MINISTER’S MESSAGE
Welcome to the annual Victorian School Sports Awards
It is a pleasure to welcome you all to the iconic MCG to recognise the outstanding achievements of Victoria’s world-class young sportspeople.
The Victorian School Sports Awards represent the highest sporting accolades in Victoria’s government school system and it is fitting to celebrate our state’s most talented young athletes at such a significant and renowned symbol of sporting excellence.
Congratulations to each of today’s 50 award recipients.
I urge you to take some time today to reflect on all of the hard work that you have put in on the road towards taking the stage today. It has been a long road that has involved significant sacrifice for each of you.
I hope that today’s recognition encourages you to work hard in the years ahead, as you look forward to a future of continued health, productivity and achievement.
In the Education State, that is the kind of future that we want for every young Victorian.
That is why the Victorian Government has invested so heavily in building a world-class education system.
That investment has included the $148 million Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund, to make sure all students have the chance to participate in more physical activity. It also includes the $16 million School Pride and Sports Fund, which is building great new sporting facilities for students across the state.
In Victoria, we put a lot into our sport and sport gives us a lot back.
Whether we’re gathering at ovals to play or to cheer, sport brings Victorians together. Sport reminds us to support each other and embrace the people around us, no matter their background or circumstances.
When it comes to our schools, sport encourages young people to live healthy, active and engaged lives. It also teaches students about the importance of practice, patience, discipline and team work.
Students who thrive at sport often become leaders in their community.
That is why the Victorian School Sports Awards is not just about celebrating your sporting achievements, it is also about recognising your leadership qualities.
It is also about acknowledging the teachers, parents, coaches and school leaders who have supported you along the way.
You have all proven yourselves to be wonderful role models in your communities.
To all of you here today — whether you are receiving an award or celebrating the achievements of someone close to you — thank you for your dedication, perseverance and leadership.
I hope you enjoy this special celebration of your contribution to our state.
The Hon James Merlino, MPDeputy PremierMinister for Education

OVERVIEW
VICTORIAN SCHOOL SPORTS AWARDS
The Victorian School Sports Awards are the highest sporting accolades presented in Victoria’s government school system.
This annual event, held for the first time in 1994, rewards excellence across all categories of major school sports. The awards are given to students, teachers, parents and volunteers who have excelled or made an outstanding contribution to school sport.
In 2010, a new award recognising community partnerships between schools and local community groups was introduced to acknowledge the vital role that partnerships play in the development of Victorian sports.
This year, for the third time, we are delighted to present the Lindsay Gaze Sports Leadership Award, in honour of the seven-time Olympian and Basketball Hall of Fame legend. This award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to both school and community sport.
Forty three individual student awards, each known as a Sporting Blue, will be presented across eighteen categories to young athletes for their outstanding success in 2017.
The term Sporting Blue derives from the history of English sport. In 1936, during a boat race between Oxford and Cambridge Universities, a Cambridge oarsman tied a light blue ribbon to the bow of his boat (the colour of his school, Eton College). A dark blue ribbon was then ascribed to Oxford (the colour of Christ Church College).
Subsequently, a Sporting Blue became identified around the world as an accolade of sporting excellence by young people and is distinguished by a two-coloured ribbon attached to a traditional bronze medallion.
The Department of Education and Training believes it is fitting to present Sporting Blue awards as a reflection of the high standard of talent and dedication demonstrated by aspiring young athletes in Victorian government schools.

LINDSAY GAZE OUTSTANDING SPORTS LEADERSHIP AWARD
VicHealth is proud to support the annual Lindsay Gaze Outstanding Sports Leadership Award, which recognises outstanding leadership in the promotion of community and school sport.
Lindsay Gaze is a distinguished Olympian. He represented Australia in three Olympic Games before turning to coaching, where he quickly established himself as one of our country’s best basketball mentors. Inducted into the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame in 2004, he has worked tirelessly to share his remarkable knowledge of and passion for the game.
His contribution has not been restricted to the court. By serving as a member of the NBL Board and FIBA’s technical and rules committees, he has helped shape the structure of the game on a world-wide basis.
Lindsay also made a significant contribution to VicHealth. As a member of our Board for more than 10 years, he helped guide the governance and strategic direction of VicHealth, so that the benefits of better health and wellbeing can be enjoyed by all Victorians.
For 30 years, VicHealth has been working to improve the health and wellbeing of Victorians. More recently we have been creating more opportunities for less active Victorians to participate in sport and regular physical activity. Our focus is on engaging children, young people and women and girls, to work towards our goal of having 300,000 more Victorians physically active by 2023.
We congratulate today’s winner on this prestigious award.

VIRGINIA ALLENSwan Hill Specialist School
Virginia believes in providing equal opportunities for participation in sport to all, and her message of hard work and persistence has seen many students at Swan Hill Specialist School excel at competition level. In 2017, 31 students from Swan Hill Specialist School participated at regional level, 16 at state level and two at national level across swimming, cross country, lawn bowls and clay shooting. The flow-on benefit for the school is a student body that is resilient, engaged and connected to their school, as well as motivated to contribute to their community. The Swan Hill Specialist School community is both proud of, and grateful for, Virginia’s tireless work to support students.
MARK ROBINSONGlen Waverley Secondary College
Mark is committed to ensuring sport is accessible and enjoyable for all students, regardless of gender, culture or ability. In creating partnerships between Glen Waverley Secondary College and community organisations, sporting clubs and major sporting bodies, he has taught his students that the sporting industry presents opportunities not only for athletes, but also in administration, umpiring, coaching and support roles. With this in mind, Mark has also established mentoring opportunities and professional pathways programs for students, including programs with links to multicultural and indigenous organisations. Mark is also a champion of social justice causes and highlights for students the important role sport can play in raising awareness around issues and leading social change.

OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION AWARD
LAUREN NARDELLIBox Hill Senior Secondary College
Lauren runs the specialist netball program at Box Hill Senior Secondary College, assisting students at the recognised sporting school with development of their skills for higher level competition, as well as providing training in coaching and umpiring as a means of creating skilled sporting all-rounders. Lauren has also acted as a specialist coach and selector for the under 12 and under 15 state teams. Her work with, and links to, numerous domestic and representative netball clubs and associations has also helped to create strong community links with Box Hill Senior Secondary College and between players, clubs and families.
OUTSTANDING SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS AWARD
BALWYN NORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL
Through building strong links with local sporting clubs and community organisations, Balwyn North Primary School has fostered participation in sport for its students. Under the leadership of health and physical education coordinator, Sean de Morton, relationships have been built between the school and the Greythorn Falcons Football Club, the Bulleen Tennis Club, the North Balwyn Scouts, Badminton Victoria, the North Balwyn Bowls Club and Boroondara Council. While the key focus for the school is building a lifelong love of physical activity for all students, a bonus has been the sporting achievements attained by many students along the way, including one student being named best in the state for sport in 2015.
