Die hospitaal se woordvoerder, Laticia
Pienaar, s hulle sal die insident ondersoek,
en as hulle bevind dat die dokter skuldig is
aan neerbuigende of onbeskofte optrede, sal
toepaslike aksie geneem word.
Hospitaalpersoneel moet gehoorsaam
bly aan die provinsiale departement van ge-
sondheid se waardes van sorg, barmhartig-
heid, respek, pasint-fokus, integriteit en re-
kenpligtigheid aan diemense wat ons dien.
Voordat Du Toit in die bestuurder se kan-
toor ingestap het, was haar geduld klaar aan
die dun kant. Jason se gesplete lipoperasie
is wr gekanselleer en al die uitstellery het
ernstige gevolge vir Du Toit se seun.
Dis asofmense nie verstaanhoe groot im-
pak hierdie uitstellery op hom het nie. Toe
dit vir die derde keer uitgestel is, was hy in

4 Februarie vir die operasie wat vir 5 Febru-
arie geskeduleer was.
Op 4 Februarie is daar vir hulle ges dat
n tekort aanwater in die hospitaal dalk kan
lei tot n kansellasie. Die volgende dag was
dit inderdaad die geval. Op Donderdag 31
Maart het hy weer ingegaan, maar di keer
is hulle op dieselfde dag terug huis toe ge-
stuur weens n tekort aan beddens. Daar is
1 384 beddens in die hospitaal.
Du Toit is toe in kennis gestel dat Jason
op 1April as ndagpasint behandel salword
en dat hy dan geopereer sal word.
Toe hulle by die huis kom, is Du Toit deur
die hospitaal in kennis gestel dat daar n te-
kort aan personeel is en dat die operasie
weer uitgestel moet word.
Toe kry ons n nuwe datum, gaan Du To-
it mismoedig voort.
Verlede week Donderdag is hy opgeneem
en hy sou Vrydag geopereer word, maar op
die dag van die operasie daag die teaterver-
pleegster nie op nie.
So hulle kon weer nie opereer nie! Ek kla
toe by die plastiese chirurg, wat my na een
van die bestuurders verwys.

Die Smile Foundation betaal n groot deel
van Jason se operasie.
Pienaar ontken egter hierdie stelling.
Sommige van die personeel wat op die
Smile Foundation-lyste werk, is nie perma-
nente werknemers van die Tygerberg-hos-
pitaal nie, maar is gekontrakteer deur die
hospitaal net om te werk op die Smile Foun-
dation-lyste.
Wanneer hierdie personeel nie beskik-
baar is nie, sal daar kansellasies plaasvind.
Ongelukkig is daar partykeer geen opsie vir
die hospitaal anders as om hierdie pasinte
se operasies te kanselleer en te herskedu-
leer nie, s Pienaar.
Stappers byRhebokskloof
Die Bellville-stapklub gaan op Saterdag 23
April na die Paarl, waar hulle Rheboks-
kloof sal aandurf.
Die groep gaan di keer die mooi kan

Being a criminal in a technological world
is getting harder by the day.
The days of easy money might become
a thing of the pastwhen anewcloud-based
and web and cellphone app is about to hit
the street.
A local IT company,ComputerGuyz, de-
signed a world first android app named
PatrolMan which will link neighbour-
hood watches with its members, the pub-
lic and the police.
SMS alerts will keep everyone instantly
aware of what is going on in their neigh-
bourhood suspicious people and vehi-
cles will be circulated and incidents will
be highlighted.
One of the developers, Craig Pedersen,
elaborates: The full version of the app
will be free until the end of the year. We
already have 100 projects and 6 500 sub-
scribers. It just keeps growing!
The app is the brainchild of Pedersen.
Initially he and his colleagues wanted to
design it for their local neighbourhood
watch in Milnerton, but the cost and time
involved saw them broadening their hori-
zons nationally.
Subscribers are now from all over
South Africa.
The Tygerberg area has been very
keen to get on-board as well, he contin-
ues. According to him all neighbourhood
watch exco members and patrollers will
have access to the full app for free even
beyond December.
People who sit in their homes those

to use the Lite ver-

include the news feed
and the SOS func-
tion.

from a website where
watches can set up
their patrollers and
area information.
Pedersen is no new-
comer to neighbour-
hood watches, having
project managed the
Milnerton Crime
Watch Trust for the
past decade.
Its a productwere
really proud of andwe
have been taken
aback by the huge up-
take from watches
countrywide. Weve
identified the same
characteristics in
most projects. Theres
a core of 10-12 people
who manage and run
the project, generally
aided by 20 to 30 patrollers who actively
walk or drive patrols in the area. Beyond
this are a fewhundred active and interest-
ed members. Our app caters to all of these
groups.
Patrollers capture incident information
and photos while on patrol. That informa-
tion is in turn stored on a web server for
monthly management reports.
At the same time, if a high priority inci-
dent is recorded, an
SMS notification is
sent to the relevant
street coordinator
and project manager.
Data usage is nomi-
nal and patrollers
have the peace of
mind of being able to
summon help by acti-
vating the SOS fea-
ture which will send
out three SMS messa-
ges with their GPS co-
ordinates. A built-in
hotspot map shows
patrollers where inci-
dents are most com-
monly recorded in
their area.
The SOS command
will SMS someones
GPS coordinates and
an SOS message to
three predetermined
numbers. These can
be the NHW patrol
phone and friends or
neighbours.
From a technology
standpoint, the app is different to the
norm. While data capture happens at app
level, the real magic is behind the scenes
in the web-based reporting and control.

The IOS version is expected to be re-
leased by mid May.

A
ggressive begging from the street
people of the Tygerberg area is be-
coming a growing concern for the
City of Cape Town.
Sometimes this type of beggar seems just
a moment away from physically abusing
someone who refuses monetary support,
but this specific reaction is not a prerequi-
site for one to be termed as aggressive.
Those who swear at you while youre
walking or driving away also fall into this
class. Mayco member for social develop-
ment and early childhood development, Su-
zette Little, says these types of beggars are
in contravention of the Citys bylaw relat-
ing to Streets, Public Places and the Preven-
tion of Noise Nuisance.
Various spots along Voortrekker Road
andMiltonRoad have been identified by ag-
grieved parties as unruly beggar hotspots.
Thewomanwho is often found on the cor-
ner of Milton and Vasco da Gama roads has
been termed a regular in the Tygerdal ar-
ea by Carina Maddix.
In response to a post made by TygerBur-
ger on the Goodwood, Parow, Bothasig
Crime Page, seven posters vented their an-
ger towards this particular beggar. Most
agree with Helen Gerstner that this woman
is one of the rudest beggars in the area, cuss-
ing people who dont give her money.
Little continues: These individuals have
been offered social assistance by the Citys
Social Development Department six times,
and have refused to be helped. These com-
plaints are often referred to the Citys Law
Enforcement Department. The Reintegra-
tion Unit has been actively engaging with
the street people and offering social assist-
ance in the form of assessments of assist-
ance required, relocations of street people
to safe spaces/accommodation, reunifica-
tion with families, and access to temporary
employment opportunities via the Expand-
ed Public Works Programme. Seven field-
workers are operational in the area onadai-
ly basis and operations are conducted on an
ad-hoc basis in the Tygerberg area in part-
nership with Law Enforcement and the
Voortrekker Road Corridor Improvement
District.
Little adds that 18 people have accepted
assistance in the periodMonday 1 February
to Thursday 31 March this year, 17 people
were relocated to shelters for accommoda-
tion and one was reunified with family in
Port Elizabeth.
The City encourages its residents, busi-
nesses and organisations to give responsi-
bly by making a donation to organisations
rendering a service to street people, rather
than giving hand-outs to street people di-
rectly. Residents are encouraged to call the
Street People helpline on 0800 872 201 if they
have any issues regarding street people in
their area, concludes Little.

Hierdie spookstories van die ou Amoria-
kraaminrigting in Parow het net so fassine-
rendgeraak soosdie oorsponklikevraagvan
een van TygerBurger se lesers oor wat ge-
beur het met die ou huis, wat toe gedien het
as n private vroedvrou-inrigting.
Op 2 Maart in die berig Kraaminrigting
nou n gastehuis isTygerBurger verkeerde-
lik onder die indruk gebring dat die huis se-
dertdien n gastehuis geword het.
Volgens die 80-jarige Eleene Fourie woon
sy al haar hele lewe in die area en die gaste-
huis was nie Amoria-kraaminrigting nie.
n Suster van n oorlede verpleegster wat
daar gewerk het, Maks Rothuysen, stem
saam met Fourie.
Volgens Fourie het baie mense haar al ge-
kontak om die regte storie te kry.
Fourie het wyd en syd gebel en selfs weer
kontak gemaak met n oudinwoner van die
huis, Dirk Rupping, wie ongeveer 20 jaar
daar gebly het.
Toe hy in die huis ingetrek het, het hy toe-
vallig die ou kraambed en n teetrollie in een
van die kamers gekry. Die het hy nou nog.
Rupping se storie gaan egter
nie oor die dae toe die kraamin-
rigting nog oop was nie ...
Hy onthou die duistere sy
daarna.
Dit is om hierdie rede dat die
presiese adres van die huis nie
bekendgemaak sal word nie.

Die geeste vang jou as jy alleen
is of rustig verkeer, s Rup-
ping met n hees stem.
Een van my vriende wat
daar oorgeslaap het, het een-
keer verskrik vir my ges hy
het gedink dis ek wat daar in-

Toe Fourie die storie van die
man met die rooi das en swart
pak aan n gewese Parow-inwo-
ner vertel het, het die man ges
hierdie kleredrag was gewild
indiemiddel vandie laaste eeu,
want dit is wat party spoorweg-
werkers gedra het.

Agter is daar n bakoond, maar ek dink
nie dit was n gewone bakoond nie. Ek en n
vriend het een aand besluit onswil die oond-
jie se bak aan die onderkant oopbreek om te
sien wat ons daar binne kry.
Onswas nie groot drinkers nie, maar ons
het nietemin n bier of twee gedrink. Maar
nee! Daar kon snaakse goed daarin gewees
het, toe breek ons dit nie oop nie. Die bak-
oond het straks te veel gelyk soos n klein
krematorium...
Presies waar die ou Amoriakraaminrigting gele was, is nie naastenby so interessant as wat skynbaar in die
huis gebeur het nadat die inrigting toegemaak het nie.

Dit het n vals alarm geneem om die Pa-
row-polisie in n goeie lig te stel.
Volgens n Parow-inwoner, Sharon Vil-
joen, het die polisie nie net hul werk gedoen
nie hulle het hul werk gd gedoen.
Toe sy onlangs n groot slag hoor nabyhul
kombuis, was sy seker iemand probeer in-
breek by die huis.
Ons was in die bed en ek kon nie slaap
nie. Ek het iets buite gehoor en toe saam
met ons kat in die rigting van die kombuis
gekyk.Onshet driemaande geledekameras
genstalleer. So, toe ek ook glas hoor breek
het, kyk ek op die selfoon deur die kameras
na buite of ek iets kan sien. Ekkonniks sien
nie, maar het vir my man ges hy moet sy
geweer kry. Ek het dadelik 10111 gebel, s
sy.
Vier minute later was die polisie daar!
Hulle het die perseel deeglik deursoek en
kon geen teken van inbrekers of rowers
vind nie.
Ek praat nooit sleg van die polisie nie.
Ek respekteer hulle baie, want volgens my
het hulle nog net altyd goeie diens aan ons
verskaf. Mense is altyd so vinnig om hulle
te kritiseer, maar ons gee nie lof aan hulle
wanneer hulle dit verdien nie, s Viljoen.
Volgens haar lees n mens baie van die
slegte dinge in die lewe.
Daar is polisieledewat op diens komwat
miskien nooit weer huis toe sal gaan nie!

The Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP)
hosted a free pop-up skate park on Saturday.
The fun day was held at the Kerkplein
parking lot in Bellville on the corners of Ted-
dington and Vrede streets, and visitors were
treated to live music, dance, food vendors, a
beginners skate clinic and skate competi-
tions with prizes to be won.
The equipment used at the event was built
by students from Westcliff High School and
Delft TechnicalHigh School, the participants
in a workshop developed by the GTP and
Push Skateboarding.
Theworkshopwas designed to give techni-
cal high school learners an opportunity to
gain practical experience in the design and
construction of skate park equipment.
The events aim was to open up public
space for use by youngsters through non-mo-
torised transport such as skateboarding, cy-
cling and rollerblading.
There are very few facilities situated along
the Voortrekker Road Corridor that are ac-
commodating to such activities and this of-
ten results in teenagers and young adults
skating in unsafe areas and on platforms not
designed to be skated on.
Skateboarding is one of the few sports in
which participants make creative use of bar-
ren urban environments.
Many benefits are realised through skate-
boarding as it teaches one discipline and
commitment while allowing an outlet for ex-
pression.

njectingdrugusers on theStepUppro-
gramme recently took to the streets of
Bellville to help clean them up of dis-
carded needles.
Through the project essential HIV pre-
vention services are rendered to users,
but their habits remain frowned on by lo-
cals for a variety of reasons, including
the random discarding of used needles.
Rudolph Basson, Step Ups project co-
ordinator, says that while their services
are evidence based and enjoys local and
international support that shows how
needle supply programmes reduce inap-
propriately discarded sharps in the long
term, he also admits this remains one of
the hiccups.
We find that some of the needles we
provide are inappropriately disposed of
in public spaces. The reasons are com-
plex, but it is a reality that needs to be
addressed. Members of the broader com-
munity, law enforcement and injecting
drug users have all raised this issue, he
says. In response to this, beneficiaries
of the project have volunteered to be
trained to cleanupareas in their commu-
nities where needles have been left.
Basson says a number of them have
been trained to be competent to handle
this waste appropriately and according
to best practices, and a team took to Bell-
villes streets to put their proverbial
money where there mouths are.
Subsequently, we have made slots
available for them to join our fieldwork
team on needle clean-ups, and they have
enthusiastically taken the opportunity
to engage in this meaningful work, he
adds.
This has significantly expanded our
capacity to remove inappropriately dis-
carded needles from public spaces.
Basson says they are committed to re-
moving all needles from any affected lo-
cation within a maximum of 48 hours of
it being reported to them, adding they
aimed to improve the response time in
future.
We therefore urge all members of the
public to report sightings of inappropri-
ately discarded needles to the Step Up
project coordinator.

die gewilde The Grind Obstacle Course
Race saam met ons kom deelneem.
Almal van hulle is fiks, vars en slagge-
reed vir wat die organiseerders en
Moeder Natuur hul kant toe mag gooi.
Eerlik gesproke, ons tweetjies was nie
voorbereid nie. Totaal en al nie.
Kort nadat die toeter geblaas het en ons
op ons pad gestuur is, was albei van ons
al pootuit. Daar word gekla oor n rug,
seer voete en albei van ons hyg na asem.

kom! roep een van
die marshalls. Dit
help egter nie. Die
pyn is te erg en
ons longe het nog
suurstof nodig.
Hardloop julle
maar, dag ek. Ons
sien julle aan die
voorkant. In my
agterkop so
terwyl ons stadig

ek ek moes seker gestrek het.
Verder af in die wedloop moet ons by
n bult op. Onse eerste obstacle. Daar l
nog 19 van hulle voor!
Elke man vir homself, dink ek terwyl
ek my kollega agterlaat. Aan die bokant
sluit hy egter kort daarna by my op die
kruin aan.
Ek kyk voor my uit. Dis net die begin.
Voor ons wag daar nog duine om oor te
hardloop, vraghouers om oor te klouter,
ng bulte om uit te klim, emmers water
wat ons moet ronddra, sandsakke wat ons
moet optel, sakke vol stene wat ons moet
lig, yskoue water waarin ons moet klim,
toue waarop ons ons bewerige bene moet
balanseer, modder waardeur ons moet
kruip en bande in die ysige damwater
waaroor ons ook hande-viervoet moet
beweeg voor daar by die eindpunt
uitgekom word.

Our organisation has had three
separate incidents of abduction
in the last week the one

Kombersies teen winterkoue

kies later en 44 kombersies was gereed vir
n verdienstelike bestemming.
Sowat sewe inwoners en personeellede by
die versorgingseenheid van die Fairtrees-af-
treeoord, asook familielede, het reeds verle-
de winter met brei en hekel begin als met
wol wat die inwoners van di aftreeoord ge-
skenk het.
Die oudste inwoner was die 93-jarige Ida
Hammond. Sy en haar dogter, SandyEasom,
het fluks saamgewoeker met die penne.
Die kombersies gaan nou in die komende
winter die benewarmhouvan inwoners van
Huis Martina in Parowvallei. Die komber-
sies is verlede Donderdag tydens n tee aan
HuisMartina oorhandig. So baiemense het
nuwe vaardighede aangeleer; mensewat nie
tevore kon brei of hekel nie. Die personeel
en inwoners het saamgewerk en ons beskou
dit as n groepsaktiwiteit ombande te smee,
verduidelik Sonja Russouw, bestuurder by
die versorgingseenheid van Fairtrees-af-
treeoord. Die vlytiges by Fairtrees-aftree-
oord brei nou hangeroortreksels.
Ons sal ditwaardeer asmensevir onswol
kan skenk, het sy ges.

eandie du Randt gaan eersdaags as deel
van haar landwye toer n draai in Brac-
kenfell maak om oor die inhoud van
haar boek met tienerdogters te praat.
Dit vind plaas op Vrydag 27Mei by die NG
Kerk Brackenfell-Wes en sal die enigste op-
trede in die noordelike voorstede van Kaap-
stad wees.
Leandie is tans bekend vir haar rol as
Ivanka Gouws in die gewilde Afrikaanse se-
pie Binnelanders, wat weeksaande op ky-
kNet te sien is.
Bedryfsielkunde
Maar wat die meeste mense nie weet nie,
is dat sy in 2010 haar honneursgraad in be-
dryfsielkunde cum laude aan die Universi-
teit van Johannesburg verwerf het en sedert
2012 n geregistreerde psigometris is.
Dis hierwaarhaar passie virmense enhul
uniekheid ontstaan het. Sy het toe verder ge-
gaan en haar eie selfhelpboek, Gemaklik in
jou eie lyf, vir tienermeisies geskryf. Dit is
toe in Mei 2014 deur Struik Lifestyle in Afri-
kaans en in Engels as Comfortable In Your
Own Skin gepubliseer.
Die behoefte het toe by Leandie ontstaan
om haar motivering vir die skryf van die
boek en die boek self met die meisies op n
persoonlike vlak te deel in n motiverings-
praatjie #NoOneCanBeatYouAtBeingYou.
In haar boek motiveer sy jong meisies om
hul beste self te wees, eerder as om hulself
met ander te vergelyk.
Enomdaardeurhul energie in te sit inhul-
self en die ontwikkeling en ontdekking van
daardie self en sodoende gemakliker in hul
eie lywe te begin voel.
My grootste doelwit met my boek en
praatjies, en dan die landwye toerwaarop ek
saam met die gaskunstenaar Irene-Louise
van Wyk in 2016 gaan, is om meisies en
vroue te laat besef dat elkeenvanhulle spesi-
aal en uniek is en n talent het wat niemand
anders op die planeet het nie.
Ek strewe daarna om elkemeisie en vrou
te probeer help of inspireer om hul volle po-
tensiaal te ontdek en te gebruik en om goed
te voel oor hulself.
Tienermeisies
Die optrede word slegs aanbeveel vir tie-
nermeisies bo die ouderdom van 12, saam
met hul mas, oumas en tannies.
Dit begin om 18:00 by die NG Kerk Brac-
kenfell-Wes op die hoek van Janie- en Fern-

invited
to apply
for aid
T
heCity ofCapeTowns SocialDevelop-
ment and Early Childhood Develop-
ment Directorate is inviting NGOs
and shelters to apply for aid to helpmanage
the expected influx of street people needing
assistance over winter.
The department is calling onnon-govern-
mental organisations (NGOs) to apply for
aid as part of its Winter Readiness Pro-
gramme for street people.
Each year, the directorate procures food,
blankets, mattresses and toiletries that are
distributed to qualifying NGOs working
with street people.
Some shelters are over run by requests
for assistance in winter when many street
people look for a warm and dry place to
sleep. Our contribution is meant to ensure
that these organisations can help as many
people as possible, says the Citys Mayco
member for social development and early
childhood development, Suzette Little.
In 2014, 16 organisations qualified for aid
and the number increased to 17 last year.
Earlier this year, the City held a winter
readiness workshop with organisations to
assess theprogramme, includingwhy some
requests for aid were turned down and also
how the City and its partners can stream-
line the aid programme going forward.
One of the suggestionswas that the appli-
cation period be open for longer than be-
fore, so applications will only close on Fri-
day 13 May.
I appeal to organisations to visit our
website and complete their applications.
They need to provide supporting documen-
tation, so Iurge themtoapply sooner rather
than later. A final decision will be made on
an application once we have conducted a
site visit to ensure that the information
provided was correct, says Little.
Applicants must be registered as non-
governmental or non-profit organisations,
have facilities where people can overnight,
and comply with all health and safety regu-
lations.

In addition to providing funding for the
winter readiness programme, the Citys
Street People Programme will continue its
own interventions designed to help people
get off the streets and prevent others from
migrating to the streets.
One of the most frustrating challenges
continues tobepeoplewhorefuseouroffers
of assistance. We cant force anyone to ac-
cept help, but on the other hand it looks like
we arent doing anything to address the is-
sue. I have to remind the public that it is
not a crime to be homeless. There are
bylaws that prohibit certain behaviour in
public and our law enforcement officials
act as far as they can in enforcing these

public to give responsibly. Find a shelter
or charity and channel donations through
them. Handouts simplyperpetuate adevas-
tating cycle that we are trying very hard
to break.
