Community Project
Community Project – This is massive
If you are not aware our students are embarking on a major project next term. We have asked 15-18
community members to work with us. Our students are going to be involved in telling significant stories
from their lives. Students will work in groups of three. They will complete a unit on interviewing under
the guidance of Donna Harper an ABC reporter. She will help develop interviewing skills in our
students. The second phase will be writing their major piece of work. We will be giving countless
examples of biographies and getting students to understand the complexities of what makes a good
biography. Finally students will be completing portraits and taking black and white photos of their sub-
jects. We are using a local photographer Katrina Cram and art teacher Cooper Wilson in this process.
The unit has already begun and will be really special.
So why are we doing this? After work earlier in the year with Erin Sciscone (USA Educational Consultant)
she has helped us understand having a purpose for our learning is important. We will be showcasing
student work at the conclusion of the project and therefore their learning has a real purpose. Students
know their learning matters and that will in term energise students to produce higher quality work.
Here is a snapshot of what we have done so far.
Meeting our community members –
Last Wednesday we met our community members. We have local people, new people to the area and
five residents from Greenhills Lodge Aged Care facility. Our students were required to introduce
themselves, start conversations with community members and ensure they felt welcome. It was an
amazing day.
Community Project Learning about Portraits
Last week we had Couper Wilson from the Murwillumbah High School come and work with our
students on drawing portraits. The students did some amazing work. We are focussing on high
quality work and the pieces of work they did in their first workshop was amazing.
Learning about Photography
On Friday last week our students worked with local photographer Katrina Cram. She came and gave a
presentation to the students on significant things they will need to know when taking photos of their
subjects. Students then went outside to begin work on taking photos.
Thanks so much for your work Katrina.
A huge step forward This week our school completed the final stages of upgrades for this
financial year. All classrooms have received new lino, sinks, a fresh
paint, soft felt to walls and 4/5/6 room got new carpet. These rooms
look amazing. Thanks to both the students and teachers for their pa-
tience during this time. A huge thanks goes to
Mr Dennerley and 4/5/6 who have been displaced out of their room
all term but have done it with a smile on their face. We are very
proud of these improvements with more planned in 2019/2020
financial year. Just as a side note we are still awaiting lino for the
front of our Admin building. This should be completed soon.
Small Schools Athletics Carnival—Week 1, Term 3 Next term our school will be involved in the Small Schools Athletics
Carnival. On Wednesday 24th July selected students will be
involved in the Field Events Carnival. Students will need to meet the
required distances in order to qualify for this carnival. Those students
involved will be notified via a note next week.
All students will be involved in the Athletics Carnival on Thursday 25th
July. We will get a bus to the grounds at Cudgen Oval. A note about
this day will also be sent out next week
No Staff Development /Pupil Free Day Term 3 As we had two Staff Development Days last term instead of one we
will be starting school back on the Monday 22nd July instead of the
Tuesday like most schools. We look forward to seeing students after
the holidays. It’s always interesting hearing about their
adventures and what they’ve been up to.
Reading for Life Each semester we set students a goal of reading for 50 nights over a
semester. Some students have absolutely smashed this reading over
100 nights. Those students who have reached this milestone will be
involved in a pizza and movie party next Wednesday.
125 Year Celebration A date for the 125 Year Celebration has been set for Sunday 26th October.
We are looking to have a variety of different stalls, some fun games and food
trucks. On this day we will be opening the time capsule which should be amazing.
Do you know someone who went to Burringbar Public School in the past?
Please spread the word.
Splendour in the Grass—Major Fundraiser
Last term raffle tickets were handed out to each family with the major prize being 2 Splendour in the
Grass tickets. All tickets are due back by the end of net week. The family who sells the most number
Growing Strong Minds As everyone knows the Growing Strong Minds Program is having a significant impact in our school. There are 24
character strengths that this program highlights. The program is based on positive psychology where we focus
with students on what their strengths are. When we do this it helps them to understand the things that make
them unique and special. This weeks’ focus is on Energy and Zest.
ENERGY / ZEST
The strength energy refers to having enthusiasm for life, committing 100% effort to everything and trying things with gusto.
WHAT TO SAY?
“I like how you applied lots of energy to that task.” “When is your energy strength helpful/not helpful?” “Your energy strength is really helpful when you play sport.” “ How could you show more energy/enthusiasm in your guitar lesson to-day?” (Look at the teacher, answer him in a loud voice with excitement)
“I know fairness/kindness is an important strength for you. Do you think you are being fair to your brother jumping around like that when he is trying to read? How could you dial back your energy?”
WHAT TO DO?
Exercise. Ride or walk to school if possible. Spend time in nature, this boost energy.
Learn relaxation strategies such as: - Belly (Diaphragmatic) Breathing. This is one of the most beneficial relaxa-tion strategies to learn. It stimulates the cortex, the part of the brain re-quired to feel calm and make logical rational decisions. See instructions be-low. - Mindfulness, try the free app Smiling Mind
SHADOW SIDE?
Energy can often be over or underused. It is important that it is used with the right intensity for the situation. This can be challenging for children, giv-en that their brain and ability to self-regulate is still forming. Sometime your enthusiasm will intimidate others and you will need to slow down to achieve the best results. Some people find those who are high in energy/zest to be overbearing and “in their face”. You need to be aware of personal space, giving others time to talk and allowing others time to come up with ideas or contributions.
Thank You CBA—Anna from the Commonwealth Bank,
Kingscliff dropped in to give the school $500 from their
community funds.
We appreciate the support!
