VOLUME 18 NUMBER 6
from the presidentWe live in an amazing part of the world. The beauty of the Pacific Northwest has been well documented. But there are secrets still to be uncovered, and this month, we’re sharing a story that may surprise you. For the past year, we’ve been collaborating with the Seattle Aquarium, the University of Washington and other partners to unlock a real-life mystery. Wildlife Detectives: Mystery Sharks of Seattle (June 22) investigates one of the largest and most elusive sharks on the planet. Usually found in deep waters, sixgill sharks have been sighted and studied at shallow depths right here in Puget Sound. We’re exploring the science and research around these huge creatures, which have been seen just off the Seattle waterfront.
Another collaboration this month provides a follow-up to the powerful FRONTLINE documentary Chasing Heroin, which drew national attention to stories centered in Seattle. On June 6, KCTS 9 is collaborating with MOHAI to present The Heroin Epidemic: A Community Conversation, a town hall-style event moderated by KCTS 9’s Enrique Cerna.
These are just two examples of how KCTS 9 is committed to partnering with community organizations to explore compelling local stories and provide a platform for your voice.

One of the world’s largest and most elusive predatory sharks, the sixgill, has suddenly
appeared in Seattle’s waters. These creatures typically dwell in darkness, several thousand
feet beneath the ocean surface, and little is known about them. What would make
them appear in the shallows of Puget Sound, and what does it say about our oceans?
Researchers are hunting for answers. KCTS9.org/wildlife-detectives
