He couldn’t be more excited to be hosting agroup of amateur actors from across thePeninsula in a play about freedom– onFree-dom Day, nogal. “He” refers to GavinWright, manager of the Collective Arts The-atre (CAT) in Bellville, and his guests andcolleagues are none other than the cast ofthemusicalFlag of Freedom, whichwill runon 27 April, or Freedom Day, and which iscentered around the French Revolution.“Isn’t it ironic? I didn’t realise the signifi-

cance of the opening day until I physicallylooked at a calendar,” Wright tells Tyger-Burger. The cosy little 95-seater theatre heruns in the heart of Boston in Bellville willplayhost to the 14 actors, most ofwhomhavenever been on a stage in their life.“Manyof the castmemberswill have their

first experience of live performance in Flagof Freedom. It is wonderful to work with agroup of people that are so eager and talent-ed.” They are 14 in total and from as farafield as Strand to Kraaifontein, BlueDowns, Delft and Edgemead, and their ef-fortswill be brought to life by the FreshThe-atre Company (FTC) in collaboration withthe CAT under Wright’s direction.Wright, practically lights up as he tells of

these special actors – hosting them is theculmination of all his efforts to get amateursfrom all over onto the planks and into thearts. “The FTC has been producing showssince 2001 and its aim is to offer a platformfor the amateur actor, singer or dancer toshowcase their talent,” says Wright.

“Flag of Freedom is no different. The castis amixture of the novice to the experiencedactor working in perfect harmony creatingthe unique look and feel for the production.”What makes the production even more

special, is that the youngest member is onlyeight years old,Wright says. “It is awonder-ful feel-good musical that is suitable for theentire family.” Wright invites all up andcoming talent to knock on the CAT’s doorand if his own energy is anything to go by,this musical will definitely leave a revolu-tionary light burning in all its attendees’minds after the final curtain call. The playwill run for only four days until 30April andopens on Freedom Day at 20:00.V Email Wright at collectiveartstheatre @gmail.comor on 083 764 5607, preferably via WhatsApp.

At least R300 000 was stolen from the Engengarage in Bonteheuwel last week during anarmed robbery.

However, officers of the City of CapeTown’s Law Enforcement arrested threesuspects involved in the incident which oc-curred on Tuesday 29 March between 07:00and 08:00 right next to their offices.

The City’s Mayco member for safety andsecurity, JP Smith, says the arrests followedas one of the officers was alerted to a suspi-cious group loitering in the vicinity of theEngen garage in Bonteheuwel.

“He sourced backup and just as the offi-cers arrived at the garage, five men camestorming out of the premises,” Smith says.

He explains that the officers gave chaseduring which one of the suspects opened fireon them. The officers returned fire and man-aged to catch up to two of the suspects.

One was found in possession of just overR20 000, while the other had about R2 500 onhim.

The public informed officers that a redFord Laser was involved in the robbery. Offi-cers traced the vehicle to Langa and with theassistance of the South African Police Servi-ces’ K9 unit, they arrested the driver and re-covered a firearm.

“At least four suspects are still on the run.The garage proprietor has indicated that atleast R300 000 had been stolen during the in-cident,” says Smith.

According to Smith this was “a very dar-ing robbery because our Law Enforcementbase is literally next door to the garage”.

He says the officers are to be commendedfor their quick reaction to the concerns ofthe public and also for putting their lives onthe line to catch those responsible.

Asingle mother from Ravensmead hasdedicated her life to help care and edu-cate the smaller children in her com-

munity through her daycare centre.Pamela Petersen, founder and principal of

Sunshine Daycare, started her crèche in2007 with only two children and now hasabout 135 children in her care.Through her crèche she has created em-

ployment for a number of young women in-

terested in teaching and has even assistedin getting them to study further.“I started this crèche because of my love

for children. This is my passion and whenI saw there was an opportunity to expand Idid it without having a cent in my pocket, but now I can say through the support of thecommunity and the councillor I am in amuch better position,” Petersen says. The crèche currently cares for children

between the ages of one and five years andas the number of children grow she givesstudents from the local colleges and univer-

sities the opportunity to intern at hercrèche.“We are not short of hands and experience

here. All the teachers are qualified or in theprocess of completing their studies. I makeit my duty to ensure they complete their in-ternship and help find them permanent em-ployment at schools or other crèche facili-ties,” Petersen explains. Her aim is to develop more daycare cen-

tres in the community and to provide train-ing to existing crèche teachers.“We must work together and if I can em-

power someone and help them I will do so.Sharing skills and knowledge is importantespeciallywhen it comes to childrenandcar-ing for them,” she says.Petersen recently launched a library a

community library at the crèche to encour-age the children to read, take a book homeand have their parents read it to them.“It did not take us long to put this all to-

gether and we made it a group effort. Weasked each parent to donate a book to the li-brary. In this way we all take ownership ofthis project. Everythingwe do herewe do to-gether and that is what we want to instil ineach child we care for,” she says. The library was officially opened last

week.Petersen says Dawn Kortjie a Ravens-

mead resident donated the cupboard andthrough this donation theynowhave a spacein the crèche dedicated to the library. The library is open toall in the community

App helpsto findbursariesThree entrepreneurs have created an

app to help school-leavers and Grade11s find the bursary suited to their

needs among 7000 on offer.SAScholar is the name of the app that

aims to empowerprimarily the youthbyas-sisting them to find and manage scholar-ship opportunities through a mobile appli-cation, enhancing their chances to gain en-try into tertiary institutions, says CurwynMapaling, one of the founding three.“With more than 7000 bursary entries on

the qualifications in our database, theSAScholar app makes finding bursary op-portunities as easy as one, two, three!” hesays.Mapalingadds theapphasmade theproc-

ess of finding a bursary easier by incorpo-rating bursarymatching as opposed to bur-sary searching.“Bursary matching is the process of

matching the right person to the right fund-ing opportunitywhile bursary searching isan ancient process of looking for fundingopportunities,” he says.“The app is designed in such a way that

students will enter their biographical in-formation and the qualification they arestudying for, in the process of creatingtheir own profile.“We will match them with bursaries

available at a particular university theychoose, or for all the South African univer-sities.The app launched in July last year and

the bursaries included are worth overR1 billion.“The ... app has helped thousands of

scholars to getmatched to bursary opportu-nities for universities in South Africa andthe company is looking to expand to FETcolleges and international universities.”V Visit www.sascholar.com,view the video onwww.youtube.com/watch?v=bHK02c4s, or visitwww.enca.com/media/video/appmakesiteasierapplybursaries or www.news24.com/Live/SouthAfrica/News/ThiswebapphelpsSAscholarsfindbursariesfortheirtertiarystudies20150701for more information.

With 15 000 participants last year, the orga-nisers of the Cape Town Cannabis Walkhope to grow the event to 45 000 this year.Organiser Jo Hout says the walk, now in

its 14th year, has been growing exponen-tially. Starting with only a handful of peo-ple in 2002 as “the only thing society coulddo to show support for cannabis legalisa-tion”, the walk saw 5000 participants in2014, Hout says. Hout says the increase inparticipation is due to a growing aware-ness among the public of the medicinal useof cannabis. “More studies and researchare being carried out on themedicinal ben-efits of cannabis and the USA has changedtheir classification of the drug. People areslowly being given the right kind of infor-mation.” Hout believes legalising the drugwould open up a range of natural treat-ments for illnesses such as epilepsy, can-cer, HIV and neurodegenerative diseases,as well as the treatment of pain and inflam-mation.“It’s a medicine that people can grow

themselves,” he says. “There are few sideeffects. If someone takes too much oxyto-cin, they’ll die. It’s impossible to ingestenough cannabis to die.” In addition tohemp crops being an alternative industryand boosting job creation, Hout believesthe income generated by taxing the drugwould benefit the economy.V The Cannabis Walk is on Saturday 7 May at 10:00,starting at the corner of Tennant and Keizersgrachtstreets. The City of Cape Town’s annual Gamesfor Older Persons was held last week atthe Green Point track. Here senior men

and women were afforded the opportunity todisplay their athletic skills in front of hun-dreds of spectators. Some of the sportingcodes that formed part of the challenge in-cluded duck walks, Jukskei and sprints. Atleast 1000 seniors citizens from across thecity took part. The aim of the games is to pro-mote healthy living and active ageing.

The University of the WesternCape and Implats developedSouth Africa’s first hydrogen fuelcell forklift and refuelling stationand unveiled the prototype inSprings last week.

The three-year project, whichcommenced in 2012, was a collabo-rative effort between Implatsthrough their Impala RefiningServices, Hydrogen South Africa(HySA) Systems, UWC and the de-partment of science and technolo-gy.

The prototype hydrogen fuelcell forklift and refuelling stationwas unveiled at its Impala Refin-ing Services in Springs.

Over the last three years, Im-plats funded HySA Systems a to-tal of R6 million towards the de-velopment of a fuel cell poweredprototype forklift and refuellingstation which has been in opera-tion since October 2015 within thedispatch area at the Base MetalsRefinery in Springs.

This investment is a result ofover a decade of continuous dis-cussions and negotiations be-tween Implats and UWC’s SouthAfrican Institute for AdvancedMaterials Chemistry (Saiamc),under the leadership of Saiamc’sdirector, Professor VladimirLinkov.

Linkov said with Impala Plati-num becoming a partner toSaiamc, UWC has achieved thelong-term goal of entering strate-gic research, development and in-novation partnerships with an ab-solute national leader in one ofthe pillars of energy generationfor current and future needs ofthe South African economy.

“This partnership is unique inthe national system of innova-tion, unparallelled by any otheruniversity laboratory or institutein South Africa,” he said.

Implats plans to use hydrogenfuel cell technology as its mainsource of energy for material han-dling and underground miningequipment.

The initiative involves build-ing local skills in the developmentof hydrogen and fuel cell productsand co-funding the development

of the prototype forklift and refu-elling station. Implats CEO Ter-ence Goodlace said developing aviable fuel cell industry in SouthAfrica has several advantages forthe country such as economic de-velopment, sustainable job crea-tion and social good. “As theworld’s largest platinum supply-ing region there is a guaranteedsupply of the metal as well as thepotential to increase in globalplatinum demand,” he explained, adding that the development and

implementation of this technolo-gy provides an important oppor-tunity for South Africa to play arole in reducing global green-house emissions, thus diminish-ing urban pollutants and contrib-uting to reduced health care costsand an improved quality of life.

Over the long term, Implatsplans to fast-track local manufac-turing of fuel cells and the associ-ated components within a pro-posed tributary Special EconomicZone in the Springs region.

The company’s longer-termstrategic investments include ex-ploring a carbon neutral fuelsource for its operations, and par-ticipating in collaborative effortsthrough the Impala Roadmap todevelop fuel cell technology todrive knowledge-based skills de-velopment and job creation, andto increase foreign direct invest-ment in South Africa.

Meanwhile Dr Cordellia Sita, director of HySA Systems, saidthat fuel cell powered forklifts aregaining significant tractionworldwide and are now enteringmainstream commercialisation.

However, the limited availabili-ty of refueling infrastructure, coupled with the challenge offinding the most appropriate on-board hydrogen storage technolo-gy remains a big challenge.

“Through this demonstrationproject, HySA Systems has ad-dressed both challenges throughthe use of a novel metal hydridematerial for both hydrogen com-pression and storage,” Sita said.

The Minister of Science andTechnology, Naledi Pandor, notedthat South Africa had started tomake a number of bold moves thatcould see the country leapfrog in-to being a leading hydrogen fuelcell technology industrial hub.

“A forklift may appear to be asmall move, but great industrieshave developed from smallmoves,” she said.

Professor Frans Swanepoel, deputy vice-chancellor for Re-search and Innovation at UWC,said if fuel cell forklift develop-ment is to take-off, “UWC is happyto play a part in that”.

UWC instrumental in fuel cell technology

The world's first fuel cell forklift and refuelling station was unveiled at Impala Refining Services in Springs lastweek which was headed by UWC. Minister of Science and Technology Naledi Pandor attended.

Booswigte nou veilig toegesluitMICHELLE LINNERT

@linnertmb

Dit was toe nie die bosslapers self watWelgemoed so onder die inbrake laatdeurloop het nie, maar ’n groep inbre-

kers wat hulle onder die haweloses tuisge-maak het. Nou is dié booswigte agter tralies.

Hy was nie heeltemal verkeerd nie, soos

toe later bewys is.Maj.

Dié twee is daar gearres-teer.”

A student from Bloubergstrand who studiesat UWC in Bellville found an unlikely sur-prise under his car’s hood when he stoppedat a garage to fill up.Spiro Kostiris’s mother, Gina, told Tyger-

Burger the tale of the little cat thatwas foundnestled among her son’s car parts at a fillingstation in Bellville when Spiro stopped tohave the car’s oil and water checked.“We don’t know if she climbed in at Blou-

berg whenmy son went to varsity. He askedthe garage attendant to check the oil andwa-ter, and there she was, tucked into the en-gine,” Gina said.“She was terrified – they had to fish her

out from deep within the engine, but by thetime she got home, shewas calm and as soonas she was fed she was sweet and adorable.“Who knows how long she was in there

for? We don’t know if she maybe climbed inat varsity, but she was just bathed andwashed and smelled beautiful. We thoughtshe might belong to one of the lecturers.“She immediately came and cuddled in

and she’s well-trained, because she did herbusiness in the kitty litter. Obviously some-body loves her,” Gina added.Gina posted pictures of the cat on Face-

book in the hope of finding her owners. The beautiful feline specimen that looks

like shemighthave someMaineCoon inher,is currently in tiptop shape, saysTheaOden-daal from the Bergzicht Animal Clinic inEden on the Bay.The cat was taken there by the Kostiris

family last Thursday after Spiro found her.Gina would have kept the cat, it seems,

had it not been for her ownpet, Lucy, aGreatDane, wanting to “have her for snackies...”Gina joked online.“They ‘spoke’ through a glass partition

and is wasn’t a very friendly conversation,”Gina said.In the meantime, since the owner has not

been found, Thea says a family has showninterest in adopting the furry beauty, nownamed Dusty – “because she looks like she’sbeen rolling around in the dust”.Her health is also exemplary, Thea said.“She looks really, really good. She’s also

doing very well. She’s spayed, she has nofleas, she is friendly and not underfed.“She also had on a lovely red collar,” Thea

said. It is not known if Dusty is chipped.V Do you perhaps know Dusty or her human parents?Give TygerBurger a call on 021 910 6551, or contactthe clinic on 021 554 5877.

Perfect Cape Town weather, close racingand a fair share of controversy were allpart of the script at Killarney’s openinground of the 2016 South African NationalKarting Championship, but the weekendwill likely better be remembered for thefact that local drivers proved totally domi-nant.According to a press release by WPMC

Kart Club, Western Province MotorsportClub karters Julian van der Watt, DinoStermin, Sebastian Boyd, Joseph Oelz andCharl Visser each won one of the five na-tional categories thatmadeup themeeting.Local racers also won thirteen of Satur-

day’s fifteen races andwithmost classes of-fering their champions a seat in the RotaxMaxWorld Finals in Italy in October, Capekarting once again started the season on ahigh note.Killarney is well-known as a hard nut to

crack for visiting karters and Saturdayproved no exception with three of the win-

ners unbeaten over the weekend, but thisyear saw a local lad coming out on top ofthe fastest Rotax DD2 shifter class too forthe first time when Formula Ford fron-trunner Julian van der Watt (Kosmic)came from behind each time to beat SADD2 champion and Jozi Polo Cup racerBradley Liebenberg (Birel) and Mastersclass winner, Port Elizabeth’s multiple SAProduction Car champion and GTC racer,Michael Stephen.Another Cape driver and VW Polo Cup

racer Umpie Swart (Birel) was fourth inDD2 fromDurbanite BenjaminHabig (Ton-yKart), formerWP champ JonathanThom-as (Partners CRG), Bloem driver Justin Al-lison (Tony Kart) and Tristan de Nobrega,Robert Whiting and Michael Buchholzrounding off the top ten.The open age group 125cc Rotax Max

Challenge is one class where Cape drivershave regularly dominated over the yearsand this year was no exception. Reigning

SA Junior Max champion Dino Stermin(Kosmic) overcame a difficult first heat totake two hard-fought wins to take overallhonours for the day.Although it was no walk in the park, Se-

bastian Boyd (Kosmic) made no mistakesen route to three fine racewins and a domi-nant maiden national high school 125ccJunior Max victory over local rival DanielDuminy who drove a characteristicallysteady weekend to bring his Kosmic home.In second place was Johannesburg driverBlaine Rademeyer (Birel), Worcester ladJP Hamman (Kosmic), Mozambican KarlPitzer (FA), Durbanite Dominic Lincoln(Tony) and local lad Andrew Rackstraw(Tony).Cameron O’Connor, Storm Lanfear and

Jason Coetzee rounded off the Junior Maxtop ten, but Coetzee, who was second toBoyd in the first and third heats, was partyto a controversial second heat last lap thatsawhimexcluded from that heat andDario

Busi, who had ledmost of that heat exclud-ed for the day for their parts in some ques-tionable last lap race two tactics…Theremay have been just one Cape driv-

er on the other primary school 60cc MiniRok grid, but that did not prevent wildcardCharl Visser (Zanardi) from winning it.Visserwas first home in all three races, butwas docked five places for a startline in-fringement to handKwandaMakoena (FA)a rare out of town victory in the finale.Visser’s Mini Rok win was however all

the more impressive considering that hebounced straight back to win the secondMini Rok race immediately after being sig-nificantly shaken up when thrown fromhis kart in a hefty second race Maxteinocrash. Now all that remains to be seen isif Cape Town’s karters can continue todominate the national races away fromhome. The second round of the SAnationalkarting championship follows in Port Eliz-abeth on Workers Day 1 May.

BASEBALL: SENIORS AND YOUTH TAKE BACKTOBACK NBC VICTORIES

WP makes clean sweepSEAN CAMPBELL

After annexing their 17th senior nation-al baseball championship (NBC) lastweek, all of theWesternProvince (WP)

youth teams proceeded to win gold in theirdivisions over the last week.Western Province have nowmade it back-

to-back clean sweeps of the South AfricanBaseball Union’s (SABU) senior and youthNBCs after alsowinning gold in all divisionsin Boksburg last year. The seniorWPA side conquered all before

them as they registered no fewer than fiveshut outs whilst drawing one game to Gaut-eng u.23, which was rained out. WP A beatWP u.23 10-0 in the semi-finals and facedGauteng A in the final after Gauteng A beatWP B 9-2 in their semi-final.The final was played in horrendously

windy and rainy weather, which did not al-low for good baseball. The weather favouredGautengAas it stifled theWPApowerhousebatting line-up. Both teams were taken offthe field twice due to persistent rain. On thesecond occasion, at the top of the ninth in-nings, umpires called the game off with WPA leading 7-0. As the innings was incom-plete, the official score stood at 5-0, as it wasat the bottom if the eighth innings. The pitching duo of Jared Elario and Carl

Michaels stood out, with Brett Willemburgand Darren Wedel shining with the bat.WP u.18 A beat Gauteng A 10-0 in the final

of the junior championship. Jarrod Willi-ams pitched a sublime game and was wellsupported by his fielderswho turned a beau-tiful double play in the sixth inning. Willi-ams pitched six innings, conceding five hits, twowalks and fanned two hitters. Hewas re-placed by Brandon Smith who recorded thelast three outs.

Brandon Gehlig (2 for 2), Haydon Matter(2 for 3) and Kyle Ripepi (2 for 4) were thestandout hitters for WP u.18 A.Gauteng A beat Gauteng B 6-3 and WP A

beatWPB 9-2 in their respective semi-finals.In a tightly contested final for u.15s, WP

A beat Gauteng A 5-1. Both teams utilisedthreepitchers eachbut itwasWPAthat tookadvantage of the errors and walks given upby Gauteng A. Just when Gauteng A werethreatening, WP A turned a double play to

keep them scoreless in that innings.WP A beat Gauteng B and Gauteng A beat

WP B in the semi-finals.After losing to Gauteng A 11-10 in the

round robin, WP A beat them 5-3 in an excit-ing u.12 final. The young boys of the tourna-ment had everyone on the edge of their seatsin an awesome display of skills at this youngage. Both teams did very well and gave agood account of themselves.Western Province Baseball dominance is

good for the region, but definitely not goodfor South African baseball. One would havethought that Gauteng Central, Eastern andNorthern have consolidated into one unitthat would wrestle the dominance and tro-phies away from Western Province.Other regions to have participated in the

tournament were KZN, Mandela Bay, Eden,Cape Winelands and Zimbabwe. Some re-gions entered more than one team per divi-sion.

A victorious Western Province u.18 A side completed a clean sweep of titles for all Western Province teams at the national baseball championshipin Chukker Road after two weeks of action.
