SOUTH CAROLINABROKE one first-gamejinx at the College

World Series but could notovercome another in a bi-zarre opening game thatspanned more than ninehours and a couple of raindelays.

Bottom line: USCschances of winning theCollege World Series werereduced to slim followingSundays 4-3 loss toOklahoma.

Christian Walker tookcare of USCs strange-but-true inability to score in theopening game of the CWSwhen he blasted a toweringhome run to lead off thesecond inning. It markedthe first run scored by theGamecocks in a World Se-ries opener since 1982, aspan covering 46 innings.

But, unfortunately, USCfinds itself with one handtied behind its back becauseit failed to win its openinggame of the College WorldSeries for the seventh con-

secutive appearance.Of course, winning theopening game is not neces-sary to capturing the na-tional championship, but itmakes for an easier path tothe title. Fighting out of thelosers bracket is taxing ona pitching staff, particularlyone that is not deep in start-ers such as USC.

USC will send Sam Dy-son to the mound in Tues-days game against theloser of the game betweenClemson and top-seededArizona State. After Dyson,USC has not established aNo. 3 starting pitcher. Itcould be any one of a num-ber of players, but none

who has proved himself inthat role.

Thats never a good signfor any team that needs towin four games over thenext six days just to reach

    the best-of-three champi-onship series.

Since the College WorldSeries went to the two-bracket format in 1988, twoteams have lost the openinggame and come back to winthe title: Southern Califor-nia in 1998 and OregonState in 2006.

USC has attempted to doit the hard way in each ofits previous six CollegeWorld Series appearances. The Gamecocks lost theopener in 2002 and man-aged to reach the champi-onship game, in which theylost to Texas. USC also lostthe opener in 2004 and

reached the bracket finalbefore losing to CalState-Fullerton.

Interestingly, an opening-round win sparked USC tothe title game in its first two

CWS showings: The Game-cocks lost to Texas for the1975 title and to ArizonaState for the 1977 title.

But that was not to beSunday. The games startwas delayed by rain for fourhours and 15 minutes. Thenit was halted in the middleof the sixth inning for twohours and one minute.

Before the second delay,a couple of seasonlongbugaboos haunted USC asit fell behind 3-2.

The Gamecocks have notbeen a great base-runningteam all season. The fastestplayer on the team, AdamMatthews, has five stolen

bases on only seven at-tempts. The two next-fast-est, Whit Merrifield andJackie Bradley, led the teamwith 12 and seven stolenbases, respectively.

While Bradley did exe-cute the hit-and-run perfect-ly to send Merrifield tothird base in the first in-ning, Bradley negated theoutstanding play with abase-running gaff. He waspicked off first base withAdrian Morales at bat whena pitch skipped away fromOklahoma catcher TylerOgle, who retrieved the balland fired to first.

When Morales struck outto end the inning, USC sawa promising start aborted.

In the second inning,Christian Walker led offwith a towering home run,and Brady Thomas followed

with a single to right field. But Thomas was wiped offthe bases when Kyle Endersmissed a hit-and-run signand the slow-footed Thom-as was easily thrown out at

    second base.Additionally, USCs home

run power has been virtu-ally restricted to gamesplayed at Carolina Stadium.Entering the College WorldSeries, 69 of USCs 80home runs were hit in itshome park.

Walker connected in thesecond inning and Bradleydrove a pitch deep over theright-field wall in the fourthinning. Had this game beenplayed at Carolina Stadium,USC would have had fourmore runs on another threehome runs in the earlyinnings.

    It was a familiar ending

for USC in the openinground of the College WorldSeries, one that puts theGamecocks behind theeight ball in their quest fora national championship.

    college world series | game 2 | USC 11, Arizona State 4

    OMAHA, Neb.

After watching his teamstruggle to deliver aclutch hit in its College

World Series opening loss,USC coach Ray Tanner washappier than anyone to seethe snowman the Gamecockshung on the Rosenblatt Stadi-um scoreboard in the secondinning of Tuesdays game.

The eight-run outburstpropelled USC to an 11-4

victory against Arizona Statein an elimination game.

    That second inning for us,

eight runs, eight hits, is themost weve had in one inningthe entire season, Tannersaid. We dont score runslike that very often. But wehad some big, big at-bats inthat inning, and it gave us anopportunity against a greatclub.

USC (49-16) advances toplay the loser of Tuesdaynights Clemson-Oklahomagame at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Arizona State (52-10), the No.1 seed, ends its season withconsecutive losses the onlytime they lost two in a rowthis year.

Obviously, you cant havea start like we did against aquality team of South Caroli-na, Arizona State coach TimEsmay said. I thought theydid a heck of a job of puttingus on our heels, and I think

you have to do that in a gamelike this where you lose and

    you go home.USC outfielders Jackie

Bradley and Whit Merrifieldled the 14-hit attack withthree hits and one homerapiece. Bradley, who drove infour runs, hit a three-run shotin the second to key the biginning. Merrifield added apair of RBIs, including a solohomer in the eighth inning. The two are tied for the teamlead with 13 homers each.

If your guys up there atthe top are having that kindof offensive day, youre going

to have a chance to win thegame, and that ended upbeing big for us, Tannersaid.

Junior right-hander SamDyson took advantage of the

support to hold the Sun Dev-ils in check for 7 13 innings.

He allowed four runs on eighthits with two walks. MattPrice pitched the final 1 23innings.

Sam was good today,Tanner said. He might nothave been really sharp withhis slider and his curveball, but his fastball was prettygood, and he was getting hischangeup in there. And whenthey did get some runners on,

we made plays and stayedout of the big inning.

Tanner may have beenmost satisfied with the wayhis team bounced back froma 4-3 loss to Oklahoma onSunday, when the Game-cocks left the bases loaded inthe eighth and ninth innings. That day was made more

difficult by rain delays cover-ing about six hours.

You get a new day, youbounce back, and you try to

win the next one, Tannersaid. Thats kind of what we

did today. Certainly thateight-run inning propelled usto a good position, but theseguys are mature. We havesome young guys on the field, but theres some maturity, and they respect the game. They know its difficult andits going to bite you some-times. We had a hard timescoring the other night. But

we got some runs today, andthat kind of evens out in thisgame.

Adrian Morales and KyleEnders led off the secondinning with singles, and Scott

Wingo delivered a two-rundouble into the left-field cor-ner. Evan Marzilli followed

with a single, then Whit Mer-rifields blooper over the firstbasemans head scored an-other run. Bradley then

drilled a three-run homer toleft-center that increased thelead to 6-0.

I was just actually lookingto drive him in, get a sac flysomewhere, Bradley said.

And he (ASU starter MerrillKelly) made a great pitch. It

was low and outside. I justhappened to stay back on it,put a good swing on it.

    Esmay was impressed withBradley.

Hes aggressive. He at-tacks the baseball, and hesone of the better players

weve played against, Esmaysaid. Hes performing at ahigh level right now.

One out after Bradleyshomer, Brady Thomas re-started the rally with a singleand scored on a two-runhomer off the left-field foulpole by Morales to end theday of Kelly (10-3), who al-lowed eight runs on 10 hits.

Its always big to give runsupport to our pitchers,Morales said. Coach Tanner

tells us well never win 3-2.Were going to have to battle, and some games will be 9-8.

And it was good to give ussome run support early, andthen Sam just rolled right

    through them.Dyson (6-5), who picked

up his first win since May 15against Arkansas, said thebig lead allowed him to beaggressive.

Its a lot easier when youhave eight runs on theboard, he said. Its a weightoff your back.

The Gamecocks added tworuns in the third on a bases-loaded hit batsman and walkto boost the lead to 10-0.

Arizona State mustered tworuns in each of the fifth andeighth innings.

They tried to make it a biginning a number of times, and we were able to get somepitches or a play to stay outof it, Tanner said. ArizonaState has a tremendous club, and I knew that you were

going to have to get 27 hardouts. Thats what it ended upbeing.

But in the end, USCseight-run uprising proved tobe the difference.

    college world series | game 3 | USC 3, Oklahoma 2 (12)

    OMAHA, Neb.

South Carolinas mag-ical season reachedanother day late

Thursday evening whenthis group of never-say-dieGamecocks once againwould not die.

Brady Thomas deliveredthe winning blow, a groundsingle to center field thatscored Jackie Bradley fromsecond base without athrow from the Oklahomaoutfield. It capped a two-run, two-out rally that sentUSC to a 3-2 victory.

It was an incredible winfor us, said USC coachRay Tanner. It was a nev-er-give-up day.

Now comes the fun part .. . a game against Clemsontonight in the losersbracket final. If that storyline sounds familiar, well, itshould. Turn the calendar

back to 2002 and tonightsshowdown is identical.Clemson was one win

from reaching the CollegeWorld Series championshipgame eight years ago, onlyto see USC pound the Ti-gers 12-4 and 10-2. Againthis time, USC needs twowins to capture the bracketand play the best-of-threeseries for the nationalchampionship.

As if the USC-Clemsonrivalry needed any morefodder for bragging rights.Clemson won the regular-season series by blastingUSC 19-6 in the earlyMarch deciding game atCarolina Stadium.

That outcome and theseason series will be longsince forgotten if USC canrepeat its 2002 rallyagainst Clemson. Ofcourse, that 2002 USC

team did not need the kindof dramatics provided bythe Gamecocks onThursday.

Thomas did not waituntil USC was down to itsfinal strike to deliver hisgame-winning blow. Hesmacked the first pitchfrom Oklahoma relieverRyan Duke through thebox and Bradley cruisedaround third base and into

the arms of on-rushingteammates at home plate.

Bradleys at-bat mo-ments before set the stageand proved to be just asheroic. USC trailed 2-1

when he fouled a 2-1 fast-ball back to the screenbehind home plate withtwo outs. Robert Bearystood on second base rep-resenting the tying runafter he singled and stolesecond.

Bradley and USC weredown to its last strike andstared elimination squarein the face. Bradley thenwatched a fastball inside

for ball three. Then hegrounded a single to rightfield and Beary raced infrom second, scoring easilywith an unnecessary slide.

    Then Jeffrey Jones

stepped to the plate andworked a walk withoutfacing a second strike.Almost as quickly as Brad-ley touched second baseand Jones stepped off first,Thomas roped one of themost glorious singles inUSC history.

It has to be the mostdramatic game-winning hitfor USC since the openinggame of the 1977 College

World Series when ChuckMcLean raced around thebases with an inside-the-park home run in the bot-tom of the 10th inning tobeat Baylor, 3-2.

Afterward, Tanner talkedabout 12-year-old CharliePeters of Omaha, a friendof the USC team since its2003 appearance in theCollege World Series. Pe-ters was a patient then atChildrens Hospital andMedical Center, but now isrecovered and has becomeUSCs biggest fan inOmaha.

He carried a sign at Ro-

senblatt Stadium Thursdaythat read: Never Give Upand Battle Hard.

USC took his sign toheart and has lived anotherday in Omaha.

JOIN THE CLUB, MichaelRoth. In fact, lets make

you the president ofSouth Carolinas fast-grow-ing hero-of-the-day elite.

Roth stepped out of hisrole as a left-handed special-ist in the bullpen to pitch thegame of his life Friday nightat Rosenblatt Stadium, one

that extended USCs life foranother day at the College

World Series. And this is not even what

Roth likes to do.I love hitting, Roth said

minutes after his complete-game gem in USCs 5-1vic-tory against Clemson. Pitch-ings not really my thing.

Roth allowed Clemson adouble by Richie Shaffer thateventually led to Clemsonsonly run in the third inning,a ground single to left bySpencer Kieboom in theeighth inning and a groundsingle to right by Brad Millerin the ninth.

That was it. Three hits. One walk, four strikeouts.

His performance immedi-ately inducted Roth into theannals of Gamecocks historyand, at the same time, pushed him into a group ofUSCs NCAA tournamentheroes this season that in-cludes Blake Cooper, JackieBradley, Adrian Morales,

Jose Mata, Matt Price, Chris-tian Walker, Sam Dyson andBrady Thomas.

This from a kid who wasrecruited to USC out of Riv-erside High in Greer as ahitter. Not until he threw fourscoreless innings of relief ina 9-5 loss at Florida in 2009did Roth become a full-timepitcher.

Heck, not until USCburned Cooper in its winagainst Oklahoma on Thurs-day was Roth even a consid-eration as a starter on Friday. Then pitching coach MarkCalvi made his case for Roth

in a meeting late Thursdaywith coach Ray Tanner.

Coach Calvi was con-vinced, Tanner said. Hewas his first choice afteryesterday. He said, I feelgood about what he can giveus. and the reasons why, andI agreed with him.

Then, as Roth stepped offthe elevator Friday afternoonat the Embassy Suites indowntown Omaha, Tannergreeted him.

What can you give us?Roth recalled Tanner asking.

    Ill throw until my arm

falls off, Roth replied. What is that, about one

    inning?Well see.

We saw, indeed.Roth said he could remem-

ber throwing completegames in high school, butthose were seven-inninggames. He can never recallthrowing nine innings. Yetthe left-hander was magnif-icent. He never overpoweredClemsons bats, but he waseffective enough to get 16groundball outs.

He was throwing a lot ofstrikes with fastballs, chan-geups and sliders away, catcher Kyle Enders said.He did a good job of keep-ing them off balance allnight.

He didnt really struggleall night. Hes not used tothrowing that many pitches,so he might have gotten alittle tired. But he stuck inthere and hung in there for

    us.Inning by inning, Roth

went about a ritual on themound before he threw hisfirst pitch. He stood off therubber, held his cap to hisside, bowed his head andtalked to himself.

The only time Roth ap-peared to be tiring was in thefifth inning when his pitchesbegan to sail outside. Butafter a quick trip to themound by Calvi, Roth quick-ly retired Spencer Kieboomon a fly ball to end the inningand sat down the next seven

Clemson batters. When he struck out John

Hinson to end the game,Roth was mobbed by histeammates near the mound. Then he conducted national

TV and radio interviewsbefore heading to the mediaroom to face reporters.

In looking over the finalboxscore from the game, heraised his eyebrows butnot in admiration of hisnights work. Rather, Roth

wanted to know what BFmeant on the statistics sheet.

Why would a near-4.0student majoring in businessknow anything about bat-ters faced. This guy wantsto be a hitter. When asked onthe field afterward if Fridaysshowing assures him of

being a pitcher at USC, Rothlaughed.

I hope not, he said. Idont want to be. That wasfun, but its not where I wantto be. I want to hit.

Maybe Tanner can call onRoth to hit tonight againstClemson, and do not besurprised if his hitting prow-ess makes him USCs hero ofthe day, again.

    college world series | game 5 | USC 4, Clemson 3

    OMAHA, Neb

No sweeter words haveever carried fromOmaha to Columbia

than these: South Carolinawill play for college base-balls national championshipthis week at the College

    World Series.When Christian Walker

stepped on first base at 9:13p.m. at Rosenblatt Stadiumfor the final out of USCs 4-3

victory against Clemson, theGamecocks were headed torarified air.

It feels great, USC catch-er Kyle Enders said. To bestanding here in Omaha andknowing were going to beplaying for the nationalchampionship on Monday, ithasnt really set in. I cantreally believe it yet. But wedid it.

USC faces a tall task in thebest-of-three series for thetitle on Monday againstUCLA. No taller, though, than what it stared at afterlosing in the opening roundSunday before battling backto win four games.

    The final two victories

came against Clemson in arepeat of 2002 when USCfought out of the losersbracket to defeat the Tigerstwice before losing the na-tional title game to Texas.

This will be USCs fourthcrack at a national title inbaseball. Besides the 2002loss, USC fell to Texas forthe title in 1975 and to Arizo-na State in 1977. It is difficultto imagine any of those USCteams having as many con-tributors as this Gamecocksclub.

For most of the postseason through the regional, theSuper Regional and into theCWS USC has been pass-ing the baton from game to

    game, from one hero toanother.

On Saturday, USC decidedto team up against a peskyClemson team that made itinteresting until the final out.

The Gamecocks receivedsignificant contributionsfrom pitchers Sam Dysonand Matt Price and clutchhitting from Christian Walk-er and Adrian Morales.

Lets start with the pitch-ing, since that has carriedUSC all season and partic-ularly in Omaha.

Coach Ray Tanner and hispitching coach, Mark Calvi, called on right-hander SamDyson to pitch despite Dysonhaving thrown 119 pitchesfour days ago in a victoryagainst Arizona State. Thistime, Dyson gutted his waythrough 112 pitches, limitingClemson to two runs on fivehits while walking two and

    striking out five in 623innings.

Then Tanner turned thegame over to Price, who wascoming back from one daysrest after a yeoman, three-

inning performance in USCs12-inning victory againstOklahoma. Price allowed arun in his 213-inning stint but

was as sharp as ever in strik-ing out three Clemsonbatters.

I was impressed withwhat Sam and Matt did,Tanner said. Even if we hadbeen less fortunate to wintonight, what great perfor-mances and competitiveefforts. It doesnt get anybetter than that.

While Dyson and Priceheld Clemson in check, USC

waited for its bats to pro-duce. Walker was the first tostep to the fore, leading offthe fourth inning. He blasted

a 2-2 changeup from Clem-son pitcher Casey Harmandeep into the left-fieldbleachers.

Then, with the game tiedat 2 in the seventh inning

and runners on first andthird, Walker drilled a singleinto center. Before Walkercame to bat, Clemson in-tentionally walked JackieBradley.

I knew they were walkingJackie to get to me, Walkersaid. I felt like I had some-thing to prove there.

He did just that, and be-fore he could get settled atfirst, Morales smacked thenext pitch from Alex Freder-ick on the ground into right.Bradley, who had movedaround to third on Walkerssingle, walked home withUSCs fourth and decisiverun.

    When Price took care of

matters in the eighth andninth, USC celebratedaround the pitchers mound. But this celebration wasmuch like the one shortlyafter the Gamecocks won the

Columbia Regional. The winwas nice to savor for themoment and there were backslaps and smiles all around.

But this is not the kind ofteam that is satisfied with

winning a regional or a Su-per Regional, playing in theCollege World Series or evenadvancing to the nationalchampionship series. Thisteam has a fight to it. It bat-tles from behind. It scrapsfor runs. It hangs around. It

wins. This is the kind of team

we are. Were a resilientteam, outfielder Whit Merri-field said. Were a team thatdoesnt like to lose a lot.

    Weve done things the hard

way all year. So, maybe it is perfectly

OK that the championshipseries against UCLA seemslike a tall order for a USCteam seeking a national title.

    college world series | game 7 | USC 2, UCLA 1 (11)

    OMAHA, Neb.

TWO HUNDRED and ninetyteams began the collegebaseball season dreaming

of a national championship. Nowone stands alone atop the heap as

winners of the final College WorldSeries ever played at RosenblattStadium.

Read these words carefully, andlet them sink in because they havenever before been spoken in amajor sport: The University of

    South Carolina is the nationalchampion.

You try to be one of the bestone day, said USC coach RayTanner as he sported a nationalchampions T-shirt and stood nearhome plate moments after histeams dramatic, 2-1, 11-inning

victory against UCLA. Manytimes, its just a dream, but some-times it becomes reality.

The reality is that this nationalcrown was won not just for acoaching staff led by Tanner, whotook over a foundering program14 years ago and guided it Tues-day night to unprecedentedheights.

Its really indescribable, Tan-ner said. Ive never really been inthis position, so I dont know how

to act. Im so happy for this greatuniversity, its players and coachesand the fans who came out here

with us.This is a championship won not

just for the 35 players, who from

seldom-used Parker Bangs tosteady second baseman Scott

Wingo, never wavered in theirbelief that a national champi-onship could be realized.

Being our first national cham-pionship, this is definitely whereour university is headed, said

Wingo, who raced home fromthird base with the winning runon Whit Merrifields single. Were headed in the rightdirection.

It is a championship won for anentire athletics program, one thatfor most of its existence virtually

has been void of success on thenational level.

Maybe we can bury the chick-en curse, said Eric Hyman,USCs athletics director. Im sohappy for the Gamecock nation.Im so happy for our fans. Thisshows we can do it.

Finally, it is a championshipwon for the state of South Caroli-na, which so desperately longs tohave its name atop a national listfor something good.

Im so happy for the great stateof South Carolina, Tanner said.

So, as you drink your cup ofcoffee this morning, it is quite OKto puff your chest and carry yourhead high. Raise that cup in toastto a team that made its athleticsdepartment, its city and its stateproud.

This game tonight is the epito-me of what this team is all about,Tanner said.

In typical fashion, USC gotsterling pitching from starterMichael Roth and a quartet of

relievers, most notably Matt Price. The pitching staff has kept USC ingames throughout the postseason, often waiting around until theoffense could kick into gear.

On this night, USC waitedUCLA out until the 11th inning,

when Wingo led off with a walk, advanced to second base on apassed ball, then to third base onEvan Marzillis sacrifice bunt.

Merrifield then came to theplate and watched consecutivefastballs from UCLA reliever DanKlein that sailed high and awayfor balls. Merrifield lined the next

pitch into right field and Wingonearly scored the winning runbefore the ball fell on the Ro-senblatt grass.

I got into a hitters count andhe threw me a strike, Merrifieldsaid. I found a hole, and it was

just elation. I cant even describeit.

The big playmakers in Tues-days win will be remembered no doubt, forever as the ones

who led USC in the series-clinch-ing game. But they were only thelatest heroes and latest contrib-utors in a journey that beganinnocently enough with the startof the NCAA tournament on June4.

A two-run homer by JackieBradley and a three-run bomb by

Adrian Morales got USC going ina come-from-behind win againstBucknell. Then Blake Cooperoutdueled first-round pick Asher

Wojciechowski of The Citadel andJose Matas bullpen work led USCpast Virginia Tech to clinch the

    regional title.The Super Regional games

belonged to Price, who workedout of a no-out, bases-loaded jamin the opener, and Christian Walk-er, whose three-run homer withtwo outs in the bottom of theeighth inning sent USC to Omaha.

In Omaha, USC stubbed its toeout of the gate with a loss to Okla-homa. Then it got an outstandingperformance from right-handedpitcher Sam Dyson to defeat Ari-zona State; a ninth inning, two-out single by Bradley, who wasdown to his and USCs last strike,

to turn away Oklahoma; a brilliantthree-hitter from Roth, making hisfirst start of the season, to beatClemson; and yet another strongshowing by Dyson to defeat Clem-son and advance to the champi-onship round.

Once there, USC seized theopportunity like it never has in amajor sport. Cooper was at hiscareer-best in spinning a three-hitter over eight innings to defeatUCLA in the opener. Then Merri-field etched his name into theannals of USC athletics history

with his game-winning single. The traditional dogpile oc-

curred near second base, thenplayers paraded the nationalchampionship trophy around thestadium. Finally, the team gath-ered near home plate for the offi-cial presentation to USC of its firstnational championship in a majorsport.

It is a championship won forUSC, the city of Columbia and thestate of South Carolina.

    Tanner, USC owns the longest

    current streak of NCAA Re-

    gional appearances among the

    12 SEC schools with 11

    straight trips to the tourna-

ment dating back to the 2000season. In that span, Carolina

    has eight NCAA Super Re-

    gional appearances (2000,

    2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006,

    2007, 2010).

USC is one of only six

schools in the nation to make

    at least eight NCAA Super

Regionals in the last 11 years

and one of only eight schools

in the country to have reachedthe NCAA Regionals every

season from 2000 to the pre-

    sent. The programs 11-year

total record of 522-217 is the

    fourth highest win total

    among NCAA Division I

    schools. South Carolina has

    11 consecutive seasons of

    40 or more wins.

    The Gamecocks have also

    collected championships inthe Southeastern Conference

    with regular season titles in

    2000 and 2002 along with a

    SEC Tournament crown in

    2004. Tanners last 11 teams

    have featured 20 All-America

    performers including senior

    right-handed pitcher Blake

    Cooper.

    This past season was Tan-

ners 23rd year as a collegiatehead coach. At USC, Tanner

    has a .692 winning percentage

-- the second highest in SEC

    history. This past season,

    Tanner also reached a career

    milestone, recording his

    1,000th career victory, as he

    became the fourth fastest

    active coach to reach that

    total.
