An investigation into members of theParow police is under way after theyallegedly failed to respond to numer-

ous calls for assistance from theTygerwatchneighbourhood watch who followed threearmed men for hours.

Tygerwatch chairperson George Kepkeysaid he received a call from another neigh-bourhood watch member just after 12:00 onSaturday 26 July.

“He saw a suspect whowas part of a groupof three, handling a firearm and putting amagazine into it. The three suspects had adog (white and brown pitbull) with them ona leash and were walking from Ravensmead

along De La Rey Road, in the direction ofJoubert Street,” Kepkey said.

Kepkey phoned the sector manager of thestation, who was off duty, but said he wouldalert the station.

He then found the threemen in front of theSpringbokSportsBar inClaredonStreet andphoned the police again to confirm their po-sition.

“I also phoned another neighbourhoodwatchmemberwho parked on the side of theroad (Clarendon Street) to monitor the sus-pects.” Kepkey and the man who originallysaw the suspects, parked inMarket Street towait for the police.

A police van apparently appeared only 35minutes after the first call was made.

“I conveyed the information and location

of the suspects to the clearly agitated ser-geants. I told them I am not happy with thepolice response and that I am going to reportthis, to which they drove off in the directionof Clarendon Street where we last saw sus-pects,” Kepkey says.

The van then made a u-turn “and contin-ued driving in the opposite direction shortof the exact location which I explained tothem”, he says.

According to him, the three armed menstarted running towards a passage leadingto Ravensmead and hid behind a wall inDuiker Street.

Kepkey phoned the police again to letthemknow.He says the onemanhad the guntucked into his pants.

“We then proceeded to Kingston Street in

Ravensmead, where we monitored suspectsfrom across the road.

At 13:00 Kepkey phoned the station com-mander of Parow police, but the phone wasoff.

They also phoned 10111 and the Bellvilleand Ravensmead Police Stations to ask forhelp.

Almost two hours after they were firstspotted, the three armed men crossed intoRavensmead.

“As the suspects were going down Stro-ebel Street a Flying Squad vehicle pulled upat the garage. We informed them where thesuspects were heading. The Flying Squad lo-cated them in a side street and searchedthem,” Kepkey says.

bars en toe is die hele huis in vlamme,” ver-tel Lenie.“Ek het net ‘brandweer!’ gegil en die bure

het die brandweer gebel. Hulle was redelikgou hier, maar ek het geen idee hoe lank ditgevat het om die vuur te blus nie. Dit voelalles vir my nog soos ’n droom.”Dit voel vir Lenie of haar huis binne ’n

oogwink in ’n bouval verander het.Al wat teen Vrydagmiddag oor was, was

plek-plek dele van die dak en die mure, noupikswart, maar Lenie sê volgens die brand-weer kan selfs dié enige tyd intuimel.Net in een van die vyf slaapkamers was ’n

ongeskonde bedmet ’n paar pienk pantoffelsbo-op. Dit het gelyk asof die vlamme nie indie sitkamer uitgekom het nie, maar alleswas sopnat en daar het steeds water uit diedak gedrup.“Ek dink die geiser het gebars,” sê Lenie.Delores se twee tienerseuns was in die

nie die diere nie. Die seuns het die honde envoëltjies oor die bure se muur aangegee,” sêDelores. “Al wat ons kon red was die was-goedmandjies met vuil wasgoed.“As ek maar net daar was, sou dit nooit

gebeur het nie,” sê Raymond Kruger, eenvan Lenie se ooms. Hy deel ’n kamer met ’nander oom, wat ook nie daar was toe diebrand in hul kamer begin het nie.Lenie sê volgens die huisversekeringsas-

sessor, lyk dit asof ’n kortsluiting in die dakdie brand begin het. “Ten minste is ons ver-seker,maar dit lyk virmy die hele huis gaan

oorgebou moet word,” sê Delores.Volgens Lenie sou die versekering hulle

vergoed vir verblyf totdat die huis weer be-woonbaar is, maar teen Vrydagmiddag hetsy, haar twee dogters, hul mans, haar vyfkleinkinders en haar twee ooms nog geenheenkome gehad nie.“Maar dit maak nie saak nie, iets sal op-

kom. Die belangrikste is net dat niemandseergekry het nie,” sê Raymond.

Op een van die kamers se vloer lê ’n verbran­de Bybel, een van die min goed wat nieheeltmal deur die vuur verteer is nie.

The Parow Library will be closed from 12 Au-gust for major renovations. In the interim,a limited service will open at the Jan BurgerSports Complex in September, but patronsmay also use their cards at any City of CapeTown Library.

According to librarian Kathleen Laishley,the renovations will take at least sevenmonths to complete.

The entrance to the temporary library isin De Grendel Road, Parow North, and thelibrary will be in the clubhouse next to theswimming pool.

You will undoubtedly have seen themwhen driving in rural areas – graceful, well-balanced dogs with smooth coats in a multi-tude of colours and patterns over long, lean-muscled limbs.

If you have met one, you will almost cer-tainly remember their intelligence, alert-ness, friendliness and gentle natures.

The Africanis dog is a “landrace” – a re-sult of natural selection and adaptationthroughout the centuries.

Unlike a landrace, breeds such as grey-hounds or labradors have been created byhumans choosing specific traits such ashunting skill or fur colour. They are selec-tively bred to get a uniform behaviour andappearance. Some breeds were landracesbred in an attempt at standardisation.

However, as soon as you standardise alandrace with selective breeding it becomesa breed, not a landrace.

Africanis dogs are not uniform in appear-ance as it is an umbrella term for a few dif-ferent “strains”.

They are generally medium-sized with afunctional, slender build, wedge-shapedheads and long muzzles. Their short coatsare usually light-brown, but can be brindledor patched. Some also have a “ridgeback”.

A feature common to them all is theirhighly expressive faces and beautiful, soul-ful eyes ringed with black “eyeliner” mark-ings.

They are agile, hardy and fast, as well asvery alert and tend to have very few healthproblems.

But it is in the per-sonality category thatthe Africanis reallyexcels. Because theyhave evolved along-side people, they tendto be exceptionally

good-natured and even-tempered, as well asbeing loyal and protective.

The case against Ed Nolan, owner of theCity’s number one problem building, waspostponed to 2 September at the Parow Mu-nicipal Court in Beacon Way.

Nolan first appeared on 28 July to facecharges of failure to comply with the Prob-lem Building Bylaw.

46 Bedford Street in Parow West is current-ly rated the number one problem building inthe City of Cape Town, according to WayneAldridge, chief building inspector in charge

of finding and prosecuting owners of prob-lem buildings.

The house has been rented out to foreign-ers since 2008 and is in a state of dilapidationand over population, and multiple drug relat-ed arrests have been made there.

Should Nolan be found guilty, he could faceup to three years in prison or a R300 000 fine.

The city is currently investigating over 1300 possible problem buildings, but 46 Bed-ford is one of the first of which the owner fac-es charges, making this a bench mark casesince the Problem Building Bylaw was legis-lated in 2010.

Dís nou as die operasionele plan van dieVoortrekkerwegkorridorstadsverbete-ringsdistrik (VSVD) hieroor in Oktober inwerking tree.

Met dié plan gaan die VSVD talle van dieBellville-stadskern se parkeerareas oor-neem en bestuur, het Leonore van der Walt,wyksraadslid van wyk 2, bevestig.

“Benewens misdaad is ’n gemorsery,prostitusie, drankmisbruik en dwelmhan-del algemeen by al die parkeerterreine. Ag-gressiewe parkeeraanwysers is nog ’n pro-bleem,” sê sy. “Dit sal alles hokgeslaanword wanneer toegangsbeheer deur dieVSVD van Oktober af toegepas word.”

Van der Walt sê daar sal met die plan ookheelwat formele werkgeleenthede vir dieinformele parkeeraanwysers geskep word.

Gedragskode“Hulle sal ook opgelei word en aan ’n ge-

dragskode moet voldoen.”Sy sê die sewe parkeergebiede wat geraak

Derek Bock, bedryfsbestuurder van dieVSVD en Hardus Zevenster, ’n direksielidvan die Groter Tygerberg-vennootskap, hetreeds onderhand met diensverskaffers watparkeerterreine bestuur, sê Van der Walt.Bock sê die bestuur van enige openbarearea is baie belangrik vir stedelike vernu-wing. “Ons moet die basiese beginsels reg-kry en parkering is deel hiervan.”

Skoner en veiliger“Ons besef dat die publiek binnekort vir

parkering op sekere parkeerareas binnedie Bellville-sakekern gaan betaal, maarmet dit kom ook ’n skoner en veilige par-keerarea,” meen hy. Hy sê daar sal ook geen“aggressiewe bedelary” toegelaat word nie.

“Dit is belangrik om te onthou dat dieVSVD nie ’n sent uit die bestuur van dieparkeerareas sal maak nie; alles gaan netso teruggeploeg word om die parkeerareaveiliger en skoner te hou,” sê Bock.

Van der Walt sê die stadsraad het vroeërgoedkeuring gegee dat parkeergeld per uuren maandeliks gehef sal word. “Die tariewesal laag wees, omdat dit nog altyd gratisparkering was. ’n Finansiële haalbaarheid-studie word gedoen om vas te stel watter ta-riewe die beste sal wees.” Sy sê die verbeter-de parkeergebiede gaan gepatrolleer wordom sodoende beter misdaad te kan bekampen ook om ongemagtigde parkeeraanwy-sers uit te hou. Inwoners wat die inkomste-dienstekantoor besoek, sal nou maklikeparkering kan kry en ook veiliger voel.

Sy sê die “vuil toestand” van die parkeer-terrein oorkant die poskantoor sal ook ver-dwyn. Van die ander planne met die par-keerterreine sluit in dat die VSVD dit metbome sal verfraai, sê Van der Walt.

Op ’n nat wintersdag het die Tygerberg­dienssentrum vir Bejaardes en Mobiele Etes saam met dieTygerberg­Strewersvereniging se kinders en ouers en die plaaslike raadslid, Michael Britz, winters­Kersetes aan 200 kinders by Kalksteenfontein gaan uitdeel. Almal het in die gemeenskapsaalbymekaar gekom. Die kinders het heerlik saamgesing en toe gekuier. Die etes en lekkernye is metgroot geesdrif begroet en die Tygerberg­dienssentrum het groot waardering vir almal wat dieprojek meegemaak het, asook die skenkers wat gehelp het om die uitreikprojek moontlik te maak,sê Linda Louw, voorsitter van die sentrum. “Kalksteenfontein is een van die sentrum se voedings­projekte en ons glo dat ons met die weeklikse etes wat gegee word, ’n verskil aan baie hongerkindertjies maak,” sê sy. Die seniors van die Tygerberg­dienssentrum vir Bejaardes en Mobiele Etes het ’n oggend vanvermaak saam met die blinde orkes van Worcester en hul personeel geniet. Eers het die mond­fluitjie­trio gespeel en daarna die orkes. “Die bejaardes was by tye op hul voete en het op maatvan die musiek hande geklap. Hulle het nie net die vermaak geniet nie, maar ook geleer hoe dieblindes hul talente aanwend vir hul medemens. Hierdie oggend sal nog lank onthou word,” sêLinda Louw, bestuurder van die sentrum. ’n Piepklein waterskilpadjie het verledeweek sy opwagting gemaak op ’n teerpad inVierlanden, Durbanville.

Belinda Sharp, wat in Vierlanden woon,vertel dat sy verlede Woensdagmiddag kortvoor drie-uur die teer “sien beweeg het” toesy in Botterblomstraat ry – op pad om haarkinders by die skool te gaan haal.

Sy het die klein skilpadjie opgetel en in ’nskoendoos gesit, wat in die kar was. Dit wasskaars groter as ’n R5-muntstuk.

Terwyl sy ry, het die diertjie ’n aardigereuk afgeskei. “Dit het verskriklik gestink– kompleet soos seewater.” Sy het later ge-hoor dat waterskilpaaie kliere op hul agter-pote het, wat ’n stof afskei om hul vyande

af te skrik.Sy het ’n foto vir haar diereliefhebber-

broer, Bernard Voges van Langebaan, ge-stuur en hy het bevestig dis wel ’n waterskil-padjie. Die bekende avonturier en motive-ringspreker, Braam Malherbe, met wie sybevriend is, het ook bevestig dis ’n moeras-waterskilpadjie (marsh terrapin).

Oor hoe dit daar in die teerpad gekom het,kan ’n mens net bespiegel, sê Belinda. Daaris wel ’n dam daar naby op die hoek van Mur-ray- en Stuiwerstraat.

Malherbe gaan die diertjie nou aanneemen saam met sy ander eksotiese diere aan-hou tot dit groot genoeg is om vrygelaat teword.

Intussen voer Belinda die skilpadjie roumaalvleis en bly hy onder ’n stukkie boom-bas in ’n blyplek wat sy vir hom ingerig het.

A local businessman is setting out ona music adventure, having just re-leased his debut album, Verily, Verily.

Hyram Doolings, a Zevenwacht familyman, has roped in some of Cape Town’s fin-est musicians to help on the gospel albumhe launched in Kenridge this weekend.

“As a little boy I always wanted to sing,”Hyram says. His grandmother took him tochurch where she introduced him to thechoir master and it wasjust a few months be-fore he was singing so-lo.

“The choir used to situpstairs and the peopleused to turn their backsto see who this little boysinging is,” Hyram re-calls.

Almost 50 yearsdown the line, Hyram’sdesire to sing turned in-to a “huge desire towrite”, and that’s howVerily, Verily was born.

As a Capetonian, Hy-ram says he was alwaysfascinated by jazz, andhe always wanted tosing a “jazzy kind ofgospel”.

While he hopes to spread the message ofGod’s love, some of the songs are related tohis own struggles, which brought him clos-er to God.

As a child, Hyram was exposed to an alco-holic father and an abusive mother, andsinging was an escape for the young boywho once tried to commit suicide by jump-ing into a river.He was saved by his uncle,but that wasn’t the end of his near-death ex-periences. He got trapped in quicksand,nearly drowned, and was hit by a car, whichsaw him go through twelve operations andoccupational therapy to even out his mouth.

“Some of the songs are related to the suf-

fering of Jesus and I could somehow to re-late to that through my own suffering, butnothing compares to his suffering for me,”Hyram says.

While he points out that this theme isn’texplicitly laid out in the lyrics, it can befound in the “feeling of the music”.

Hyram’s grandmother used to often readthe Bible to him and his siblings and the al-bums’ name come from a scripture she wasparticularly fond of, John 5:24:“Verily, veri-ly, I say unto thee, except a man be born ofwater and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into

the kingdom of God.”He says it was his

grandmother’s readingthat eventually led tothe album, which he hasdedicated to her.Hyramsays he takes his hat offto the people whoworked with him onVer-ily, Verily. “It’s guys thathave really been in theindustry for a longtime.”

It’s with the help of hisfamily and the loyal peo-ple that surround him

that Hyram knows his business is in safehands while he pursues his music career.He felt, considering how tough the local mu-sic industry is, that he wanted to build a ca-reer and have some money in the bank be-fore taking on the music world.
