The ultimate purpose of school discipline is the development of self-discipline. In all of the South Brunswick Schools, we strive to be consistent, firm but fair, and aware of the pride and dignity of every student. While in school, we expect students to behave responsibly, to respect the rights and properties of others, and to work cooperatively with all members of the school community. We expect students to follow the school guidelines and the guidelines established in each class. Students are responsible to all school personnel for their behavior while on their way to and from school, during the before and after school programs, during the school day and at all school-sponsored activities.

CODE OF CONDUCT GUIDELINES
All South Brunswick Schools embrace the following core values, CARES, in an effort to build positive school citizens in our learning community.
C Cooperation A Assertion R Responsibility E Empathy S Self-control As students move to the high school, they continue to build upon this basic core
while emphasizing the values of Honesty, Respect, Kindness, Service, and Responsibility into which CARES are embedded. Our intent is to build a safe and caring community with intention. This is supported by the District proactive approach to Character Education which fosters social, emotional and academic growth. When a student commits an offense, the school staff helps the student to see the relationship between the offense and the related core value. When logical consequences are applied, age-level parameters are used, and a student developmental needs, history of unacceptable behavior, and the circumstances of the offense are taken into consideration.

Human Dignity-Anti-Discrimination
Students who witness or believe they are victims of discrimination should report incidents to an adult in authority.
"Bigotry, insult, defamation, and harassment do not represent the values of this district, or the values that this district seeks to instill in its students. Teachers should be free to teach, staff members free to work, and students free to learn in an environment that is free from discrimination, and that encourages respect for others so that the benefits of this district's educational opportunities can be shared by all without regard to race, religion, national origin, gender, handicap, age, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status (South Brunswick's Human Dignity Policy).”
Specific steps are outlined in the procedures and shared with individuals as needed or requested. Violations of this policy will result in appropriate responses, which may include disciplinary consequences, and possible police involvement.
