EDUCATION WEEK—3 -7 AUGUST

Education Week is here and this year it is a little different. During Education Week we take time to celebrate the

great work done in Public Schools across NSW.

Students on Monday viewed the official launch and saw a variety of different presentations by different schools

across the state.

On Tuesday we had a very engaging and interesting cultural experience where students visited different places and

were immersed in an introduction to Aboriginal languages. Our students virtually travelled to Western Plains Zoo

and learnt about a variety of different native animals. The stick insect and the green frogs were a real hit with K/1.

Students listened to some aboriginal dreamtime stories and listened to some Aboriginal music. The highlight for

many of our students was watching a man find witchetty grubs in a tree and talk about how they tasted.

Congratulations to the AECG on a fine presentation.

During classes this week our students viewed fifty artworks from 2019 HSC exam which were selected for the Art

Express Virtual 2020 exhibition. Students enjoyed viewing the different art works and rating their favourite piece

based on a set criteria.

This term our school is lucky to be offering the Super Me program in collaboration with the Family Centre

for students in Years 4/5/6.

The Family Centre is a non-profit community-based organisation established in 1988 providing a range of

services for children, young people and families that build and enhance relationships and parenting skills.

The program runs in a fun and inter-active style where we explore the groups’ ideas about themselves,

life and relationships.

Topics covered will include:

‘Using Power’ – Identifying different types of violence, exploring how power can be used positively and

negatively, exploring the idea of inclusion and exclusion, recognising their right to be safe at home and

school.

• Personal boundaries’ – Exploring the concept of personal boundaries and recognising when their own

boundaries have been crossed, communicating their feelings and needs clearly.

• ‘Things we can’t change’ – Explore situations they have no control over, understanding the process of

grief and loss, identifying healthy ways of dealing with stress and change.

• ‘Friends’ – Identifying types of conflict in friendships/class dynamics, exploring steps for resolving

conflict between friends/class mates.

• ‘Getting help, giving help’ – Identifying people they can trust and go to for support, exploring how

they can help a friend.

Enrolments for 2021

We are already starting to think about

enrolments for Kindergarten in 2021.

extra activities for our students to engage in. Here is an overview.

Monday – Students can play basketball with Mr Dennerley or work

in the garden with Mrs Gnech. We also have the foosball table out

and totem tennis for students to play.

Tuesday – Students get to work with Mrs Morton in Burringbar’s Got

Talent and in the school garden with Mrs Gnech and Mrs Cassin.

Wednesday – Students develop their acts with Mrs Morton and Miss

Sophy in Burringbar’s Got Talent.

Thursday – Students enjoy dance with Mrs Cross and we have board

games options with Mrs Davenport.

Friday – Students get to enjoy the foosball table and the totem

tennis out in the playground.

Playground update

In the last newsletter we shared the design of the new play

equipment. Thank you to all of our parents who came to meet with

Simon from Austek Play Equipment to share your ideas and give

your feedback. We are very excited about the new playground

equipment and are looking to sign contracts very soon. Thanks to

Nina who has been able to help us engage some local tradesmen

which will help reduce the cost of the project.

Music with Chris , SRE and School Banking

Chris started back this week with music and his students were very

keen and excited. If you would like to have your child participate in

music then there is still time. Please contact the school if you would

like to be involved in this program. The cost is $50 per term.

I spoke with our SRE providers this week. Even though we did

announce that scripture would be starting up again this week with

further developments occurring in both Melbourne and Sydney it was

decided to postpone SRE for the next few weeks to see where things

are heading with restrictions.

School Banking is back on Mondays-children should bring their

bank books to school on this day.

School Cubby

Our P&C have agreed to engage Lee from Cubby King

Creations to help produce a cubby for our playground. Lee’s work is

incredible with workmanship of the highest standard.

Thanks to Magda and Karina who met for a follow up meeting to

help work out some of the design elements for this fantastic

cubby. Enjoy a picture of a similar cubby we are looking for him

to create.

B.P.S Year 6 Mentorship Program

As part of our Year 6 transition to high school, Burringbar Public School have developed a

mentorship program that aims to foster student interest and support possible career

pathways. Students link in with mentors from selected fields during 2020. Our first mentee we

would like to highlight is Kapalu who has shown a keen interest in science.

Rocket Science with KP On Wednesday the 29th of July ‘It’s Rocket Science’ came to our school to teach us about rockets and how to launch them. Cran was my mentor for the day and it was so much fun. Firstly, K-2 got to make their rockets using a tennis ball, recycled plastic bottles and custom made wings.

Firstly we needed to flip our bottle over and put the tennis ball on the bottom. Then we taped it down, secondly slid the wings on and then we were ready to decorate the rocket. After that, we put water in it and prepared it for lift off. We had 3 test pilots Miriam, Travis and Jack - all of their rockets had different amounts of water in them. One rocket was empty, another was half full and the last rocket was completely full!

Once they had their rockets on the launch pads, Cran pumped air into our rockets causing the bottles to compress themselves… 3,2,1 we launched the empty rocket first, it went up extremely high. Then, the half full one and last but not least ,the full one. The first rocket launched up to 50 meters in the air, the half full rocket went up to 80 metres into the air and the full bottle didn’t go higher than Jack (who launched it).

That afternoon, Years 3-6 had their turn. It was super fun and I hope the school does it again in the coming years. Kapalu 4.5.6.D

School Interviews

Interviews usually occur at the end of Term 1.

As students were in lockdown during this time this did

not occur. During this time much contact was had with

parents about their child’s learning.

A letter went out at the beginning of the week asking if

you would like to book an appointment. Interviews will

be done by phone.

Please feel free to book an appointment if you would

like to speak with your child’s teacher. Please note

that there are different dates for different classes as

teachers will be conducting interviews during their

planning time.
