Getting Dark Again…Again After a hugely successful inaugural season last year that played for seven weeks

to packed houses here at the Playhouse, the same cast of crazies is back for an-

other season of fun and foolishness in “Getting Dark Again…Again!” Featuring

world-class fiddler Jennifer Roland, the cast is rounded out by Troy Young, Mark

MacIntyre, and Jason Kempt (having about two hundred years experience among

them). The show features an all-new mix of music and comedy relative to Atlan-

tic Canada, and specifically, Cape Breton Island. If last year’s show is any indi-

cation, Getting Dark Again…Again! will have audiences rolling in the aisles and

clapping and stomping for more…Again! Catch it before it’s gone; this year’s

show runs only for a limited five-week engagement. Don’t miss out!

The Fortress of Louisbourg is a National Historic Site of Canada and the location of a one-

quarter partial reconstruction of an 18th-century French fortress at Louisbourg on Cape

Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Its two sieges, especially that of 1758, were turning points in

the Anglo-French struggle for what today is Canada

The original settlement was made in 1713, and initially called Havre à l'Anglois. Subse-

quently, the fishing port grew to become a major commercial port and a strongly defended

fortress. The fortifications eventually surrounded the town. The walls were constructed

mainly between 1720 and 1740. By the mid-1740s Louisbourg was one of the most exten-

sive (and expensive) European fortifications constructed in North America. It was sup-

ported by two smaller garrisons on Île Royale located at present-day St. Peter's and En-

glishtown. The Fortress of Louisbourg suffered key weaknesses, since it was erected on

low-lying ground commanded by nearby hills and its design was directed mainly toward

sea-based assaults, leaving the land-facing defences relatively weak. A third weakness was

that it was a long way from France or Quebec, from which reinforcements might be sent. It

was captured by British colonists in 1745, and was a major bargaining chip in the negotia-

tions leading to the 1748 treaty ending the War of the Austrian Succession. It was returned

to the French in exchange for border towns in what is today Belgium. It was captured again

in 1758 by British forces in the Seven Years' War, after which its fortifications were sys-

tematically destroyed by British engineers. The British continued to have a garrison at

Louisbourg until 1768.

The fortress and town were partially reconstructed in the 1960s and 1970s, using some of

the original stonework, which provided jobs for unemployed coal miners. The head stone-

mason for this project was Ron Bovaird. The site is operated by Parks Canada as a living

history museum.

Situated on one of the most picturesque coasts of Cape Breton Island, on a 15-acre site filled

with wild roses and grasses, the Museum pays tribute to the region's long and rich history of coal

mining. It is home to profound stories of miners and their families, and the resource that helped

build a nation. The Museum is also home to the famous choir of miners - The Men of the Deeps.

While visiting with us, don't miss an underground tour of the Ocean Deeps Colliery, a coal mine

located beneath the Museum building. Retired coal miners are your guides for this excursion

underground, and promise to entertain and inform you in a custom that has become treasured by

visitors all over the world.

The exhibit area focuses on the geological development of Cape Breton's coal field. Learn all

about the various types of coal mining and mining techniques, see our vast display of equipment

and listen to the stories of miners, the companies they worked for, their unions and their families.

the everyday lives of the townsfolk. An-

chored by dramatic displays dedicated to

the town's founding industries, coal min-

ing and fishing, the Museum is a testa-

ment to the struggles and triumphs of its

people.

In the Old Town Hall where Glace Bay's

past was forged, its story is being pre-

served so that future generations may

understand and appreciate the rich history

they share with those who walked these

halls before them. From its growing col-

lection of artifacts and photographs, and

with assistance of the Glace Bay Histori-

cal Society, the Museum creates tempo-

rary theme-based exhibits that deliver

slices of Glace Bay's History.

This national historic site of Canada hon-

ours Marconi's role in the development of

today's network of global communications.

In 1902, the first official wireless message

was sent from this site across the Atlantic

Ocean to England. Visitors can see the

Wireless Hall of Fame and walk the inter-

pretive trail to the original transmission

station.

Canada Day (July 1) to Labour Day

(September 1, 2014).

Plan to spend 30 minutes to see the

exhibits at the Visitor Centre and the

remains of the Table Head station.

Historic Site

As early as the 1720s the French inhabited the area to supply Fortress of

Louisbourg with coal. They named the location baie de Glace (literally, Ice

Bay) because of the sea ice which filled the ocean each winter. In 1748, after

the capture of Fortress Louisbourg, the British constructed Fort William at Ta-

ble Head in order to protect a mine that produced coal to supply the Louis-

bourg garrison. The fort itself was a blockhouse, brought from Boston, with a

palisade. When Cape Breton Island was returned to French control, Fort Wil-

liam continued in service until 1752 when it was destroyed by fire.

More permanent settlement of Glace Bay probably can be dated from 1818

when Walter Blackett obtained a grant of land on the south side of the Bay.

Coal mining existed on a small scale until the 1860s when four mines were in

operation within the future town boundaries. These included the Hub, Harbour,

Caledonia and Glace Bay Collieries. The first large mine, the Hub Shaft of

Glace Bay opened in 1861 and a total of 12 mines in Glace Bay were in opera-

tion. Following the formation of the Dominion Coal Company in 1893, the

coal mining industry expanded significantly in what was to become Glace Bay

with the opening of several new mines. In 1894, the government gave exclu-

sive mining rights to the Dominion Coal Company.

A Brief History of Port Hood

Port Hood, the Shire Town of Inverness County, Cape Breton, has had a long history dating back to the earliest days of human settlement in this part

of Nova Scotia. The first people who spent time along this shore were the Mi’kmaq-the aboriginal

people who are native to this part of Canada. “Kek-weom-kek” (‘sandbar’) was the name given to this

area by the Mi’kmaq and was the first of a series of names given to Port Hood. The protected harbour

with its sandy low-lying beaches was a natural stopping place for many early visitors.

There may have been Basque fishermen traveling along the coast as early as the 1500’s. The earliest

European name given to Cape Breton Island was ‘baccalaos’ which means ‘cod’ in the Portuguese

language. The pursuit of the cod fishery provided the main impetus for European exploration and set-

tlement along Canada’s east coast for the first three centuries of our history. However, only sporadic

summer fishing camps were established. No formal European impact was made until the French ar-

rived in the 17th century. At the time of the building of Fortress Louisbourg, the French developed a

stone quarry on what is now Port Hood Island (which at that time was a peninsula connected to the

mainland by a low-lying isthmus). In the 1740’s and 50’s, this was the main quarry on Cape Breton

Island for the finished or dressed stone used at Louisbourg for window and door casements. About 60

men worked here in the summer season at the quarry and the stone was sent by barge through the Strait of Canso to Louisbourg. There were also

Acadian boat builders in the area who conducted a local fishery until the 1760’s although they did not establish a permanent settlement. Read More

Chestico Museum The Chestico Museum is located in Harbourview, just a few kilometers south of the community

of Port Hood on Route 19.

Operated by the Chestico Museum & Historical Society, which was formed in 1978, the museum

officially opened in 1986 in a building that was formerly the Harbourview School. The Chestico

Museum houses a selection of artifacts, displays, historical photographs, genealogical informa-

tion, house histories and other items pertaining to the community of Port Hood and surrounding

area. The museum is open from the first of June until the end of August. Hours of operation are

9:00 to 5:00 Monday through Friday and 10:00 to 2:00 on Saturday. Admission is $2.00 per per-

son or $5.00 per family.

St. Peter’s is a community with a rich and varied history. One of the oldest settlements in Canada,

we have a proud tradition of story-telling. Read on to find out more about our small but mighty Village!

St. Peter’s is one of North America’s oldest European settlements, tracing its history to the 1630s

when a small fortified settlement named “Saint Pierre” was built by merchants from La Rochelle, France

on the isthmus. In 1650, La Rochelle merchant Nicholas Denys took possession of Saint Pierre and encour-

aged the fur trade with local members of the Mi’kmaq Nation who used the isthmus as a canoe portage

route between the Atlantic Ocean and Bras d’Or Lake. In addition to establishing a fur trading post, Denys

later used the isthmus as a “haul over road” for portaging small sailing ships from Bras d’Or Lake to the

Atlantic and vice versa.

France lost possession of present-day peninsular (main land) Nova Scotia to Britain in the Treaty of

Utrecht in 1713. France began moving some Acadian colonists to Ile Royale (present-day Cape Breton

Island) to populate this

remaining outpost of

was created near the

17th century location of

the fortified community

of Saint Pierre as a lo-

gistics base and supply

centre for Fortress

Louisbourg. To protect

Port Toulouse, France

built another fortification on the shore. The forts at Port Toulouse and Saint Pierre and

settlements in the area were destroyed by the British in 1758 following the fall of For-

tress Louisbourg and the rest of Acadia became a British colony.

1758-present

Acadia in its entirety was given the name Nova Scotia, which was used as the

name used since 1713 for Britain’s portion of the territory. Britain sponsored settlers

and displaced veterans from the Seven Years’ War to move into the area of Saint Pi-

erre/Port Toulouse. France declared war on Great Britain on February 1, 1793 during

the French Revolutionary Wars. In response, Britain built Fort Dorchester on the sum-

mit of Mount Granville, a hill overlooking the isthmus.

The village of St. Peters was founded early in the 1800s. Local residents reha-

bilitated Denys’s old “haul over road”, laying wood skids for portaging small sailing

ships across the isthmus. The route through Bras d’Or Lake was considered a much

shorter and safer voyage to Sydney than traveling around the exposed southern coast of

Cape Breton Island. In 1825 a feasibility study into building a canal was undertaken.

Construction of the St. Peters Canal began in 1854 and took 15 years of digging, blast-

ing and drilling through a solid granite hill 20 m (65 ft high to build a channel 800 m

(2,600 ft long with an average width of 30 m (100 ft). The canal opened in 1869 at the

dawn of the industrial age on Cape Breton Island. There can be a tidal difference of up to 1.4 m (4.5 ft) thus a lock

was designed to regulate water levels.

The walls of the canal were lined with timber planking and locks were installed at each end. Modifications to the

canal and lock continued until 1917 and the canal saw moderate to heavy use by small coastal steamships and

barges, particularly during the First and Second World Wars when coal from the Sydney Coal Field was transported

on this sheltered inland route to avoid U boats. A marble quarry on the western shore of Bras d’Or Lake at Marble

Mountain also generated some shipping traffic.

The canal was designated a National Historic Site in 1929 and the federal government took over its opera-

tion. Parks Canada is the government agency responsible for its maintenance and operation and undertook a major

project to restore both entrances to the canal in 1985. During the postwar, commercial shipping has largely avoided

traveling through Bras d’Or Lake and the canal is almost exclusively used by pleasure boats, particularly sail boats

with the increased popularity of cruising Bras d’Or Lake in recent decades.

Parks Canada operates the canal from May to October each year. Vessels transiting the canal are limited by the size

of the lock, which measures 91.44 m (301 ft) long, 14.45 m (47 ft) wide, and 4.88m (16 ft) draught. The ruins of

Nicholas Denys’s Fort Saint Pierre are located on the grounds of the lock master’s house (ca. 1876) and the ruins of

Fort Dorchester are located on Mount Granville which overlooks the Atlantic approach to the canal.

As is our usual tradition, warm-up races will be run on the club’s buoyed short course, nearby the canal on Friday afternoon. The big race starts on Sat-urday morning, with a course of approxi-mately 25 nautical miles (determined based on wind and weather) on the lake. It’s a spectacular sight, followed by a great party at the Marina. Prizes will be awarded for ‘best-dressed’ vessels in sev-eral categories.
