ABSTRACT

Kampung Baru Kampung Pahang is located at Perak state 2 km from Tapah town and

12 km from Bidor town. The village is in Batang Padang district and under Majlis

Daerah Tapah authority. From the Tapah exit of PLUS Highway, turn left and go

along the road for about 1 km. The village is at the left of the road. The population of

the village is decreasing because of out-migration of the younger generation. The

village has drainage problems which lead to floods. Although Kampung Baru

Kampung Pahang is a small village, it has the potential of being an ideal location for

homestay programs/ business.

HISTORY

Kampung Baru Kampung Pahang is a small village. According to the village

headman, this new village was established before 1950. It is named Kampung Baru

Kampung Pahang because it is near Pahang state. At the main junction of the village,

one road leads to Cameron Highlands and another road leads to Tapah. The border

between Perak state and Pahang state lies along the road to Cameron Highlands. The

village is close to the PLUS Highway Exit for Tapah. From the Tapah exit of PLUS

Highway, turn left and go along the road for about 1 km to reach the village.

INFRASTRUCTURE

There is no Police station or hospital in this new village which is very close to

Tapah town and its facilities. Nevertheless, the village has a play ground, park, bus

stop and “dewan orang ramai”.

POPULATION AND HOUSING

According to the headman of the village, the village now consists of around

30 household. The Chinese population is decreasing while the Indian population is

increasing. Most of the younger generation move out to the city and this has lead to a

declining and aging population.

Land tenure type in Kampung Baru Kampung Pahang is 60 years lease. The

villagers live in detached houses, most of which are timber and brick structures.

Houses in the village are generally in satisfactory condition.

ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES

Most of the villagers are elderly people and retirees. The majority of the

younger generation have moved to big cities, especially Singapore. However, there

are some who work in Tapah town which is close to the village. There are grocery

shops and food stalls at the village. One of the food stalls is run by the headman of

the village. The shops in the village are special because the business is conducted on

the ground floor while the family lives upstairs. The grocery shop operates from 8am

to 5pm, whereas food stalls are open from 7am to 2pm. The stalls sell delicious food

such as “curry mee” and “chee cheong fun”.

EDUCATION

There is only a primary school in the village which is SJK (C) Kg. Pahang.

Originally, the school building was made of wood. About 10 years ago, this was

replaced with a new brick building. At its peak, the school held two sessions of

classes: morning and afternoon classes to cater for all the students. However,

according to the headman of the village, the primary school is now left with only 11

teachers and 40 students.

There is no secondary school at the village. Secondary school students from

village travel to Tapah’s secondary school which is 2km from the village. These

students go to school by school bus or public bus.

SOCIAL, CULTURAL AND RELIGIOUS PRACTICE

The Chinese villagers can speak Mandarin, Hakka, Cantonese although

Cantonese is the most widely used dialect.

Most villagers of Kampung Baru Kampung Pahang are Buddhists. However,

there are a few villagers who are Hindus, Muslims and Christians. There is a “Datuk

Temple” in the village. It is located to the left of SJK (C) Kg. Pahang. Buddhists in

the village worship at this temple. Indian villagers who are mainly Hindus gather at

the Hindu temple during festivals.

The villagers in Kampung Baru Kampung Pahang are very nice and friendly.

They know each other very well and not race discrimination. They help each other

regardless race. There was such harmony village which matches to “Satu Malaysia”

concept. The villages will organize “gotong-royong” annually which around Chinese

New Year. Every Villager will contribute their effort on the event in order to keep the

village clean. Besides, they will celebrate festival together.

PROBLEMS

The main problem faced by the village is flooding. According to the headman

of the village, the floods happen at least once a year. The flood cause traffic woes

and the villagers suffer losses and inconvenience. The primary school has to shut

down for a few days each time the village is flooded.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

The homestay business is an entrepreneurship opportunity open villagers. Kampung

Baru Kampung Pahang is located within an hour’s drive from several tourist destinations

such as Sungkai and Lata Kinjang Water Fall. The villagers can bring homestay guests to

these tourist attractions. At the same time, these visitors can also enjoy and appreciate the

lifestyle in the new village.
