    EXECUTIVESUMMARY

What does it mean to G o Green? Does it mean that we are

overwhelmingly wealthy? Does it mea n that we a re physica lly so ill

that we turn green or, as is the case of Bruce Banner, we are so angry

that we enrage our inner Hulk? According to the website Save the

World the term going green refers to using various everyday

methods to help save the world and its environment. ("Save The

World"). C urrently going green is a choice a nd it is by that choice that

the University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus is c ommitted to

environmental stewardship and sustainability. As one of the universitys

six core strategic goals, environmental stewardship helps frame our

    ob jec tives ("Go Green").

The St. Pe tersburg campus has lead the Go Green initiative by

receiving the first Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED)

C ertified Gold building in the USF System, o ffering environmentally

friendly computing, offering priority parking for low-emission vehicles,

planting native trees and plants yearly, and instituting a green energy

fund ("Go G reen"). It is by these pa rtnerships and programs that the

University of South Florida 's stra tegic goal of c rea ting a sustainable

    campus environment is shaped.

    SUSTAINABILITY ATUSFST.PETERSBURG CAMPUS

Sustainability a t the St. Petersburg c ampus is in full swing. By enac ting

the Student G reen Energy Fund the c ampus is able to c ollec t fees from

student tuition and turn it into an environmentally friendly solution on

campus ("Student Green Energy Fund"). Prior to this fund being in

plac e the university had alrea dy received the first LEED Certified Gold

building in the USF System ("Go Green") and has signed the American

C ollege a nd University Presidents C limate C ommitment, committing

the university to ma king a c limate ac tion p lan to help further the goal

of reduc ing greenhouse ga s emissions (Timeline Photos). Not only is

the University of South Florida St. Petersburg c ampus helping theenvironment but it is also helping the faculty, staff, and even the

general public keep a little cash in their poc kets (Rabago , L.). The C ar

Sharing Program is an affordable alternative way of transportation for

students in need of a renta l car. The program is in conjunc tion with

Enterprise Rent-A-C ar. Ac cording to the Enterprise website Its a c ar

sharing program in your c ommunity that allows you to reserve a car by

the hour for one, a ll-inc lusive pric e. Unlike traditiona l renta l, you only

have to be 21 yea rs old to share in your community. (Enterprise

    CarShare).

    GREEN ENERGY FUND

The Student Green Energy Fund, a student-led campaign was passed

by a seventy two percent approval in 2011 ("Student Green Energy

Fund Bylaws"). The Student Green Energy Fund is financ ed through anominal student fee o f $1.00 per c redit hour. The fund is used to a ssist

USF St. Petersburg in reducing energy costs through conserving power

generation using clean, renewable energy technologies, and lowering

greenhouse ga s emissions ("Student Green Energy Fund").

Approximately $300,000 is expected to be accrued for renewable

energy and efficiency projects on campus over the course of three

    years ("Go Green").

The mission as it is posted to the soc ial media site Facebook is To

establish or improve the use of renewable energy technologies or

energy e ffic ienc ies that direc tly red uce the universities and/ or cost

based on the proposals of students, faculty, and staff (About - USF

St. Petersburg, Student Green Energy Fund). The proc ess is

straightforward, if a student, faculty or staff member have a green

idea they generate a proposal for review, after it is reviewed the idea

is presented to the Student G reen Energy Fund c ommittee . If the ideais approved by the committee the next step is getting the approval of

the Chancellor. If approved by the Chancellor, the project then gets

implemented ("University of South Florida St. Petersburg").

To date the Student Green Energy Fund has fina nc ed and completed

    the following projec ts:

    - Fitness center equipment- Solar powered charging stations- A hybrid truck purchase- LED parking garage lighting- Filtered wa ter stationsFITNESSCENTER EQUIPMENT

generate energy, putting it back on the grid, decreasing the gyms

energy use. ("USF St. Petersburg, Student Green Energy Fund").

    RAC E FOR THEWATTS

To promote the use o f the USF St. Petersburg Fitness C enter

Cardio Lofts equipment student organizations competed in

Rac e fo r the Wa tts. From February 27th to March 1st of 2013,

teams generated over 1400 watts on the green gym equipment

("USF St. Petersburg, Student Green Energy Fund").

Ac cording to Mike Leggett in a Facebook post the winning team

gets more than just bragging rights and a sense of self

accomplishment, the team that generates the most watts and

the team who generates the greatest distance will have a plaque

hung in the gym in their teams honor ("USF St. Petersburg, Student

    Green Energy Fund").

    SOLARPOWERED CHARGING STATIONS

University of South Florida and the

    University of South Florida St.

Petersburg are the first universities in

the Bay area to get solar-powered

power stations. These solar doks are

installed by the Harbor, behindC oq uina Hall and the Library. The

purpose of the stations is to quickly

    charge electronic devices without

being tethered to a wall socket ("Solar("Solar power stations come to USF St.

    Petersburg")

    HYBRIDTRUCK

The student green energy fund orga nization ha s also raised funds

that went towards the purchase of a Silverado Hybrid Truck

purchased for Waterfront Adventure Trips and Sailing Regattas. The

    battery operated

    truck will

    significantly

    reduce gasoline

    expenses and

    emissions on

    waterfront trips and

    sailing team

    regattas.

    (Timeline Photos).

    LEDPARKING GARAGELIGHTING

    Money raised by the SGEF

    also went towards funding

    the LED daylight and motion

ac tivated pa rking lights on

the first floor of the parking

    garage. This installation

    equates to a seventy

    percent less energy usage

    FILTERED WATER STATIONS

The filtered water stations on the USF St. Pe tersburg campus provide

a rapid fill of water to quench thirst and reduce plastic bo ttle wa ste

in the environment. This installation equates to an estimated C O2

red uc tion/1500 bottles: 1122.66lbs (Leggett).

    LEEDSTRUCTURE(S)

The student green energy fund is not the only way that the University o f

St. Petersburg is going green. This campus is now home to University

of South Floridas first Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design

(LEED) certified struc ture with its new Sc ience and Technology building

(WUSF). This building earned gold level certification from the LEED

program. WUSF quoted J ohn Pehling stating The outside of this

particular building is made of concrete, which is a renewable

resource, or in other words another way the university is going green.

    J ohn Pehling

    wasnt the

    only one who

    had to say

    something

    about USFs

    new green

    initia tives, Dr.

    J udy

    Genshaft,

    president of

USF, said, It is important for our environment and its important for

sustainability. All the other buildings we will be building will be very

cognizant of the LEED and sustainability (WUSF) which further shows

    step towards Going G reen..

    CLIMATECOMMITMENT

Does it all stop there? No, in fac t USF St. Petersburg has signed the

American College and University Presidents C limate Commitment.

Universities that sign the c ommitment are p ledging to c omplete an

emissions inventory; within two years, set a target date and interim

milestones for becoming climate: take immediate steps to reduce

    greenhouse gas emissions by choosing from a list of short term ac tions;

integrate sustainability into the curriculum and make it part of the

educational experience; and make the action plan, inventory and

progress reports public ly available, a cc ording to the informational

    website for the commitment, presidentsclimatecommitment.org.

(USFSP should sign commitment to go green: Guidelines for making

campus more eco-friendly could push the university.).

    CAR SHARING PROGRAM

Yet a nother wa y USF St. Petersburg is helping the environment by going

green, is by adapting a car-sharing program, the first in Pinellas

    County. What

    this will do is

    offer students

    an affordable

    alternative

    mode of

    transportation.

This program is not only for students, it's a lso ava ilable for faculty and

will be available to the general public by the end of this month.

    (Raba go, L.)

Not only will this program help the environment, it will also help

peoples pockets! The price of gas is always climbing higher and

higher, so by offering a car-sharing program people no longer have to

spend their money on gas or maintenance for their cars.

    CONCLUSION

The University of South Florida St. Pe tersburg ha s made a tremendous

contribution to the G oing G reen efforts through various projec ts and

initiatives. The evidence can be seen in various forms around the

campus, espec ially with the first LEED building. The University of South

Florida St. Petersburg has paved the way for a more sustainable

campus, and has provided the resources to its students to enhance the

objectives of Going Green. We now know the importance of

environmental sustainability and the impac t it has on our planet. So

what are you doing to reduce YOUR Hoofprint?
