For large monoblock rotor shaft forging, the detectability of indications by Conventional UT cannot always satisfy the requirement due to the long beam path. In addition it takes much time to conduct the inspection in accordance with some inspection specifications such as the VGB standard, which requires several angle beam methods in addition to the straight beam method. The characteristics of Phased Array UT technique, namely, zone focusing and sector scan are effective to solve the above problems. Investigations regarding the optimal testing conditions of Phased Array UT were performed and we have established the internal quality evaluation technique for large monoblock rotor shaft forging by Phased Array UT technique with an automated UT system. As a result, the detectability of indications and efficiency of inspection have been improved compared with Conventional UT, and we have confirmed that large monoblock rotor shaft forging can be inspected more reliably and accurately by this evaluation technique.
