The Reason Behind Plummeting Petrol PricesBy Ailish Parr

The short time they were upon us, it made my day – to be honest it made my week. One of the many struggles of a full-time student trying to main-tain a car and its complimentary needs is the exorbitant price of petrol. My heart pains every time I fill up for more than $50 at the bowser. That money is two and a half hours of work for me at the local cinemas. That is why I was incredibly pleased when petrol plummeted below $1/ litre recently and, to my amazement, stayed that way for a considerable amount of time. It led me to want to know why the prices have been so low lately. What was hap-pening in the oil market to cause such attractive prices?

My research revealed that this twelve-year low occurred because Saudi Arabia flooded the market with crude oil. There has also been a slowdown in global trade because one of the front-runners within the world economy, China, was failing to buy at the levels it had previously. Consequently, they have been facing an economic slump, driving fuel prices down. In the latest statistics released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, it was revealed that in 12 months (ending 31 October 2014), motor vehicles in Australia con-sumed around 32,402 million litres of petrol. That is plenty of petroleum!

So why is it that as I drove through Indooroopilly, retailers were selling for $1.05 but when I ventured through the Southside, prices were below $1? We must recognise that petrol stations are businesses and want to achieve certain profit margins. Some will be cheeky and charge that extra few cents – and I guess if you need petrol and that retailer is the only one in the nearest 10km, you have to succumb to their prices. It is handy to note that independent fuel stations offer cheaper prices to try and gain more of the market share and give the big guns a run for their money.

Naturally, I have been raised as a researcher when it comes to buying any-thing. I have to shop around– petrol included. Saving those 4 extra cents are better in my poor pocket than some rich retailer like Caltex. For those of you like me, I recommend https://www.motormouth.com.au, which in-forms buyers of what they should expect fuel prices to be. In the meantime, read up on oil prices and how they affect the economy and let’s hope that we won’t have to wait another twelve years for the next lull in petroleum prices!

Our people are energetic and inspirational and come from a diverse range of academic backgrounds, including arts, business, accounting, tax, eco-nomics, engineering, finance, health and law.
