The names of Indian settlements from which native Californians weredrawn to supply the harvest of souls for the Franciscan missions foundedbetween 1769 and 1834 have long been of interest to California ethnog-raphers. They provide a record of original place names, and often themission books supply information which allows one to calculate the loca-tion and minimum population of certain villages.

Between 1860 and 1863, Alexander S. Taylor published, in the Cali-fornia Farmer and Journal of Useftl Arts, a very large number of villagenames recorded in mission registers. Taylor's lists contain -many errors,perhaps because he was a bad copyist, but possibly because typesettersin that day found it difficult to set the Indian words correctly from alonghand printer's copy. Taylor's lists were, for the most part, reprintedwithout emendation in the Handbook of American Indians (Bureau of AmericanEthnology, Bulletin 30, Vol. I, 1907; Vol. II, 1910) in brief articleslisted under the names of each of the twenty-one California missions.Hubert H. Bancroft, the great California historian of the last century,also printed long lists of village names which had been recorded inmission archives; and Maynard Geiger and Zephyrin Engelhardtf, the ablechurch historians, have done the same in their numerous books and articleson the history of individual missions.

The first significant utilization of these mission records w%as byC. Hart Merriam, who, in 1905, published (American Anthropologist, Vol. 7,594-606) a calculation of the aboriginal population of California. Merriambased his computation of total numbers of Indians on the Franciscan missionrecords, and concluded that the number was about 260,000. A. L. Kroeber,in his Handbook of the Indians of California (Bureau of American Ethnology,Bulletin 78,8J0-T91, 1925), made a new computation, and came up with thefigure of 133,000. In 1943, S. F. Cook (Tbero-Americana, No. 21) revisedKroeber's figure upwfard to 150,000, and in 1964 (Actas y Memorias XXXVCongreso Internacional de Americanistas, Mexico, 397-403) increased hisestimate to 250,000-300,000 souls, a figure quite close to that of Merriamsixty years earlier. In all of these calculations, the mission statisticswere utilized, although in different ways.

In 1919-21, C. Hart Merriam employed a research worker, Miss Stella R.Clemence, to search out the surviving mission registers and abstract thenames of villages and numbers and sex of persons from each. Miss Clemenceseems to have done a fairly thorough job, and her labors have left us, inthe Merriam Collection now deposited at the University of CaliforniaDepartment of Anthropology in Berkeley, a series of typewritten lists ofmission register abstracts. Some of the original registers have disappeared(whether permanently or not is unknown) and the Clemence abstracts of theseare therefore of great importance.

The rancheria (village) lists collected by Miss Clemence for MissionsSanta Barbara, San Luis Obispo, San Miguel, Santa Clara, and San Jose havealready been puiblished (C. Hart Merriam, Studies of California Indians,University of California Press, 1962, 188-225), and the lists publishedin this report constitute the balance of 'those in the Merriam Collection.They are presented here exactly as they appear in the typewritten copies.

The abstracts of the mission registers have many potential uses.Alan K. Brown (University of California Archaeological Survey ReportNo. 69, 1967) used the mission ;rillage lists as a primary source of informa-tion on Chumash population numbers. Brown (a. cit. 92) and R. C. White(University of California Publications in American Archaeology and Ethnologr,Vol. 48, No. 2, 106, 1963) feel that the village lists compiled by MissClemence are imperfect, but that her work is more accurate and completethan the "copies" made about ninety years ago by Alphonse Pinart which arenow in the Bancroft Library. One of the greatest difficulties in usingthese lists is in identifying orthographic variants. White (op. cit.106-107) and Brown (2p. cit. 15-16) discuss this problem. Only carefulanalysis by a competent linguist could identify the duplicated or variantrenderings in the lists, and thereby reduce the array of village names tothe minimum, or actual, number of sites.

Notwithstanding the probable imperfections in the present abstractsof mission registers, it is believed that their publication is a usefulcontribution to aboriginal toponymrv. Students wishing to use the missionbooks as a source of Indian demographic data will prefer, as d-id Brown,to consult the original sources.

The following list of rancherias is compiled [by S. R. Clemence] froma copy made by A. Pinart in 1878 of' the Book of Baptisms of San RafaelMission (Libro de Bautismos, Mision San Rafael). Pinart's copy includesthe dates of baptisms by years, the names of Indians baptized, and rancher-ias to which they belonged. Dates in Book of Baptisms run from 1818-1839.

The Pinart copy contains errors, and these have been corrected as faras possible by referring, in 1919, to the original record then in theSanta Barbara Mission.

Note: Ira' is abbreviation used in Book of Baptisms for 'rancheria.'Figures in ( ) after rancheria names indicate number of timesspelling occurs in Book of Baptisms; figures in ( ) afterdates, number of Indians baptized that year.

S.AN FRANCISCO MISSION

The following list of rancherias was compiled from records securedin 1919 from the Books of Baptisms of San Francisco Mission. The Booksof Deaths and the Book of Marriages of this mission contain no refer-ences to rancherias.

A separate list of rancherias was made ouit in 1918 from the "Padron"or Register of San Francisco Mission, an original untitled MS in the col-lection of the Bancroft Library.

This latter list gives more accurate information as to the nimberof Indians from the various rancherias, as the Book of Baptisms does notgive the name of the rancheria in many of its records. In the firstpart of the first Book of Baptisms, the rancherias are regularly recordedand information is often added as to location and tribe.

The following list of rancherias is compiled from records obtainedin 1919 from the Mission Books of San Carlos Mission. The list is madefrom the Book of Baptisms and additions given from the Book of Deathsand the Book of Marriages. All three books give rancherias in text andmargin for practically every record. There are records of over 3000Indians, covering dates 1770-1858. They were written by Father JuniperoSerra until his death in 1784.

The following list of rancherias is compiled [by S. R. Clemence]from a copy made by A. Pinart in 1878 of the Mission Books of Le SoledadMission. Pinart's copy includes

1. Scattering records from the Book of Baptisms and the Book ofMarriages.

2. Copy of Book of Baptisms begirming Nov. 23, 1791. Names ofIndians baptized and rancherias to which they belonged wereapparently copied in every case by Pinart, some 2800 recordsin all. Pinart says that in the original MSS the rancheriaoccurred twice in almost every case: in the text and in themargin. Where these spellings differed the spelling in themargin is given in ( ) in this list.

SAN FERNANDO MISSION

The following list of rancherias is compiled from material obtainedin 1919 from the first Book of Baptisms of San Fernando Mission, Cali-fornia. This record is at the Cathedral of St. Vibiana, Los Angeles, andis the only one of the San Fernando Mission books now in the possessionof the Church. One of the other books (either the Book of Deaths or theBook of Marriages) is reported to have been purchased in 1918 by Henry E.Huntington.

The Book of Baptisms is entitled 'Libro primero de Bautismos de laMisi6n del Seffor San Fernando Rey de Espana.' It contains 3,126 entries(including Gente de Raz6n), and is a continuous record from September 8,1797 to September 4I, 1855.

The following list of rancherias is compiled from records obtainedin 1919 from the Books of Baptisms of San Gabriel Mission and verifiedby records in the Books of Deaths and Marriages of the same Mission.The San Gabriel Mission records were beautifully written and are entirelylegible except for a few blurred pages in the Book of Baptisms. SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO MISSION

The following list of rancherias is compiled from material ob-tained in 1919 from the two Books of Baptisms of San Juan CapistranoMission and corrected from information in the Books of Deaths andMarriages of the same Mission.

Rancheria names for all records except the children of neophytesare given in the Book of Baptisms. In the Books of Deaths and Mar-riages there are a good many rancheria names, although the Indians areusually referred to by their baptism numbers.

The first few records, also an entire page in the Book of Bap-tisms, are missing; otherwise the records are in excellent conditionand very easy to read. The books are kept in a steel safe in thesacristy of San Juan Capistrano Mission and include the following:

SAN LUIS REY MISSION AND PATA

The following list of rancherias is compiled from records obtainedin 1919 from the 'Padron' [or Register] of the Mission of San Luis Reyand its subordinate chapel, San Antonio de Pala. This 'Padron' is keptat the Monastery of San Luis Rey and is the only known existing missionrecord of either of these two places. It is in good condition althoughit lacks title-page, date, and name of compiler. The records were keptseparately for San Luis Rey and Pala and the neophytes are listed alpha-betically in groups of married couples with children, widows, widowers,unmarried men and women. The place of the Indian's birth, his age, dateof baptism, and baptismal number are given.
