I don't know that I have looked forward to it more than I have this year. It certainly has been a tough win- ter - for us, for our horses and for our farms and pastures, but looking through the mud to the green grass poking through, there is a lot to be excited about, and this year for VADA/Nova is no exception. Coming up first is our April licensed show at Morven Park, April 11-12 (volunteers needed, of course). With luck, we will dry out by then and enjoy some well-deserved spring weather, as well as great competition with the qualifying classes for Young Riders and young horses. Up next is our first clinic of 2010 - the "three-in-one" riding, fix-a-test and "learn to scribe and score" clinic with Lisa Schmidt, R judge and Grand Prix rider from NJ, held at Looking Glass Farm in Hamilton (see registration materials in this newsletter and on the web site). The focus of this clinic will be on getting you and your horse ready for the show ring through focused instruction followed by practice tests. On Sunday, in conjunction with the practice tests, we are offering training to new scribes and scorers in a relaxed, no-pressure atmosphere Come learn a new skill! Perhaps most exciting, however, are the new developments surrounding our June licensed show at Morven Park. At the USEF Convention in January, I was approached by Jennifer Keeler, Director of Dressage for USEF, and asked if we would be willing to host the Eastern Selection Trial for the FEI World Breeding Championships ( held this year in Aachen Germany). The selection trial was originally planned in conjunction with the Raleigh CDI, but the cancellation of the CDI portion of that show had necessitated a change of location. Of course we are thrilled that our show was being considered and jumped at the chance. This has meant some significant changes to the VADA/Nova Summer show - perhaps most important among them that it now becomes a "Level 4 " show (in the new USEF levels system), and as such is held to the same standards as, for example, a Regional Championship. We have added the three FEI judges who will be judging each of the three Selection Trials, Gary Rockwell (O), Jeanne McDonald (I) and Natalie Lamping (I), to our existing roster of judges. And we have added warm up classes for the young horses on Friday, and will be having a competitors' party on Satur- day night. I hope you will all take this opportunity to either show under some of our finest FEI judges, or come and watch some of our area's top young horses as they attempt to qualify to represent the US in Aachen this year. Our volunteers will be the key to a successful show, and of course you can get to see the action "up close and personal" as a volunteer! I hope we can show USEF and our competitors that we truly do run some of the best shows around. So here's to less mud, green grass, warm temperatures and an exciting year ahead! PRELIMINARY SUMMARY MIN-UTES – VADA/Nova Board Meeting March 8, 2010 – Morven Park Classroom – 7:30 PM

The meeting was called to order about 7:40 PM and lasted until 9:20 PM. Ten of the 13 Board members were present. Three were excused. There was one guest. Treasurer’s Report: The checkbook balance as of March 8, 2010 is $8,290.25. The balance is low but there are additional deposits to be made, including a $1400 grant check from VADA covering two years. Our insurance premium for the year has been paid. VADA Report: Michelle Lachner was announced as VADA Volunteer of the Year at the VADA Banquet. The recipient of this award is selected by the VADA President. Officers for the year are Tina Longaker – President, Beth Rippel – Vice President, Jessie Ginsburg – Treasurer, and Alison Douglas – Secretary. The Purple Book costs $6 a copy to print and mail – the same amount the chapters contribute per member. VADA voted to hold a clinic at Morven Park the first weekend in April 2011. Their next meeting is April 18. Newsletter: The newsletter editor presented a comparison of the costs, and pros and cons of using First Class mail or bulk mail to send the newsletter. We do not plan on making any changes right now but will review these options on a regular basis. April Show: There are 30-35 entries so far; they have been coming in at a rate of one or two a day since the opening date. No one has signed up for Opportunity Classes yet. We are looking for sponsors and advertisers for the show programs. Clinics: Two people have signed up so far for the April clinic; we are confident there will be more. We will start publicizing the July clinic in May. Storage Sheds: Things were moved last weekend from the former storage sheds to the new ones. They cleaned out a lot of junk, and managed to get all of the remainder into the new, smaller sheds although there is still organi-zation to do, and decisions to be made about some of the things which were found. It has been asked that no one purchase any hospitality items for schooling shows before checking to see if we have it already. The four people who worked on this project and are not Board members were voted 8 hours volunteer time each.

Year End Awards: The Year End Awards chair will keep the poster boards from our schooling shows for checking purposes. There has been some discussion as to how to define “JR”. We (Nova) define JR as under 21 and YR as 16-21. All VADA chapters should agree to use the same standard. (Secretary Comment: BLMs define YR as 16-21 and JR as 18 and under.) We agreed to give partial proceeds from our May Schooling Show to support Kim Decker’s efforts to earn a place on the US Para-Equestrian Team which will represent the US at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky. 2011 Shows: We have our licenses for 2011 shows, and our 2011 dates at Morven Park for the March Schooling Show, the Youth Team in July, and the Schooling Show Championship in November. The next meeting is Monday, April 12 at 7:30 P.M. in the Morven Park classroom. Respectfully submitted, Nancy Stover

Member of the Month Diann Landau, a VADA/Nova member for 3 years, owns and manages a boarding facility in Lovettsville. She is also currently a substitute teacher for Loudoun county School district, while trying to get hired full time as an Earth Science or Art teacher. Prior to this she worked in

Animation for 20 years, working for both Disney Studios and Don Bluth Studios. Diann rode other people’s horses for years but finally got her own when she was sent to Ireland working for an animation studio. She was there for 8 years, where she evented through training level, and show jumped to 3’6”, she also trained to the British Horse Society Level II certification. She says that being in Ireland was a marvelous experience. Diann is also a USEA Level 1 Instructor. Diann has two current horses. Mithrandir ( aka Randye) is a coming 7 yr old Percheron mare that she started herself and is currently training at Training level. She has competed her a little and plans on doing so more. She also owns Frances Higgins ( aka Frani) a 17 year old Standardbred that she has evented through Beginner Novice and now just trail rides. Her hobbies are “mucking stalls” ( ha ha)!! Seriously, she loves to travel and also as an Art major she has illustrated several horse related books, most notably Sally O’Conner’s follow up book to “Commonsense Dressage” which is called “Essential Exercises” and “The ABC”S of Cross Country Design and Construction”. She also did the illustrations for Lisa Campbell’s book, “You can build jumps, etc”. Diann’s favorite volunteer position is scribing. She says, “It is always interesting to hear what the judges are looking for, and it has been very educational for me” She also jokingly says that “she has become what she used to make fun of: …..a woman of a certain age who gives up eventing and switches to Dressage’!!! Diann has also been a faithful volunteer at many of our shows but she has religiously been a ring steward at our yearly VADA/Nova Breed show for the last 3 years, where she keeps the show moving along really well!!! Say “Hi” to Diann next time you see her!!

VADA/Nova Hosts "Three in One" Spring Clinic

VADA/Nova is kicking off 2010 with a "Three-in-One" Spring Clinic with R judge and USDF Gold Medalist Lisa Schmidt on April 24-25 at Looking Glass Farm in Hamilton, VA.

Day 1: Riding Clinic with 8 rider spots and unlimited space for auditors. Emphasis will be on preparing for that first show of the season.

Day 2: Fix-a-test with additional rider spots. Build on your Day 1 experience by riding a test of choice, or come only for the Fix-a-test and get feedback on your progress over the winter.

Day 2: In addition, VADA/Nova will host a Volunteer Training Session in conjunction with the Fix-A-Test - learn to scribe and/or score tests in a relaxed environment.

Lisa Schmidt Lisa Schmidt is a United States Equestrian Federation licensed “R” dressage judge, FEI dressage competitor and trainer and has earned her USDF Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals. She has been accepted into the S judges program. Lisa has trained and shown several horses to the FEI level, including two to Grand Prix. She is currently showing Ihorn at Grand Prix, her Dutch Warmblood mare, Kareena at Intermediare and Tristin (out of Kareena by the Hanoverian stallion Supermax Macho) at Fourth Level. Lisa has been teaching dressage since 1994 and her students have been champions at USDF Regional Championships and BLM Championships.

Dressage riders of Appaloosas bred (foaled) in Virginia are eligible for cash awards in 2010!

Through the Virginia Horse Industry Board’s Virginia Bred Incentive program for 2010, various breeds were provided with funding to reward their Virginia bred horses in 2010. For the Appaloosa breed, there will be a

category for dressage and combined training where participants can vie for their share of $3000 in prize money. Details of the program will be posted at the following website in the near future: www.va4apps.com

You may also contact Kathy Coviello at 732-768-3302 or via email at [email protected].

So, if you or anyone you know is riding a Virginia bred Appaloosa in dressage this year, please look into this program so you can win cash awards. Other breeds who received funding from the Incentive Program have chosen to spend the funding in other areas, but we worked to ensure that dressage riders and eventers are rewarded for their competitive efforts. -Kathy Coviello

2009 Adequan/USDF National Symposium. By Donna Gatchell

In 2009 I was the lucky recipient of a scholarship from VADA/Nova to attend the USDF Convention in Austin, Texas.

Headlining the Symposium was Jan Brink, who is best known for his wonderful partnership with the Swedish Stallion Briar 899. I was very excited that not only was I going to experience the USDF Convention for the first time but that I was also going to be treated to a 2 day educational seminar with Jan teaching it.

As it turned out, my good friend and fellow trainer/instructor ,Candy Allen, was so excited for me that over lunch one day I convinced her to come with me. This worked out really well because we shared the hotel room and rental car and her wonderful husband Larry” (everyone knows him from the awards table at our shows!) found great airline tickets for us and booked our flight and rental car. So we were set. I had registered for the convention, (which you can do on-line very easily, USDF has it all figured out), we had our flight and rental car booked and the hotel, we were ready to go. On Wed. Dec 2nd we caught an early flight out to Dallals, Texas, rented a car and drove to Austin. We arrived at the hotel around lunch time, checked in and picked up our welcome package from USDF. The Renaissance Inn was super, close to the downtown area, with shopping and great restaurants (Cheesecake Factory!!) within walking distance. The rooms were great and the lobby was decorated with wonderful Christmas decorations so it was a very festive atmosphere. We made our way downstairs where USDF had set up their registration table, where we were given lots of goodies, samples of things, vendor catalogues, along with the schedule of events. We went back to our room and poured over the schedule of events, picking out what we most wanted to attend. There was everything you could possibly think of relating to our Dressage world…………a Freestyle Forum, ( Terry Ciotti Gallo, Sandy Howard, Anne Guptill,); Pyramid of Training Forum, ( Hilary Clayton and Jane Savoie); USDF Competition Managers/Secretaries Clinic, ( Fox Village); Finding Emotional Balance, ( Jane Savoie); Balanced Rider-Balanced Horse, ( Hilary Clayton). These are just a few of what was offered!! Wednesday evening was the Welcome party at Serrano’s, a Tex-Mex restaurant. We headed that way and met up with our now current VADA/Nova President Alison Head, Nicole DelGiorno ( 2009 Junior NAJYRA Gold Medalist) and her mother, and Lisa Schmidt ( a USEF Licensed R Judge). We were all going to go to the welcome party but it was so crowded we ended up at the Cheesecake Factory!!! We had such a great time of fellowship and food!! The next morning we got up early and made our way down stairs to the coffee and bagel shop that was in the hotel. We had delicious bagels and latte’s for breakfast and then proceeded to go to the various roundtable discussions and education seminars. One of the reasons I wanted to go to the convention was because there was an education session on “Volunteer Recruitment” and as I am the recruiter for VADA/Nova ,I was hoping to get some good ideas from this. It was a very educational seminar and it was fun to share ideas with each other on the various ways each GMO recruits and runs their respective volunteer programs. NEDA (New England Dressage Association) has a huge volunteer force; they have over 2000 members and actually have a Bronze, Silver, and Gold Pin award for their members, which are earned by how many volunteer hours are worked!! They also do a calendar each year taking pictures of riders/horses at the local shows and putting it together at the end of the year. On the flip side there were some GMO’s in the mid-west who have small memberships and were struggling to even get their volunteer program off the ground so we exchanged some ideas on how they could get going.. It was a really fun time to meet and talk to other people from other parts of the country and find out what they do in their programs and exchange ideas. One of the biggest things that is prevalent amongst everyone and a theme I hold dear to my heart is that volunteers must be appreciated and thanked and treated with respect!!

Thursday afternoon, we actually went shopping at the stores close by and had an early dinner as we wanted to get back for the evening panel discussion called “Fabulous Freestyles”. The freestyle panel was great. It was led by Terry Ciotti Gallo with Ann Guptill and Sandy Howard. It was a highly informative talk, about selecting music, designing your choreography and ways to maximize your score and avoiding movements at each level that would negatively affect your score. At the end we were treated to a couple of videos from Sandy Howard of some freestyles she had put together, a really fun and informative evening. Friday morning Jan was working with the demo riders and the sessions were closed to the public except for USDF Certified Instructors and judges, so we were allowed to attend the sessions. This part of the convention was held at the Travis Center which was about a 20 minute car ride away from the hotel. USDF did actually provide a shuttle bus for the attendees of the convention, but we had a rental car so we drove. It was unusually cold at that time of year so when we got there we were all quite cold until the heating came on. Jan worked with each one of the rid-ers, evaluating them and deciding what each focus of each lesson would be for the next two days. He did ride a few of the horses, which was lovely to see as he is a beautiful rider. The Title of the Symposium was “ Communication: A two way system of Understanding” and Jan set out and accomplished this with every horse and rider. He talked a lot about “Zones” and that with each horse and rider he started in the comfort zone, warming the horse up in all 3 gaits. He then went on to what he called the “stretching zone” ( not stretching down, do not think stretchy chewy!!) He means this is the zone which is challenging, where learning takes place. The final zone is the “panic zone” where we do not want to go as this is where there is too much pressure and the horse panics and learning stops. He empha-sized always returning to the comfort zone to give both horse and rider a break. There was a good selection of demo riders from a young 6 yr old PRE stallion to the FEI schoolmaster and all the riders did a fantastic job. Saturday and Sunday was spent back at the Travis Center, watching Jan work his magic with the horses and riders. We were shown many exercises ranging from gaining control of your horse’s strides on a 15 or 20 meter circle, to simple changes, tempi changes and pirouette work to name but a few!! Jan was very positive and easy to understand, funny and articulate, and he made the riders feel good about what they were doing. It was a really fun and educational experience, and I know that Candy and I would jump at the chance to ride with him if he were ever to come to this area!! We also visited the wonderful vendors and spent way too much money, but picked up some great bargains so well worth it!! Saturday evening Jan gave a talk back at the hotel. He talked about his life journey, that he was a hockey player in high school and later discovered a talent with horses. At 16 he did a 3 year stint at Flyinge, the Swedish National Stud which is where he met Kyra Kyrklund, his mentor and primary trainer to this day. He started his own business with a partner at the young age of 19, “Tullstorp Dressage Stable” where he focused on the standing and training of stallions, along with sales. Jan was able to buy out his partner eventually and now runs the business by himself. It is home to his three-time Olympic partner, Briar 899, who is now retired. He ended the evening by showing a video of himself working at “Tullstorp” with Briar doing his day to day routine leading up to one of his shows. It was truly an amazing video, and I think there were a lot of people who were very moved by it- I certainly was. It was a great evening for everyone!! Sunday brought the convention to a close and we started our journey back to Washington. We talked non-stop all the way home about how we were going to go home and try certain exercises we had learned from Jan on our own horses. I would like to thank VADA/Nova for the scholarship; it was so worth it- I had a wonderful and educational experience. USDF did a fabulous job of putting the convention together, Jan Brink was wonderful, but also the other workshops and seminars were so educational. I would encourage anyone if they had the opportunity to attend to definitely go. It is great to see the inner workings of USDF, to attend the forums, meet other members from other GMO’S, share idea’s, learn new things, and have a really great time!! Thank you VADA /Nova!!

Minutes from the VADA Board Meeting March 7, 2010

Charlottesville, VA

Board members present: Jane Palmer- ShenVADA, Tracey Smith-Oliver- SWAVDA, Judith Harroun-Lord- ShenVADA,

Robyn Nunnally- SVDA, Jessie Ginsburg- NOVA, Beth Rippel-SVDA, Sharon Ackley- VADAF, Alison Douglas-Central, Catherine Kern-Charlottesville, Carter Bass-Charlottesville, Shelli King- NOVA, Tammy Hryczaniuk- Fredericksburg, Alison Head-NOVA. Other members present: Vicky Germroth- ShenVADA, Melyni Worth-Charlottesville, Sandy Johnson-SVDA, Anita Scruggs-ShenVADA, Nancy Lowey-Charlottesville, and Sherrie Booye-Charlottesville. No representatives from NEVADA were present. In the interest of time, minutes from the last meeting were not read, but Alison clarified that the Charlottesville Twin Shows mentioned in the last minutes have nothing to do with the Fredericksburg Chapter. Some members had mentioned confusion from past events using the same “Twin” name. Elections were held and the board from last year was re-elected- Bettina Longaker- President, Beth Rippel- Vice-President, Jessie Ginsburg- Treasurer, and Alison Douglas- Secretary. There was discussion regarding the Adult Team Show embedded with the Charlottesville Twin Shows and how expenses would be divided. It was decided that as the show dates got closer and entries for each received, it would be reviewed again. Information regarding the Adult Team will be sent to each GMO along with sponsorship forms in hopes to generate interest and funds. The insurance requirements for the facility were mentioned and members of Charlottesville and the VADA board will ensure that both clubs are covered adequately. The board voted on the date for the 2011 clinic. The dates available were April 2nd and 3rd for Morven and March 26th and 27th for Lexington. After discussing that the Lexington date conflicted with Williamston and we had no commitment from a chapter to help organize and staff the clinic if we had it in Lexington, the April dates in Morven were chosen. The Purple Books have been mailed and extra copies were given to Chapter reps present for distribution to new members. Ad revenue was down this year and as a result the cost per book was $5.94. As $6.00 is what VADA receives per member, further discussion will be held at a later board meeting. Treasurer’s report- Jessie reported that the combined balances in our accounts was $114,338.22. Members spoke of Courtney King-Dye’s injury and tabled discussion for a future meeting regard-ing our position on mandatory helmet usage. The next board meeting will be held on Sunday, April 18th. The location of the meeting has not been finalized. Meeting was adjourned at 11:30 a.m. Respectfully submitted, Alison Douglas
