2001, alongside working at a local
Roskilde venue. I went on to skip my studies
and take a job at Roskilde Festival where I
booked bands from 2004 to 2007, focusing
on Scandinavian acts and upcoming Danish
acts. After a 3½ year stint at Live Nation
Denmark, where I developed a roster of
local talents as well as played a central role in
the startup of their now 5-year strong metal
festival Copenhell, I returned to Roskilde
in the spring of 2011 to take a new role as
head of music booking, to allow Rikke to
concentrate on management duties.
VIP News: Since your return what areas
of the event’s development have you
been concentrating on?
Wahren: Over this last 3½ years, besides
actual music booking, I have focused
Catchingup with RoskildeAllan McGowan [email protected]

VIPNEWS > AUGUST 2014 > INDEPTH STORY > FESTIVAL REPORTS
on developing our artistic profile that
also consists of street art, installations,
performance, literature and much more.
As well as the way we combine art forms,
production and the general identity of the
festival.
VIP News: Will you be taking on Rikke’s
role when she steps down?
Wahren: Rikke had moved from heading
the music booking to a less hands on role
as Artistic Director. I will not take over the
full responsibilities, but I have taken over
the responsibility of programming all of our
artistic content – music and other art forms
– with the brilliant teams that make the
festival stand out.
VIP News: From your point of view was
this edition particularly successful and
what stood out for you. Do you have
any specifically memorable moments
from previous editions?
Wahren: This was a very successful year
for us, not only because of a strong line-
up and remarkable ticket sales, but also
because we (again) introduced new stages,
developed a new Art area, put even more
focus on our massive Street Art project
and even with a late cancellation from a
headliner like Drake, we managed to keep
Jack White in Europe for an extra show. All
in all our volunteers impressed once again
and delivered the special Roskilde vibe with
outstanding moments like Damon Albarn’s
Arena show, the Atomic Bomb! Tribute to
William Onyeabor, an exstatic party with
Major Lazer and more intimate sets ranging
from beautiful quiet moments with Aoife
O’Donovan via Maya Jane Coles electronic
touch to extreme hardcore from Nails.
Everyone from artists to audience and press
have given nothing but great feedback, so
we are very happy and eager to follow up
in 2015.
VIP News: Do you see any changes
being made in the future running of
the Festival or does the present formula
continue to work successfully?
Wahren: The good thing about the present
formula is that it is actually always a
changing event. Sure, the main lines stay
pretty much the same, but we have a history
of killing some of our darlings (stages, a
cinema, certain areas etc.) to make room
for new things. And as far as the musical
profile goes, we take pride in the fact that
we are one of the most varied and diverse
festivals in the world, and I don’t see that
changing. I think it’s interesting to see all
the more genre-specific festivals popping
up, but diversity has always been the key
for Roskilde, and that’s also a big part of
attracting the many different audience
types we have and who create the special
atmosphere at Roskilde. The ability to
change really is a big part of the key to
success and goes hand in hand with the
great deal of involvement from both the
hundreds of volunteers who devote time to
work with Roskilde Festival all year around
and the co-creation with our guests.
Congratulations for the success of this year’s
Roskilde are in order, but also, on a more
personal level, the whole VIP team would
like to congratulate Anders Wahren and his
wife on the very recent birth of their second
son, and Rikke Oxner on her equally recent
marriage!
Sziget 2014 - Wonderland In HungaryManfred Tari [email protected]
One of the most outstanding music festivals
within the European landscape of open-air
events, the 22nd edition of Sziget was very
successful, breaking visitor records.
In total the organizers recorded 415.000
visitors with an audience peak of 85.000
visitors on Thursday, August 14 with among
others Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Stromae
and Lily Allen as headliners.
Sziget is a sort of European music event
masterpiece, quite exceptional in terms of
its settings and it’s so to say ‘spirit’, which
appears to be rather more philosophical
than political, but nevertheless due to
this attitude manages to express political
statements.
Much more than many other events it
is in line with its current self-declared
description, “The Island Of Freedom”. It is
in many ways a very colourful event. This
goes for the music program as well as for
the many program elements such as “Cirque
Du Sziget”, “Flag Party”, “Balloon Party”,
“Beach Ball Party”, and its tribute for the
anniversary of the Rubik Cube called, “Rubik
Sziget and the Tent of Logic Games”, plus its
dedication to “green measures”.

location. It remains a bit of a miracle and its
probably all down to massive efforts, but
this festival is one of the cleanest large scale
events in Europe. There is almost no waste
to be seen on the site. Instead there are
plenty of dustbins and other opportunities
to appropriately get rid of litter. Also the
amount of toilets was sufficient, of course
allowing for queues, when one of the acts
finished their concert....
Besides all this and particularly amongst
the many international music industry
guests, one of the topics discussed was
the current political situation in Hungary.
The nationalistic government of the lawyer
and populist Victor Orban of the Fidesz
Party, and the success of the right wing
party Jobic in Hungary has caused concern
among those who rather are in favour of
democratic policies.
At the Sziget press conference the issue of
the departure of the Roma-Stage was also
mentioned. The organizers explained that
they had taken care to retain the Roma
presence embedding its music program
within the Worldmusic stage due to
economic reasons.
However, the political situation in a country
isn’t something a festival can be blamed for.
And let’s face it, the Frequency Festival in
Austria or Midem in France are also not to
blame for the success of anti-democratic
parties such as the FPÖ or the National Front
in those countries.
Sometimes small gestures illustrate the
humanitarian vibe of or around Sziget. At
the press conference two people from the
Ukraine approached the Sziget organizers
and handed over a collage painting
expressing how delighted they were with
the vibe of Sziget. They ventured their wish
that Sziget could sooner or later promote an
edition of this event in the Ukraine.
Also during the press conference the
question of a comparison between Sziget
and Tomorrowland in Belgium was raised.
In fact this comparison is definitely very
unlikely and as somebody mentioned
afterwards Tomorrowland is a sort of
Disneyland while Sziget has a very authentic
identity of its own.
The total conclusion is that Sziget is very
well designed and a very properly produced
and programmed open air event. The
international line up is impressive and the
highly international audience mix of people
from all over Europe mainly, says even more
about why this festival is so successful.
Sziget is just far more than only its music
program. It works as it is in terms of its
many aspects which offer much more than
just only music.
Karoly Gerendai, main organizer and
founder of the event commented: “Booking
a strong international line-up has been quite
a challenge in the last few years, but we
also aimed to make Sziget an extraordinary
visual experience and to further improve our
services. This year’s Sziget was definitely
more appealing than ever before and we
got great feedback both from the fans and
the professionals. If they are happy, we are
happy, so again we would like to thank
everybody for coming!”
One tiny complaint, in the past Sziget
was maybe a bit more exciting in the
variety of food stands. In the years before
Sziget successfully implemented its RFID
cashless payment system there were
more exceptional food stands. Karoly
Gerendai who besides running Sziget also
has a restaurant which has been awarded
a Michelin one star plus a Gaut Miliau
recommendation, could probably come up
with some good possibilities!
The dates for Sziget 2015 are set August
10-17. For follow ups and backstage videos

For the first time the 19th edition of Juicybeats Festival in Dortmund
reported a sold out success. The one-day event takes places in
the Westfalenpark, a park pretty much embedded within the city
centre of Dortmund. For its current edition of the event on July 26
the promoter Popmodern reported attendance of 33.000 visitors.
For the upcoming edition in 2015, the organizers announced the
addition of a second day in order to celebrate its 20th anniversary
edition.
This event dedicates its stages to fruits. On the apple, or main, stage
bands like Boys Noize, Alligatoah and Milky Chance appeared. The
festival-concept foresees 25 stages and floors, hosting DJs and live
acts, partnered and presented by the radio station Funkhaus Europa,
WDR, or by dance labels such as Kittball or local venues.

FKP Scorpio’s packed festival season began
on May 23rd with the Elbjazz Festival at
the Port of Hamburg in Germany and ended
on Sunday, August 17th with the conclusion
of the Highfield Festival in Leipzig and the
20-year anniversary edition of the Chiemsee
Summer also in Germany. All in all, the
Hamburg-based company was involved in
organizing seven festivals in Germany and six
in other European countries in 2014.
Between May and August FKP Scorpio
was responsible for the planning and the
execution of the Hurricane and Southside
in June, which both broke records in being
sold out earlier than ever before. The
Deichbrand Festival in July and the M’era
Luna both in Germany in August were also
ultimately classified as “Sold Out” by the
time of each festival weekend.
The festivals that FKP Scorpio organized
together with local partners in other European
countries , were also largely successful:
The Greenfield Festival in Switzerland in
June celebrated its 10th anniversary with
Linkin Park, Iron Maiden, Soundgarden, and
Dropkick Murphys and others. On the same
weekend, festival visitors to Indian Summer
in the Netherlands were entertained by Lily
Allen, Milow, Tom Odell, Birdy, Chase & Status
and various well-known Dutch acts. The
Northside festival was sold out early on and
hosted a party for 30,000 visitors in ongoing
beautiful weather with performances by
Lana del Ray, The National, WhoMadeWho,
Arcade Fire, Queens Of The Stone Age and
alongside other Danish and international
acts. A week later - from June 20th – 22nd
- the Best Kept Secret took place in the
Netherlands at the same time as the Hurricane
and Southside in Germany with Elbow, Franz
Ferdinand, Interpol, Lykke Li or the Pixies. In
Sweden, the second edition of the Bravalla
festival attracted 60,000 visitors, way more
people than last year. Finally the Get Away
Rock Festival in Sweden in August, marked
the guitar-dominated conclusion of the FKP
Scorpio festival season outside of Germany.
Then back to Germany for the sold-out
Highfield festival with 25,000 festival fans
for Macklemlore & Ryan Lewis, Placebo,
Queens Of The Stone Age, Blink 182. The
event also boasted one of only two exclusive
festival performances by the Beatsteaks,
whose lead singer Arnim Teutoburg-Weiß
summed it up the best by saying that “there
are many festivals, but none like Highfield!”
at the Störmthaler lake in Germany. 500
km further south saw the celebration of the
Chiemsee Summer festival and its sold

out 20th anniversary edition. For its birthday
Chiemsee Rocks and Chiemsee Reggae
Summer were merged into a 5-day festival
which extended its musical program to
include electronic music.
The five stage attracted around 35,000
visitors daily to the site; even though the
weather conditions were quite unfriendly.
But everybody who persevered through
Sunday was finally rewarded, with a sunny
day and party mood performances by
Marteria and Paul Kalkbrennner.
FKP Scorpio’s founder and MD Folkert
Koopmans said, “We are very pleased with
the outcome of this festival season.
Almost all events have fulfilled our
expectations. We would have been
happier about more visitors only for
the Indian Summer and Get Away
Rock. But over half of the events
organized by us were sold out, some,
like the Hurricane and Southside now
even already several times in a row.
The Highfield this year saw its first
sellout, since we moved to Leipzig in
2010 and we are particularly pleased
about this development. We are also
very pleased that the new concept of
the Chiemsee Summer was so well
received.”

The EXIT Festival staged in the fortress
on the island in the Danube at Novi Sad,
Serbia, is always an adventure, but this the
adventure was extended to three events in
two countries: On the 11th of June Rock@
EXIT took place, followed by EXIT itself from
10-13 July, then Sea Dance on the beach in
Montenegro from 15-17th July. A total of
over 260 000 adventurers enjoyed all three
of the events and over140, 000 Euros was
raised for Flood Relief Aid.
During these memorable eight days EXIT
offered festival-goers a wide range of music
and entertainment with performances
by some of the world’s best music stars
including; Damon Albarn, Jamiroquai,
Skrillex, Rudimental live, Queens of the
Stone Age, Disclosure, Afrojack, Pet Shop
Boys, Underworld, Gloria Gaynor, Hurts,
Suede, Stromae, Example, Carl Cox, Deep

and many others! The organisers however
commented that the biggest star of EXIT
festival was, as always, its loyal audience.
The biggest audience ever kept partying

Main Stage on the stunning Jaz beach. In
addition to Sea Dance Festival, EXIT stayed
true to it’s roots and helped to raise money
for the flood victims in the Balkans, which
saw the worst floods in more than a century
and a state of emergency was declared in 14
municipalities. Numerous cities and villages
were lost, dozens of people lost their lives,
and over one million people were evacuated.
“BE HUMAN” was hosted by Jamiroquai
and Example and was part of the EXIT
foundation’s EXIT AID programme, which
aimed to raise money for the flood relief
efforts in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina,
and Croatia. BE HUMAN was held in
collaboration with the Municipality of Budva
and Dukley Gardens, and supported by the
Government of the Republic of Serbia, the
Government of Montenegro, Budva Tourism
organization and Hipotekarna Bank. Taking
place in the luxurious Dukley Gardens
complex, Jamiroqui and Example performed
a special DJ set, which helped raise over
140.000 Euros, and 80,000 Euros in goods
for flood relief efforts. More info here:

Dušan Kovačević, founder and director
of the EXIT festival, spoke at the charity
gathering: “I’m pleased to see the EXIT
Adventure end with a charity event, the
goal of which is to help those who were
affected by the catastrophic floods that
hit the region a month and a half ago.
Social betterment is at the heart of EXIT
Festival, so we’re glad that we’re able to
say goodbye to this year’s adventure this
way, and we’ll definitely see you all next

VIPNEWS > AUGUST 2014 > INDEPTH STORY > FESTIVAL REPORTS
The change of dates and a revamp of the
event by the c/o pop music convention in Co-
logne appears to have produced heightened
awareness, achieving better results. The date
for the convention was moved from June to
August 20-24, and the event dropped it for-
mer congress format “c’n’b’” and took a new
stakeholder on board.
In his opening speech for this eleventh
edition, the Minister of Economy of
Northrhine-Westphalia, Garrelt Duin
concluded that c/o pop could no longer be
viewed as a ‘One-Hit-wonder’. This is in fact
a little surprising as Duin had never previously
undertaken the sort of efforts instituted by
some of his predecessors in the nineties,
when, in particular, the NRW Ministry of
Economy was one of the first of its kind to
proactively and substantially fund the since
departed music convention Popkomm.
However, Duin may have been surprised
and alerted by the sort of support made
available to the music industry by political
bodies in Berlin and Hamburg. Until now the
Minister has not been known for being very
innovative in making support available for
the music sector.
Anyhow, this edition of c/o pop apparently
went well, the organizers have reported a
total of 30.000 festivalgoers and 950 trade
visitors for its conference program. As part
of the program c/o pop focused on the
liaison of brands and the music industry.
We will hopefully feature an interview with
the organisers in a future issue.
The next dates for c/o pop are August 19. bis
23. 2015, for more information please check

VIPNEWS > AUGUST 2014 UPCOMING EVENTS
This year’s edition of the Reeperbahn Festival
will take place from 17–20 September.
The Hamburg based event has established
itself as one of the most important music
industry platforms in Europe, and has
evolved to present a business programme
involved with a wide scope of creative
and digital industries as well as the music
industry, and international musical culture.
Germany’s largest club festival presents
established and newcomer acts in more
than 600 wide-ranging events in over 70
venues, plus an extensive arts programme.
VIP News spoke with co-founder and
Conference organiser Detlef Schwarte:
VIP News: The pressure must really be on
now with only three weeks or so to go?
Detlef Schwarte: Certainly, as the conference
grows every year we have to find new
solutions; many elements of the seminars
etc are not confirmed till quite late, then
we have a lot to announce, creating a bit
of a ‘news jam’! Although we start making
announcements in May, we are constantly
updating.
VIP News: How many panels and
meetings will you have this year, and
how are the attendance figures looking?
Schwarte: We will present nearly 100
sessions, and registrations and ticket sales
are looking very good, so we really expect
the conference attendance to increase
significantly on last year. It will certainly
be worth coming to Hamburg for the
Conference because the programme is even
better than last year. Many of the speakers
are very high level, with a couple of dozen
that would merit keynote presentations.

VIP News: Would you like to mention
some of them?
Schwarte: Sure, amongst others we have
Geche Joost from the German Government,
she is a digital champion for the country,
often addressing gatherings of 3000
people in Brussels and elsewhere; also
from the US we have Amelia Showalter,
an advisor to Barrack Obama in his 2012
campaign. Also we have music supervisor
Thomas Golubic, responsible for the music
content of Breaking Bad and other major
TV series, Ralph Simon, an international
specialist in mobile entertainment, Dave
Allen of Beats Music, formerly a member
of the band Gang of Four, and Rob Hallet,
ex head of touring for AEG Live. We also
have CEO level speakers from Companies
like Deezer, Napster etc.
VIP News: How about the plans for the
Festival?
Schwarte: Well as far as the many acts
appearing you’d be best to speak to our
booker Bjørn Pfarr, but I can confirm
that the festival has expanded to four
days. On the Wednesday we will present
up and coming German bands in the
Wunderkinder shows, and international
acts will also appear.
VIP News: Due to developments and
rebuilding in and around the traditional
heart of the Festival in Spielbudenplatz
you have lost a number of venues, how
have you compensated for that?
Schwarte: Yes, we have unfortunately lost
4 or 5 venues, but we have managed to
locate showcases on the other side of the
Reeperbahn. Also our showcase partners
have found more venues and we’re sure
that we will maintain our usual festival
atmosphere. The good news is that for our
tenth anniversary next year we will have
access to six new venues, three smaller
clubs with around 200 capacities, two larger
at 400, and a new theatre venue. We will
arrange guided tours of these this year for
anyone interested.

Just before going to press Detlef
Schwarte contacted Vip News to
confirm that Herbert Grönemeyer
will be the subject of a keynote
interview at Reeperbahn. Gröne-
meyer is one of the most promi-
nent singers in Germany. His long
and successful career includes
Germany’s best selling album
ever,”Mensch”, which has sold
more than 3.1 million copies. He is
also the owner of the label ‘Grön-
land’ which has recently helped to
pave the way for succesful artists
such as Boy and Philipp Poisel.
First We Take Berlin, the showcase festival of Berlin Music Week
will take place on 4 and 5 September in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg.
More than 50 international artists will be presented in collaboration
with The Great Escape, Canadian Music Week, Nordic by
Nature, the Africa Music Convention and many others. Leading
agencies The Agency Group, Coda Agency and ATC will showcase
their current rosters, and Bureau Export France will present ‘French
Connection’ a programme of French artists.
The Berlin FESTIVAL will have a new home this year. From 5 to 7
September the festival will take place at the Arena Park for 48
hours non-stop.

Paul Cheetham has contacted VIP News, stating: “I will be leaving
my position as International Relations Coordinator for Berlin
Music Week at the conclusion of my current contract at the end
of September 2014. With the management of the event changing
hands once again this year it is an ideal time to re-evaluate the
situation and it feels right to be stepping out of the project after this
year’s event.” …..Don’t let this stop you coming to see us at Berlin
Music Week this year though! It takes place 03-07 September and it
really is going to be great

The Colisium Music and Media Conventions
take place in Russia and Ukraine, and
St. Petersburg based organizers Vladimir
Kravchenko and Sergey Babitch are
obviously aware that they are operating
in territories facing ‘difficult’ political
situations. However they are determined
to use their events to promote non political
and progressive co operations to encourage
the development of the music business in
and beyond the troubled regions.
A meeting of friends, partners and
Convention participants took place in St.
Petersburg in May of this year to discuss
the results and achievements of previous
events held in four countries and plans for
the future. According to the statistics of the
conferences held in Saint Petersburg, Minsk,
Kiev and Almaty, about two thousand
music industry specialists from 12 countries
attended.
Topics on the agenda included:
Showcases - Why Artists need them?;
Colisium 3plet Select” – a new means
of communication between artists and
promoters; Opportunities for students
to volunteer at summer festivals, and
educational seminars.
A planned partnership with Ilya Bortnuk’s
promotion and booking company Light
Music was also announced. Ilya is one of the
best known Russian professionals at many
of the major conference and showcase
events, such as ILMC, Eurosonic etc. Vladimir
Kravchenko commented, “We have known
each other for a long time and Ilya has a
lot of experience in organizing festivals
and undeniable professional taste. We are
consulting him about many things. We
often attend the same music conferences
and showcases in different cities around
the world. There is no better person in our
country to estimate the potential of a new
artist in showcase events than Ilya. He is a
professional with enthusiasm and is inspired
to do it. Not every promoter does it the
same way, which is why you can always
trust his expert opinion. And of course we
will always try to help each other to find and
promote new artists and names.”
Registration is open for two upcoming
events:
Colisium: 11 - 14 September 2014:
Moscow, Sokolniki Exibition Center,
NAMM MusikMesse Russia. (VIP will
attend this event.)
Colisium: 6 - 8 November 2014:

Krasnojarsk, Siberia.
Plans are also in place aimed at
arranging Colisium events in Latvia,

VIPNEWS > AUGUST 2014
Media reports at the beginning of July caused speculation
about Creative Talent’s financial situation following the official
announcement that the Greenville Festival near Berlin and the
German dates of the Backstreet Boys and Snoop Dog had been
postponed due to weak ticket sales.
Journalists at trade papers received a copy of a letter apparently
issued by Creative Talent, asking creditors not to claim debts before
August 31, explaining that the Company was in the process of
restructuring.
No further statements or information have appeared on the
Company website since then have. Creative Talent’s latest Facebook
postings were made at the end of July. Amongst others upcoming
Kylie Minogue and Lauryn Hill shows are still advertised, but on
the website of Ticketmaster, once the premier ticketing partner of
Creative Talent, sales for these shows have been suspended.
However, tickets for Kylie Minogue shows are still available on
the CTS Eventim and Kölnticket websites. There are also no
announcements on the venue or the artist websites that the German
shows are cancelled. A previous interview request by e-mail remains
unanswered until now.
Creative Talent - No News Following CancellationsManfred Tari [email protected]
In Defence of UK VenuesManfred Tari [email protected]
Following the closure and threat of closure of several important UK venues on the vital artist development club circuit, reported in recent issues of VIP News, the Music Venue Trust was set up to offer support to present and future victims of the threat of closures brought about by new resident objections. This is the Trust’s open letter to the UK governmental authorities:
AN OPEN LETTER TO LIZ TRUSS (DEFRA), SAJID JAVID (DCMS)
and ERIC PICKLES (DCLG)
Many thanks for the DEFRA response to the Music Venue Trust
petition calling for a Review of Noise Abatement Legislation (see:
http://qr.net/sign).
Your reply is interesting, but it does not provide an adequate answer
to the problems and challenges we have raised on behalf of live
music venues and other community spaces in the UK. At the same
time, it has helped to clarify the issues, and move our campaign on
to address three specific things you need to do to protect live music
in the UK:
1. Cut Red Tape. Your reply highlights that the laws around noise
nuisance are complex, overlapping, and arise from multiple laws,
legilsation and precedents dating back as far as the 1800s. You say
you are opposed to red tape, so we invite you to cut it. Because
it’s quite clear that nobody involved understands it and law that
is open to significant interpretation to meet one aim or another is
not good law. People are writing to us saying all noise, however
loud, is permitted until 11pm. Others say no noise is permissible at
any time. Work across your departments to create one, clear,
unequivocal and easily understood document that relates
to noise emanating from live performances, sports, and
community activity.
2. Establish national criteria, guidelines and advice for
Environmental Health Officers. A lot of the DEFRA response
depends upon local interpretation of unclear national legislation,
placing an unfair and unreasonable demand on local EHOs. We
believe in local negotiations, and are delighted with the outcome
of the recent challenges faced by The Fleece in Bristol, but your
Kylie Minogue
21
VIPNEWS > AUGUST 2014
response creates “Schrödinger Venues” - great music venues who
might or might not be making a noise, we won’t find out until
someone decides they don’t like it. We need to stop considering the
philosophical question “does a small venue make a noise if there is
no-one around to hear it?” and answer the question “what is the
appropriate level of noise in this zone?”. The decision in Bristol is
fantastic and shows how some venues can work with their local
councils and EHOs to get good development, but it’s not a legal
precedent and we shouldn’t be leaving these things to chance. You
say you want to see well-managed, well-run, thriving live music
spaces. How can any business make provision for, or try to act within,
a completely unknown quantity? Is 35dB at 20 metres too much or
isn’t it? What about 40dB, or 60dB? And what about 2 metres, or
200 metres? Your response specifically conflates music with noise
and noise with nuisance. We say live music and noise coming from
other community activities is not a nuisance, it is the heart and
soul of local communities. Create a proper national framework
for noise emanating from live performances, sports, and
community activity that can be referenced by Enivironmental
Health Officers and establish a good practice guide.
3. Adopt the Agent of Change Principle. The DEFRA response
states, and it has been stated extensively elsewhere, that it is a long
established principle of UK law that it does not matter if someone
moves next to a noise, the noise maker still has the responsibility to
adapt the noise to suit whatever new conditions the new occupier
feels they want. We, and thousands of other people, say this is
fundamentally against common sense. If I move to a fishing village,
can I stop the fishing because I don’t like the smell? If I move next
to a football ground, can I stop the games because I don’t like
cheering or crowds? The DEFRA response references precedents
in UK law dating back 200 years. We’ve come quite a long way in
the last 200 years, and there’s a few more of us living right next
to each other. There is a principle you can adopt called Agent of
Change; this states that responsibility to adapt the conditions of
the noise falls on the person who changes the existing conditions.
It’s already been adopted in various guises in Australia, affecting
planning, development and noise complaints positively across
the board. The principle is simple: If a venue increases its noise,
it should make changes to adapt it. If a developer wants to build
next to a music venue, they must build to adapt to the noise. If a
new occupier moves into a zone where there is an accepted level
of noise, they should make changes to adapt it. If DEFRA don’t
adopt the Agent of Change principle, every venue, every sports
ground, every cinema, restaurant, theatre, race track, church, and
community space in the country faces bills running into thousands
of pounds trying to fight developments or meet an ever evolving
demand from new occupiers to modify and adapt their noise.
Venues will close without an Agent of Change principle. Adopt
the Agent of Change principle.
Secretaries of State, you can act now to save live music venues in
the UK.
• Good noise management requires good legislation.
Cut Red Tape.
• Good local councils and EHOs need national support
to make good and balanced decisions. Establish national
criteria, guidelines and advice about noise.
• Good town centre development means good facilities and
good residential space for all, not a continual battle
between local music communities and developers who
want to make a fast buck. Adopt the Agent of Change
Principle.
We intend to continue to fight for the right of local communities to
be able to enjoy great live music venues. We urge you to take action
to do the same. We call upon music fans across the UK to unite
behind our existing petition - please sign now and force MPs to
debate this issue:
http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/65582

Mark Davyd, Sybil Bell, Chris Prosser, Jeremy Mills, Beverley Whitrick,

CTS Eventim - Q2-Results To Be Released August 27:
The business results for the second quarter of CTS Eventim had not
been released by the time this report went to press, nevertheless vari-
ous analysts have already made their recommendations.
An analyst of Bankhaus Lampe expects lower ticket sales and less
headliner tours in Q2 due to the Football World Cup. Nevertheless the
recommendation still remains at ‘Buy’. Warburg Research comes to a
similar conclusion and recommends “hold” for the share, projecting
a target price of 20.50 Euro per share. The Berenberg Bank in mid
August maintained its recommendation at ‘Buy’ and projects a target
price of 26 Euro. On August 11, Exane BNP Paribas reported a target
of 27.50 Euro, also in expectation of a lower growth but considering
the share to be worth the rating of ‘Outperformer’.
In the last issue the reported share price was 23.18 Euro, on August
25 it is at 20.93 Euro.
DEAG - US Investor Increases Stake:
The Kabouter Management, LLC, Chicago, Illinois is an investment
fund specialized in non-US smaller and midsized stocks. The company
is acting on behalf of “family offices” and is co-managed by Peter Zal-
divar. Since August 18 Kabouter Management and Zaldivar increased
their stake in DEAG shares to 5.98 percent each of the outstanding
share capital.
On June 23 the share stood at 6.24 Euro, now it is at 5.85 Euro.
Live Nation Q2 - Results Reported:
At the end of July Live Nation reported its business results for the first
half year of 2014. The revenue went up seven percent to $2.79 billion
(one year ago $2.6 billion). In the first six months of the ongoing busi-
ness year the revenue in the Concerts division moved up from $1.7 to
$1.83 billion, Ticketing from $663 to $725 million, Artist Nation from
$150 to $151.7 million while the Sponsorship revenue gained a plus
of four percent from $111 up to $116 million. The net income loss
raised from $5,1 to $9.5 million, which is a loss per share of $ 0.06.
The share meanwhile dropped from $23.57 to $21.72.
SFX Entertainment Q2-Results Also Reported...
These figures are impressive: Compared to Q2/2013 the revenue went
up from $27.4 to $81.9 million. In the first half year SFX Entertain-
ment increased its revenue result from $37.5 to $115 million. The net
loss went up from $43.9 to $107.2 million.
In a press release Robert F.X. Sillerman, Chairman and CEO of the
company stated: “The second quarter marked a turning point in our
progress toward driving growth from the scale and synergies we’re
achieving from our integrated platform of live events, online interac-
tions and a growing number of unique marketing and sponsorship
partnerships”.
The list of sponsors includes Anheuser-Busch InBev, Clear Channel
Media and Entertainment, Syco Entertainment, T-Mobile US, Master-
Card and, yes, the one and only Viagogo. When Viagogo is on board
there is hope of maximum earnings in sight...
Anyhow, Sillerman furthermore commented on the company future:
“With the additional proof of concept of our ability to expand our
existing powerful festival brands, with, for instance, Tomorrowland
coming to Brazil and Rock in Rio coming to Las Vegas in 2015, we
are now well-positioned to grow all aspects of our business. The EMC
Revolution is just beginning.”
Previously the share was at $8.35, now it is on $6.99.
