iets verskrikliks gebeur.Die meisie stap elke dag die drie blokke

in Hannes Louw-weg skool toe en terug. Ge-woonlik stap sy saam met haar ouer broer.Sy het dié keer alleen geloop, vertel haarma.Sy sê die bakkie het stadig by haar kind

verby gery, by ’n doodloopstraat ingedraaien daar gestop.Toe hulle ’n tweede keer verby ry, het hul-

le ’n u-draai gemaak en skuins voor die mei-sie gestop. Sy het ná die tyd aan haarma ver-tel die een man het agter van die bakkie af

gespring, een man het die passasiersdeuroopgemaak en die man wat afgespring het,het haar voor in die bakkie probeer druk.Die man voorin het haar toe aan die hare

beetgekry en probeer intrek, sê die ma.“My kind het verskriklik geskree en bak-

The innocent pleading eyes of previouslyabused or neglected animals look up atyou, willing to give their hearts as

you step into the Uitsig Animal RescueCentre.

It is unthinkable that the some 500 rescuedanimals on these premises might be withouta home in three months time.

The organisation last week received no-tice to vacate the smallholding nearFisantekraal to make space for the Green-ville Garden City housing development.

It possible that these animals could losetheir lives if the organisation loses its facili-ties. However, for the fervent, tough-as-nailsanimal lovers and passionate founders andmembers of this exceptional organisation,that’s not an option.

Massive mandate“Failure is not an option. It is a big worry

for us, but for the sake of the animals we can-not afford to not succeed,” said foundingmember Denay Saunders, about the organi-sation’s quest to now find new land to homethe animals.

Her love and genuine concern for the wel-fare of animals is visible in the unselfishwork she, her 15 staff members and othervolunteers have put into the organisationsince its inception in 2009.

A former veterinarian assistant, it is herintention to rescue neglected, abandonedand abused animals in the northern suburbsand to nurse them back to health, providethem with a safe and loveable haven, to reha-bilitate them and to find them permanenthomes.

The centre is the only pro-life, pro-quality-of-life animal rescue haven with premises inthe northern suburbs. This means they alsohouse animals from various other sheltersand animal welfare organisations such asthe Lucky Lucy Foundation, Adopt-a-Petand the Animal Rescue Team.

“We believe all animals have a secondchance no matter how neglected or abusedthey were when we found them. We do notbelieve in euthanising animals and will onlydo so in exceptional circumstances. We be-lieve in providing all our animals with qual-ity of life, sufficient food, shelter and atten-tion, until such time we can re-home them

with a suitable family,” says Denay.“We have had great success with our adop-

tions, while at the same time we undertakesterilisation and animal care education pro-grammes in underprivileged areas andtownships, to address the problem at thecore.”

No hard feelingsDenay says they have no gripe with the

land owners, as they were aware from thestart that the land was earmarked for devel-opment.

“Our landlords were very good and gener-ous to us over the years and we realise theimportance of housing. It’s just that it camedown on us rather suddenly and we nowhave to move very fast to raise the funds weneed to re-establish the centre,” she said.

The centre envisions purchasing theirown land, registering it in a trust and re-building their shelters on it for the exclusiveuse of the rescue centre.

“We have been working for some time nowon a future vision for a new, larger, worldclass animal rescue centre from which wecan accomplish much more than even whatwe do now. We just had no idea we wouldhave to do it so soon!”

“We are solely dependent on public donors

and our own fundraising, but believe thatwith the help of the community we can reachor target in time,” she said. “Please every-one, we have only 90 days to raise what weneed. The alternative is unthinkable.”

Planning phaseCEO of Garden Cities John Matthews con-

firmed they were in the planning phases ofphase 2 of the project, but had given the farmmanager of the Uitsig Farm appropriate le-gal notice that they would only require theland by the end of next year.

He said the lease between the farm manag-er and the centre stipulated three monthsbut this notice period was not to his knowl-edge invoked as yet.

“I am, however, happy to engage with thecentre in order to find a solution,” he said.

The organisation would need about R5million, of which they have raised R50 000to date.

“Ook die kinders kan hul bydrae lewer op

die volgende wyses: As jy vir jou ouers wagná buitemuurse aktiwiteite by die skool,moet jy dit by die hek doen – waar die hek-wag is.

“Wees bedag wat om jou aangaan en weesop die uitkyk vir verdagte persone. Moeniealleen loop nie. Praat die waarheid met jououers oor waar jy is en waarheen jy gaan.Kinders is nie altyd eerlik oor waarheen hul-le gaan nie,” sê hy.

“Ouers kan ook van groot hulp wees wan-neer hulle om die skool beweeg om ook ver-dagtes te kan identifiseer en die inligting vir

die polisie, of vir die skool, deur te gee,” sêHerselman.

Volgens lt. Kevin Williams, woordvoerdervan die Parow-polisie, is ontvoering ’n straf-regtelike misdaad, ongeag of dit suksesvol isof nie.

“Daar was ’n poging om ’n 15-jarige meisiete ontvoer en ongeag of die registrasienom-mer bekom is of nie, die aangeleentheidmoes aangemeld gewees het,” het Williamsgesê.

Williams het beklemtoon dat kindersnooit alleen moet loop nie.

Die Stad het onlangs sy konsepbegroting be-kend gemaak te midde van die talle uitga-wes waarvoor dié munisipale hoof self voor-siening moet maak.

Só het Johan van der Merwe, voorsittervan die Stad se portefeuljekomitee oor fina-nies, gesê.

“Salarisse (van stadsamptenare) is ver-hoog, só ook is Eskom se tariewe; die Stadhet uitgawes vir huur, brandstof, voertuie– alles is meer,” sê hy.TygerBurger het reeds in die uitgawe van

2 April oor die jongste verhogings in tarie-we verslag gedoen (“Rate hike in line withconsumer inflation”) en lesers ingelig oorwat om te verwag.

Hiervolgens is die Stad se kapitale begro-ting van R6 miljard, en operasionele begro-ting van R27,8 miljard reeds op Maandag 24Maart aan raadslede voorgelê vir kommen-taar teen Maandag 7 April.

“Die finale begroting sal aan die eindevan Mei goedgekeur word, met ingang op 1Julie,” het hy gesê.

Van der Merwe sê van die tien stadsdepar-temente sal “elk insette lewer oor wat hulle

nodig het in die begroting”.Hy sê daar is R700 000 afgestaan aan elk

van die 110 wyke vir wyksprojekte, wat by-voorbeeld insluit spoedkalmering, straat-ligte en om sportvelde op te knap.

“Saam met die begroting gaan ook tarie-we en beleide. Een van dié beleide is die so-genaamde ‘deernisbeleid’. Hiervolgens krybehoeftiges ‘afslag’ van die Stad,” het hy ge-sê.

“Sodra die konsepbegroting goedgekeuris, sal daar gekyk word na hoe die beleidaangepas is om hulpbehoewendes te help,”het hy gesê.

Hy noem ook dat daar weer gekyk is nahoe faktore soos bevolkingsgroei en vanda-lisme byvoorbeeld die stadskoffers geraakhet. “Dís alles faktore wat die Stad geld kos,en enige mens kan die somme doen,” het hygesê. In ’n poging om die diefstal en herverkoop van Raadsvullissakke hok te slaan, druk dieStad se departement vasteafvalbestuur sedert Junie 2013 die letters “CCT SWM” gevolgdeur ’n reeksnommer in swart teks op al die Raad se blou sakke. Dit sal verseker datalle gesteelde sakke herken en die oorsprong daarvan opgespoor kan word. Ondankshierdie maatreëls wat getref is, ervaar die Stad steeds diefstal van die blou sakke watdan onwettig op straat asook in sommige winkels verkoop word. After a lifetime of abuse, three braveyoung people broke their silence andmade a daring stand against their tor-

mentor.Not only did local siblings Teri-Ann Ro-

binson (18), Kailee Robinson (16) and JasonRoberts (22) empower themselves by crea-ting a Facebook page they provided a plat-form for others suffering abuse to do the sa-me.

In essence, the Facebook page, startedeight months ago, is a forum created byteenagers where teenagers can speak outagainst abuse and domestic violence intheir home.

The siblings decided to go public withtheir own abuse after realising the despera-te plight of so many of their peers at theirschool.

“After we started talking about our owncircumstances, a floodgate of other, similarstories reached our ears,” says Kailee.

Nowhere to turn“Somany other kids in our school toldme

that they don’t know whom to turn to orspeak to about abusive situations at homeor elsewhere, which gave us the idea,” addsTeri-Ann.

Their own page best describes their ob-jective.

“Our intention was to speak out and tellall, as all the years we were shut down andwe needed to tell our side (of the story) …we still live the horrors. Furthermore, oursituation ismeant to assist anyone and helpis given privately or people are referred ifneeded…The idea is also to empower our-selves andothers, to heal our trampled livesas best as we can. Abuse is a crime – allforms of abuse are crime. It is evil behavi-our by criminals targeting soft targets. The-re is no excuse for abuse! Stand up for yourrights. We are not victims we are survi-vors.”

Their personal ordeal has been endless.“Since we can remember it has always

been the same. He has abused us and ourmom verbally, emotionally, physically andeven financially,” says Kailee.

“I cannot remember the amount of timesI have wiped the spit off my mother’s face,

or the amount of times that we had to listento his threats, often financial, which hasprevented my mother from leaving him forthe longest time,” adds Terri-Ann.

Older brother Jason often took the bruntof the abuse, with several physical attacks.

Due to their abuser’s financial reckles-sness the familywas forced tomove17 timesin 19 years and are currently again lookingfor accommodation.

In a recent documentaryKailee producedfor the website, she quotes what she calls“The Famous Lines” of the abuser.

Red tape“Keep on doing that, and just watch and

see what I do!”; “I do what I want, when Iwant and no one can stop me!”; “Get out ofmy way, Im gonna hurt you!” are just a fewof the wounding slurs thrown their wayover the years.

“Apart from never having stability, theabuse has left us afraid and without confi-dence formost of our lives.Nobody can ima-gine the hurt and pain we’ve suffered. Thisis the first time thatwehave spoken out andit feels good.”

In themeantime, after having to navigatetheir way through a maze of red tape, thesiblings obtained an interdict against theirabuser, but still question the system.

“Hehas been orderednot to comenear us,yet he is still in possession of a copy of ourhouse keys, which up until now he has notreturned or handed in at a police station,despite legal proceedings, leaving us in con-stant fear,” says Kailee.

What’smore, following the abovementio-ned interdict, their abuser obtained a gag-ging order against the children, preventingthem from writing about him on Facebook.

“We find it strange that the same courtthat is supposed to protect us against ourabuser is now prohibiting us from exposinghim. There are several criminal charges ofassault pending against him and he is outon bail. Nothing stops him fromharmingusand yet we have been gagged from doingwhat empowers us,” says Kailee.

In many ways the siblings view theirFacebook page as a means of protection.

“Starting this page has given us new ho-pe. It makes us feel like we have done some-thing good with the horrific circumstancesdealt to us,” says Terri-Ann.

Die vloek van Kupfertal het ’n inwonervan Durbanville behoorlik beet.

Wynand Theron (67), ’n gebore Vry-stater, het reeds 34vandie 44boekeversamelwat Doc Immelman in sy lewe geskryf het.Maar, Die vloek van Kupfertal en nog nege

ander boeke, ontwyk hom.Theron se belangstelling in dié bekendeNa-

mibiese skrywer, wat verlede jaar op 9 Maartin Windhoek oorlede is, het in 1975 begin toesy nefies vir hom die boekVallei van die heili-ge vure as Kersgeskenk gegee het. Dié boekis tot vandag toe sy gunsteling.

“Ek was nog altyd lief vir Namibië en diefeit dat al Doc se romans in dié land afspeel,

het natuurlik in my kraal gepas. Niemandkon oor Namibië skryf soos hy nie!”

Self was Theron egter net een keer inNa-mibië – in 1967 vir drie weke as weermag-soldaat vir opleiding op Grootfontein.

Theron was 28 toe hy sy eerste Doc Im-melman-boek ontvang het, maar dit waseers in die 90’s dat hy aktief begin het omDoc se boeke te versamel.

“Ek het gou besef dat dit nogal skaarsitems is. Nie net omdat hy ’n gewilde skry-werwas nie, maar ook omdat die oplae vandie meeste van sy boeke maar laag was –meestal minder as 5 000.”

Uit nood het hy Doc in 2003 ’n paar keerin Windhoek gebel en met hom gekorres-pondeer. “Hywas so gaaf om virmy ’n helepaar van syboeke,waarvanhy ses onderte-ken het, per vliegtuig saam met sy vrou,Rya, Kaap toe te stuur.”

Hoewel hy hom nooit persoonlik ont-moet het nie, is die brief wat Doc in Mei2003 aan hom geskryf het, en koerantarti-kels wat oor die jare oor Doc verskyn het,vir Theron kosbaar en het dit ’n bêreplekin ’n spesiale lêer gekry.

“Sy boeke is so gewild dat daar in laterjare herdrukke gepubliseer is, maar hullehet nie dieselfde ‘karakter’ as die oor-spronklikes nie,” meen hy.

“Doc was ’n regte platjie met ’n oog vir’n mooi nooi. Al sy boeke het dan ook so’n lekker romantiese streep deur hulle,”vertel hy.

“Ek is baie gelukkig om 34 van Doc seboeke op my boekrak te hê. Van sy boekeis egter bitter skaars, veral Die vloek vanKupfertal, waarvan die oplaag maar net2 000 in 1978was.Doc se dogter, YvetteMul-doon, het vir my gesê sy soek self ook daar-die boek met ’n seer hart!”

Hoewel Die vloek van Kupfertal hom blyontwyk, het Theron ’n ander “vloek” oor-win – dié van depressie. Toe hy in 2002 assenior bestuurder van die pensioen-admi-nistrasie-afdeling by Sanlam, afgetree het,

het reaktiewe depressie toegeslaan. “Dit hetgevoel of ek in ’n leë gat instap en moes mylewe van vooraf opbou.”

Hy het vyf jaar klank aan depressie gelyvoor hy eindelik ná terapie daarin kon slaagom te herfokus en herbesin oor sy lewe.

Hy het in daardie jaar betrokke geraak bydie depressie- en angsgroep, waarvan hy dieafgelope ses jaar die voorsitter is. Hy is ookdie afgelope sowat 30 jaar die voorsitter vandie Onze Molen-huiseienaarsvereniging,waar hy die kampvegter is vir die inwonersse regte en hom beywer het vir die opknapvan die historiese meul.

Tristan Galant (12) from Belhar is nostranger to winning and has just emulatedthe senior SA golfer by becoming one of on-ly a few golfers in the junior ranks to thricetame the Fish River course.His latest achievement came last month

when he successfully defended his title atthe Fish River Challenge, and he is to de-fend his national title in Johannesburg la-ter this year.His dadMartin, who is his coach and also

heads upWPdevelopment coaching, said atthe prizegiving they were told Immelmanwas the last junior golfer to come out topson the course three times in a row.“As an 11-year-oldTristan first played the

challenge for under-13’s in 2013 and wonthat,” he said.“Later that year he was there again for

the SA Championships, and now he has do-ne it again.“It was tough for him this year, sharing

the lead on the first day but then comingin under pressure to eventually win bythree strokes.”Tristan has also been invited to play in

a tournament in Scotland next month.“This is very exciting news for him to ta-

ke part in a World Series Golf tournamentfor juniors but we are still looking for somefinancial help or sponsorship to gethim the-re,” continued Martin.“I’ve never pushed or forced Tristan into

“Hoe op aarde gaan hierdie magdom staalbo-op die water bly?” het Elzeth Austin ang-stig gedink toe sy die MSC Sinfonia se loop-plank die eerste keer betree het... met beel-de uit die fliek “Titanic” wat deur haar kopmaal.

Maar toe sy eers aan boord is, was dié ge-dagtes gou vergete. Elzeth was een van diebevoorregtes, wat in Januarie vanjaar opdie eerste Bok Radio-bootvaart was – ’n on-dervinding wat sy as “’n belewenis” be-skryf. Volgende jaar doen Bok Radio ditweer, maar dié keer gaan TygerBurgersaam en ons het by Elzeth gaan inloer omte hoor waarna ons kan uitsien. “As jy dieinboekproses agter die rug het, is dit net ge-not van voor tot agter,” vertel sy.

Sy beskryf die kajuit waarin sy tuisge-gaan het “knap as vier persone deel”, maarvoeg by dat ’n mens vinnig besef dat die tyd-jie wat jy in die kajuit deurbring, minimaalen beperk is tot stort en slaap.

“Daar is ook netjiese eetkamers waar jykan aansit vir ontbyt en driegang-aandetesas jy wil – ook alles ingesluit. Die restau-rant op die dek, wat heeldag ’n buffet aan-bied, het oorgenoeg slaaie, groente, vleisge-regte en dan is daar natuurlik die poeding-afdeling vir dié met ’n soettand,” sê sy.

Saterdagaand was daar ’n disco met ’n te-ma op die dek, waarmee die gaste tot netduskant sonopkoms vermaak is.

Dis die vraagwat die plaaslike sanger, Lu-kas de Beer, en die vervaardiger, HelmutMeijer, gevra het toe hulle aan Lukas se de-buut- album begin werk het.Alhoewel hy al baie liedjies vir ander kun-

stenaars geskryf het, het hy eers onlangs syeie album, Storm op Jupiter, bekend gestel.“Dis ietswat al komvanmykinderdae af,”

sê Lukas van symusiek. Hy was elf of twaalftoe hy al in sy eerste orkes gespeel het.Lukas sê dat daar ’n klomp dinge in sy le-

we is wat saamgekom het, sodat hy die stapkon neem om sy eie musiek op te neem. Hyhet al baie van die materiaal op die albumklaar geskryf en hy’t homself afgevra:“Waarvoor wag ek?”.“Dis nie asof ’n ou jonger word nie en dis

nie asof die tyd meer raak nie,” spot hy.Toe Lukas en Helmut besluit het om die

album op te neem, was hul kriteria dat hullemusiek wou maak wat vir hulle mooi is, on-geag of dit op die radio gespeel sou word. Al-bei hou van die 80’s, asook rock-musiek, enLukas sê dat hulle ’n bietjie van ’n soft rock-benadering gehad het.

MusikaliteitToe Lukas en Helmut ontmoet het om oor

die album te gesels, wasHelmut toevallig dievorige aand by ’n Mike and the Mechanics-vertoning en die twee het besluit om te sienof hulle nie iets van die musikaliteit vandaardie era kan vasvang nie.Lukas was bietjie bekommerd dat die al-

bum te divers is, maar hy sê dieselfde skry-wer, musikante en vervaardiger maak datdie tien liedjies opdie oueinde togbymekaarpas.Hy sê die inspirasie vir sy liedjies komvan

die school of hard knocks. Van die liedjies is

10 jaar oud en hy sê: “Ek dink moeilike tyelaat jou ophou en laat joumooi dinkwat aan-gaan.” Hy glo ook dat moeilike tye goeie ma-teriaal gee vir skrywers.“My geloof is ook vir my ’n groot inspira-

kitaar gekry het en op ses begin lesse kryhet, maar toe hy sy baskitaar gekry het, washy verlief. Dis nou rondom dié tyd dat hy syeerste orkes begin het. “Dit was vet pret,”sê hy.Wanneer hy nie sy eie musiek speel nie,

speel hy ander kunstenaars semusiek op dieradio as ontbytomroeper by Radio KaapseKansel. “Vir ’n musikant is dit ’n uitdagingom so vroeg wakker te word.”

An addition to the 2014 World TriathlonSeries calendar was in November an-nounced by the International Triath-

lon Union (ITU).For the first time ever, a World Triathlon

Series event will take place on the Africancontinent with a race to be held at the V&AWaterfront in Cape Town from 26 to 27 April.

The Cape Town race will serve as the se-cond stop on an eight-city tour starting inAuckland from 5 to 6April.

Cape Town, alongwith Chicago, is one oftwo cities to debut onthe WTS calendar in2014.

The world’s top tri-athletes have confirmedtheir participation inthe Cape Town leg of theseries. With eight of thetop ten elite men on thestart list, spectators canexpect a tight, actionpacked race. Local heroRichard Murray (ran-ked 5th) will take on Ma-rioMola (ESP),whonar-rowly beat him by 18 se-conds in the World Cupseason opener in Mooloolaba last month, aswell as fellow Spaniard Javier Gomez whois number one on the WTS rankings. With15 and seven World Series wins under theirrespective belts, Brownlee brothers Alistairand Jonathan are the most successful eliteathletes in the history of the series and willbe looking to retain their position.

With the top three ladies on the WTS ran-kings, Jodie Stimpson (GBR), Non Stanford(GBR) and Anne Haug (GER) confirmed, theladies competition will rival the elite men’s

for action. Olympic silver medallist LisaNorden (SWE) will also be making her ITUWorld Series comeback in Cape Town afterthe 2012 Olympics. Along with Helen Jenk-ins (GBR), she’ll be looking to regain her for-mer ITU World Triathlon Series glory.
