As we head into autumn, there is a cool air of change. Trends fresh from

the catwalks of fashion weeks worldwide are influencing our style, the colours

all around us are sharing their golden, copper and red autumnal tones and

Saturday nights begin to highlight the UK’s hidden new talent.

But that’s not the change we are sharing in this issue of The Update. We want

to talk about a whole new Brand philosophy – one that gives you a say

in the future of one of the most influential professional brands, GOLDWELL.

Change is good, we want you to be part of it.

Page 11: Update Magazine - Sept/Oct 2014

“We Think Stylist” is the essence of Goldwell, supported with a fresh new editorial look and

attitude that goes way beyond products. Now, and into the future,

Goldwell is focusing on what it has always done best, supporting

the hair stylist to grow their business and creative artistry by

delivering holistic, service-orientated campaigns that are relevant

for stylists and clients’ needs.

Page 12: Update Magazine - Sept/Oct 2014

New GOLDWELL has been shaped by stylists from around the globe, including the Global Master Team who created the new imagery and star as the voices of the brand.

The stylists request “we want a partner who’s one of us” is brought

to life through the new brand campaign. By listening to stylist’s, Goldwell is reaffirming its position as the trusted salon-only partner that not only understands stylist’s

but truly thinks like them.

Page 13: Update Magazine - Sept/Oct 2014

“whAt MAtteRs tO yOU, MAtteRs tO Us” This bold new look portrays beauty with an edge – aspirational yet accessible, technically

Color Zoom 2014 Summer Party

This exciting event took place at B1 @ Victoria House in London where the GOLD, SILVER and BRONZE winners were

announced to 450 attendees.

This year’s Color Zoom trend, Reallusion, was the theme of the night with lots of hidden details to make

guests look twice. From “Reallusion” canapés including savoury macaroons, upside down flower displays and

cryptic messages on the walls that could only be seen from certain angles…

GOLDWELL set the scene for Color Zoom celebrations.

Page 25: Update Magazine - Sept/Oct 2014

The Mark Leeson Artistic Team opened the show with a stunning model presentation. Using elements of the

Reallusion trend, the team created 8 incredible looks. British Hairdressing Award winners Mark Leeson, Shaun Hall

and Terri Kay transformed three model looks in just 10 minutes, demonstrating quick styling techniques and using

coloured hair pieces to completely change a look, while staying true to the Mark Leeson soft and sexy signature style.

Page 26: Update Magazine - Sept/Oct 2014

AND THE WINNERS ARE…The Bronze, Silver and Gold winners were announced by Goldwell Ambassador

Shane Bennett and previous Color Zoom Global Winners Lisa Whiteman and Neil Barton.

The UK GOLD winners will travel to Berlin this October to compete at the Global Color Zoom Event, recreating their winning “Reallusion” interpretation live in three hours. If they are crowned a Global Winner they will join the International Color Zoom Creative Team and work on the Color Zoom Collection for 2016,

enjoying global fame and PR opportunities.

Congratulations to this year’s Color Zoom UK Winners!

To continue the celebrations, Abby & Karly Whittaker – owners of the Sarah Hodge salon group, styled a flash mob of dancers to lead guests into the KMS California Disco. The disco, previously a hidden

room, was revealed with a huge “KMS” light bulb sign, disco balls and TV presenter Steve Jones from BBC3’s HAIR on the decks to ensure the dance floor was pumping into the early hours.

for Bora Aksu SS15 at London Fashion Week

Kms California was once again invited to be the official hair partner by Bora Aksu at London Fashion Week on Friday 12th september. this season’s hair team was led by Kms California Ambassador sam Burnett, along with Kms editorial Collective Core members - Ashley mcmillian, Andrea Dorata and Neil smith.

The hair concept for the SS15 collection captures the essence of the new collection. “A Dancer with Wings” was inspired by Queen Victoria’s collection of paper dolls. Cottons, silks and organza in ballerina shades of pink and peach are used to reflect innocence and purity, while knotted techniques create the contrasting heavier presence. Black elastic is wrapped around the hair to echo the ballerina’s discipline of tying her pointe shoe ribbons.

Key Products: ADDVOLUME volumizing spray and HAIRSTAY medium hold spray.

GET THE LOOK:

1: Apply ADDVOLUME volumizing spray through damp hair to add texture and body.

2: Blow dry on a low heat. Twist sections while drying to create loose waves and second-day texture.

3: Part hair to the side and allow the larger front section to fall loosely over the face.

4: Create an effortless low side pony on the heavier side of the parting (don’t brush smooth), allowing the front section to sweep across one eye. Secure pony with a band just below the ear.

5: Wrap the ponytail with a long length of black elastic, starting at the top and working ¾ down. Tie the elastic tightly and cut the ends off.

6: Spritz ADDVOLUME volumizing spray on the end of the pony tail and twist to add messy texture.

7: Spritz with HAIRSTAY medium hold spray. Smooth down any flyaways with your hand.

The KMS Collective teams get involved in a

TOP SECRET MISSION!The KMS Editorial Team and Salon Ambassadors (The Collective), had the unique opportunity to test two new products from KMS ahead of launch, offering feedback and top tips to KMS about each product.

The KMS Salon Ambassadors, a group of stylists who have trained as in-salon KMS experts to boost retail, came together for two days in June at the Academy London for their fourth group session of the year. Here they attended product training and brainstormed developments for their Top Secret Mission!

When asked what she thought about upcoming KMS California launch, Salon Ambassador Marissa Benjamin from Hair by ME in Bridgend said “there’s just so much happening and i love it! it doesn’t matter if your hair is long or short, there is something for everyone and you know that Kms California products really work”.

The KMS Editorial Team experienced a hands-on “secret” session with award- winning stylist Sam Burnett, who said, “this is one of the great aspects of Kms California, and in particular the Collective Programme, having the opportunity to experience features and products before they even hit the market. As a stylist that exclusivity is so important for our creativity and development with the brand.”

The Top Secret Mission was exclusively available to KMS experts, who were involved in this brand development before anyone else. The experience was described as “rewarding” and “allowed us to feel connected with the brand”.

The new products are available now, turn over the page to find out more.

RADIANCE mEDI SPA – EXETERowners: Dr ros Debenham and daughter Katie Debenham

Winners of salon Design 2014 at the British Hairdressing Business Awards

What was the inspiration for the interior? We wanted a clean look, but still wanted the “wow” factor which we achieved with purple touches.

How long did the refurbishment of the building take and when did the salon open? The property started as a 7,500 sq. ft. space that looked just like a car park. We started the project in November 2012 and opened in April 2014.

Did you experience any challenges? The challenges were dealing with a property below ground level on the roadside, yet above ground the opposite side. We wanted to make the entrance upstairs enticing. The long corridor is broken up by dramatic purple glass areas and doors that allow users of the spa to see into the hair salon.

What is your favourite part of the salon? The mirrors - everything else has such clean lines with the marble look tiles and white salon furniture. The silver mirrors just stand out in a dramatic way.

Page 41: Update Magazine - Sept/Oct 2014

When I decided to go into hairdressing it was a bit of a shock for my parents! Fortunately for me my neighbour’s son was dating the salon manager at Harvey Nichols. Her advice was, “if you want to get to the top, start at the top” and gave me a shortlist of salons that I should approach for a job.

I was lucky to be accepted by what was then, one of the top five salons in London, Molton Brown. This was an incredible experience and gave me the opportunity to learn from some of the great names of our industry including Sam McKnight, the now legendary session artist.

At 22, I left London to open my first salon. Even now, I realise just how young I was, and probably one of the best decisions I made was to join a newly opened business school called 365.

This showed me that you could successfully mix the artistry of hairdressing and the skills of business to create a truly progressive business. Having completed the core programme, the founder of the organisation, Leslie Spiers, approached me to become one of his lecturers. This was a turning point in my career.

Although I reluctantly hung up my scissors 15 years ago, I still enjoy seeing the incredible creativity from this dynamic industry through the young people that work with me. I now have time to focus on my other passion which is communicating business skills to salon owners in a way that adds real value to their lives and teams.

But, it hasn’t always been easy! In fact, I often rejoice the fact that after just five years of being in business I nearly went bankrupt. I learned more during those seven painful months than at any other time in business. What I learned then is as true today as it has ever been and I quite often joke with salon owners, “who would you rather have talking to you about business, someone who’s spent their life in a classroom or someone who’s been down there in the trenches where the bullets are flying?”

Even though I spend a lot of my time with salon owners now, I never forget my origins. I am incredibly lucky to have an amazing creative, fun team around me! Our clientele is typical of many salons like ours with a wide diversification of age, background and profession. We have learnt that the consistent merging of great hairdressing and great customer care is what has helped us to stand the test of time.

I would state that our growth, even in the last five years, can be attributed not only to my incredible team but also the partnership we have with Goldwell whose support has meant that my team have grown along with my profits.

And finally if I could travel back in time and whisper something in my own younger ear it would be, keep things simple and focus on those things that matter, then you can enjoy the journey.
