Action, Linking and Helping

Action verbs tell what action someone or

something is doing (The action can be physical or mental.)

Ex. The band members danced on platforms while the audience enjoyed the music.

What are the action verbs? What type of action do they express?

An action verb is Transitive when the action is directed from the subject (audience) to the object of the verb (music).

The Object comes after the verb- tells who or what receives the action.

Linking verbs show a state of being. Instead of

expressing action, it shows that something exists.

Ex. The band will feel exhausted after playing for three hours.

What is the linking verb in this sentence?

Linking verbs are Intransitive because they never take an object.

A linking verb (feel) links the subject (band) to a word in the predicate (exhausted).

appear, sound, seem, become and grow

Helping verbs (or auxiliary verbs) help the action or linking verb

Ex. I might feel like playing basketball later.
