INSPECT and SBAC Item Types Prior to 2/4/14
• Selected response (SR)
– Non-Traditional Selected Response (NTSR)
• Constructed Response (CR)
– Short constructed response
– Extended constructed response
• Technology enhanced (TE)
• Performance tasks (PT)
2
ELA Item Types
• MC – Multiple choice, single correct response (MC=SR= back to MC)
• MS – Multiple choice, multiple correct responses (formerly NTSR)
• EBSR – Evidence based selected response
• ST/CR – Short text/Constructed response
• WR/CR – Written response
• MA – Matching tables
• HT – Hot text, select text and reorder text
3
Math Item Types
• MC – Multiple choice, single correct response (formerly SR)• MS – Multiple choice, multiple correct responses (formerly NTSR)• ST – Short text (formerly CR)
– Item type limited to specific targets within claims 3 and 4
• EQ – Equation/Numeric• MA – Matching tables• TI – Fill-in tables• DD – Drag and drop• HS – Hot spot• G – Graphing• GI – Graphing interaction
4
Multiple Choice (MC) and Multiple Choice Multiple Correct (MS)
• MC: Series of options from which the student must choose a correct response(s)– 4 Choices, 1 correct response
• MS (formerly NTSR): 3-8 choices– Possibility of multiple correct answers– All or nothing– Partial credit if assessing multiple skills
• EBSR: Two part items• Can measure one or more content standard(s)

Which lines of evidence from the second paragraph support your answer in Part A? Select all that apply.
A"One evening in early June, Jasmine and Mack
went for their usual walk."
Correct answer
B"They journeyed through Farmer Levy's
woods behind Jasmine's house."
Student(s) may not have realized that this sentence shows the physical
setting opposed to the time setting.
C "Summer was just beginning."Student(s) may not have realized that the question is asking about the
time of day and not which season.
D"The frogs and crickets rejoiced because the
sun was going to bed."
Correct answer
E
"Fresh breezes tickled the leaves and
pinecones that were floating in the chattering
creek."
Student(s) may have believed imagery of the setting would help support
what time of day the story took place. Student(s) may not have noticed
that this sentence does not support any time.
What time of day does the story take place?
A early morningStudent(s) may have thought the sun was just rising instead of setting.
B middle of the dayStudent(s) may have thought the events took place in the middle of the
day.
C duskCorrect answer
D midnightStudent(s) may not have realized that the passage mentions that the sun
was just setting.
Constructed Response (CR) Items
• Allows assessment of claims and targets that are of greater complexity
• Typically requires more analytical thinking and reasoning than a SR item
• Eliminate the “guessing” factor associated with typical SR items
• Administered during the CAT portion of the Summative Assessment*
• Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be used for scoring*
*Technology to do this does not currently exist
17
SBAC Constructed Response
• EQ: Equation/Numeric– Math only– Should be able to computer score
• ST: Short Text– Shorter answers, but length not specified– Looks to be one sentence to one paragraph
• WR: Written Response– Only writing standards– Not revising standards within Claim 2 (Writing)

Technology Enhanced Items (TE)
• SBAC says used when SR and CR items cannot produce sufficient evidence for mathematical practices
• SBAC’s hope is that the use of TE items on the Summative Assessment will encourage classroom use of technology as part of instruction
