The Basketball Camp in York, introduced in 2009, has become a VC‘Highlight Camp’ directed by American professional star, David‘Doc’ Rivers, an ex-NBA player and all-star guard with the LALakers. David became one of the best ever players in Europe,leading several top teams from different countries tochampionships. Together with the support of a great coachingteam, young aspiring players make rapid progress while having a

great time, making this one of the best ever camps (page 12).

Summer 2009 saw the Village Camps Riding and GolfCamps move to York, with great success. Riders

enjoyed the top class instruction and facilities ofthe equestrian centres close to camp. The golfersprogressed confidently at the excellent Forest ofGaltres 18-hole course (pages 12-13).

Over the past few years, the Village Campslanguage programmes at all camps have seenfresh and innovative improvements with a newsyllabus designed by a language expert. Thishighly successful new approach concentrates onusing the spoken word and techniques based onparticipation, role-playing, projects and having fun

whilst learning. Students make unprecedentedprogress.

AustriaThis totally different camp combines a Mountain and LakeAdventure Camp with English and German Languageprogrammes and an extraordinary Film-Making experience,where Film Campers engage the entire camp as their actorsand extras!

Located close to the famous lake of Zell am See, about 90minutes from Salzburg, the Village Camps chalet has itsown gymnasium, tennis courts, outdoor challenge courseand giant chessboard. Within a five minute walk is amagnificent sports centre with its own pool as well asfootball pitches, trampolines, more tennis courts and askateboard park. FranceVillage Camps France retains its exciting canoe, kayak andcave adventures along with a full day of fun at one ofEurope’s most exciting Water Parks. The River Experiencehighlight is the thrilling 2-day, 30 km descent of theArdèche River, with an overnight stay in bivouacs ‘under-the-stars’.

The camp’s fascinating, action-packed programme includeschallenging games as well as an in-depth introduction toprehistoric man in an area noted for its ancient caves withwall paintings, some dating back 35,000 years! NEW! VILLAGE CAMPS ACQUIRES ITS OWN‘ALPINE LEARNING CENTRE’ IN LEYSINVillage Camps is delighted to have acquired the former GlionHotel School building as its main base in Leysin, which isbeing upgraded and developed into the ‘Village Camps AlpineLearning Centre’. The Centre has a magnificent view across theRhône Valley to the Dents du Midi and Mont Blanc in thedistance. All rooms are either fully en-suite or have a privateshower and accommodate 3-4 campers. The Centre has itsown classrooms, dining rooms, games rooms, music and dancestudio, relaxing common rooms, arts and craft room and alarge, well-equipped theatre.

Easy access to the exceptional amenities of Leysin Situated in the majestic Swiss Alps, 90 minutes from Geneva, thevillage of Leysin is the outstanding base of the long establishedrange of Swiss Village Camps programmes and theinternationally acclaimed Leadership Training Camp (LTC).

The Alpine Learning Centre, where most of the programmes takeplace, as well as the Central Residence Hotel which comfortablyhosts the LTC group, are both within easy walking distance, or a3-minute shuttle ride to the centre of the village. Leysin, with its

excellent sports facilities, cozycafés, small shops and thefabulous mountainsideprovides the perfect setting fora summer camp. Sportsfacilities are listed on the sidetable while in the surroundingmountains are hiking trails,adventure trails, a rock-climbing area, cycling paths,campfire area and awelcoming mountain hut forovernights.

These camps combine apractical language experiencewith the Tennis Camp. Playersreceive three hours oflanguage tutoring (in Englishor French) in the mornings andthen three hours of tennisinstruction (in English orFrench) during the afternoons.

Ages 10-17

School happens all year but at Village Camps, learning in thesummer, although a serious business, is based on a unique funapproach. That is what a good camp is all about – learning whilstenjoying the experience!

Each language camp offers 15 hours of language immersion perweek in small groups of 8-12 students, which allows time forindividual, personal attention. All Village Camps teachers arenative speakers who are qualified professionals with extendedteaching experience. On arrival, each camper is assessed andthen placed into a group of similar level.

The programme is suitable for all levels and the emphasis is onencouraging the campers to speak and understand the language

Tennis CampIn collaboration with therenowned California TennisAcademy, head coach SteveLoft provides first class lessonsand an exceptionalimprovement programme fortennis players, based on 15 hours instruction per week.With both covered courts andoutdoor clay courts, theprogramme caters for allability levels starting withcomplete beginners. Everyoneparticipates in the ‘In-Camp’tournament while higherranked players can play localmatches and join regionaltournaments. This year, Village Camps continues its successful newprogramme, which offers the freedom of choice to each activitycamper by providing three different Morning Clubs. So, on eachweekday morning, campers can choose the Club that intereststhem most from Adventure, Sports, and Dance.

Adventure Club A chance to participate in a range of activities that are rarelyavailable together in one setting!

There are many highlights on this challenging outdoor activityprogramme - biking along gorgeous mountain paths, white waterrafting, ropes course, rock-climbing, nature skills and a trek highinto the mountains above Leysin for an overnight stay in awelcoming mountain hut. Ages 10-17

Dance ClubA programme designed for campers who want to create,rehearse and ultimately perform during the evening get-togethers and shows at camp. The head instructor, known as‘Dancing Lisa’, is very experienced and highly-popular amongcampers. She provides a top quality programme covering manydifferent styles of dance and performance. The campers spendmornings developing their routines, choosing music, working onchoreography, designing and making costumes and, of course,rehearsing. Ages 10-17

Sports ClubThis is for campers who love sports! With so many top-classsports facilities, indoor and open air, in Leysin, there is a greatchoice available. Time is spent developing skills in popular sportslike football, basketball, volleyball and swimming as well as othersports and games which are often new to many campers. Junior Camp This is the perfect introduction to summer camp! The JuniorCamp provides a very special first-time-away experience foryoungsters who need that extra degree of sympathetic care.Juniors always feel comfortable and confident at camp,enjoying the exceptional care and attention of a dedicated,experienced team of counsellors (ratio is 1 to 5). Their dailyschedule includes a carefully-planned selection of specially-adapted activities, which include football, trekking, arts &crafts, music, dance, ice skating and many more. Meals aretaken together with other campers, so that they can reassureany elder brothers and sisters that they are having a greattime!

Juniors participate in several suitable ‘All-Camp’ activities, thedaily lunch meeting and excursions. So, they have the best ofboth worlds - very much a part of the overall camp but alsoable to enjoy their precious privacy in their own wing of thebuilding. Telephones and parent contact are readily accessibleand with caring personal supervision throughout, it adds up toa guaranteed super-duper first experience away from home!

This camp is a Village Camps original and has become a mostpopular, award-winning camp for older teenagers. LeadershipTraining Camp provides participants with the opportunity tobuild leadership skills, learn problem-solving techniques, developcommunication skills and work more effectively in teams. Theprogramme combines inspiring presentations on a variety oftopics using unique resources, team challenges, competitionsand exciting outdoor activities. Campers are challenged to setgoals and objectives for themselves and work hard towardsachieving them. They leave LTC with increased self-confidenceand a positive mindset, well on their way to becoming effectiveleaders!

The LTC is an independent programme housed separately, at thecomfortable Central Residence Hotel two minutes from the maincampus. Ages 16-18

Football Camp An outstanding football experience with exceptionalcoaching!Village Camps was a pioneer in the organisation of high calibrefootball camps in the early 70s and still leads the field today.Football Director, Neil O’Donnell, one of the best qualifiedcoaches working with young footballers, has devised, and is thereto personally lead, an exciting, modern coaching schedule that isthoroughly enjoyed by the campers from all over the world.

Our qualified coaching team leads training sessions everyweekday morning, using the first class facilities and excellentpitches of the campus. In the afternoons, there is an additionalopportunity for keen players to join a further session. Players aredivided into age and ability groups and the dedicated coachingteam works hard and enthusiastically to develop individual skillsand techniques as well as teaching formations, tactics and teammoves. Sessions cover free kicks, corners, penalty-taking,goalkeeper coaching, heading the ball and other important skills.At the end of each period there is a short competitive game foreach age group, usually on a 5-a-side pitch, with time taken outto analyse tactics and pick up any points that need individualattention. The course will suit beginners and young players

looking to make a start or improve their game, right up to giftedplayers dreaming of a professional career. Everyone has fun onthis busy, competitive camp, guaranteed to give players a betterinsight into the game and improve their playing skills.

One of the highlights is the personal appearance of a former‘star’ professional player, who is photographed with eachcamper, presents a short video of career highlights and thengives a question and answer session with campers about life as aprofessional footballer. Other highlights are a ‘tricks’ session by aspecialist professional who devises these moves for present-daystars, the end-of-camp Counsellors vs Campers face-off, themuch-anticipated excursion to Old Trafford, home of ManchesterUnited, the awards night with prizes and the presentation of theattractively designed Village Camps football kit for every player.

After the football training, everyone enjoys a range of excitingactivities and cultural visits, speaking English with new friendsduring an unbeatable, action-packed fun-filled summer holiday!

England Language CampWhere learning and practice are absolute funVillage Camps, along with leading English language teachingspecialists, has developed a winning teaching format based onusing the spoken word, comprehension, small-group projects androle-playing. Campers make unprecedented progress becausethey actually enjoy their lessons!

The Language Camp includes 15 hours of targeted instructioneach week. Following a brief placement test on arrival, campersare in level-appropriate groups of 8-10 which allow time forindividual, personal attention. Students learn and improve bypracticing speaking together, using a range of specially chosen,interesting subjects that become brief but fascinating ‘projects’.

The work is serious but the instruction is light and informal,always aimed at retaining campers’ interest with many sessionsconducted outside classrooms. There are opportunities to speakEnglish on the excursion programme, with campers encouragedto become more comfortable and confident expressingthemselves using their newly acquired English language skills.Each instructor discusses progress individually with students anduses a continuous assessment programme to monitorperformance. At the end of camp, a detailed progress report issent to each family. Ages 10-17

Performing Arts CampA brilliantly conceived and uniqueprogramme integrating dance, theatre andmusic progressing throughout the session toan impressive last-night performance. This unique Village Camps programme, foraspiring performers with ‘stars in their eyes’, isheaded up by Jono Freeman, a talented andcharismatic musician, drama and theatrespecialist, working closely with an outstandingteam that includes a dance specialist, voice andsinging coach and production manager.

During the first few days, ideas are discussedand the campers, working with the teachingteam, agree a theme, setting the scene for theend-of-session theatre performance. Thecoaching team work with the enthusiasticactors, actresses, singers and dancers to improvetheir individual skills, whilst building theseefforts into what are always superb end-of-session shows in a well equipped local theatreattended by the entire camp and visitingparents. Leadership Training Camp (LT C)With the challenging York countryside serving as field of action,teams of campers are presented with a full range of tasks in whichteamwork, communication and problem-solving are put to thetest. Each day is constructed around workshops at base camp aswell as physical exercise, outdoor activities and ‘thinking’challenges. These conclude with field excursions designed as rally-type contests with campers given places to find, sites to visit, itemsto collect and missions to accomplish. The Leadership TrainingCamp is an innovative, award-winning programme ideal for olderteenagers who want to gain confidence and develop their ‘life-skills’ in preparation for university studies and adult life in general.

The 3-hour interactive workshops combine inspiringpresentations on a variety of topics using sophisticated resources.In the training sessions and team projects, traditionally renownedspeakers attend from all over the world giving outstandingpresentations. In the past guest speakers have attended from asfar afield as the US, Malta and South Africa.

T.A.L.E. – The Amazing Leadership Experience

Creative Arts CampThe Creative Arts programme has proved to be a major successand will be run for the third summer by one of the mostexperienced Village Camps Coordinators, Chris-Tina Fogle, anexpert art-educator and fine artist in her own right. The programme is suitable for youngsters at all ability levelsfrom the enthusiastic or curious beginner through to the mosttalented artist. Campers are encouraged to explore, create andexpress themselves in a wide range of art forms includingpainting, sketching, drawing, sculpting and covers importantaspects of the history of art, all under the personal guidance ofChris-Tina and her qualified staff team. Riding CampAn exceptional riding programme with top instruction andgreat facilities at leading equestrian centresVillage Camps riding centres are about 30 minutes from campand are amongst the top riding establishments in Yorkshire.Instruction is in the hands of experienced teams who areenthusiastic and patient with the beginners while, at the otherextreme, top international dressage instructors are there tochallenge the competition riders and those at the level of 3-dayeventing.

There are first class facilities with indoor and outdoor arenas,paddocks, a well-constructed cross country track as well as aclubhouse for lunchtime and other short breaks. There are quietlanes where the improving beginners and competent riders canhack with confidence and open country where the experiencedcan gallop while enjoying the gorgeous scenery. The aim is forbeginners and inexperienced riders to gain confidence, learningto walk, trot, canter, jump small logs and eventually small fences.An important part of the course is to learn good practice withthe care of the horses, tacking up, washing down after work andbandaging as well as some of the chores of stable husbandry.

Lessons run through the morning with a short afternoon sessionafter lunch, making four and a half hours at the stables each daywith just over half the time usually spent riding. When the ridersreturn to camp, they join the exciting afternoon and eveningactivity programme, enjoying the friendship of campers from allover the world. Ages 10-17

Golf CampThe Forest of Galtres 18-hole parkland course, some 30 minutesdrive from the main camp, was a highly successful new venue forthe 2009 Golf Camp. This much-acclaimed, intensive programmeis for committed golfers of all abilities, serious enough to spend5 hours each day learning to play the game or improve theirhandicap. Lessons take place every weekday morning and during90 minutes of the afternoon and are in the hands of the well-known PGA qualified instructor and club professional, AlastairGrindlay who has 15 years teaching experience in England,Germany and Spain. Alastair and his professional assistants usemodern teaching methods with computerised video analysis,physical screening, in-depth putting analysis and ‘Mind Factor’teaching. There is a practice green, a sand-trap ‘chipping area’, apractice putting green and a magnificent, 6-bay covered drivingrange. At lunchtime golfers enjoy a relaxing break and arewelcomed into the friendly clubhouse and its adjacent Pro Shop.

The course itself is professionally designed and set in 120 acresin the glorious parkland and wooded scenery in the ancientForest of Galtres. It is almost 6,000 meters long, 71 par with thegreens built to the demanding specifications of the US GolfAssociation.

The group is divided into ability groups for the lessons, which arealways serious but also great fun with friendly putting andchipping competitions, as well as frequent opportunities to play9 or 18 holes. There is a great deal of personal attention andevery golfer can expect to make significant progress over thetwo-week session. Film AcademyCampers are inspired to learn what it takes to make a film from script writing to shooting, editing,directing, and organising sound and light. Film Academy director Edward McDougal is a renownedproducer and director of a number of award-winning films as well as a university professor whotravels worldwide to deliver expert seminars in screenwriting and production. Campers are taughtthe technical side of filming, production, editing and special effects. Their involvement is total, firstdeveloping a script and then modifying a story board, selecting locations, shooting, editing anddubbing. The cast of the final film consists of the entire camp community and each participant inthis programme receives a DVD of their very own short movie after returning home!

Traditionally, mornings, and occasionally afternoons and evenings, are devoted to the film project.Using the group’s creativity skills, an existing script will be modified, locations investigated andcampers interviewed to determine individual roles. This is an inspiring camp which encouragesenthusiasm, energy, dedication and real creativity. During the afternoons there is a choice of otheractivities, always provided that campers are able to finally tear themselves away from their camerasand computers! English Language Camp The goal is to ensure that campers learn English in an engagingand fun way with emphasis on getting youngsters to speak andunderstand the language better. Thirty hours of instruction in thetwo weeks are constantly reinforced in the ‘outside theclassroom hours’ as the main camp language is English. Campersare encouraged to improve their spoken English but at the sametime to have a fun time in a warm and friendly environment.This is a very successful and popular way of teaching campers toenjoy the learning process and the results have beenunprecedented. German Language CampThe emphasis is on fun while learning German the Village Campsway. With mornings devoted to language instruction, the guidingprinciple is to gain proficiency in speaking and comprehension.The course philosophy is based on learning a new language byenjoying the experience. In all, there are thirty hours of practicalinstruction in small groups of 8-12 students.

Language campers are encouraged to use their Germanthroughout the day, whichever activity they join. Fun ‘penalties’are given to campers ‘caught’ speaking any language other thanGerman, making this camp a great way to learn a language.

Campers also practice their Chinese calligraphy skills on thebasic characters that they have learned in class or seen aroundBeijing and other places during their excursions.

Chinese Peers at CampTogether with international campers who travel to Beijing, thecamp also hosts a group of Chinese teenagers of the same agerange (13-17). The international campers and the Chinesecampers are completely integrated into camp life but theChinese group modify the schedule so that they cover Englishlessons and ‘Western’ Culture’ workshops. the world-famous Tiananmen Square, where campers visitTiananmen Tower, Monument to the People’s Heroes, GreatHall of the People, Mao Zedong Memorial Hall and watch thenational flag raising ceremony. Every year, millions of peoplecome to admire this impressive, grandiose Square, the placewhere many significant historical events happened. Anabsolute ‘must-see’ for every Beijing visitor!

� Forbidden City – Situated exactly in the heart of themunicipality, the Forbidden City was home to 24 emperors ofthe Ming and Qing Dynasties. In ancient times, the emperorssuccessively claimed to be the son of God and thereforesupreme power was conferred upon them from the heaven.Their residence on the earth was built as a replica of the PurplePalace where God lived in Heaven. Entry to such a divine placewas certainly forbidden to the ordinary people which is whythe city is so named.

� The Old Beijing Tour – A fascinating tour of the old city ofBeijing with the bell tower, antique stores, market places. Thereis a boat ride on the trendy Houhai Lake and a rickshaw ride inthe ‘hutongs’, a Mongolian word for the narrow streets.

� The Summer Palace – Located on the western edge of Beijing,the Summer Palace was used as a summer residence byChina’s imperial rulers – as a retreat from the main imperialpalace now known as the ‘Forbidden City’ – a pleasure groundin the countryside, yet near to the city. The Summer Palace is avirtual museum of traditional Chinese gardening that usesrocks, plants, pavilions, ponds, cobble paths and other gardenstyles to create a poetic effect between different scenes. Whenyou stroll around the Summer Palace, you constantly find thearea changing. Truly impressive!

� The Great Wall Mu Tian Yu – The Great Wall of China: one ofthe few sites visible from space, it spans over 3,000 miles. TheGreat Wall is a must see while visiting any part of China. Thismassive structure may have once served as a barrier but it nowserves as a location where all cultures can meet and mingle.

� Trip to Shaanxi Province – Campers with their counsellors takean overnight train to Xi’an where they visit the Shaanxi HistoryMuseum, Great Goose Pagoda, the Great Mosque and MuslimMarket. The next day is a visit to the famed Terra CottaWarriors before flying back to Beijing.

a Canada OntarioCamp KandaloreThe majority of campers are anglophone Canadians, so thiscamp is ideal for those seeking to improve their English in a truecamp environment.

Nestled on the secluded shores of Lake Kabakawa, 210 kmnortheast of Toronto, this well-equipped camp has operatedsince 1947 and hosted dozens of our campers over many years.

AccommodationCampers stay in simple 4-8 bed cabins with toilet and showerfacilities within a short walk. The impressive site includes aspacious dining room, a large recreation hall with stage,classroom facilities, an arts and crafts centre and extensivewaterfront facilities.

Camp organisationEvery day there is an excellent choice of water sports andcreative activities. Every camper at Kandalore will take part in acanoe trip – the younger campers will spend the night on thecamp private island, while older campers will enjoy up to threedays and two nights spent along one of the many beautiful riversin the area. There is a full programme of evening activities

Lakefield CampLakefield Camp International isoperated on the grounds ofLakefield College School, one of Canada’s most prestigiousprivate boarding schools, founded in 1879. Located only 150 kmfrom Toronto, Lakefield Camp features a calm lake, extensiveopen countryside and comfortable accommodation in a clean,safe and natural environment.

AccommodationCampers are accommodated in the College’s modern ‘house’style residences. These houses are equipped with complete toiletand shower facilities. Every effort is made to integrate thedifferent nationalities by mixing the various language groups.Supervision is in the capable hands of the camp staff who sharethe residences with the campers in their care.

Camp organisationThe daily programme is structured around five 1-hour activityperiods. Two consecutive periods are spent in the classroom forlanguage study. On arrival, all campers will be assessed so thatthey are placed in the class appropriate to their language ability.

In the remaining three periods, campers choose their activitiesfor the week from the sports and arts facilities available atLakefield. This ensures that they have the time to make realprogress. All the instruction at camp is in English and by qualifiedstaff. Ages 9-16

Camp Swallowdale Situated on the shores of Fairy Lake, in the picturesque highlandsof Muskoka, Swallowdale Camp is available to campers aged 7-16 years seeking a traditional camp experience. Campers fromall over the world join Canadian children to share this activecamp programme.

AccommodationCampers stay in rustic 6-10 bed cabins with toilet and washingfacilities with showers in a nearby central location. Supervision iswell organised with the counsellors sharing the cabin facilitieswith the campers in their charge.

Camp organisationThe programme is designed around five 1-hour instructionalperiods each day, two of these allocated to ESL (English as aSecond Language) where the concentration from the outset isachieving an improvement in the campers’ ability tocommunicate in English. Campers are assessed on arrival andplaced in a class suitable for their respective abilities. As much ofthe activity programme focuses on the waterfront, swimminglessons are available and certified lifeguards are on duty duringall water-based activities.

The remainder of the day is for taking part in the other waterand land based camp activities with instruction in the hands ofqualified counsellors ensuring the development of the requiredskills. Ages 7-16

St Michael ’s College CampusLocated on the historical and picturesque University of Torontodowntown campus, the St. Michael’s Campus programme enjoysa great location within walking distance of many of Toronto’smain attractions. Available to students aged 14-18 years, theprogramme combines the formality of classroom instructionwith an exciting choice of leisure activities.

St. Michael’s operates in July and August and offers a variety ofarrival dates for the convenience of individuals.

AccommodationStudents are accommodated in the St. Michael’s residence insingle or twin bedrooms with toilets and showers on each floor.Laundry facilities are available in-house. The extensive universitycampus has exceptional facilities including common rooms, alanguage laboratory, a library and an internet cafe close by. Allstudents have membership of a local sports complex. There isexcellent security on site.

Camp OrganisationThe daily programme is scheduled into three distinctive parts.Five mornings per week, formal language instruction focuses onthe development of speaking and listening skills, as well asreading and writing. Students receive 20 hours of ESL instructionper week, taught by qualified language specialists. Eachafternoon, the activity programme provides students with a widevariety of choices. Students can immerse themselves in Canadianculture by making use of campus facilities, sightseeing orspending time in the community. The evening programme isboth on and off campus. Ages 14-18
