The 2016 Certified Organic Survey is a survey of all operations identified as having certified organic production. Certified

organic farms must meet the standards set out by USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service’s (AMS) National Organic

Program (NOP) and be certified compliant by an approved agent of NOP. Results from the survey provide acreage,

production, and sales data for a variety of certified organic crops and certified organic livestock.

In 2016, the United States had 14,217 certified organic farms that produced $7.6 billion in certified organic products.

Pennsylvania certified organic farms were 6 percent of the U.S. total, with 803 certified farms. Of the 93,418 acres of

certified land in Pennsylvania, 72,345 acres were cropland and 21,073 acres were pastureland/rangeland. Pennsylvania’s

total gross value of certified organic agricultural products sold, at $659.6 million, was 9 percent of the total gross value of

U.S. certified organic sales. The top two certified commodities sold in Pennsylvania were broiler chickens with sales

valued at $320.5 million and chicken eggs with sales valued at $120.4 million.

For more information on the 2016 Certified Organic Survey and related reports, please visit the NASS Organic
