At this time of year, much is written on the theme of personal commitment and renewal. Among the often-cited resolutions are “to spend more time with friends and family,” “develop a new skill or habit” or “support what you love.” (OK, that was a personal selection.)

Your fulfillment of these resolutions can begin by gathering your family and friends for the fifth season of Downton Abbey, which promises much romance, excitement and surprise. KCTS 9 helps you learn something new with fresh episodes of NOVA, Nature, SciTech Now and IN Close that bring you in-depth stories in science, nature, technology and civic life. In addition, we remain committed to providing educational experiences that boost learning at all ages, and to using the power of our unique public broadcasting platform to inspire a smarter world.

We start our 60th year with an exciting schedule that begins on a high note with a performance by the Vienna Philharmonic. From the new Masterpiece Mystery! Grantchester to Nature: Penguin Post Office, we hope you’ll find much to love in the new year on KCTS 9.

Thank you for your support, and as always, I would appreciate your feedback and comments.

RobDunlop, president & ceo [email protected]

from the president

As we begin our 60th year of public broadcasting, we send sincere thanks to our vibrant community of supporters in Washington and British Columbia.

Brain exercise? Absolutely! Brain fitness is on the agenda at all KCLS libraries for 2015 through the Mind Matters program series. Throughout the year, try free library programs to keep your brain fit and well nourished. Learn about memory loss; how food, stress and aging can affect your brain; and ways to counteract the winter blahs through meditation, yoga and even juggling for brain fitness. It’s YOUR mind. GangesWednesdays|10pThis sumptuous three-part series tells the story of the most extraordinary river in the world—the Ganges. Human life and nature bustle along her river banks, in a kaleidoscope of color and energy. From man-hunting tigers to giant lizards, here the wildlife is as diverse as the people. Traveling from the peaks of the Himalayas through frenetic cities to the teeming delta where the river meets the sea, this is a vibrant and colorful look at how the Ganges has shaped the wildlife, culture and beliefs of India.

SOLVING THE MYSTERYof DYING STARFISH

ON AMERICA’S WEST COAST

Starfish are dying by the millions up and down the West Coast, leading scientists to warn of the possibility of localized extinction of some species. After months of research, scientists have identified the pathogen at the heart of the starfish wasting disease. It’s a virus that’s different from all other viruses infecting marine organisms. KCTS 9/EarthFix multimedia journalist Katie Campbell has been covering this unfolding story for more than a year.

Visit our website at KCTS9.org/sick-starfish to see the latest article and video about this potentially serious phenomenon. It’s threatening starfish not only in the Puget Sound region but all along the Pacific coast of North America.

In her original report last January, Campbell followed scientists on their initial investigations into the mysterious epidemic. She captured shocking video of sick starfish literally tearing themselves apart. The resulting KCTS 9/EarthFix story was featured nationally on PBS NewsHour. It’s been viewed online more than 1 million times, becoming the fifth most viewed video of all time on the NewHour’s YouTube channel.

In the middle of the 19th century, a young Catalan man from Blanes is sent to Galicia to manage a small anchovy salting factory that is owned by one of the many Catalans who have settled there.

As a result of a romantic disappointment and political circumstances, he stays in Galicia and ends up setting up his own anchovy factory, too. His eldest son will have to struggle as his father did,

but this time his objective will be to transform the artisanal salting business into the canning of anchovies at the beginning of the industrial revolution in 20th century Galicia.
