Turn yourpassioninto yourprofession

Established for over 35 years, SSR has seen the industry grow, watched technologies evolve and been at the forefront of audio and creative education.

We have lead the way in music education where others have followed, and to this day we are proud to continue to do so with new exclusive industry focused degrees in film as well as games development.

Offering high quality education, as well as proudly sponsoring leading cultural and creative events that keep our links with industry fresh, SSR maintains a stellar reputation for providing professional training and expert graduates.

From two creative spaces in the UK - one in central Manchester and one in Camden, North London – we channel the energy of the creative industries to transform your passion into your profession.

Our studios in Manchesterand London

Each of our studio spaces in the UK house purpose built facilities with professionally active tutors. Both campuses enable us to offer the most up to date and relevant creative training in music, film and games and each manage unique creative partnerships.

Whether you study to degree level, or on any of the short to mid-range courses that we offer, we provide all our students with excellent career starting, and life changing education.

Our Manchester studiosBeginning life in 1980 – as Spirit Studios – and only five minutes’ walk from Manchester Piccadilly station, we keep ourselves abreast of industry developments and cultural events, and centre stage in the city’s thriving music, film and games industries, giving you the very best connections for successful employment.

Our London studiosBased in the old Collard & Collard piano factory, our studios are in the heart of Camden Town, a booming community and one of London’s creative hubs. The relationships we forge with the surrounding industry and the creative community bring key industry professionals to deliver guest lectures and seminars, as well as work placements and field trips.

Academic andaccreditation partnerships

We are very proud to have strong ties to a number of the UK’s leading universities, delivering degree programmes at both campuses. We work closely with our academic partners to ensure students get the best from the ‘student experience,’ as well benefitting from the services and standards that all university students can expect.

Additionally, we’re very proud of our highly respected accreditations as training centres from leading creators of industry essential technology, including Avid, Ableton, Apple, Steinberg, Native Instruments and Unreal Engine.

These partnerships provide excellent opportunities, including being the first education establishment in the UK to offer training on the Avid S6!

Workingwithindustry

Right at the very core of our philosophy is the belief that to train people for industry, you need to work closely with industry. We strive to build and expand our network of creative partners – companies with whom we enjoy a mutually beneficial relationship.

Our creative partners work with us in a number of ways. First and foremost they help us review our courses – keeping them current and relevant. They also offer placements and internships to students, and in many of our courses a period of work placement is embedded in the learning. Two of our students bagged internships filming wildlife in 3D in South Africa over the summer!.

Many of our partners regularly visit us to participate in guest lectures, or ‘in conversations’. Guests include record producer Steve Levine (producer of artists including The Clash and Culture Club);Jimi Goodwin (SUB SUB / Doves);Gordon Raphael (producer, The Strokes);Guy Garvey (Elbow); Marshall Jefferson (DJ);Maria Chavez (sound artist and DJ); and Martin Atkins (PIL, Killing Joke)

Another popular activity offered by our creative partners is field trips. Students get to go backstage at major concerts - including a session with the great film composer, record producer and Academy Award winner Hans Zimmer.

These events are open to students from all our courses, so everyone benefits, and in this new academic year even more exclusive talks are planned from the creative world of music, film and games.

Additionally, as one of only seven institutions with a special relationship with AMS Neve, our students get to visit the heart of the creative manufacturing process. Two of our students last year were even awarded the AMS Neve Award! Add to that, the visits to recording studios and film sets of major film productions, and exciting prospects planned for games in 2018 onwards, our students are in great company.

Careers andsupport

The creative industries, which includes film and games, is worth £85 billion a year to the UK economy. In the music sector, the live music industry alone is growing at the fastest rate, with almost 27 million visits made to live music events in the UK in 2014.

For most students, the SSR journey is a pathway to a career from their chosen subject choice, and the team here are dedicated to helping you navigate that path.

Our team is one of our greatest strengths, and without them we couldn’t realise our core vision.

We have many great tutors, technicians and engineers spread across both campuses who provide experience, passion and excellent training to all they teach.

As a result, our alumni network is vast, so whether you’re thinking about becoming part of our family, or you’re a current student, a recent graduate, or even if you studied with us 20 years ago, we’re happy to offer help and support in finding that dream job.

Proof of our success can be measured by the success of our students - it’s one of the things that we’re most proud of. It’s encouraging to know that our students are reaching the highest levels of achievement in the creative industries, where industry knows too well that SSR students are of the highest calibre.

Put simply, our reputation helps get our students working.

Understanding sound and having the spark to create something extraordinary is what our Sound Engineering and Design course is all about.

A good sound designer can apply their work to almost anything: music, adverts, theatre, games, radio, film and TV; whether you’re creating a new kick drum sound or creating explosions for a video game. The possibilities are endless.

We’ll start you off with the basic scientific principles and studio practice, and by the end of the course, you’ll be designing sound for games, mixing for film and TV, and recording and mixing for bands, both live and in the studio.
