Golf Pro News Continued:

Hurricane Junior Tour Volunteers Needed On Monday and Tuesday, July 18th & 19th, The Walker Course will host the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour. More than 80 juniors from across the southeast will compete for age division titles. As in the past, we will again need a host of volunteers to drive shuttle carts to keep these young folks moving around the golf course. If you are able to spare a few hours either or both days, we would love to have your assistance. We have morning and afternoon shifts available. Please call the golf shop or sign up in the shop for an assignment. We could not host this event without the help of our junior golf supporters like you. Thanks for your help! Junior Club Championship The annual Junior Club Championship will take place on Tuesday/Wednesday, July 27th & 28th , beginning at 5:30pm each day. Juniors will play 3, 6, or 9 holes daily, depending on the age division. Divisional winners will receive trophies and all players and parents will enjoy a Pizza Hut pizza party following play on Thursday evening. There is NO ENTRY FEE, as the member’s tournament committee sponsors this event each year. Call the golf shop to sign up by July 25th. Match Play Reminder If you are still in the running for your match play flight championship, be sure to call your next opponent and schedule the match so we can keep this event moving toward conclusion before the July 31st deadline. Member Guest Pass Cards Your annual Member Guest Pass Card is included with your most recent monthly statement for July. If you did not receive the pass, please contact Brent Jessup (before July 25) for a replacement card. Cards lost or misplaced after July 25th will NOT be replaced. This card is valid for three complimentary greens fees for your accompanied guests. Remember the time restrictions noted on the back of the card. (Not valid on weekends or holidays until after 2pm and also not valid on home football weekends Friday-Sunday). Thanks for being a Walker Course member and enjoy! Senior Interclub Update Our first match scheduled for Cobbs Glen was rained out, so our first match was actually played at The Walker Course on Tuesday, May 26th. We got waxed! There are eight players on each team, four twosomes playing better net score with two points for winning the front, two points for the back, and two for winning the overall match for a total of 6 points available in each twosome match and a total of 24 for the team. Cobbs beat us 17-7. Ouch! Three of our four teams struggled, while the team of Eddie Brown and Ron Thomas won four of its’ six available points. Our second match was played at Cobbs Glen on Tuesday, May 31, and what a comeback we had! The #1 team of Jim LaRue and Jim Kenworthy won all six of its’ points, led by Mr. Kenworthy’s 72. The #2 team: Ron Thomas and Ste-ve Finger won five points. The #3 team: Andy Walker and Bill Banton won four points with Mr. Walker shooting (74) and Mr. Banton (75). The #4 team: Billy Rice and Mike Hembree won four points. Next on the schedule was the Smithfields Country Club match at Walker Course on June 9th. With the summer travel schedule upon us, the composition of the team changed substantially for each match and the group did well, beating Smithfields 18-6. Jim LaRue shot (73) and his partner Andy Walker won their match 5-1. Jerry Crabtree shot (80) and won his team match with partner, Bob Dobson 5-1. Stan Childers and Frankie Horner put the closing touch on the match by ousting their opponents 6-0! On Tuesday, June 21st, the team traveled to Smithfields and got waxed 24-0! Even though some of our players shot well, the Smithfields players had outstanding rounds, and we just couldn’t stand up to their barrage. Our next match is against The Preserve at Verdae in Greenville on Fr iday, July 15, so put your name on the list in the golf shop and go with us. We’ll take the lowest eight handicaps of those who sign up to play. The team lineup must be submitted one week in ad-vance, so if you are available, please sign up. Sincerely, Team Captain: Mike Hembree (Note: Due to flooding, the July 15

th match has been switched to The Walker Course. We will play at The Preserve

on July 29th).

DON GARRETT, CGCS SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

June Status June has been extremely dry with only a half inch of rain recorded here at the course for the entire month. To make the situation worse, our transfer pump that moves water from Hartwell to the irrigation pond on #9 went down for 10 days which curtails our ability to irrigate as much as we needed (from as much as 450,000 gallons a day to about 200,000 a day), putting us further behind. Upper 90’s and wind have only served to dry things out further. In this type of weather, every gap in sprinkler coverage and areas outside the throw of the sprinklers is quite evident. Hopefully, we will get some rain soon and things will bounce back. We were able to aerify the fairways as planned and also verticut the front nine. The back nine were not done due to a scheduling conflict with our contractor who performs this work and then due to the dry weather. Hopefully, we can verticut the back nine sometime later this summer. The first portion of #1 and the lower portion of #9 were also topdressed. We started this program last summer to try to firm up and dry out these perennially wet areas. We plan to aerify and topdress these fairways at least one more time and hopefully twice later this summer. Greens The greens were aerified as scheduled on Monday and Tuesday, June 26 & 27. We used a ½ inch coring tine and topdresed to fill the holes. The greens were then rolled with a 36 inch, 1.5 ton asphalt roller. This was a process that I have been looking forward to because of the results we saw from performing this work on the chipping green last summer following recovery. We anticipate full recovery after 21 days, based on some testing we did on the nursery green earlier this month. One change we made from last year was that we increased the fertility rate in order to speed up recovery. An application of quick release nitrogen was made 7 days prior to aerification. This fertilizer will provide rapid growth then be gone, allowing us to regain control of the growth rate and the green speed. Following recovery, we will be spoon feeding small quantities of plant food, applying growth regulator and lightly and frequently verticutting, brushing, and topdressing.

Chinese Checkers anyone?
