Dear Parents/Guardians

Welcome back to Semester 2 of the 2016 academic year.

We are excited about the semester ahead as we continue to build a culture of achievement and continuous improvement at Lindisfarne.

The holiday period was a time of continued focus and learning for our Year 12 students as they worked on revision and renewal in preparation for their HSC exams and assessments.

The School was also a hive of activity with the tennis court refurbishment, student carpark fencing and SRC shade and seating areas all completed. I particularly thank the P&F for the funding provided for the tennis court refurbishment and the SRC for the work on the shade and seating area.

It was heartening to welcome 14 new students to Lindisfarne to commence Semester 2. Enrolment enquiry is strong as Lindisfarne increasingly is the school of first choice for families on the southern Gold Coast, Tweed Coast and northern NSW. Please continue to encourage families and friends seeking enrolment at the School to make contact re a tour and further information. The next Principal’s Tour at Mahers Lane is on Tuesday 2 August and Sunshine Avenue on Thursday 4 August and I look forward to showing families around the School.

Over the next two weeks students are involved in athletics carnivals at the Primary and Secondary levels. This is a good opportunity to build House Spirit and a sense of connectedness and belonging. If the Secondary carnival is my indicator, House Spirit is thriving at Lindisfarne!

It was exciting to commence the Semester by welcoming students from St Riquier Lycée School, Amiens, Northern France to our School. The visiting students attend a K-12 co-educational Catholic school in France and are a delightful group of young people. I am looking forward to further exchange opportunities in the future and thank our host families for opening their hearts and homes to our visiting students.

During the course of the School holidays I attended the Heads of Independent Co-educational Schools (HICES) Conference in Sydney on Courageous Leadership. Delegates were inspired by a diverse group of leaders. Sessions that I found particularly uplifting included:• Matina Jewell – A Peacekeeper’s Perspective on Leadership,

From the Chaplain

Vale Harrison Craig Piper (Harry) Class of 2014

The Lindisfarne School Community is deeply saddened by the passing of former student HarrisonCraig Piper (Harry).

The 2014 graduate completed all of his education P – 12 at the School.

We offer our prayers and thoughts to his mother Kerrie Craig and father Frank Piper, his extended family, friends and classmates during this time.

We will honour Harry’s memory at Lindisfarne by speaking his name often and living our own lives well.

During our three week break, many people in our world have been subjected to extreme sadness, violence, terrorism and loss; from the civil unrest and violence in Turkey to the horror of the Bastille Day attack in France and the racial and political tension in the USA. It seems that as a result of these extreme and surprising events, the centuries old problems in Israel, Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan have become “old news” and are of less interest and significance, at least in the media.

While we might not have been directly affectedby these particular events, the Lindisfarne community has been subjected to its own bad news stories. Staff arrived on Monday morning to learn of the passing of Harrison Piper in tragic accidental circumstances, as well as several other stories of the sudden passing of friends or loved ones.

One might be forgiven for feeling overwhelmed by the frequency of sad and tragic news, whetherfrom around the world or right here in our own community.

However, in the midst of it all, I still don’t have to look very far to see examples of love and grace and generosity and kindness. The extreme difficulties of life have the potential to re-awakenus to all of the blessings that we have been ignoring or taking for granted; the unpromptedcuddle and “I love you Daddy” from a child, listening to the call of a magpie instead of being subjected to the deafening blast of a bomb or the whistling of bullets, the ready access we have to clean water and plenty of healthy food.

In many places, Scripture encourages us to focus on gratitude for the blessings of life which can quite often calm the internal storms of chaos, confusion, hate or fear.

May you know God’s blessing and presence as you navigate your way through these sad and stormy times.

Rev Chad

• Dr Jan Robertson – The Moral Purpose of Courageous Leadership

• Allan Border – The Epitome of Courage in a Leadership Conversation

• Glen Gerreyn – Courageous Leadership in Disruptive Times

It was also great to have time for discussion with colleagues involved at the forefront of Educational Leadership in Australia.

In closing I formally advise the school community that our Head of English/History Mr Neville Erskine will retire at the end of the 2016 school year. Mr Erskine has been a wonderful servant to our school making an enormous contribution over the years as a teacher, head of department, director of curriculum, deputy principal and acting principal. There will be an opportunity to appropriately celebrate the contribution of Mr Neville Erskine to Lindisfarne prior to the end of the school year.

Lindisfarne Ski TripThe 2016 Ski Trip was an amazing week with students and staff experiencing one of the biggest snowfalls in recent history. It’s not often you have you put snow chains on the coach out the front of Vikas Lodge in Jindabyne to get up to the ski fields. While the conditions were extremely testing at times the resultof the blizzard was a winter wonderland and a powder paradise enjoyed by all.

Here are some thoughts on the trip from some of those who took the long ride to the south.

“This year’s ski trip was the best school trip I have ever been on. With great snow, people and experiences, this week will be one I won’t forget.”Fraser Crane

“The ski trip was amazing. Gnarly snow and great weather accompanied by fantastic people has made this a memorable experience.” Charles Davey

“The promise of an unforgettable week was achieved in more ways than one. Personally, the highlight for me was the feeling of snow under my feet. Overall, the people were excellent, the conditions great and the experience definitely worthwhile.” Helena Morgan

Year 8 GeographyYear 8 Geography students visited Dreamworld as part of their Tourism unit. In the Dreamworld classroom, students were treated to an in-depth look at the park and how it operates. The presentation was informative and students learnt about the targetmarket of the theme park as well as advertising methods and branding. After the chat, students enjoyed the rides and attractions of Dreamworld.

Thank you to Mr Seguin, Mrs Wharton and Mrs Whiticker for joining the group for the day.

Year 12 Geography People and Economic Activity Aquaculture Recently, Year 12 Geography students were treatedto a personal tour with Gold Coast Tiger Prawns General Manager – Nick Moore for their People and Economic Activity Topic Fieldwork Assessment Task.

Gold Coast Tiger Prawns is a great success story of innovation and do not normally do tours. They are world leaders in the aquaculture industry as they are the only company to breed black tiger prawns in captivity. They operate on a massive scale.

We also visited the Spit to talk to Roxene the owner of a small trawler to assess different perspectives on the seafood industry. We were lucky enough to sample some of the fresh produce on offer. The last part of the day involved a visit to Nerang Community Gardens to see the ultimate example of the sustainable future of aquaculture and farming.

“Fieldwork enhances our learning and gives us first hand experience of real life processes.” CJ McCreery

“Nerang Community Gardens gave us hope for the future that farming does not have to be bad for the enviromment. There is hope for humanity. It would be awesome if we could set something up like this at our school.” Mia Tarantini

French HomestayI would like to take this opportunity to welcome 15 French students and Monsieur Alain Alem into the Lindisfarne community for the next two weeks. The visiting students are from a K-12 school in Amiens and are here to experience Australian culture and life in an Australian school. During their stay, students will be immersed in classes with their host brother or sister, and also with the students studying French at the Sunshine Avenue Campus and Stage 3.

A range of external excursions have been organised during their stay, including a trip to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary to view some Australian wildlife.

English FacultyCreative Writing CompetitionThis year, Lindisfarne began its annual creative writing competition to provide a forum for high school students to practise their creative writing skill. Whilst many of the entries this year showed promise, only six students could be selected as the 2016 winners. The following winners are congratulated on their engaging responses:

Year 7: Elodie WesthoffYear 8: Ethan RobinsYear 9: Abby FrazerYear 10: Ciara BlumYear 11: Eden TokatlyYear 12: Corey Potter

Public Speaking CompetitionThe ability to communicate effectively in formalsituations is an important skill to have as students move from school to the workforce. Whilst many students may not be excited about standing in front of a large audience, even the most nervous person’s confidence will improve with continued exposure to public speaking.

This term, Lindisfarne will hold its annual Public Speaking Competition. This competition is open to all students from Year 1 to Year 12. Primary school teachers will provide specific details on times and topics to their students, however, interested students in Years 7 - 12 need to compose an original five minute speech on a topic of their choice that is suitable to the school environment.

Secondary school heats will be held in Term 3 during Week 2. All interested secondary school students should register their names with Mrs Walker by Monday 25 July.

CAPA NewsMurwillumbah Festival of Performing ArtsDuring the month of June, a number of ensemble groups travelled to Murwillumbah to compete at the Murwillumbah Festival of Performing Arts. We would like to congratulate the Senior Concert Band for achieving first place in the orchestral section and commend the Stage Band B group as runners up in the combined vocal and instrumental section. The Junior Chamber Ensemble competed in the mixed instrumental section taking out third place amongst nine highly accomplished ensemble competitors. Their professionalism and behaviour are to be commended.

Lindisfarne Senior Concert Band. Jemma McNicoll (Year 7), pictured left, and Ashleigh Budge (Year 9) both performed at Murwillumbah with outstanding results.

Ashleigh competed in the 14yrs section, receiving first place, whilst Jemma came away with a third place in the 14yrs Vocal Solo Popular and Highly Commended in the 12 years Vocal Character.

Congratulations to both students! Lucie Schuricht, Coordinator of Music 5-12 On the first Monday of the holidays the Sunshine Avenue Choir performed at the Murwillumbah Festival of Performing Arts, placing first in their section. The students were advocates for our school, displaying impeccable manners at all times and demonstrating excellent performance etiquette whilst

on stage. The choir is to be commended on their commitment to weekly rehearsals and for always giving their best which contributed to their success at the eisteddfod. A huge thank you must be given to Mary Walters who is a mentor to both myself and the students through her vast knowledge of choir techniques and her outstanding piano accompanying.

Amy Cronk and Will Frazer.

Tina Ross, Coordinator of Performing Arts P - 4 ‘EPIC’ - Grin and Tonic Theatre Troupe PerformanceLast Tuesday students from Years 9 and 10 Drama were fortunate enough to view an in-school performance of ‘Epic’, courtesy of the Grin and Tonic Theatre Troupe. ‘Epic’ allowed students to examine the world of Bertolt Brecht and the nature of political theatre via his famous work, ‘The Caucasian Chalk Circle.’

A Twentieth Century dramatist, Brecht is best known for provoking self-reflection and a critical view of the action on the stage in order to recognise injustice and exploitation and to move the audience to go from the theatre and effect change in the world outside.

As an interactive performance, students from Lindisfarne joined the cast from Grin and Tonic to help challenge the audience and to communicate the idea that reality could be constructed and, as such, was also changeable. Students left the performance with a greater awareness of a style of drama that has had one of the most profound effects on modern theatre, as well as an understanding that drama is not always just about entertainment, but that their ideas can help to change the world for the better. K-4 Fun Athletics CarnivalOn the last day of Term 2, many Sunshine Avenue Campus students and teachers enjoyed delicious meat and vegetable skewers served by members of the P&F Association. There were 300 skewers cooked, which is the largest number at an event so far. Thanks to those families who purchased skewers for themselves and their children - close to $500 was raised.

Christmas Tea Towels - Preschool to Year 6Over the next few weeks you might hear your child talk about having to draw a portrait of themselves. The P&F has organised for class tea towels to be produced and made available for purchase as Christmas gifts for family and friends. The aim is to have these ready for delivery to the School by 7 November for distribution. The price will be advised in next few weeks, so stay tuned.

Sleep is Essential "Sleep is essential for a healthy life, and it is important to promote healthy sleep habits in early childhood," says Dr. Paruthi, of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. "It is especially important as children reach adolescence to continue to ensure that teens are able to get sufficient sleep."

How much do you need? • Infants between 4 and 12 months - 12

to 16 hours of sleep including naps. • Children 1 and 2 years - 11 to 14 hours • Children 3 and 5 years old - 10 to 13

hours. • 6 to 12 years old- 9 to 12 hours • Teenagers to 18 need 8 to 10 hours • Adults, - 7 to 9 hours of sleep each day Getting the right amount of shuteye is critical to kids’ developing brains and bodies. The consensus from the panel was that if children clock in enough hours of sleep on a regular basis, it will lead to a host of improvements, plus better overall mental and physical health. On the flipside, the researchers found that sleeping fewer than the recommended hours directly affected a child’s behavior and increased their risk of a number of potentially harmful and life-long health problems.

Putting aside enough sleep for a child is one of the best ways parents can lay a foundation of healthy habits that children can take with them into adulthood. With more than one third of the adult population sleep deprived, sleep becomes paramount for children to avoid the consequences that come with a lifetime of sleep problems.

Why you should always serve unhealthy snacks in a small bowl.

It is often said that gaining weight is a simple matter of energy intake being greater than energy we use up. While this notion is certainly correct, it does not account for all the factors that drive one to eat more calories than we need.

Take for example the size of a bowl from which you eat your snacks.

Could this simple factor play a role in the number of calories you may eat?

Back in 2005, Wansink and Cheney performed a wonderfully simple study and found that when snacks are offered in a large bowl, people take 53% more food (146 extra calories) and eat 56% (142 calories) more than when offered the same amount of food but in a smaller bowl (roughly half the size of large bowl).

Take home message? If you have friends coming over for a party, or you’re making snacks for yourself or your family, try the following: place the healthy snacks in large bowls and the unhealthy ones in small bowls. Theoretically, people should eat more of the healthy snacks and less of the unhealthy ones.

Take the time for time with your children. It may not always feel like it, but your child’s favourite person is you! Lots of parents have very full days, but time with your child is very valuable. Children who spend time with their parents behave better and feel better about themselves. They have lots of imagination and love games. So get out and have some fun together! It will help your child be the best they can be. • Find time where you can. Even 5 minutes

a day talking face to face makes a difference.

• Turn off distractions like the phone or TV. Let your child know that they are important.

• Respond to your child’s interests – if they are an active child: play outside; if they like to draw, sit at a table and be creative together.

• Make most of your time together relaxing and fun, only occasionally use it to discipline or to bring up unpleasant topics.

• Find activities you both enjoy. Sharing fun times creates lasting memories.

• Don’t be discouraged if your child doesn’t respond right away; try different activities until you find one you both enjoy.
