She identified her alleged rapist, but no-one has been arrested yet for the re-peated rape of the four-year-old girl at

the Parow day care centre she was attend-ing.The child’s mother, who cannot be named

to protect the young victim, says she is per-plexed that no arrest have beenmade yet, al-thoughher child apparently told her that theperpetrator was the husband of the daymother where she stays four nights a week.

On the morning of Saturday 16 Januarythe mother, who recently started workingnight shifts, pickedupher child from thedaycare where her daughter sleeps when she ison duty.“My child could not walk; she was in pain.

I took her to a doctor who referred us to KarlBremer Hospital,” she says. Here doctorsconfirmed the mother’s worst fear and con-tacted the police to report a rape case.“The case is being investigated by our spe-

cial unit FCS,” says Lieutenant KevinWilli-ams of the Parow police.According to him a suspect has been iden-

tified but not arrested “in order for the in-vestigator to do a thorough investigation in-to the matter”.“It is a small house and six adults sleep

there. How is it possible that no-one heardmy child screaming? Why aren’t all of themarrested?“Why was the suspect’s computer and cell

phone not taken in as possible evidence?”the mother asks. The mother said she paidthe day mother R200 per night for her childto sleep there, in the same room as her.“I trusted her with my child,” she says.According toWilliams the daymother can

only be held accountable for the crime if sheknew about it but did not report it to the po-lice or a social worker.“Any action against the day care centre

canbe reported to a socialworker by the par-ent for possible investigation. The policewill focus on the criminal investigation,”Williams says.The mother says DNA tests will now be

done to determine who raped her child, butthis may take weeks, if not months.She has quit her job to be with her child,

who isnowreceiving treatment andcounsel-ling at Karl Bremer.

The City’s next ecological burn at theTygerberg Nature Reserve is plannedfor February or March, with the exact

date depending on the weather.The burn will aim to preserve the natural

vegetation in the reserve and approximate-ly 28 hectares will be burnt on the easternslopes, says Penelope Glanville, biodiversi-ty manager of the reserve area.“It will take place on management block

TGB4,which borders theWelgedacht Estateand Cronje Street,” she said.“The area designated for burning was

ploughed approximately 60 years ago andhas self-restored into shrubby renosterveld,

which is in need of a burn to complementthe restoration process.”The reserve conserves one of the largest

remaining areas of the critically endan-gered Swartland shale renosterveld andprescribed ecological burns are crucial forthe management of this land as fire playsa fundamental role in the vegetation’s lifecycle.“Ideally, the area should burn every five

to 10 years,” she said.Teams from the Environmental Resource

Management Department (ERMD) and Fireand Rescue Service, as well as Working onFire andVolunteerWildfire Serviceswill be

managing the burn.“For safety reasons, the reserve will be

closed to the public on the day of burningand for a few a days after until the area isdeemed safe,” she said.Local residents are advised to keep their

windows shut while the burning takesplace.Flammable items such as gas canisters

Two suspected drug dealers were caught dur-ing an undercover operation by Bothasig po-lice.According to police spokesperson Warrant

Officer Jacques Mostert, police made arrestsin Kleinbosch on two separate occasionswhen they executed undercover operationswith the aim to arrest suspects involved withdrugs dealing.“During the first part of the operation a 45-

year-old male from Parow was arrested fordrug dealing when he sold khat.“A shortwhile later, during the second part

of the operation, another male suspect, a 22-year-old resident from Oakdale, was arrestedfor drug dealing when he sold dagga. Duringa search he was found to be in possession of10 units of dagga,” says Mostert.Bothasig station commander Lieutenant

aan ’n hondesalon.Die negejarige Pikenese hondjie, Boeta, is

vroeg in Januarie na die Loving Care-hon-desalon in ME Rothmanstraat in Parow ge-neem. Volgens sy eienaar, Johan Brits, wasdie hond in pyn toe hulle hom gaan haal.“Boeta se hare is so vier jaar gelede in

Malmesbury te kort geskeer en die hare opsy rugwou niemeer groei nie.Met baie bor-sel het die hare weer begin groei en het hyweer sy lieflike pels teruggekry,” sê Brits.Met die onlangse hitte het hulle besluit

om weer die hond se hare te laat sny.“Ons kenBarbara (Reese, eienaar van die

salon) al ’n hele paar jaar en sy was nog al-tyd bewus van Boeta se sensitiewe vel. Toeons die hond vir haar neem, was sy baie be-indruk met sy mooi vel. Sy het gesê sy gaan’n lang lem gebruik sodat sy nie die hondse vel beskadig nie.“My vrou het so ver gegaan en weer be-

vestig dat die hond nie met ’n kort lem ge-skeermoetwordnie. Teen 17:30 hetmyvroudie hond gaan haal en was geskok oor dietoestand waarin die hond was,” sê Brits.Volgens Brits was die hond getraumati-

seerd en het onder die bed weggekruip.“Hy het duidelik baie pyn ervaar. Ons het

salf aan diewonde op sy vel gesit in die hoopdat dit hom soukalmeer. Ekhet vir Barbara

foto’s gestuur van die wonde op die hond sevel en het hom ook veearts toe geneem. Dieveearts sê die hond is te na aan die vel ge-sny,” sê Brits.Reese sê die hond is nie opsetlik beseer

nie. “Ek werk al meer as vyftien jaar metskouhonde, sowaaroor sal eknou ’n dier be-seer? Ek was ook lank die voorsitter vanStellenbosch se dierebeskermingsvereni-ging. Die hond se hare was erg gekoek enditmoes afgesnyword. Deur ’n hond se harete laat koek, is ook ’n vorm van dieremis-handeling,” sê Reese, wie se honde ook aanskoue deelneem. Sy sê die veearts se verslagbewys nie dat die hond mishandel is nie.“As die hond se eienaars voel hul hond is

mishandel, kan hulle gerus ’n klag lê. Ekvoel ek is aan niks skuldig nie,” sê Reese.

Daar was selfs bloed op Boeta se vel te sien ná hy van die hondesalon gekom het.

The topic of porcupines kept in tiny cag-es and having their quills pulled out ofthem live for items such as lamp

shades, was recently brought to the forewhen aBellville resident caught one of theseanimals.“I caught a porcupine on my property in

Loevenstein and returned it to the Tyger-berg Nature Reserve. I used a trap cage pro-vided by them for this purpose,” Loeven-stein resident Johan Olivier told TygerBur-ger.Porcupines love bulbous plants and this

one was foraging in Johan’s garden nightly.While Johan’s intent with the animal was

pure and he later released the little fellowback into the reserve, the same cannot besaid of porcupines caught and used to makemoney off tourists in some townships.Bellville resident Geralde Leistner told

TygerBurger of an European visitor to herhome who bought some of these quills thatcame from a live animal while on a visit toLanga. “The tourist was taken on a specialtour. She saw the porcupine in a little cage– smaller than the one they are normallycaught in.“She asked what it was used for and the

vendors said the quills are plucked and canbe used tomake lamp shades,” Geralde said.“So you have to keep the animal in the cage,otherwiseyoucannot get thequills, they toldthe tourist.”Geralde said anyamount of quillswashar-

vested, all while the animals were held “hos-tage as prisoners”, and that the smaller thanusual cage prevented the animal from pro-tecting itself by shooting out quills in self-de-fence.“This tourist was allowed to pull out the

quills and that was the end of my friendshipwith her,” Geralde said.

“She told me the animal was screaming;it was hurt and didn’t like its quills beingpulled out and because it is kept in such atiny space, it could not protect itself.”The Cape of GoodHope SPCA’s spokesper-

son, Belinda Abraham, answered a numberof questions around the issue.“We are not aware of the above-mentioned

incident and would like the opportunity toinvestigate should the tourist be willing toshare further details,” she said.“We are aware of the hunting of porcupi-

nes using cruel trapping methods. The wiremesh traps are funnelled and narrow andonce a porcupine is in the trap, it is unableto exit.“They are hunted for their meat, quills

and potentially for ‘bezoar’ – the contents oftheir stomach. There is an unfounded beliefthat ‘bezoars’ have cancer curing proper-ties,” Abraham added.She said they are aware of porcupines be-

ing trapped in the Tokai area “where a num-ber of porcupine traps were identified afterthe fires that ravaged the peninsula inMarch 2015”.“One trap contained the burnt remains of

a porcupine.”She said should the public be aware of

scenes such as the one in Langa, they shouldreport it immediately, which would be fol-lowed by immediate action on the SPCA’spart. “Porcupines shed their quills naturallyon occasion, but I would suggest that tour-ists always question the origin of the quills.“In addition to this, it is against the law

to keep anywild animal(s) in captivity with-out a permit. Where tourists come acrosswild animals in circumstances such as theabove, I would appeal to them to please re-port the incident to the CoGH SPCA or anyother wildlife authority,” she said.V Abraham can be contacted at the CoGH SPCA on021 700 4154.

The Hope Grass project, which waslaunched by Annelize Geldenhuys in Gau-teng to supply mowed grass as forage forfarmers in drought-stricken areas in thecountry, now has a Western Cape flavourwith Jeane-Mareé Greeff (26) from Alltechon Bottelary Road continuing the projectthis side of the country.

Greeff urges everyone who has mowedtheir lawn, as well as garden companies,schools and municipalities, to donate thegrass to her to be distributed up north.

Greeff read on Facebook about the projectand she and her colleagues decided to get in-volved.

The company offered their premises for adrop-off point for the project.

The grass is dried and put into bags beforebeing transported.

Alltech is situated on the corner of Koelen-hof and Bottelary roads. Drop-offs can bedone on weekdays between 08:00 and 18:00.Weekend drop-offs can be arranged.

People illegally dumping waste or rub-ble might face a tougher penalty forbreaking the law.

This warning follows a possible changein the waste by-law – a change that mightsoonallow for stricter punishment, theCityof Cape Town said

Last week the City said in a bid tostrengthen its arsenal against illegal dump-ing, the mayoral committee has proposedanamendment to the integratedwasteman-agement by-law – a change that would al-low for the impoundment of vehicles usedin illegal dumping.

The change in the by-law will allow theCity’s law enforcement agencies to seize,without awarrant, a vehicle that is suspect-ed of or is on reasonable grounds believedto be involved with illegal dumping, ErnestSonnenberg, Maycomember for utility ser-vices, said. The amendment was recentlyapproved by the mayoral committee.

Should the full council approve theamendment, it will pave the way for itspromulgation, the City explains.

The seized and impounded vehicle willonly be released if a criminal charge is notlaid or no fine is issued within 48 hours ofits seizure, if the criminal charges againstthe individual have been withdrawn or ifthey have been acquitted of the charged of-fence. The court may also declare that sucha vehicle be forfeited to the state, providedthat this would not affect the rights of anyperson to the vehicle, they explain.

Individuals foundguilty of using their ve-hicle for illegal dumping, with that vehiclehaving been seized and impounded, willneed to pay a tariff for its release, the valueof which will increase for the first three of-fences, the City said.

A guilty partywill have to fork out R7 500to have their vehicle released for the firstoffence, R10 000 for the second and R15 000for the third. Each subsequent impound-ment fee will have a value of R15 000.

“TheCity spends aroundR350mannuallyin its efforts to keep pace with the volumesof illegally dumped waste that appearacross Cape Town. It is essential that theCity is afforded the channels and supportnecessary in order to address this ongoingdamage to our environmental health andunacceptable drain on our funds.

Die Trans Agulhas vind elke jaar van 28Desember tot 1 Januarie plaas. Daar wordongeveer 700 km oor vyf dae afgelê.

“Dag een begin by Plettenbergbaai. Onsjaag dan 189 km en stop by nege strandewaar daar om ’n vlag gehardloop wordvoordat daar in Mosselbaai klaargemaakword.

“Dag twee is 86 km tot in Stilbaai. Dagdrie strek oor 161 km tot in Struisbaai. Dagvier is 111 km tot in Gansbaai en die vyfdedag nog vir oulaas 131 km tot in die Strand.

“Daar word op elke skof by verskillendestrande aangedoen en elke middag word ’nbranderkompetisie aangebied om die toe-skouers te vermaak en die borge ekstrablootstelling te gee.”

Wimpie se hoogtepunt tot dusver is toehy van sy 21ste Trans Agulhas die algehelewenner was en in baie slegte weersom-standighede eerste in die Strand aange-kom het.

Whitey se aandeel in die spanvertoningkan nie gering geskat word nie.

“Whitey het ’n baie groot aandeel in onssukses. Hy moet rondskuif in die boot wan-

Wimpie raai persone wat die sport wilbeoefen aan om eers aan te klop vir raadby bestaande deelnemers en om eers na ’ntweedehandse boot en enjin te kyk.

As die gogga behoorlik gebyt het, kandaar na nuwe toerusting gekyk word, isWimpie se wyse raad.

Primary schools are invited to become partof the biggest soccer tournament in theworld for children between 10 and 12 yearsby entering this year’s Danone Nations Cup.

Over 1500 schools register to participate inthe tournament each year.

The first prize is a trip to participate inthe world finals with 31 other countries.

The closing date for registration is 1March. Games will begin at cluster level im-mediately after this.

The winners will progress to the regionalfinals, culminating in nine provincial win-ners playing in the national finals.

Following the highly successful inauguralLet’s Play schools physical education chal-lenge event last year, involving 403 000 pu-pils from 473 primary schools, SuperSportrelaunched the event on Monday.

The Challenge is a nationwide fitness com-petition for Grade 4 pupils.

The primary objective of the Challenge isto reinforce curriculum-oriented physicaleducation and to promote physical activityin all schools.

Let’s Play coaching teams will target vari-ous schools to run the Challenge. The fittestGrade 4 pupils from each school will com-pete against other schools, after which thetop three schools in each province will quali-fy for the provincial semi-final, leading to an

overall provincial winner.The final will take place at the end of Octo-

ber.The obstacle course challenge is designed

for both boys and girls and will be standard-ised at every school. It includes soccer sla-lom dribble, catch and throw, mini hurdles,rope pull and an agility drill, all of which arecompleted in a matter of minutes.

While activity is the central focus of thechallenge, it will also draw attention to thesocial issue of bullying. UFC athlete andLet’s Play ambassador Garreth “Soldier-boy” McLellan, as well as other sports per-sonalities, will make appearances at schoolsto address the issue.

“We believe that this is a meaningful way

to get schools involved in physical activity,particularly as government has highlightedthe need for children to become more ac-tive,” says Vaughn Bishop, head of Let’sPlay. “Kids need not be superstars; the chal-lenge is designed to accommodate everyoneat primary school level.”

The fittest primary school in each prov-ince will compete for the national title andthe prize of a R1.3m all-purpose, all-weathermulti-use sport court to be built at the win-ning school.
