About HKU SPACE

HKU SPACE is the Extension Arm of the University of Hong Kong. Its mission is to provide learning opportunities for personal, professional and career development. Since its establishment in 1956, over one and a half million people have enrolled on HKU SPACE courses. Annual enrolment now exceeds 100,000 each year.

Rules of progression for BSc programmes

For students who initially registered in or after 2011

• you can take up to four full new courses in a year.

• in your final year of study, you may take five new courses in your final year, provided you are not carrying a failed course.

• you may take a maximum of five courses at any examination period, in any combination of new courses and resits.

• in your first year of study through the Standard Route, you may only take 100 courses, unless you have received APL for two

level 100 courses and are therefore permitted to take level 200 or 300 courses.

Assessment

• Each full course will be examined by one three-hour examination paper.

• Each half course will be examined by one two-hour examination paper.

• The University of London examinations are held once a year in May/June.

• Examination registration will be held in December by Hong Kong Examination and Assessment Authority.

Tuition Courses at HKU SPACE

• Each HKU SPACE tuition course comprises a total of 54 teaching hours.• Classes will normally be held on weekday evenings and weekends which may include Sundays & public holidays.• The tentative start day of tuition courses is 26 September 2016 (Mon).

Revision Courses

• Revision courses may also be organised in Hong Kong. They are taught by teaching staff from the University of London, other

U.K. or overseas universities in March/April every year.

• Course fee for each revision course: HK$2,200 per course, which included one mock examination and four consecutive

lessons.

Applicants shall:1. be aged at least 17 years; and2. have 2 passes at GCE ‘A’ Level / HKAL + 3 further subjects at GCSE / GCE ‘O’ Level / HKCEE (grade C or above); or, 3 passes at GCE ‘A’ Level / HKAL + 1 further subject at GCSE / GCE ‘O’ Level / HKCEE (grade C or above); or 2 passes at GCE ‘A’ Level / HKAL + 2 further subjects at ‘AS’ Level; or 2 HKDSE Category A subjects at Level 3 or above and 3 further HKDSE Category A subjects at Level 2 or above; and3. possess a Pass in Mathematics at GCSE / GCE ‘O’ Level / HKCEE (not less than “C”) / HKDSE (Level 2 or higher); and4. have proof of competence in English accepted by the University (at least equivalent to a grade C in English Language at

GCSE/ GCE ‘O’ Level or a grade C in English Language (Syllabus B) at HKCEE, or Level 3 at HKDSE).

Note: There are many other qualifications, both from the UK and overseas, that the University of London accepts as satisfying the entrance requirements, e.g. HKU SPACE Higher Diplomas satisfy the entry requirements for the above BSc programmes

Students transfer to the BSc programmes from the University of London International Foundation Programme

Students of the University of London International Foundation Programme (IFP) may progress to the BSc programmes by ap-plying to transfer their registration, provided that they have passed all four full courses in the University of London International Foundation Programme.

For graduate entry, in addition to the qualifications listed above, applicants must hold a full first degree completed in a minimum of three years duration on a full time basis (or equivalent) from a university or other institution acceptable to the University of London.

Note: If applicant holds a professional and /or postgraduate qualification without a full first degree, he/she cannot be considered for admission to the Graduate Entry Route.

Each HKU SPACE tuition course comprises a total of 54 teaching hours (16 lessons)12 Weekday lessons 7:00-10:20pm (3 hours 20 minutes) &4 Saturday lessons 2:00-6:00pm & 7:00-10:00pm (7 hours), 2 consecutive lessons on 2 Saturdays.

Note:1. Courses in week A & B will be held every 2 week alternatively.

2. Students are not allowed to take more than one course from each week on the same day as class crush will be occurred.

3. Make up class(es) will be held on Sunday(s) and/or Public Holiday(s).

4. Please check the programme structure and the prerequisites before enrolment. Course Transfer fee HK$120 will be charged if

students would like to transfer from an enrolled course to another one (14 working days to process the transfer).

General Information

(1) Classes are normally held on weekday evenings and weekends (daytime and evenings), and may also be held on public holidays and Sundays. The courses are arranged according to the HKSAR non-office hours times.

(2) Typhoon and Black Rainstorm

For classes & examinations that have not yet started: If Typhoon Signal No. 8 or above or Black Rainstorm Warning signal is in force after the following times, classes and examinations will be

cancelled as indicated:

6:00 am Morning classes/examinations that start before 2:00pm 11:00 am Afternoon classes/examinations that start between 2:00pm & 6:00pm 3:00 pm Evening classes/examinations starting from 6:00pm For classes & examinations that have already started: When Typhoon Signal No 8 or above is hoisted, all classes should be immediately suspended but all examinations will continue until

the end of that examination session unless the examination venue is found to be of potential risk to candidates. When the Black Rainstorm Signal is in force, all classes and examinations will continue but all outdoor activities will be suspended.

(3) Unless a course is over-subscribed or cancelled, the course fees and repeating course fees are non-refundable. If the applicant is unsuccessful in the application, the applicant should note the refund conditions outlined in the course application form (yellow form).

(4) Fees and places are not transferable. Fees quoted in this brochure apply only to the intakes of studies specified within the brochure and may be subject to revisions even after admission onto this programme.

(5) If course refunds are granted, the refund procedures are normally four to six weeks and is subject to changes.

(6) Students may be required to produce their admission card to HKU SPACE staff outside the classroom or anytime during class and/or upon request.

(7) Students should check with the University of London’s prospectus to confirm their eligibility to enrol into the course, and to write the University of London’s examination.

(8) The School reserves the right to change the time, and/or place of course meetings and/or to change the course teacher should this be necessary, unavoidable time table changes which includes, time, date, venue of the courses, and the lecturer(s) are unavoidable. Such changes may cause clashes with other subjects listed in the timetable.

(9) The School may exclude a student from class if his/her behaviour disturbs the class or if he/she does not follow instructions in class or as laid down by HKU SPACE. Eating, drinking and smoking are not allowed in class and within the School Centres. Students should respect other students in the class and should oblige to the requirements of the class accordingly.

(10) Every care has been taken to ensure that the information contained in this booklet is accurate at the time of printing, but the course content is subject to continuing development and changed circumstances may necessitate cancellation of courses or alterations to the programme content. HKU SPACE reserves the right to make changes at any time, before or after a student’s admission. As much notice as possible will be given of any such changes, but neither the School nor programme team can accept any liability that arises out of, or in connection with them.

(11) Late applications will ONLY be considered at the discretion of the School.

(12) All fees are subject to change without prior notice.

There will be staff checking the attendance against receipts, students who cannot produce the original course fee receipt will not be allowed to enter the classroom.

General Notes to Applicants

1. Enrolment can be done in person at any of the School’s Enrolment Counters by completing this application form and submitting it with the appropriate fee and relevant documents. You can also mail to the “34/F,

United Centre, 95 Queensway, Hong Kong“ specifying “Course Application”

2. Fees paid by crossed cheque or bank draft should be made payable to “HKU SPACE”.

3. For general and short courses, applicants may be required to pay the course fee in cash or by EPS, Visa or MasterCard if the course will start shortly.

4. If admission is on a first come, first served basis and if you do not hear from us before the course starts, you may assume that your application has been accepted, and should attend the course as scheduled.

5. If admission is by selection, the official receipt is not a guarantee that your application has been accepted. We will inform you of the result as soon as possible after the closing date for application. Unsuccessful

applicants will be given a refund of programme/course fee if already paid.

6. If you do not know the teaching venue within 3 days of the starting date of the course, please check with the relevant programme team.

7. Course fees paid are not refundable except as statutorily provided or under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. course cancellation due to insufficient enrolment).

Notes to Non-local Applicants

To study in Hong Kong, all non-local applicants are required to obtain a student visa issued by the Immigration Department of the HKSAR Government, except for those admitted to Hong Kong as dependants,

who do not need prior approval before taking up full-time and part-time studies. Non-local applicants issued with a valid employment visa also do not need prior approval to pursue part-time studies. It is the

responsibility of individual applicants to make appropriate visa arrangements. Admission to a HKU SPACE academic programme/course does not guarantee the issue of a student visa. Applicants may wish to note

that part-time courses are generally not considered by the Immigration Department for visa purposes except for self-financed, part-time locally accredited taught postgraduate programmes awarded within the HKU

System through HKU SPACE.
