Since the beginning of the year the 13- year-old Grade 9 Rhodes High learner from Charlesville in Montana has been the driv- ing force, and voice, of the Voice of the Youth show on Radio Kaapse Punt (Saturdays from 12 noon to 15:00). He sees this programme as the stepping stone to his dream of a career in media and has proven himself capable of handling a wide variety of topics on his show. “Even while at primary school at De Wa- veren in Ruyterwacht I was interested in the news and magazine shows on TV and radio,” he says. “My big break came when I wrote an arti- cle about Nelson Mandela for Mandela Day and was asked to come and read it on the ra- dio. Opportunity of a lifetime “I thought, Zeke, this is an opportunity of a lifetime, and asked them about presenta- tion of a youth show. They welcomed me to start the Voice of the Youth show.” Looking at some of the topics he has taken on during April, it is obvious that this teen wants to empower other young people and make them aware of the problems they face in their communities. Earlier this month he hosted the Life Changers organisation on his programme to discuss the plague of drug abuse on the Cape Flats. He also wants to use music as a means to inspire young people to live positive lives. “We featured members of a community band from Strandfontein and discussed how they go about making their music in the community and use it to empower youth,” he said. “Last week we discussed various relation- ships among youth. Friends, friends with benefits (FWB phenomenon) and long term romantic relationships. We looked at how factors such as looks, money, cars and sex play a role in relationships among young people at school, university and those just starting out to work.” This weekend (Saturday 18 April) he will be tackling child pornography and paedo- philia. Serious topics “This has become a major problem since the spread of the internet and sometimes youth are not aware of how they can be ma- nipulated. “Men who lure underage girls into their clutches and use them as sex objects, make pornographic videos and photograph them. This in turn spreads those images and vid- eos the internet where anyone can freely view them. “We will look at profiling a paedophile and how to prevent child pornography from be- ing filmed and spread on the internet.” Zeke feels some may feel these topics are too “heavy”, but it is important to make young people aware of what they face in the world. While this programme is part of his dream in life he still has his sights set higher. “I eventually want to get on television do- ing presenting but there’s also an acting ca- reer that I want to follow,” he says. “My message to other young people out there is to never give up. Reading skills for learners in Belharwill be boosted with an innovativeproject that kicked off in the area dur-

ing March.Reading and Writing Solutions hosted an

interesting project at the Maranatha Bap-tist church that called on volunteers to helpimprove these skills at schools where it isneeded.Project co-ordinator Samantha Faure ex-

plained that this initiative was the brain-child of a group of dedicated educators whoresponded to a call in a Athlone communitynewspaper in 2013 for volunteers to assistas reading volunteers at the schools wherelearners experience difficultywith reading.

Committed volunteers“Fromvery humble beginnings, very lim-

ited resources and with a few extremelycommitted and enthusiastic volunteers, aneffective reading programme was imple-mented by Reading and Writing Solutionsat the pilot school, Athlone North Primaryin Athlone in 2014,” she said. The main aims of the NPO are:. Instil a culture of reading by encourag-

ing a love for books and the written word.. Promote reading as the centre of any

learning process.. Contribute towards the improvement

of learners’ literacy performance.

. Develop communication, listening, leadership and creativity skills.

. Develop writing skills. In the Athlone area a total of 60 volunteer

reading tutors who were recruited in thecommunity work at five primary schools.

Beyond reading“The volunteers include mothers, ex-

teachers, ex-librarians, graduate students, businessmen and retired educationists,”added Faure. She also pointed out that the programme

has had an impact on more than thelearners’ reading skills. “We have experi-enced a growth in their confidence, self-es-teem and communication skills,” she said.“Theyalsohavea renewed sense of taking

responsibility for their education, aswell asdeveloping leadership skills through self-expression and self-reliance.”She also explained that the workshop in

Belhar was part of a three-day compulsorytraining session before they started atschools.“The intention of the training workshop

is to equip the volunteers with the necessa-ry skills and tools to deliver on the intendedoutcome of the reading programme and ob-jectives of Reading and Writing Solutions.“Some of the objectives of the workshop

include: how to instil and encourage posi-tive thinking; how to use visual media toprompt creativity, communication and in-sight; the power of words and how to use

them effectively during reading sessions;and effective listening skills.”Reading andWriting Solutions have been

very fortunate in receiving generous bookdonations which have aided to the develop-ment of the reading programme and al-lowed for interesting, quality readingmate-rial to be used during the reading sessions.Other than promoting reading for enjoy-

ment, the books have aided to the develop-ment of reading with comprehension, crea-tive writing and thinking, spelling and vo-cabulary usage.“The programme encourages reading as

a powerful tool to bring about change, andis seen as oneway to address themany chal-lenges faced by communities daily,” saidFaure.

Help appreciated“Our belief is that all children deserve the

opportunity to learn to use reading, writingand storytelling, meaningfully,” she con-cluded.Reading and Writing Solutions is not

funded, but rely on donations and sponsor-ships. If you are able to assist and add valueto the literacy development of the learners,or if youwould like to consider being a part-ner in this important initiative contact thenumbers below.V For more information about this project contactJeff Paulse (programme manager) on 082 216 2460or Samantha Faure (programme coordinator) on076 368 7898 or email [email protected].

Vandalism at schools in our communities iscausing more than monetary damage. The DA’s Western Cape spokesperson for

Education, Basil Kivedo, has reacted to re-cent burglaries at schools in Bonteheuweland earlier this year in Uitsig.Kivedo said he is concerned about the

psychological impact on learners, staff andparents, which is unmeasurable.“A whole community serviced by vandal-

ised schools is traumatised and paralysedby these heinous incidents,” he said in astatement.“Visiting Eurecon Primary School on 4

March, I was at a loss for words when I sawthe carnage.”On the morning of Monday 2 March prin-

cipal Frank Agulhas discovered the schoolhad beenburgled and the computer lab raid-ed.The following day, Tuesday 3 March at

02:20, he received a call froma resident closeto the school informing him that the schoolwas burning. On arriving at the school he found part

of the school engulfed in flames. Conse-quently the Grades 1 and 2 classrooms, which accommodated a total of 87 learners, were completely destroyed. It emerged that the perpetrators entered

the principal’s office through the ceilingransacked his office, stealing printers, com-

puters and other equipment. The staff room, administration block and

store room had also been damaged and ran-sacked, and two learners’ toilets were alsodestroyed by the fire.“I was in tears when the little Grade 1’s

and 2’s were peeping through the fence at

the burnt ruins and one asked tearfully,“Oom, het ons nog ’n klas en ’n skool” (uncledo we still have a class and school),” saidKivedo.“That is when I realised that the impact

of school vandalism is not only about dam-aging infrastructure but damaging the very

heart and soul of the children who hold theschool and learning in high esteem.“This incidentwill have an everlasting ef-

fect on the learners’ young minds, which atthis point of development is easily tar-nished by a barbaric act such as this.“They will now always associate school-ing and places of learning with destruc-tion, devastation and disengagement witha relatively new love of learning.”He also pointed out that these perpetra-

tors have robbed young children of an edu-cation they rightfully deserve.“These vandals have chosen to commit

malicious acts such as these in order tosupport their often devastating lifestyles.“Causing further frustration, is that the

perpetrators are damaging their very owncommunities. This in effect, implies thatthey intentionally deprive a family, towhom they are acquainted, from creatingopportunities for themselves through edu-cation to grow, develop and better equipthemselves for the job market.”Kivedo said vandalism is an unneces-

sary and preventable expense to the de-partment and a burden to society.“The statistics and costs, although high,

fail to reveal the magnitude of the problem.Intentionally damaging and ransackingschool property, deprives children and com-munities from benefitting from other re-sources that could have been funded withthemoney used to repairmalicious destruc-tion to educational institutions.”

Police in Delft took to the streets this wee-kend to fight crime in the area.“We have arrested 50 persons for the wee-

kend for various crimes ranging from do-mestic violence, rapes, robberies, theft, theft of vehicles, possession of stolen pro-perty, possession of drugs, illegal possessi-on of firearms, and illegal sale of liquor.”

This statement was made by BrigadierHendrik Jansen, Station Commander ofDelft during his morning parade with staffon Monday.Jansen said their operations made some

importants breakthroughs in the fightagainst crime, with the seizure of three ille-gal firearms and one toy gun used during

a robbery.Police also seized 48 bottles of beer,

amounts of dagga, tik, and mandrax as wellas various amounts of ammunition.Jansen said that the arrests and seizures

should be an indication of the commitmentof his personnel to create a safe space forthe residents of Delft.
