Mouldy and rotten food meant for pigs is being sold in your communities. The story starts at the Clover dairy factory in Bellville who entrusted a recycling com- pany to remove its waste products. But instead of carting the waste away to designated pig farms as per their contract with Clover, it is believed the recycler takes the products, “spruces them up a bit”, and sells them to these communities. “I would like to stay anonymous for my own safety,” the whistle-blower requested of TygerBurger. The source claims the recycler and his gang scrape mould off rotten cheese and re- package “old” milk, custard and yoghurt in bottles. They also use paint thinners to remove the sell-by and manufacturing dates from some of the other items they resell. The items are then sold to smaller retail- ers and end up all over the Cape Flats, in- cluding Bonteheuwel, Belhar, Delft, Atlantis and Mandalay, according to the source. Products from elsewhere, including “slimy viennas”, russian sausages and even bacon, are simply washed and sold. Rotten items “People need to be made aware that they’re buying pigs’ food. The stuff is sold at very low cost. A block of cheese which would retail for R60 in a store, is sold for as little as R20 to R40.” The source says pallets with the rotten items in large blue drums were removed from the Clover premises in the evenings. The standard practice would require the re- cycler to simply cart the drums away to the farms. But in a sly twist, they disguise the solid dairy items under the liquids and make off with these illegally. “Old feta cheese or milk is thrown atop the other products so the security guards who check the drums cannot see what’s on the bottom,” the source says. “Bags are added to the drums so the secu- rity doesn’t damage the goods if he pokes a stick into the drum.” Contract reinstated From there the drums are transported to Atlantis or Mandalay, where the contractor has waiting buyers, the source says. “The rest of the men then take their drums to their own buyers where the contents are sold via trolleys or at railway stations.” Email correspondence provided by the source shows that Clover was alerted in Jan- uary. The correspondence shows Clover subse- quently summarily ended the contract at the end of February. However, the source said the contract was reinstated in May. “I am unsure whether Clover is aware that the men have since started working again.” A blue drum and its contents are sold at R1000, the source says. “Clover takes the disposal of waste productsvery seriously and has strict guidelinesaround the disposal of food stuff and recy-cling of packaging. These processes are re-gularly audited,” he says.

“In terms of the processes, waste productsare decanted prior to disposal and the origi-nal packaging is recycled.

“At our Cape Town branch, Clover has anarrangement with a local pig farmer interms of which only decanted liquid waste(that is, milk) may be collected in bulk con-tainers for stock feeding purposes,” he says.

“Further to your enquiry we have investi-gated the claims and have verified that thisprocess has been adhered to. Any evidenceto the contrary will be investigated and ac-ted on appropriately.”

The City’s mayco member for health, Siy-abulela Mamkeli, said his office’s Tyger-berg sub-district had not received any com-plaints about the disposal or resale of wastefrom Clover.

“I would encourage any member of the pu-blic to come forward and provide informati-on should they have any concerns of this na-ture,” Mamkeli said.

He adds the City can take immediate acti-on where it is found food safety has beencompromised in terms of food legislation.

“No person is allowed to sell foodstuffsthat are contaminated or impure. The legis-lation makes provision for legal action to betaken where evidence exists,” he says.

Mamkeli explains that “waste” refers notonly to products that have reached theirsell-by dates and that mostly retailers’ foodwaste ended up at landfill sites.

“Some food waste does, however, go outwith the normal waste removal. It remainsa good practice to look at the date of durabi-lity on products and, if consumers see thatit is beyond the date, advise the retailer.”

Mamkeli adds that stock rotation is alsoimportant, as was buying from a reputableretailer. He advises to “avoid fly-by-night

retailers”.“If foodstuffs are offered at unbelievably

low prices, be extra cautious. If containersare leaking or dirty, if labels are faded, orif it appears that the date marking has beentampered with, report this to the nearestEnvironmental Health Office,” Mamkeli ad-vised.

Political party representatives are target-ing the elderly to join their parties – withthreats.

The office of the regional land claimscommissioner says it has recently re-ceived complaints from prospectiveclaimants that political party officials aretelling people that if they join a particularpolitical party they will get their landclaims settled.

Making the elderly join political partiesto have their claims settled is said to beprevalent in Nyanga, Langa, Elsies River,

Khayelitsha, Atlantis and Salt River. Most of the complaints came to the of-

fice in Mowbray. There are also complaints that scam-

sters are posing as officials of the commis-sioner and charging people R50 to attenda meeting.

It is alleged these party officials also askthe victims for their documentation, which they promise to take to the officeon behalf of the claimants.

Michael Worsnip, chief director forland restitution support in the WesternCape, says this is not the way they workand that the claimants are being seriously

disadvantaged.“I want to emphasise that the commis-

sion on restitution of land rights is a com-mission of government. It is not answera-ble to individual political parties. Ourmessage to all claimants and prospectiveclaimants is that you do not need to belongto any specific political party, and peoplecan lodge a claim even if they do not be-long to any political party,” he says.

“The commission would like to appealto all prospective claimants not to fall vic-tim to these bogus officials, who are mak-ing demands for prospective claimants tojoin political parties,” he says.

Delft cops came under fire in the earlyhours of Sunday morning, with an officerwounded in the incident.

At about 03:50 officers were on patrol inthe N2 Gateway settlement in Delft whenthey noticed an unknown suspect roam-ing along Leeu Street.

As they stopped to confront the suspect,he started shooting at the officers, the firstshot hitting the driver’s side door post ofthe vehicle, the second smashing the win-dow and as the third shot hitting the 37-

year-old driver in the left leg.The suspectmanaged to escapewhen of-

ficers returned fire and they retrievedthree spent cartridges on the scene.

The wounded officer was treated on thesceneand transported to amedical facilitywhere he underwent an operation.

Fortunately the other two officers es-caped injury and the police are investigat-ing charges of attempted murder and ma-licious damage to state property.

In other crime-fighting operations Delftstation commander Brigadier HendrikJansen praised his officers for arrests andseizures last week.

Jansen said his staff seized 110 parcelsof dagga, 192 stops of dagga, 92 mandraxtablets, 103 sachets of tik, 160 bottles ofbeers, two firearms and ammunition.

“Other items recovered included a sto-len Ford Bantam bakkie, three Star SATDecoders, two CD players, a Sony DVDplayer, anassortment of knives andR4 000cash from at drug outlets,” he said.

“During the operations 104 suspectsaged between 18 and 52 were arrested fordrug possession, illegal possession of fire-arms and ammunition, possession of sto-len property, illegal sale of liquor and thepossession of dangerous weapons.”

Delft cop injured after coming under fire

Belhar police have been hard at work withOperation Fiela, a multi-disciplinary andinter departmental government operationthat was launched earlier this year to crackdown on crime.

Belhar acting station commander Cap-tain Herman de Jager said four people werearrested during raids in Chestnut Place onThursday.

“This operation saw authorities confis-cate tik, mandrax powder, a replica fire-armand a stolen cellphone,” said de Jager.

“This operation focused on ChestnutPlace where various departments gatheredbefore proceeding to search identified gangoutlets.”

De Jager also said therehadbeenadrastic

increase in street robberies along Stellen-bosch Arterial.

“There were also incidents where peoplewere followed after theywithdrewmoney atthe petrol station in Belhar Drive.

“There is also an increase in crime in theBanjolags area and Old Belhar in EricaDrive, where occupants in an Uno and awhite Toyota jumped out of the vehicle androbbed pedestrians at gunpoint.”

He is also concerned with the continuinggang violence in Belhar between the UGKGang and Sexy Boys.

“Another gang, theMalboys, is also activeagain in Anreith Road but we are using afocused approach against the leader of theMalboys and his followers.”

Operation Fiela hits hard

An upgrade is in the pipeline for an in-formal settlement in Ravensmead.

Construction on the City’s Ravens-mead Park is now in the planning and de-sign phase andwill ultimately see residentsreceiving improved structures that arewarmer in winter and cooler in summer.

Formerly known asWendy Park or SweetLips, this small informal settlement is locat-ed off Florida Road, between 14th and 16thStreets, in Ravensmead.

It is envisaged that 51 units will be con-structed inRavensmeadParkwhichwill ac-commodate the beneficiaries residing in theinformal settlement as well as those resid-ing in theneighbouringAppelboord inform-al settlement.

The residents will be relocated in fourphases, as per the sequence of completionof the phases.

“Weare changing the lives of these benefi-ciaries for the better,” said the City’s May-oral Committee Member for Human Settle-ments, Benedicta van Minnen.

“When the development is completed, they will have 1:1 services, space to expandtheir homes, and there will be communityfacilities and safe spaces for children toplay. I urge the community to work with us

so that we can ensure that progress is madepossible.”

The units will be made from a galvanisedcold-rolled lightweight steel-framed struc-ture clad with colour-bonded sheeting ofsimilar material.

Each will have a concrete raft foundationwith floor space of 26 m² in size, including

a sealed off toilet and washing cubicle. All inside walls and ceilings of units will

be clad with ‘bubble foil’ insulation compli-ant with the SANS 428 Fire Regulations.

Further insulation through the applica-tion of ceramic-based thermal insulatingpaint on the roof structure will be suppliedto all dwellings.

Childhood dreams should never die. That is the motto of Abegail Swartz from

Bonteheuwel who has just passed her firstTrinity exam in piano, making a childhooddream come true.In some small way the Tygerburger

played a part in her triumph because it wasseeing a story about the music classes of-fered by Ronald Wessels in Bishop Lavisthat spurred her to take the bold step to fol-low her dream.Wessels is very proud of his student’s

achievement.“Abegail is an inspiration in our commu-

nity for those who lose sight of theirdreams,” he said.“She’s a single workingmother and start-

ed her journey intomusic about three yearsago. Shemade the time to be here afterworkand I was immediately struck by her enthu-siasm and passion for music which helpedher progress tremendously.“She was a bit scared of the exams initial-

ly but I persuaded her to take the TrinityCollege London exam and the positive re-sults has boosted her confidence tremen-dously.”The harmonic chords of the piano flow

through the modest home in Apricot Streetas Abegail explains howmuch this achieve-ment means to her.“I was very nervous when I started les-

sons,” she said.“But every week when you learn a piece,

you practice it and you just fall in love withthe music that you make and want to im-

prove - that is when I knew I made the rightdecision.“I want people to know that it is never too

late to find your dreams. Playing the pianohas been mine since I was a child but therewas never the chance, the money, to do it.”Wessels concludedby adding that the con-

Learners at Elsbury Primary in Ma-troosfontein are making news to be inthe news.

The school, turning 67 this year, just cele-brated the first edition of its first schoolnewspaper andhasplans to growbyproduc-ing an edition every quarter.Dillan Davids, an intern from the West-

ern Cape education department at theschool, who is also a former pupil, startedthe project when he was approached by agroup of learners who became the newsteam. He is part of the Youth PAY Project 2015

which undertakes teacher assistance, ad-ministration, health and nutrition, re-source management, as well as manage ex-tra-mural activities.“I was surprised but very happy that this

initiative came from them,” he said.“They wanted me to assist them because

they wanted to have a way of expressingthemselves and provide information to theschool, community and their parents.“This is how the Elsbury Extra came into

being and our first edition became a hit inthe local community. So much so that wehad to print more copies.”Since starting there has been positive

support from the staff at the school who feelthat such a project promotes literacy. They have now been assigned a special

room as their newsroom where they meetand plan future projects.“There’s no stopping these learners

now,” says Davids.“We’ve held a workshop to discuss how

we are going to grow and are working ondigitising the newspaper to get a wider au-dience across social media.“The school’s first website [www.elsbur-

yps.wix.com/elsbury-primary] has alsobeen created as a way to share the news ofthe school to a wider audience as well asformer learners.”While the learners are enjoying the fun

side of gathering news, the news team re-gards the effectiveness of the newspaper asa top priority because of the poor literacyamong South Africans.“Some of our learners who are part of the

newspaper started at the school with noability to read or write, but working on thepaper motivated them to improve their lit-eracy skills,” said Davids.“For our future growthwe are looking for

partners to help us grow the paper. Here weare calling on former learners to come onboard and make a difference at the school.”Former learners can contact the school

via the website.

Tygerberg is the sub-district hardest hitby ongoing vandalism, burglaries andthe impact of gang violence at health

facilities says City mayco member forhealth, Siyabulela Mamkeli.

Mamkeli said moneyspent on damagesand security could make a major differenceto primary health care facilities.

The health department has allocatedR10,6million for security at health facilitiesin the eight sub-districts in this financialyear. This is R2m more than last year.

“Some of our facilities are really takinga battering at the hands of vandals and cri-minals and security therefore continues tobe a big headache,” said Mamkeli.

“It is a sad day when our clinics start re-

sembling prisons. This is not the ideal envi-ronment for staff or clients and the realityis that increased budgets do not account forthe emotional toll on the people who workin the clinics or use the facilities. We arestruggling to retain staff in some areas andfill vacancies in suburbs considered high-risk. This impacts on service delivery,” hesays.

Apart from the increased budget, thehealth department will also liaise with thesafety and security directorate about guar-ding facilities, as well as investigate howthenewly launchedStabilisationUnit couldassist in high-risk areas.

In addition, the directorate is prioritisinginterventions to address staff morale.

as they are often without basic facilitiesdue to vandalism at the school,” said Pub-lic Affairs and Corporate Communications

Manager at PenBev, Denise Behrens.“As educating our youth is vital in devel-

“When you’re born a certain way, I don’tthink there’s really any other careerchoice.”That’s why Bellville comedian Jaryd Pil-

lay decided to pursue a career in stand-up.The 19-year-old has just won the first

#ThatsFunny Comedy Showdown, a compe-tition specifically for up and coming comicsliving in the northern suburbs.Jaryd says he seems to see life differently.

“You need to tell someone, I suppose. Youneed to find a way to express yourself.”As an introvert, Jaryd didn’t grow up

dreaming of being a comedian, but towardsthe end of his high school career at FairmontHigh, he started coming out of his shell. He took part in the school’s pageant and

he needed to come upwith something for thetalent part of the competition. “At that point

I didn’t know thatmuch about stand-up.” Hegave himself a crash course by watching thelikes of Trevor Noah and MarcLottering before visiting the In-dependent Armchair Theatrewhere he got enough inspira-tion to put together a set for thepageant.

Defying stereotypesUsing a dancer friend and In-

dian music as props, Jaryd, kit-ted out in a turban, had every-one believe he was going to doan Indian dance routine beforewhipping a microphone out ofhis pocket and joking abouthow racist the audience werefor a assuming he’d play into astereotype and continuingwith his stand-uproutine.“They all loved it,my schoolwas very sup-

portive.” After his successful debut Jarydstarted becoming a regular face on stage at

The Armchair’s comedy nights.“I think I’ve been doing stand-upever since.”As an “Indian guy” who says

he’s very far from Indian tradi-tions, Jaryd says he thinks asSouth Africans we are all blend-ing into one culture. “It’s likewe’re trying to find out wherewe belong.”His comedy explores themes

of “cultural displacement”, liketalking about being an Indianman growing up in anAfrikaanscommunity, for example.Jaryd has already shared the

stage with big names such asStuart Taylor, Rob van Vuuren and MarcLottering and performed at Rocking the Dai-sies last year. Hewas also chosen to perform

at the Savanah Newcomer Showcase in Jo-hannesburg during the Comics’ ChoiceAwards. When he isn’t cracking jokes, Jaryd is a

BA live performance student at AFDAwhere he is studying stage and screen act-ing, works as an MC at GrandWest Casino. He has been performing with the #Thats-

Funny Comedy Showdown organiser JoeEmilio for awhile already, so itwas onlynat-ural he entered the competition.“Everyone brought their A-game,” Jaryd

says of his competitors, specifically pointingout Chantal Venter, who he says has lots ofpotential. He was also impressed with the crowd

turnout at the finals held at Meraki in Dur-banville and says it’s great that the comedyscene is growing in the northern suburbs.“It’s nice to see people supporting comedy.”V Jaryd is available for MC bookings. Email jarydpil[email protected] to contact him for more information.

The most powerful words cancome from the darkest timesand places and now an aspir-

ing writer from the flats of Uitsigin Elsies River is ready to share hismessage of victory to the world.

Sylvester Pretorious has lived inCedar Court in Uitsig Avenue allhis life. The area is notorious forthe varying aspects of crime in thearea, the drugs and the gangster-ism, but he has not let any of thisstand in his way to becoming thefirst in his family to finish matricand to graduate from UWC.

Now he wants his words to em-power and motivate a generationto find their way to fulfil their ownpotential.

He graduated in 2010 as a socialworker and worked for two yearsbefore he realised there was some-thing about his journey that hewanted to share through writing, which was always a passion forhim.

We climb the four flights of grey, grimy stairs to the family’s flat onthe top floor, carefully avoidinglines of the washing spilling in ourpaths. Toddlers sitting on thestairs have to be carefully avoidedbut shouts of greeting echo to himfrom among the flats.

“This climb is tough, but good ex-ercise,” he says.

“There is my wealth,” he addswith a smile, pointing to piles of pa-pers on two kitchen chairs in theirliving room.

Toddlers are shooed out to playas he starts to explain his journeyto his dream of becoming a pub-lished writer.

“It’s not been easy. It’s been

tough but the journey has con-vinced me that victory over thesecircumstances is part of the legacyI want to leave for all youth andpeople who feel they can’t win oversuch circumstances.

“That is why I also have plans tostart a legacy centre in the areawhere people can discover peoplejust like me.”

The first part of this continuingjourney for Jeremy is getting hisfirst book published.

“I have called my book Triumphbecause that is how I feel about mylife,” he continues.

“Everything was in place for meto become a drop-out. My parentsdied when I was young, my sisterhad to leave school to support us,my brother was involved withdrugs and gangs.

“There was no motivation or in-spiration for me but somehow I re-alised that my life, where it was go-ing, was my choice.”

His book takes you on that jour-ney from changing four subjects inhis matric year, failing but not giv-ing up as he wrote the supplemen-tary exams and having to borrowR650 to enrol at UWC.

“I still have to pay back thatloan,” he smiles as he nurses the re-ceipt carefully.

“But I will because my life isabout more than money, I want mywords to be an inspiration and mo-tivation to others to find thatstrength in themselves no matterhow many times you may fail, nomatter how many obstacles are putin your way.

“This book is my story of how Ifound that strength and my wish isthat it can be distributed acrossSouth Africa where there are chil-dren who need that inspiration.”

While Jeremy is waiting for asponsor or assistance in getting hisbook published, his words have al-ready played a part in healing.

Mary-Ann Wenham from Somer-set West was the proof reader forhis work and said how the wordsof this young man made a differ-ence in her life.

These are her comments (edit-ed):

The first time I met Sylvester Iwas struck by his self-disciplineand mature thinking. It just so hap-pened that shortly after reading itI had a stroke and my speech wassignificantly impaired.

Every night as I lay in bed I foundmyself thinking about the messagein his book and began to repeat inmy mind, “I will talk properly!”

I used to practise in a whisperhow I would greet hospital staffand fellow patients the next morn-ing but it would still be slurred andI would be disappointed. Or so Ithought.

In fact my speech was improvingslightly every day and a fewmonths down the track it was hardto believe I ever had a problem.

Sylvester’s message of never giv-ing up was all the therapy I needed. He repeats it over and over in hisbook – it stuck in my mind – andit worked.

“There’s still a lot more healingthat my words must do,” he re-flects.

“There are more books that mustbe written by me now I just needanother helping hand in my life tospread my dream and triumph tothe world.”V If you can play a part in making thatdream come true Sylvester can be contacted on 063 032 7508, email sylvester[email protected].

Bullying is getting the boot in Bonte-heuwel as schools celebrated thefourth annual National Bullying

Awareness Day.On Friday 31 July some roaring Harley

Davidsons were heard on the streets of thearea as they marched from school to schoolto take their message to the community.

Established by the JAG Foundation’sJAGBullyProof programme, the eventlinked 13 schools (12 Primary and a HighSchool)with the commongoal of standingupagainst bullying.

Each school was given a personal valuesuch as Respect, Integrity, Leadership etc.and were requested to prepare a positive

message about how their specific valueplays a role in creating a bully-free schoolsaid Alex Corrin from the JAG Foundation.

“Two learners from each school, togetherwith their message, joined the JAGBully-Proof team for a Superhero inspired mis-sion,” he said.

“In the week leading up to National Bully-ing Awareness Day, JAGBullyProof’s Su-perhero mascot had unfortunately had hisarmourbrokenbybullies andwas in 13 sepa-rate pieces.

“Each piece of armour represents a specif-ic personal value which JAGBullyProof’sSuperhero uses to protect himself from thenastiness of bullying.

“Each piece was found by a differentschool and all needed to come together to re-store his values and empower him once

again to be BullyProof.”Corrin explained that they started out

from Central Park Primary school when all26 learners, together with various JAGBul-lyProof ambassadors such as Prime Circledrummer Dale Schnettler, and an entourageof Harley Davidson’s, set off on a Superheroinspiredwalk through the community to en-courage others to stand up against bullying.

“The school then played host to the proc-ess of restoring JAGBullyProof’s Superhe-ro’s armour.

“Each learner pair came up in turn, quot-ed their personal value and fitted the pieceof armour into his body. After all 13 pieceshad been reunited, the mission of restoringhis values had been achieve and was onceagain BullyProofed.”

Corrin added that theywould like to thank

all their partners for the day that includedWilliams Hunt Cape Town, who supplied, inaddition to the already BullyProofed ChevyBakkie, four vehicles to ensure the childrenfrom the schools completed their mission ofreuniting ourSuperhero’s armour in the saf-est way possible.

“There’s also a special thanks to CapeTown Harley Davidson chapter which pro-vided a safety entourage for our walk.We al-so had great support from the Western CapeEducation department, as well as the Bonte-heuwel Metro Police.”

The JAGBullyProof programme is availa-ble to schools and institutions, in manualform, free of charge to run and implementas a school initiative.V For more information go to www.jagfoundation.org.za.

Soccer unites generations“S squad” wascrowned this year’s“kings of UWC”soccer champions. They walked awaywith R5000 fortheir efforts onSunday.PHOTOS: ANGELOKALMEYER

EARL HAUPT

The sun was out, fun was had and at theend of the day, a group of eight menwalked awaywith awinner’s cheque of

R5000.In what started as an innocent kick-about

between fellow students on the “dell”, out-side the University of the Western Cape’s(UWC) cafeteria in 2004, it has now flour-ished into a much anticipated “kings ofUWC” event. The annual event pits students, alumni

and all those associated with the universityin a 5-a-side soccer tournament. The daywas not only to share skills on the

pitch, but to also share stories of years goneby, reinforcing the bonds which were firstforged as students. And while there was an element of fun at-

tached to the event, the competition was redhot as 16 teams battled it out.In the end, “S squad” rose to the challenge,

beating all comers to the title.ChadHare, captain, could not hide his ela-

tion.“I can’t explain how I feel, we are just hap-

py that we did this together. “We have beenfriends for as long as we have been here, forsix or seven years. We all know each otherthrough soccer, so it’s a brotherhood. We area family.”The team’s Fabian “Takka” Wareley took

home the Lyle Arendse player of the tourna-ment award, named in honour of one of thetournament’s founding members.Hilton Stroud, one of the tournament’s or-

ganisers, said he has seen the event growfrom strength to strength whilst holding on-to the spirit which it is synonymous for.“It is also a timewhere guys from old, who

haven’t seen each other since their time atcampus, came in and met each other, braa-ied and socialised.“Even though they didn’t win the game,

they really enjoyed the fact that they had theopportunity to catch up with each other asthey come from all around the province. Soreally it has been a success on both the soc-cer side as well as the social side.”Prof Tyrone Pretorius, UWC rector, en-

joyed the Sunday spectacle, while also real-ising the importance the event plays in thelife of the university.“It’s clearly been a fun day and the weath-

er played along and from what I can see ev-eryone had fun. But more than the fun, it’sstudent, it’s staff, it’s also our alumni and it’sgreat to see their passion for the university.“It’s good for the university. It’s good for

the university’s reputation and it says a lotthat people want to be associated with theuniversity in this way.”Pretorius, without knowing the specifics

of the event’s origins, praised the enterprise

shown by the founders of the tournament, who were chased off the original field at the“dell” 11 years ago.“It’s fantastic that what started out as a

student initiative has been embraced by theälumni and has become a regular feature onthe calendar of UWC.“That’s the kind of graduates thatwewant

to produce: Graduates that take the initia-tive, that are creative and take responsibili-ty for their own development,” he conclud-ed. Fagan Muller, Santos captain and one ofthe founders of the tournament, reminiscedabout the days where students put in theirown share in the hope of taking home thespoils for a gatsby and their drink of choiceat the Barn, but also pointed out the role thetournament has played in his own career.“I think that if it wasn’t for this, then

UWC’s soccer team wouldn’t be so strong. It

was playing in this (tournament) that I de-cided to play for the UWC soccer team, whichwasprosperous in the end, playing forthe universities national team.“This started it all. In the dell, where

friends get together.“That’s why we make sure that we have

usplayinghere, theGreenDragons.Becausewe are the only team that is left of the teamsthat started this. A bunch of boys whothought class was overrated,” quippedMull-er.“It was never the intention to make it this

big. It was never the intention tomake it oneof the events on the calendar, but the cama-raderie between all the different teams fromthe res, outside, inside and guys from allover, everyone wants to be part of UWC andeveryone feels like part of the alumni on theday.”

STEHAN SCHOEMAN

Wesley Krotz is without doubtone of the very best ice hockeyplayers in the country, proven

by the fact the Canadian Parry SoundIslanders team has acquired his servi-ces.

Bearing in mind, the 19-year-oldfrom Milnerton was already selectedto represent South Africa on a seniorlevel when he was 15.

“Between the age of 10 and 13, I usedto skate with my cousin at every publicsession because we enjoyed ice skatingso much. One holiday in Johannes-burg, we were skating at Northgate Icerink and the manager approached usand asked if we would like to play icehockey for them.

Astonishing accolades“On our return to Cape Town, my

mother made enquiries about ice hock-ey and we immediately signed up forthe Learn to Play Academy that tookplace on Sunday mornings.

“I then joined the Penguins Club aft-er attending the academy and the nextmonth was selected to represent West-ern Province u.14s. That was the begin-ning and I never looked back,” saysWesley.

This young man’s accolades are as-tonishing. Representing his country inMexico at an international tourna-ment in 2011 he was voted the best u.18player of the tournament. He receivedthis honour again in Turkey in 2013,thus making him possibly the only na-tional ice hockey player to receive thebest player of the tournament award asboth a junior and senior.

“I have been fortunate to play inMexico, Turkey, Bulgaria, Spain andNew Zealand. You learn a lot by travel-ling overseas and seeing how othercountries play. The sport is also muchbigger overseas and played profession-ally. For example they train six daysa week for up to five hours a day.

“That is one of the reasons why I amso excited to join the team in Canada.I want to play well and work hard and

become the best player I can possiblybe.

Next level“It is my dream to become a profes-

sional player and one day become acoach and help grow the sport in ourcountry.

“The Canadian season starts on 6September and I will be flying out, Godwilling, on 4 or 5 September to startthis exciting journey in my hockey ca-reer.”

Parry Sound Islanders is a club thatattracts scouts from all the pro teams, and Wesley hopes this will give him theopportunity to get to the next level.

“I would like to thank Victor Kester,my mentor and supporter in Canada, for believing in me and investing in mydream, and obviously my motherKathy who is always there for me andhelping me raise funds in order for meto go to Canada,” said Wesley.V To make any financial donation to help Wesley get to Canada go to: http://www.gofundme.com/x7j3c9h
