UNC-DM enabled Judy Ward to do something that no one else

in the hospital could do for her twins - be a mother

(via the rocking gliders - she could hold them and love them

like no one else with the use of the gliders even when she

couldnrsquot do much of anything else for them)

Twent-four hours is a long time Imagine

spending 24 hours waiting for a doctor to

relieve our fears 24 hours listening to aheart monitor eep 24 hours watching our

neworn childrsquos chest rise and fall and 24

hours reathing and praing our childrsquos

reathing does not stop This 24 hour struggle

is the realit for the parents of aies in the

the Neworn Critical Care Center

This struggle often goes uninterrupted

as families cling to the their new children

ut not on Fridas At the end of theweek parents spend at least one hour

reprieving

From 12 pm to 1 pm the NCCC offers

a luncheon to the parents of newl orns

in the unit

The NCCC luncheons ldquogives [parents]

a reak outside the unit to talk to other

patients and professionalsrdquo and a safe

environment said Christine Wesolowski

a case manager in the Neworn IntensiveCare Unit

ldquoParents often donrsquot give themselves a

reak and some canrsquot afford to eat [at the

hospital]rdquo Wesolowski said

Estalished in 2007 this program is a

sounding oard for parents and is a place

where parents offer each other support

ldquoAll of us can empathize as professionals

ut we canrsquot know what it is like to

have a child in the unitrdquo said MelissaGass hospital coordinator for the Famil

Support Network

The purpose of the NCCC is to provide

life-saving intensive care to newornchildren NCCC staff sees a variet of

cases ranging from prematurit and

traumatic irth events to genetic defects

and other diagnoses The center allows

neworns to sta for as little as a da for

as long as two months and some special

cases sta for longer than that

Ultimatel ldquothe goal is to have the a

go homerdquo said Wesolowski

Originall funded the March of Dimes the NCCC has een looking for

funding for its support programs which

include scrapooking crafts holida

runches educational programs such as aCPR course

UNC Dance Marathon provided the

funding for these programs this ear

which ends in April

As NC Childrenrsquos Hospital continues to

serve the families of the NCCC it wants

to maintain a safe place for parents

ldquoM goal is to continue with programs

currentl in placerdquo said Wesolowski who

hopes to keep in touch with parents afterthe leave the hospital with their health

aies

Grants funded UNC Dance

Marathon have made a differencein NC Childrenrsquos Hospital

A grant that funded the salar

of a Spanish interpreter in the

hematologoncolog oor of

the hospital has allowed English

and Spanish-speaking families to

receive the same qualit of care

Interpreter Walter Armstrongrsquos

salar was funded UNC-DM

during 2010-2012 The hospitalhas realized how vital his services

are and are now funding his

position

ldquoWe couldnrsquot see our patients

without Walterrdquo said Dr Stuart

Gold head of the Pediatric

Oncolog and Hematolog

division ldquoIf we didnrsquot have a full-

time interpreter down here Ithink it would e ver safe to sa

that it would e ver difcult to

deliver care next to impossilerdquo

The Pediatric Palliative Care

program another UNC-DM funded

program has helped improve

qualit of life for patients

UNC-DM funded the salaries

and training costs for doctors and

nurses involved in the programIn the rst seven weeks the

saw 24 children Doctors and

nurses have also consulted for

decision-making support painand smptom management end

of life planning and health care

provider distress

ldquoFeedack from parents and

from health care providers has

een overwhelmingl positiverdquo

said Dr Elisaeth Potts Dellon

program co-director

ldquoM son was in so much painrdquo

said a mother of a child with ahematologic disorder ldquoIt seemed

like nothing was working And then

Diane a nurse practitioner came

along and now hersquos comfortalerdquo

An intensive care unit nurse also

noticed how the program helps

families ldquoI donrsquot know what our

team said to the mother ut shersquos

in a much etter place She canactuall make decisions nowrdquo

UNC-DM also funded emergenc

formula costs in the pediatric

genetics department In the

upcoming ear families of

patients with metaolic disorders

will fund the formula through a

enet walk

The hospital is looking forward

to new grants provided UNC-DM in the upcoming ear

Ten-ear-old ja has een a resident in a

pediatric long term care facilit in NC

Childrenrsquos Hospital for almost his entire life

He has complex medical needs including

cereral pals and severe developmental

delas As his respirator status has declined

the medical team has recommended hereceive a tracheotom to make reathing

easier His mom who moved from North

Carolina to Marland to e with her famil

and nd work hopes to have ja moved to

a similar facilit in Marland because jarsquos

momrsquos rst language is French the medical

team was not comfortale receiving consent

for the surger over the phone Instead jarsquosmom had to come to NC Childrenrsquos Hospital

to personall meet with doctors and give

consent because she is unemploed jarsquos

mom does not have reliale transportation

With help from the For the Kids fund the

residential facilit where ja lives and the

Clinical Care Management department at the

hospital agreed to split the cost of a train

ticket for jarsquos mom As a result she was ale

to get proper consent for her sonrsquos surger
