Challenging

new rontiersHaving incubated Sunway

University College to Sunway

University in its 25 years o

existence, Sunway College

continues to make great

strides ahead with its own

great plans to expand and

challenge new rontiers.

  Along with it, according to

Elizabeth Lee, Executive

Director, Sunway Education

Group, is the possibility o

setting up its own campuses

in other parts o the world.brings you the story …

Cover Story

Sunway College may not have continued to exist when it was irst accorded University

College status by the Ministry o Higher Education in 2004, and later, a ull university early

this year.

Between 2004 and 2010, when it was still a university college, it had started oering its own

undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, while running various pre-university and

proessional programmes. It maintained its twinning arrangement with Victoria University

and continued to run the American Degree Transer Programme, to enable students tospend the preparatory years in their undergraduate programmes locally and inishing their

degree overseas.

But ater Sunway became a ull university in January this year, the need to continue operating

Sunway College became a necessity.

“Hence,” as Sunway Education Group’s Executive Director, Elizabeth Lee put it, “Sunway

College’s existence is to meet a dierent set o expectations. While the University is able

to stand on its own to oer its own Foundation, Diploma and Degree (Postgraduate and

Undergraduate) UK university-validated programmes, and indulge itsel in research and

curriculum development, Sunway College provides a wide range o proessional quali ications

and internationally recognised pre-university programmes in collaboration with reputable

international bodies such as ICAEW and ACCA. Sunway College will continue to oer Australian twinning programmes to

students who preer to complete their degrees in Malaysia.”

While the degree oered by Sunway University will be validated by a Top 10 UK university, Lancaster University, Sunway

College graduates will graduate with a testamur rom the oreign institution. “Both are pathways to a good career in the

corporate world,” said Lee. “In the process, students have more options to choose rom. What’s more important is that they

must know their career objectives.”

“Sunway College’s

existence is to meet

 a different set of

expectations.”

Our Story

Sunway College started in 1986, when its ounder, Tan Sri

Dato’ Seri Dr Jerey Cheah, AO decided that education will

always be very close to the heart o Malaysian parents. The

College started operating rom a building in Petaling Jaya

State New Town.

Within a short span o time, Sunway College became a popular

household name or quality private higher education. It had a

number o twinning programmes with reputable universities

rom Australia and the United Kingdom. It was also the

incubator to a Malaysian campus o Monash University rom

1998 beore Monash’s new campus was set up within the

same township.

In 2009, Sunway University College became one o very

ew private higher education institutions in Malaysia to be

rated ‘Excellent’ in the rst ever quality rating

system in Malaysia – the ‘SETARA’ by the Malaysian

Qualications Agency (MQA). With its excellent

rating, quality delivery o teaching and learning,

and signicant contribution towards developing the

nation’s workorce, Sunway University College was

given the ull-fedged university status and became

Sunway University in January 2011. It is today a

well-respected name in private higher education in

Southeast Asia, drawing students rom Indonesia,

China, Vietnam, as well as the Middle-Eastern

continent.

Quarter o a century old now, Sunway College has

indeed made great strides in the higher education scene in

Malaysia.

What particularly makes Sunway College attractive to

employers, said Lee, is that its students have received

numerous accolades that continue to make the College

management and sta proud o their achievements.

One o its students, Gan Fang Wen emerged Top in the

World or Mathematics AS-Level. Fang has been accepted

to pursue her studies in Medicine at Cambridge University.

Two o its students, Kwong Sze Hui and Vivian Teh Qian Yuen

topped the rest o the world in the December 2010 ICAEW

ACA qualication examination and jointly took First Place.

Tay Jun Yin, who is currently employed with Deloitte scored

nine High Distinctions and eight Distinctions in the twinning

programme with Victoria University. Besides being a high

achiever, Tay is also actively involved in extra-curricular

activities. This bagged him the coveted CIMB Bank ECA

Achiever’s Award 2010. The ormer President o the SunwayCPA Australia Student Charter in 2010 also represented

Sunway in Taekwondo and won the MAPCU Taekwondo

championship in 2008. The list goes on.

On the ront cover o this edition o , A-Levels student, Lee

Kin Wai is currently studying at Cambridge University. Lee

scored the Highest Mark (joint) in the World or Mathematics

at AS Level and the Second Highest Mark (joint) in the World

or General Paper in the Cambridge Fellowship Awards

2010.

Pre-university Studies

At the pre-university studies level, Sunway College oers

grade 12 or matriculation programme options rom the UK,

Australia and Canada. These pre-university programmes

include:

• AUSMAT (Australian Matriculation)

• Cambridge GCE Advance Levels (A-Level)

• CIMP (Canadian International Matriculation Programme)

• MUFY (Monash University Foundation Year)

• Sunway FIA (Foundation in Arts)

According to Cheng Mien Wee, Director, Pre-University

Studies, the range o pre-university programmes has been

careully designed to suit the dierent learning preerences

o students, and to prepare them to enter their university o

choice.

“Depending on their career objectives and perormance at

school, our counsellors will be able to guide the students to

choose the right pathway,” she said. “This is why we always

encourage students to meet the counsellors beore choosing

a suitable programme.”

With some talented students, a proessional qualiication

is more suitable. “We would ask them to consider eitherCertiied Accounting Technician (CAT) or Certiicate in

Finance, Accounting and Business (CFAB) instead o going

through the pre-university programme route,” she added.

“These programmes are conducted by Sunway College

through its subsidiary, Sunway-TES.”

“Depending on their career

objectives and performance

 at school, our counsellors

will be able to guide the students to choose the

 right pathway.”

Professional Accounting Programmes:

  The award-winning Sunway-TES oers programmes

o study leading to the globally recognised ACCA

(Association o Chartered Certiied Accountant) and CAT

(Certiied Accounting Technician) proessional accounting

qualiications, as well as the Certiicate in Finance,

Accounting and Business (CFAB) and the ACA qualiication

o the ICAEW (Institute o Chartered Accountants in England

and Wales).

Its Executive Director, Teo Ee Sing said since Sunway-TESstarted in 1994, it has produced 96 world prize winners

since 1996. A total o 2309 students have graduated with

dierent proessional qualiications. “Many o them have

climbed up the corporate ladder,” he said. “We are proud o

their achievements. Learning does not end at convocations.

Our alumni know that in order to keep abreast with the latest

development in their proession, they have to continue to

develop new skills.”

Elizabeth Lee, who has been with Sunway College

since 1992, said although Sunway now has its own

university oering “home-grown” programmes validated

by Lancaster, a number o students still preer to pursue

twinning undergraduate and MBA programmes with oreignuniversities. “For that reason, Sunway College will continue

to develop in this direction.

Twinning & MBA programmes

Being one o the pioneers o the twinning and credit transer

programmes, Sunway College has oered many Malaysian

and international students the opportunity o obtaining well

recognised qualiications o oreign universities rom the

UK, Australia and the USA through studying at Sunway in

Malaysia.

Lee stressed: “Our long history o partnership with Victoria

University (VU) in Melbourne, Australia dates back to as ar

as 1994, where a strong academic partnership continuestoday, enabling us to oer the VU Bachelor o Business

and MBA twinning programmes. These have become

popular options that are well recognised

by employers and industry.”

Sunway College also oers a range o

well-established English language

proiciency programmes

that have been speciically

designed to equip students

with English language

and communication skills

necessary or academic

success as well asemployment and career

development.

  Throughout its history,

the College has provided

holistic education and

nurtured students to

be critical thinkers and

socially responsible

citizens.

Expansion

Although its main campus is located at Bandar Sunway,

Sunway College has a number o branches in other cities

such as Johor Bahru, Ipoh and Kuching. There is no reason

why the College cannot now replicate its success in other

third world countries.

“Although we have not ventured

aggressively overseas, whenever

the opportunities are there,

we will deinitely explore andreplicate our success in these

countries,” she said. “Success

is a journey, not a destination.”

said Elizabeth Lee.

Revolving funds

Sunway College and Sunway

University are part o the Sunway

Education Group and are wholly

owned and governed by the

Jerey Cheah Foundation. The

Foundation, which was launched

in March 2010 operates upon

the philosophy o its Founder,  Tan Sri Jerey Cheah, who is

passionate about giving back

to the community via education.

Sunway College channels

its surpluses in the orm o

scholarships and inancial

support to deserving students.

  A total o RM 66 million in

scholarships has been disbursed

to-date by the Foundation and its predecessor, Sunway

Education Trust Fund which was set up in 1997.

The Jerey Cheah Foundation champions the spirit o giving

back to society and believes that education transormslives. Every student and sta at Sunway College is able to

contribute in the same way by virtue o the simple act that

we are a part o the Sunway community.

“Learning does

 not end at the

convocation. Our

 alumni know

that in order to keep abreast with the latest

development in

their profession, they

 have to continue to

develop new skills.”

Homestay has always enchanted

tourists for many years. From April 15

to 17, Sunway College students had

the opportunity to participate in a homestay

programme at Air Manis Homestay in Sabak

Bernam.

The journey o this not-to-be-missed experience started

with a plan to stage a traditional wedding ceremony.

But, events took its turn and Sajid got himsel a ‘new

bride’ ater meeting a young lady rom University o

Malaya.

Sajid, our international student rom Aghanistan was

supposed to have taken a ellow student rom Thailand

as his wie. The entire mock-up o a Malay wedding

was the climax o the homestay, where 30 o our

international students, accompanied by three sta rom

the International Student Oice, lived with the local host

amilies to experience and appreciate the traditional

aspects o village liestyle.

The host amilies were generally riendly and had

provided good hospitality, with both host and

participants showing great mutual respect and positive

attitudes towards each other. The activities organised

included batik crating, canoeing, gamelan perormance,

traditional dance perormance, playing traditional

games (congkak , hitting the bee hives, sandal ighting,

kite lying and learning to weave ketupat.)

Participants ound the homestay programme at Air

“I chose ICAEW ACA because it is a prestigious accountancy qualiication that does

not only provide a solid oundation in accountancy, business and inance, but also

helps to enhance my analytical skills,” Teh said.

Kwong concurred: “Yes, the ICAEW provides a wide perspective o the business world,

 A time together

Band-Aid, a group consisting o A-Level students

at Sunway College, recently visited GOLD at 3C

Complex in Bandar Sunway.

During the visit, they managed to socialise and had un

with the students. They also organised activities or the

students that allowed them to experience a sense o

individual achievement and helped to urther build their

sel-esteem.

 Although the project was

done as part o a Moral

Studies assignment, it

turned out the GOLD

impact on the participants

themselves: the sheer

determination shown

by members o GOLD

in trying out new skills

despite their autism was

simply inspiring!

This project has provided the Band-Aid members with an opportunity to get involved in the

community through meaningu l work. It has also allowed the members to develop skills which

will be invaluable in their uture endeavours, such as those o organisation, communication,
