In today’s highly competitive landscape, strong education is the key to development of anindividual which in turn contributes to the rapid progress of a nation. India boasts a long andglorious history in the field of education with universities such as Takshashila andglorious history in the field of education with universities such as Takshashila andNalanda, acknowledged as fountainheads of learning since times immemorial. Even today, Indiais home to a number of renowned higher education institutes which contributes to the growingeconomy of a Nation

I am proud to be a part of this edition of the Vibrant Gujarat newsletter which focuses on thed ti i i G j t O St t t l b li i th hil h f ki liteducation scenario in Gujarat. Our State strongly believes in the philosophy of making quality

education accessible and affordable for all. We believe and understand the importance thatearly education holds in one’s life. This is critical for a child’s long – term development. The statehas taken several initiatives to encourage early childhood education especially among girls. Dueto these efforts of last decade, the total literacy and female literacy rates of Gujarat hasincreased to 10.2% and 12.9% respectively, which is greater than the increase at national level.

By 2020, an estimated investment of USD 2646 Million is envisaged in Gujarat’s educationsector which includes development of two Knowledge Corridors and Multiple Centers ofExcellence. The policies adopted for achieving such lofty goals of development along with thesupport provided by the Government of Gujarat are covered at length in this edition ofnewsletter. I hope this edition gives the readers an interesting overview of Gujarat’s educationscenario.

Among several initiatives taken by the state government, the “Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat(KCG)” established by the Department of Education, stands out to be the backbone of the education sector. Number of initiatives have been introduced under KCG with focus on students as well as teachers. Major initiatives

Gujarat Council of Elementary Education (GCEE) has successfully implemented “Sarva ShikshaAbhiyan Mission (SSAM)” in all the districts of the state. The scheme provides free andcompulsory education to the Children of 6-14 years age group.

Primary Education

Getting primary education in Gujarat has been made exceptionally easy through various schemes and initiatives by the government.

To enhance the Girl’s primary education, “VidyaLaxmi Yojana” has been introduced. Under this scheme villages and cities with literacy rate less than 35% are covered.

Gujarat has a very strong base of primary education. Total number of educational institutions imparting primary education in the State were 40943 in 2011-12 as against 40723 in 2010-11. The number of pupils enrolled in these schools were 83.76 lakh in 2011-12 as against

A) In this era, when the importance of knowledge is increasing faster than ever, the realization that “Knowledge is Power” has dawned. Education and knowledge nurture minds, bring wisdom and create a superior world. The Government of Gujarat understands

about world’s environmental sustainability. The Knowledge Age youth need to be able to locate, assess, and represent new information faster. They need to be able to communicate inferences as well as work collaboratively with others. They need adaptation, creativity, innovation, and an abilityj

the importance of education for creating a better tomorrow, a better world. The strength and promise of any emerging economy is its youth. With India having the largest youth population, our Hon’ble Chief Minister believes in creating the right environment for our youth where education can shine and not only

adaptation, creativity, innovation, and an ability to understand the “big picture” of the events surrounding them.

This can’t be done simply by adding additional skills and dispositions to the existing curriculum. A new mindset is required - one that can take into account novel meanings of knowledge andwhere education can shine and not only

With this vision in mind, we decided to host a national level Education Summit that provides a platform for all the experts in education sector across the world to share their knowledge ideas

education, so as to train our youngsters across sectors and economic backgrounds.

Q. A number of countries and foreign Universities also participated in the event. How do you envisage India becoming a global

Q. Could you please elaborate on the Knowledge Corridors and Centers of Excellence being developed in Gujarat?

A. The basic concept of Knowledge Corridors isy g g gknowledge center?

A) Along with Italy, the country partner for the summit, we had participation from around 40 countries including the US, UK, Brazil and Australia. Countries around the globe have

Himachal Pradesh was adjudged the best state in "Health & Investment" sectors in the category of big states. The awards were presented by Union Minister for Rural Development Jairam Ramesh.

During his visit to Ahmedabad for inaugurating a three-day Japan festival, Asako mentioned that Japan is looking to set up offices, factories and businesses in the state. He added that the expectations are so high that more than 100 companies participated in the Vibrant Gujarat summit 2013. He further remarked that while about 10 of our companies signed MoUs with the state government during Vibrant Gujarat 2013, there are many Japanese companies who are watching and studying Gujarat.

Thol Wildlife Sanctuary Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary

Covering an area of around 6 sq. kilometers, the sanctuary is known as “safe haven for birds”.
