In her column last month the Revd Susan Allman explained the terminology involved in her appointment as Vicar. This month (Being a Vicar page 2/3) she explains what this means in practical terms particularly as it affects those members of the parish and church community who have taken on responsibilities to ease the load of a half-time parish priest.

Councillor Geoff Hockley is another member of our community who is adept at getting things done and in his article (page 8) he explains how a gazebo came to be erected beside the Titchfield Canal for the benefit of walkers (and their dogs). The countryside features as well in Robert Blake’s piece on ancient woodlands in which he notes that the nearby Forest of Bere was a prime source of oak for the Navy and for the tanning industry.

Back in the village we have a feature of the work and ambitions of the Titchfield Village Trust (page 12/13) in which Ann Wheal outlines ideas and proposals which are being discussed with the aim of preserving the village as an ideal place in which to live and work. Titchfield History Society launch their 2015/16 programme this month (page 14) and in Family Matters at St Peter’s (page 11) Helen Perry and Edwina Day write of the work they have put in progress to create opportunities for children to participate in the life and worship of the church. Dear Friends,

Last month I explained some of the terminology. Now we come down to the really important matter of what it means to be vicar instead of priest-in-charge. The first thing to say is that in practical, day to day terms there is no difference.

I was and am your parish priest; the spiritual leader of St. Peter’s Titchfield. My role is to plan and lead worship, to oversee the teaching and preaching that takes place in and through the church and the pastoral care which we offer to the people of the parish. Above all, I am to be a person of prayer and to administer the sacraments. In his book the Christian Priest Today (1972), Michael Ramsey ,the former Archbishop of Canterbury, described the priestly task as, “Being with God with the people on your heart.” I think this is a very good summary.

There are a lot of practical and legal responsibilities too but these are shared with churchwardens, the parochial church council and all those willing volunteers who give generously of their time and skills to ensure the smooth running of a busy church like St. Peter’s, administer its finances and care for its building which in our case is both ancient and historically significant. The sharing of these practical tasks helps me, as your parish priest, to maintain my primary focus on prayer, worship, teaching and pastoral care.

There are no financial subsidies for the church, although we may occasionally be

able to obtain grants for particular projects. Here, as in every parish, a debt of gratitude is owed to the small and committed group of people who regularly, generously and sacrificially fund and maintain the church so that it is available for the wider community to use and enjoy.

As in every area of life, the church faces resourcing issues. Titchfield is quite a small parish, particularly now that the north of the parish is administered separately as the Conventional District of Whiteley which will probably become a separate parish.

When Revd. Bill Day retired in 2009 the parish was initially offered a House for Duty priest; an unpaid priest who would be given free accommodation in the vicarage, in return for taking Sunday services and working in the parish for a further two days. After some discussion if was agreed that this was too drastic a step so I was appointed, initially for a five year interim period, to help the parish prepare for the appointment of a half-time stipendiary priest after that.

The original, five year period expires in November. You already know I now have leave to stay indefinitely but we are already well on the way towards achieving the goal of a half-time priest within five years. I was appointed as Area Dean for Fareham two years ago. This is technically a half-time post, so the time I am now able to give to parish duties has been greatly reduced.

Being a Vicar

(From page 2) My absence is offset by the fact that some of the tasks previously undertaken by the vicar are now being done by lay people.

Three years ago we appointed a part-time book-keeper, Wendy Donnelly, who has proved herself to be an invaluable asset. We also set up a Local Ministry Team of six lay people to share in my day to day role as much as possible. Its current members are Stella Warne, Kay Dunleavy, Trevor Streten, Penny Murrells, Roger Bryant and Iain Windebank.

Others have responded to our changing situation with energy and enthusiasm. Our dedicated fabric team, for instance, chaired by Paul Angelides who orchestrated our successful bid for Heritage Lottery Funding for essential church roof repairs is working hard to oversee this major project.

We continue to be thankful for the support of the Friends of St. Peter’s, for Liz Miller our honorary parish co-ordinator, for the Pastoral Support Group, who visit and befriend those known to us who are bereaved, ill or in need of company, for those who work with our young families and for all those who contribute their time, money and resources to the work and mission of our local parish church.

It is no longer possible for anyone to be a “lone ranger” vicar, or to be a church which expects the vicar to do it all. St. Paul refers to the church as the Body of Christ. If one part is not functioning properly we all know about it. Everyone is important in God’s economy. The changing times in which we live may just be calling us back to the active discipleship that always was and always will be expected of every follower of Christ, who laid down his life for us all.

With love in Him,

Susan

Home Groups

At St Peter’s we have a network of evening and daytime home groups.

We learn together about the Christian faith, discuss, laugh and pray together, as we try to become better disciples.

New members are always welcome.

If you would like to join a home group, or find out more about them, please contact

Stella Warne 01329 847338 or Kay Dunleavy 01329 312552.

Pte Herbert Walter Bungey 3rd battalion Wiltshire Regiment Herbert was born in Titchfield to Walter and Caroline Bungey. In 1911 he was a grocer’s apprentice and was living in West Street, Titchfield. Herbert joined the Duke of Edinburgh’s Wiltshire Regiment 3rd Battalion. During the war the 3rd battalion had responsibility for carrying out home defence duties. Herbert was stationed in Portland and it appears he was suffering from depression. He died on 17th September 1915 by his own hand. He was aged just 20.

Our website is an important communications channel through which we can establish contact with both new and existing members. We are now seeking a ‘Web Administrator’ who will take on the responsibility, in conjunction with a Committee member, to keep the site up-to-date as required maybe every three weeks. The position, which is a voluntary one, is ideal for someone with ‘web’ experience and a creative ambition who can spare a few hours a month to support our very worthwhile charity. If you are interested please E-mail : [email protected] or leave a message on our studio phone : 01329 664364 and we will get back to you asap.

Titchfield Commemorative Album A fascinating album of photographs and cuttings, compiled by the late Mary Burton, commemorating Titchfield at the Millennium, has been donated by the family to the Titchfield History Society.

It has been incorporated into the Society’s archive at the Community Centre, and is available for viewing by arrangement with Marilyn Wilton-Smith, telephone 01329 843822. The Society is currently seeking a suitable exhibition site, where this album and other historical and commemorative texts in its possession can be made more easily accessible.

The Meon Valley Pilgrimage Trail 2015 Between 2006-2011 walkers from the villages of the Meon Valley met on the nearest Saturday to St Wilfrid’s Day (12th October) to walk stages of the route possibly taken by St Wilfrid, Bishop of York in the late 7th century, as he travelled the length of the river converting the Meonwara.

After a year’s break we set out from Titchfield Haven on 12th October 2013 to repeat the exercise. This year the walk will take us from Wickham to Droxford. If you enjoy an easy country walk please join us as we start from St Nicholas church in Wickham at 1.00pm on Saturday 10th October. After a 6-mile walk, with a chance to look round St Peter’s,Soberton, we aim to arrive at St Mary and All Saints, Droxford by 4.30pm for refreshments and a short service in the church.

This is a linear walk, and as there is no direct bus service you may need to consider car-sharing.

Copies of the guide booklet ‘In the Steps of St Wilfrid’ are on sale in some local churches. For any enquiries please ring Robert Goulson on 01329 832915

Titchfield Festival Theatre St Margarets Lane September's production at St Margarets Arts is the classic farce "See How They Run". High jinks at the vicarage make this a delight to thrill all ages; four vicars, a bishop, an escaped German P.O.W, the town frump and a sexy actress will make this a night to remember! It will run at 7.30 pm from Wednesday 9th to Saturday 19th September.

The last production in the summer season of The Bard at the Barn is "The Merry Wives of Windsor". It is said that Queen Elizabeth was so taken with the character of Sir John Falstaff that she asked Shakespeare for a play showing Sir John in love, and this was the result.

Less love than profit-seeking, we see Falstaff trying to fill his shrinking purse by wooing the respectable Windsor wives of two local worthies, Ford and Page. The "merry wives" are not amused, and seek their revenge by various hilarious means, making for a riotous evening.

The play runs from Wednesday 23rd September to Saturday 3rd October at 7.30 pm in The Great Barn, Mill Lane, Titchfield.

The Rowans Hospice Summer Fete The Mayor of Havant will officially open The Rowans Hospice Annual Summer Fete at 1pm on Sunday 6th September. The fete, which takes place on Purbrook Heath, opposite the Hospice between 12.30 and 4pm will be a fun, traditional, family event which has something for everyone. Entertainment in the Arena will include music, dancing and a fun dog show, and there are over 60 stalls selling homemade produce and crafts and there are plenty of games and competitions to take part in. There will also be a display of vintage cars. Children can be kept entertained with ice creams, face painting and children’s rides. Other highlights include The Rowans Hospice Grand Summer Draw which will take place at 3.30pm with a first prize of £1,000 Thomas Cook Holiday Vouchers plus lots of other prizes. Raffle tickets are available for £1 each and are on sale at the Summer Fete until the time of the draw. Karen Kay, Events Fundraiser at The Rowans Hospice, said: “This event is a lovely day out for all the family and, come rain or shine, the atmosphere is amazing. We have fantastic support from the local community, and hope that they will come along to this event to help raise funds for the Hospice. Although there is no entry fee, please bring along your pennies to enjoy all the fun activities which in turn raise vital funds for local hospice care. “I would also like to thank all the volunteers who help run the fete; without their dedication and enthusiasm, we would not be able to organise such a wonderful event.” Entry to the Summer Fete is free and there is organised car parking.

Titchfield Abbey WI The centenary of the National Federation of Womens' Institutes actually falls on Wednesday 16th September, although you may have seen many reports and also television programmes of different events celebrating this special birthday, including HM The Queen opening the Annual Meeting at the Royal Albert Hall a little earlier in the year.

To celebrate locally, the Titchfield Abbey W.I. raised funds initially by raffling a beautiful patchwork quilt made by member Sandi Jones. This raised the sum of £260; £40 was added to this by the Titchfield Village Trust and Community Funding by Fareham Borough Council of £975; the total of this was £1,275 which is the cost of having a picnic bench made with a brass plaque celebrating the centenary and installation. The inauguration of the picnic bench, specifically aimed for use by people with young children in the play area of Barry's Meadow in Titchfield, will be on the afternoon of Wednesday 16th September.

All will be welcome at to attend this event between 2.30 and 4.30 pm at Barry’s Meadow. Further information and arrangements for photography either before or on the day can be obtained by contacting Sandi Jones on 01329 847930 or by email [email protected].

The next meeting of Titchfield Abbey WI will be held on Tuesday 8 September starting at 9.30am at Titchfield Community Centre, when there will be a talk entitled "Just a Bunch of Flowers" with a demonstration, given by Mary Holliday-Bishop of NAFAS. Visitors are always welcome to group meetings which are held on the second Tuesday of each month starting at 9.30am.

Titchfield Evangelical Church News from St Peter’s

Rahab was from a race of idolaters. Her home was in rooms built into the city walls of Jericho and she was well known as a prostitute. It seems that she befriended the two spies whom Joshua had sent into the city to check out the kind of defence they had. Later in the story, word got out that there were spies in the camp and a search was made. Rahab hid them on her roof, under some flax. When safe enough, she let them down from a window by a cord. They promised that her family would not be harmed in any ensuing bloodshed and Joshua kept that promise.

Obviously, one of the spies, named Salmon had become fond of her and , later on, they were married. Their son Boaz (see below) married Ruth so both of these ladies were mothers in Jesus' line !

Ruth was another foreign lady in the chain. Naomi, a widow, and her two sons left their home and travelled to the land of Moab to find a better life. After some time there, the two sons married local Moabite girls but then the two sons both died. She thought that the two wives of her sons would wish to stay in their homeland but Ruth insisted on going along with her mother-in-law, saying that she would share her land and that Naomi's God would become her God. They had no resources so Ruth went to work gleaning whatever she could of the grain left after the reapers. The land happened to belong to Boaz who soon noticed the young gleaner and told his workers to leave plenty for her. Naomi hit on a plan which eventually saw the marriage of Ruth to Boaz, an extremely wealthy man! So, all ended happily ! Ruth and Boaz had a son named Obed who had a son named Jesse - the father of King David

Bathsheba became the wife of King David. He had seen her bathing and sent for her. Later, he arranged for her husband, Uriah, to be killed in battle. Bathsheba would have been unable to deter David in his plans but she became a faithful wife to him. Following the death of their first baby a second son was born and he became the famous and wise King Solomon. He valued his mother greatly. She became the first of the mothers from whom Jesus was descended.

Elizabeth was married to Zacharias a priest. They had no children for many years of their marriage , but, in their later years, Zacharias was met in the temple by the Angel Gabriel who told him that he and his wife would have a son, to be named John, who would be very precious to God. He questioned this because of their age and was made dumb until the birth. Elizabeth did conceive, and later bore a son who became known as John the Baptist.

Mary, in the well known story, also had a visit from the Angel Gabriel, to tell her that she would become the most honoured mother mentioned in the Bible as she was to become mother of Jesus . Soon after this, she went to visit her cousin, Elizabeth and Elizabeth, rejoicing in the news, was prompted to say what we now know as the Magnificat. Mary suffered shame, but never doubted her Son and became highly favoured of God, a shining example of obedience and submission in the Father's will.

If you would like to consult Jesus' lineage, read Matthew, chapter 1. Details from Abraham onwards.

(part 2)

Following our usual summer break, the homegroups at St Peter’s are looking forward to meeting together again in September for fellowship, to learn together and discuss aspects of our faith, to pray together and have as much tea and cake as we can fit into a meeting!

The new course we will be studying is entitled:

‘Can we build a better world? ---Learning from William Wilberforce’

This course is produced by ‘York Courses’ and follows the same format as this year’s successful Lent course.

This 5-part course is highly recommended and looks to be very interesting as we draw on lessons from the past in the hope and desire to build a better world for today.

Homegroups are a wonderful way to get to know your Church family and to grow and develop your Christian faith together. Groups meet in the evening or daytime during the week, normally fortnightly and usually in one of the church family’s home.

If you are interested in joining a group for this new course please contact Stella Warne (01329 847338) or Kay Dunleavy (01329 312552) and they will be happy to direct you to the appropriate group for you.

Titchfield News

Some short time ago I received a phone call from a constituent telling me about his very rain driven walk, with his dog, alongside the Titchfield canal to Titchfield Haven. When he arrived at the Haven there was nowhere for the gentleman and his dog to shelter. Some two days later I was passing the Abbey Garden Buildings site at Segensworth and noticed an eight sided gazebo which in my view would be ideal for dogs and owners in the rain. I talked about the concept to the Rangers at the Haven and the gazebo was later checked out by the rangers and Haven volunteers. Some six weeks later it was installed in the garden adjacent to the café at the Haven. Result, dogs, owners and The Haven delighted!

Many of you will remember the Hampshire County Council contractors Amey who last year provided nearly fifty volunteers to clean out several hundred yards of the Canal and banks and remove many tons of debris which was stopping a clean flow of water, fish and other aquatic beings from using the canal. They did a wonderful job and have been congratulated by many.

However it has not stopped there!

Amey are returning, and will be cleaning out more debris and rubbish including broken branches and trees, and improving the flow of water from near the bridge at the A27 at Mill Lane, Titchfield and the bridge at East Street, Titchfield. This work will improve the water flows and reduce, we all hope, the incidents of flooding at certain village homes.

It doesn’t even stop there.

About a year ago I promised a new path from the Titchfield entrance to the canal up to Cow Bridge. Matters were delayed by the Environment Agency but approval has now been given and preliminary work has commenced. It is hoped that work will be concluded before Autumn of 2015.

Avril Hiett, who has died aged 80, lived in Titchfield for thirty-four years after moving with her husband, John, from Sussex in 1981. Born in a mining community in South Wales, Avril moved with her parents and siblings to Sussex when she was a child and eventually took up a career as a nurse before marrying John, living in Somerset and various places in Wales, before settling back in Sussex.

Avril spent many years working as a ward sister in a neurological hospital in Haywards Heath, where she ran a very tight ship, before moving to Titchfield where she continued her career as a staff nurse at Princess Anne hospital in Southampton. There she worked in the recovery room looking after babies born by Caesarean section sending them on their way “Come on my lovely, open your eyes” with a latent Welsh accent.

Avril joined the congregation at St Peter’s and quickly became involved in the life of the church looking after the younger children in the Sunday School. Joining in village life she was active in the Titchfield Bridge and Bowling Clubs, used her culinary skills as a helper at the Wednesday Luncheon Club and produced her famous Welsh cakes for the Art Show and the church fete.

Avril had travelled the world helping John in his conference business, but had a particularly soft spot for Menton in the South of France. After John retired they would spend the winters there, hiring an apartment, living as the French do, and loving every minute of it.

Her great love, of course, was her family, delighting in the lives of her two children and nine grandchildren. The first five having already graduated, and the last, at Oxford University, only a few days before she died on the 18th July.

Danny Steer, a stalwart of the Titchfield Pantomime group, has died aged 89. Panto group producer and director Maureen Taylor writes; “Danny was a consummate actor with a really good singing voice and he never needed a microphone, you could hear him from the dressing room. He played some great characters delighting in the costumes created for him. I feel honoured to have played many a part alongside him over the 30 years we were in the group together.”

Sixty years after she fled Vienna during World War II, an elderly Jewish woman, Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren), starts her journey to retrieve family possessions seized by the Nazis, among them Klimt's famous painting 'Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I'. Together with her inexperienced but plucky young lawyer Randy Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds), she embarks upon a major battle which takes them all the way to the heart of the Austrian establishment and the U.S. Supreme Court, and forces her to confront difficult truths about the past along the way. 1510 Titchfield Community Association Ancient Woodlands

By Robert Blake

Jonathon Huet from Sussex gave a very interesting talk to the Gardeners’ Club on the Ancient Woodlands of Britain. The definition of an ‘ancient woodland’ is one that has existed since 1600, where the soil has remained undisturbed and supports such delicate flora as oxlips, primroses, wild garlic and lichen. Man will have managed these woodlands by pollarding (e.g. hornbeams) and coppicing (e.g. hazel and ash), but not planting. Trees were rarely planted before Tudor times and the first writings on the subject of deforestation and replanting were by Arthur Standish in 1611.

At the end of the last ice age, c.12,000BC, the climate started to warm up quickly with the appearance of tundra, then alpines followed by dwarf species of trees such as the birch in the Scottish highlands. By 7000BC it became much warmer and the trees grew larger with Scots pine and birch in the far north, hazel and aak in the north and west, and lime in the south. It is estimated that 97% of Britain was eventually covered by woodland but today that has shrunk to 8-10%, one of the lowest in Europe. However, we do have some of the oldest and diverse ancient woodlands, examples of which are: Hatfield Forest (1049 acres) in Essex and Bradfield Woods in Suffolk, which has been under continuous coppice management since 1252.

The Weald which begins north east of Petersfield and extends across Surrey and

Kent in the north, and Sussex in the south. The Romans cut down many of these trees to use as fuel for smelting iron oxide. They had 33 iron mines in England of which 22 were in the Weald. Closer to home, the Forest of Bere, now much fragmented, was a

source of oak for the Navy to use in shipbuilding during the 18th century, although more oak was used in the tanning industry at the time.

Wistman’s Wood near Two Bridges on Dartmoor is predominantly of oak, the oldest being 400-500 years old. It is believed to be a leftover from the ancient forest that covered Dartmoor c.7000BC. The tree branches and surrounding boulders are smothered in moss and lichens giving an eerie feel, and the wood is home to a large population of adder!

Jonathon ended his talk by emphasising the importance of preserving these ancient woodlands, each of which has its own unique eco-system, vital to the survival of a wide range of flora and wildlife living beneath the canopy. They also help to maintain genetic variability amongst our native tree population, which is important in combating future diseases. Pauline Steel has been organising tea dances at Titchfield Community Centre for 30 years and having been thanked for her charity work by the Mayor of Fareham she was presented with a framed picture of the event by Community Centre chairman Julian Gibbs at a tea dance afternoon.

The picture had been signed by all the dancers who enjoy the sessions which were started by Pauline and her then dance partner, the late Ernie Fielding, back in the 1980s to provide people with a social occasion in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. All proceeds from the dances go to the Community Centre.

Dancing and Fundraising for 30 years

At the beginning of August, Titchfield History Society acted as hosts when delegates from a conference arranged by Southampton University to celebrate the 600th anniversary of the battle of Agincourt, visited Titchfield, and the Great Barn and Abbey were amongst the venues.

Both have associations with this historic event. Henry V stayed at the Abbey prior to leaving for France and the war, and there is strong evidence that the Great Barn was built to house goods destined for the war.

About 70 delegates enjoyed a hog roast at the barn prior to a conducted tour of the Abbey. They were given an introduction to the Barn and its recent rejuvenation to a theatre by Kevin Fraser, followed by a talk "The Kingdom of France in 1415, between Peace and War", this talk was given by Bertrand Schnerb. Amongst the delegates were a number of overseas guests as well as notable attendees from the UK who were fascinated by the significant place that Titchfield holds in history.

Those who were at church for the All Age Service at the beginning of July would have

heard Susan announce that C Zone, our Sunday School style activity, was suspended during July and August.

The period since then has given time to consider afresh the opportunity we offer at St Peter’s for children and their families.

Family life, especially for those with children, places substantial demands on time and energy. There is often too much to squeeze into the ‘free time’ that remains after school and work commitments are satisfied. Prioritising time for church is important, even necessary, if the sense of belonging to God’s wider family is to be realised. We do of course offer opportunities for children and their families at church other than on a Sunday: Messy Church and Teddy Bear Praise are regular activities where nurture of the children’s spiritual development is an important part of the intention shared by all who plan or support them.

Our ongoing ministry is to give families with children encouragement to come to the 10am Sunday morning service. Sharing worship together in thanksgiving and praise strengthens our spiritual life…..and children as well as adults need opportunities to share in worship: observing, taking part where they can, learning through

our collective witness all that it means to know and love God.

Conversations have already begun with some families, and will extend to others about how we can best provide for the needs of children in church. Families of course often use the children’s corner. That area has been refreshed and a selection of material for children aged between 4 and 10 years added to the resources there.

We have created ‘Busy Bags’ which are collections of resources based on a theme, contained in purpose-made bags. The resources include stories, puzzles and activities based on Bible stories and/or people from the Old and New Testaments. There will be bags for ages 4-6, 6-8 and 8-10 years and they can be used in pews or in the children’s area. As time goes by we can add to the variety of themes. The idea is that as well as being encouraged and supported in worship by their families, children will also have some focus at their level to explore. At the end of a service the bag can be left in the children’s corner.

Either Helen Perry or Edwina Day, or another specifically designated person, will be present at Church each Sunday to welcome and talk to families seeking to make use of the children’s area or to borrow one of the bags or indeed just to talk. If anyone wishes to contact either Edwina or Helen with thoughts or ideas about this article please email us at [email protected].

12Titchfield Village Trust

13

We understand that many people don’t know what the Village Trust is or have even heard of it. One person told us that they were too young to join and might do so as they got older! The aim, here then, is to look to the future to see what we may be able to achieve in say the next few years; to highlight what we have achieved in the recent past and to help people to understand what we do and how we are run.

With the changes to the A27 and the provision of the Stubbington by-pass it is imperative that we all look at how we can make Titchfield village, not just a better place, but a safer place, by preventing it becoming a far worse ‘rat run’ for motorists than it is now. To this end we are planning to set up a working group to look at ideas and suggestions from the public on how best this can be achieved. Some ideas we already have are:

• Sleeping policemen on Titchfield approach roads, plus Coach Hill and Bridge Street.

• Traffic calming on St. Margaret’s Lane.

• 20mph for all approach roads plus Bridge Street, Coach Hill, Mill Lane, St.Margaret’s Lane and Posbrook Lane.

• Make the canal car park much larger, for visitors, especially from the Stubbington side of Titchfield

More creative ideas suggested are:

Full Square cobbled and ‘pedestrian only’

• European Style – café culture and market - with access for buses, local business and emergency vehicles only.

• Bicycle riders to dismount in Square

• Residents of the Square would be allowed to park in permit holder places or in Barry’s Meadow car park.

Anyone who is interested in making Titchfield a better place and who would like to be part of our working group should contact our chair, details on next page.

Some of the areas where TVT has been active recently include:

➢ Being involved in consultation regarding the creation of the new country park on the other side of the A27 and ensuring that this land, provided by the developers of the new care home behind the Holiday Inn Hotel, can be used for that purpose only

➢ Ensuring that the legal requirement of sufficient parking spaces are provided when the flats in Southampton Hill are complete

➢ Helping set up Speed Watch in roads around Titchfield

➢ Negotiating with Fareham Borough Council regarding changes to parking in the village

➢ Obtaining funding to protect the school from air and noise pollution as a result of the upgrade to the A27

➢ Publication of the Titchfield Village Walks pamphlet.

TVT is a group of like minded local residents who are keen to promote high standards of planning and architecture in the village and its immediate surroundings. We also aim to help inform the public on the geography, history, natural history and architecture of the village and assist towards the preservation, protection, development and improvement of features, which are of historical or public interest in the village.

TVT is run by a committee of seven members. We meet prior to the open meetings held three times a year to discuss issues relating to the village. We are also in contact, and attend council and other meetings, should issues arise that might affect the village. Our public meetings are attended by our local councillors and provide an opportunity to meet and discuss issues with them. Anyone may join the Trust. They just have to fill in a form giving their details and pay the £5 annual donation. We have over 120 paid up members who offer their opinions, express their concerns and acknowledge success in maintaining and improving life in the village.
