Welcome! Greetings from the Department of Dance! This handbook has been

compiled to provide information about resources, policies and procedures

for UNC Charlotte dance students. If you cannot find the information you

need here, be sure to ask your advisor and/or professors. It is important that

all dance majors and minors read the entire handbook and save it for future

reference.

Dance is a rigorous activity and we want you to take care of yourself! Ice is

available in the hallway between the dance studios for minor injuries. You

are welcome to consult the faculty for advice but you know your body best!

We encourage you to get adequate rest and consult a medical professional

for diagnosis and care of any injuries.

Please note that engaging in disorderly conduct in class, such as loud

aggressive or combative behavior that disrupts or interferes with the normal

Academic Information

ADVISING/ADVISOR: Your advisor will assist you with course selection, preparing each semester's schedule and planning the overall course sequence needed to complete your undergraduate degree. It is important to map out a semester-by semester plan for graduation at your first meeting with your advisor. Plan to meet with your advisor once every semester or any time academic counseling is needed. Be prepared with a tentative schedule when meeting with your advisor about registration-- you will also need to bring your General Education Requirements Worksheet, your Degree Requirement worksheet, and a list of courses you would like to take each time you meet with your advisor/get advised. After you meet, your advisor will remove your advising hold and you can register for classes. You may request career counseling and mentoring from any member of the faculty. Note: ALL STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO TAKE A MINIMUM OF 15 CREDIT HOURS PER SEMESTER IN ORDER TO EARN A BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN 4 YEARS. Students are responsible for their own progression and for acquiring an application for graduation.

The UCAE consists of six programs working in conjunction to attain a singular objective - to provide academic support services, programs, and resources that increase learning effectiveness, enhance student success and promote academic excellence. All services at UCAE are free to UNC Charlotte students The six programs offered are: Tutorial Services, Supplemental Instruction, Building Educational Strengths and Talents (B.E.S.T), The Learning Lab, Student Success, and Individual Consultations.

Students Obtaining Success (SOS) is a peer mentoring program for students on academic probation at UNC Charlotte. We realize that poor academic performance can have many different causes. This program is designed to help students identify those reasons and develop an action plan to improve grades and return to good academic standing.

Multicultural Academic Services consists of a variety of distinct programs collaborating to reach a singular objective: to provide academic support services that foster the recruitment, retention, and graduation of students, especially underrepresented students at UNC Charlotte. Services rendered include but are not limited to academic advising, academic issues workshops, peer counseling and tutoring, and personal counseling. Moreover, the office serves as a clearinghouse for information and referrals to other university resources and academic support services.

The University Career Center for Work, Service and Internships offers tons of programs and opportunities for students from Niner JobNet to multiple Internships and Service Learning Programs. Their mission is: to provide a comprehensive approach to career preparation and development with experiential learning as a key component resulting in an enhanced and engaged academic and life long career experiences for students.

The Counseling Center is a department within the Division of Student Affairs at UNC Charlotte. The Counseling Center, along with the Student Health Center and the Center for Wellness Promotion, is a component of Counseling and Health Services, an administrative unit whose primary goal is to provide wellness-related programs and services to UNC Charlotte students.

The Counseling Center is fully accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services, Inc., and our pre-doctoral internship program is accredited by the American Psychological Association. Our permanent, full-time staff consists of licensed and license-eligible psychologists and social workers with terminal degrees.

The Office of Disability Services (DS) is responsible for ensuring access to academic programs and campus facilities for individuals with disabilities. The Center includes computing facilities that integrate word processing, research, tutoring, and assistive technologies. In addition to its Web- based resources, the WRC houses a library of writing-related instructional materials. Consultation is available, on a limited basis, to support faculty in teaching writing across the curriculum. WRC staff also offer presentations and host workshops on such topics as avoiding plagiarism, documenting sources, peer response, and revision strategies.

Subject librarians provide research support to students and faculty to help them achieve their educational and academic goals. Subject librarians assist students at all levels with curriculum and research assignments. They are available in-person, online, and by phone for consultation on how to find and use the best information for research projects and academic assignments. Subject librarians are also available to assist faculty members by providing instructional sessions for their courses, being available in Moodle, and by the creation of course- specific resource web pages. Subject librarians provide assistance to faculty members in their own research endeavors and also serve as a link to collection development for academic programs.

To be considered for admission to the Graduate School at UNC Charlotte, applicants must complete a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university or its equivalent if not from the United States. Residential has a residential component requiring students to live together in the same residence hall, unless otherwise noted. To support UNC Charlotte’s commitment to student learning, the Learning Community Program seeks to enhance undergraduates' first year experience by providing all interested students dynamic, focused communities which promote growth and learning through curricular and co-curricular activities. There mission is to increase students’ academic success, learning, and engagement by creating communities of students and faculty/staff through common courses, curricular innovations and co- curricular activities based on a major, theme, or interest. A learning community is an academic program designed to meet this mission.
