Kentucky Safe Schools Week Daily Announcements:

(School announcements to encourage involvement in Kentucky Safe Schools Week 2016)

Day 1

The Kentucky Center for School Safety announces Kentucky Safe Schools Week (October 16-22, 2016). This year’s theme is “Be the HERO; STOP the Bullying!” which focuses on everyday heroes, their roles in our lives and how each one of us need to step up and “Be the HERO” when the opportunities arise both in school and in life.

“Honor”, “Encourage”, “Respect” and “Opportunity” will be the powerful words emphasized in our campaign to empower students to choose to be a HERO either openly or silently using an online tipline. Being a HERO isn't just a label for a time it's an attitude and a code to live by.

Each day this week we will talk about the letters of the word “H.E.R.O.” and tell you how you can be a better person.

Today we will talk about the letter “H”, the first letter of the word “HERO”!

I will strive to: “H” Honor others and myself by not bullying or participating in bullying activities

When something bad happens at school or someone mistreats you, how do you feel? You should remember others feel that way too. Did you know, you can honor others by not bullying or participating in bullying activities? You can stand up for yourself and others and make them feel they are important. When you see someone being bullied, remember you need to be the hero and not join in with him or her, but help the person in need. If you feel you cannot help, please share what is going on with an adult hero at your school. Remember you are being honorable when you help others.

(Italicized information will be added after the main announcement each day in regard to the SSW page of “Ideas for Safe Schools Week: Daily Dress-up and Activities”)

If you have invited some honorable officials to your school today – please have the students recognize that they will be at school today. If a picture is planned with the students wearing red, white, and blue, this could be announced too. Wow, what a nice day to be an honorable patriotic hero!)

Day 2 The Kentucky Center for School Safety announces Kentucky Safe Schools Week (October 16-22, 2016) This year’s theme is “Be the HERO; STOP the Bullying!” which focuses on everyday heroes, their roles in our lives and how each one of us need to step up and “Be the HERO” when the opportunities arise both in school and in life.

Today we are going to talk about the letter “E”, the second letter of the word “HERO”!

I will strive to: “E” Encourage others to stop actions that could be perceived as bullying

Have you ever noticed that sometimes a student in your school continues to pick on a particular person, and they will not leave them alone? For some reason they seem to want to make that person feel bad. If you have had that experience you know what it feels like and should be careful not to participate, even if others say they are just teasing. Sometimes we think we are just teasing, but if you were in the shoes of the other person what would you think? Any time something could be thought of as bullying to anyone, it should be stopped or avoided. Remember everyone wants to feel like they belong and have friends. Be a hero in your class and at school. Everyone can look to you as their friend and that will make you feel good about yourself and others.

If you have invited emergency workers to your school for lunch – please announce that they will be in the building and will be having lunch and a picture made with students that are dressed like them. What a great day to enjoy talking to your community emergency workers as your lunchroom heroes prepare a healthy meal for them and the students. What a great day!

Day 3

The Kentucky Center for School Safety announces Kentucky Safe Schools Week (October 16-22, 2016) This year’s theme is “Be the HERO; STOP the Bullying!” which focuses on everyday heroes, their roles in our lives and how each one of us need to step up and “Be the HERO” when the opportunities arise both in school and in life.

Today we are going to talk about the letter “R”, the third letter of the word “HERO”!

I will strive to:

“R” Respect the everyday heroes in authority around me

There are so many heroes around us and we should really take time to think about what they do for everyone. If you have an SRO in your school, please tell them

how they are your everyday hero. There are so many adults in the office at school that work hard to be your everyday heroes and they need to know they are appreciated. Remember our everyday heroes make our world a better place. Thank you to our “school heroes”!

If you are honoring your school resource officers today – please announce this to the school. Remember to mention the thinking caps students are wearing if they are dressing with caps today and perhaps the resource officer could have a picture made with all the students with thinking caps on today. What an honor to privilege it is for our schools to have these wonderful SROs in our school!!!

Day 4

The Kentucky Center for School Safety announces Kentucky Safe Schools Week (October 16-22, 2016) This year’s theme is “Be the HERO; STOP the Bullying!” which focuses on everyday heroes, their roles in our lives and how each one of us need to step up and “Be the HERO” when the opportunities arise both in school and in life.

Today we are going to talk about the letter “O”, the fourth letter of the word “HERO”!

I will strive to:

“O” Take Opportunities to become a HERO

Do you like it when someone pats you on the back or compliments you when you do something good? Of course we all like others to be there to support us in the good times. But, when someone makes a mistake, do you laugh at them or take the opportunity to be an everyday hero and tell him or her you understand and that everyone makes mistakes. You can help by making others feel good about themselves instead of sad. Many times your kindness and caring attitude can help a

person more than you will ever know. Remember you can be an everyday hero and make others feel better. Wow, how neat is that?

If you have invited police officers to your school, please announce this and the time when they can have a picture made with the student that are wearing their H.E.R.O badges. Also, remind them to take the pledge against bullying. What a neat day!

Day 5

The Kentucky Center for School Safety announces Kentucky Safe Schools Week (October 16-22, 2016) This year's theme is “Be the HERO; STOP the Bullying!” which focuses on everyday heroes, their roles in our lives and how each one of us need to step up and “Be the HERO” when the opportunities arise both in school and in life.

Today we are going to sum up the week and talk about the word “Appreciate”!

I will strive to:

Appreciate our everyday heroes at school and let them know how important they are to us.

Do you ever tell the adults at your school how much you appreciate them and that they are your everyday heroes? When you see someone helping you with your bus or car ride home, take a minute and tell them they are your hero and you appreciate them. At lunch, did you thank the heroes that prepared you such a wonderful meal? Did you ever thank the hero that makes you school so neat and clean? Sometimes we take others for granted and don’t even thank them for what they do and how they help us through the day at school. These people are our everyday heroes and

we should be thankful and tell them how important they are to us. Thank you school heroes!

If you are having the students wear their school spirit colors and shirts, please announce that your schools is united together against bullying. Also, if you are honoring the everyday heroes at your school with lunch or anything else you have planned, please announce this too. Great photo op for school spirit – “go team” let’s stop others from bullying and be an everyday Hero!

Thanks for joining us by celebrating Kentucky Safe Schools Week and also for everything you do to help others make your school safe.

Please remember to take the online “HERO” pledge.

I pledge to:
