February is recognized as Black History Month in the U.S. and Canada, and KCTS 9 is off ering new programs this month that honor the history and culture of the Black community. But our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion goes far beyond a single month; we strive to provide programs that refl ect those values every day.

Voice of Freedom BH MON Feb 15 | 9pOn Easter Sunday 1939, contralto Marian Anderson stepped up to a microphone in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. As an African American, she had been barred from performing at Constitution Hall by the Daughters of the American Revolution, and fi rst lady Eleanor Roosevelt publicly resigned her D.A.R. membership in protest. This fi lm tells Anderson’s story, leading up to her landmark performance.

The Black Church: This is Our Story, This is Our Song BH TUESDAYS | Feb 16 and 23 | 9p Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., takes viewers on a journey through the rich and complex evolution of the Black church to reveal how it has infl uenced nearly every chapter of the African American story and continues to animate Black identity today.

Please note: President Biden plans to address Congress on a Tuesday in February. Our broadcast of his address may aff ect our schedule – and the premiere of The Black Church could change. Please check KCTS9.org/schedule for updates.

Following its premiere, The Black Church will be available on KCTS 9 Passport.

Mr. SOUL! MON Feb 22 | 10pBefore Oprah, before Arsenio, there was Mr. SOUL! During the civil rights movement, Ellis Haizlip reconceived a Harlem Renaissance and ushered giants and rising stars of Black American culture onto national television with his groundbreaking PBS series SOUL!

Look for this symbol throughout the guide to fi nd programs that focus on Black history. BH

Beyond the Elements THREE-PART SERIES PREMIERE WED Feb 3 | 9p Picking up where he left off in NOVA’s popular special, “Hunting the Elements,” David Pogue sets out on a worldwide quest to fi nd the key molecules and chemical reactions that have paved the way for human civilization, life and even the universe as we know it. Along the way, he uncovers the simple principles that produce such a dizzying diversity of matter from elements on the periodic table.

Europe’s New Wild FOUR-PART SERIES PREMIERE WED Feb 3 | 10p In an inspiring story of the wild rebirth of a continent, this series reveals the spectacular resurgence of nature across Europe’s most varied and breathtaking landscapes. From the lynx of Spain and Portugal to the bison of the Carpathian Mountains in Romania and the incredible range of animals in the stunning Danube River Delta, wildlife all across Europe are returning in remarkable numbers.

9to5: The Story of a Movement SAT Feb 6 | 11:30p When Dolly Parton sang “9 to 5,” she was doing more than just shining a light on the fate of American working women. Parton was singing the true story of a movement that started with 9to5, a group of Boston secretaries in the early 1970s. Their goals were simple – better pay, more advancement opportunities and an end to sexual harassment – but their unconventional approach attracted the press and shamed their bosses into change. Featuring interviews with 9to5’s founders, as well as actor and activist Jane Fonda, this is the inspiring story of a fi ght that changed the American workplace.

Josephine Baker: The Story of An Awakening BH MON Feb 8 | 9p This documentary explores the fascinating life of Black superstar Josephine Baker. Leaving America in 1925, Baker pursued a stage career in France, where she was hailed as “The Queen of Paris.” During World War II, she joined the French Resistance and was awarded the Croix de Guerre.

Her international fame, however, did not insulate her from racism in America. She joined the battle for civil rights, and in 1963, she spoke on stage with Martin Luther King Jr. during the famous March on Washington.
