what can be done.The shopping centre, which is sit-

uated in the heart of Panorama, hasbecome a hotspot for vagrants whohave made an open space oppositethe mall their home and frequentlyloiter at the centre.

This poses a safety threat to theshoppers and even the Panorama,Welgelegen and Plattekloof (PWP)neighbourhood watch memberswho patrol the area.

On Tuesday one of the neighbour-

hood watch members was attackedwhen he tried to get a vagrant tomove from the Delmar Centrepremises.

“It was between 20:00 and 22:00when the incident happened,” saysthe member who wishes to remainanonymous.

“I asked the man to move awayfrom the premises and then he ran.I gave chase and he ran towards aset of bushes. I then ran after himand flashed my torch to see where

he went and suddenly he came atme with a knife. I had the radio inmy hand and called for backup. TheDistrict Watch and police camewithin minutes and the man was ar-rested and charged with riotous be-haviour.”

Rudi Krige, owner of Delmar Cen-tre, says he is fed up with having todeal with the vagrants.

“They are a nuisance to the shop-pers and they should be in somekind of shelter or something. This

is a continual problem.”Lynnette Norman, a committee

member for the PWP neighbour-hood watch, says a solution needsto be found immediately to dealwith this situation and that’s whythese meetings are being held.

“The vagrants do whatever theywant and it is unacceptable. Peo-ple’s lives are in danger and wemust ensure that all measures areput into place to better this.”

Vlok of the plot opposite the DelmarCentre which the vagrants havemade their home, were also presentat the meeting and said they willlook at putting up a “no trespass-ing” sign.

Mark Horstman, from DistrictWatch, says a fence should ratherbe put up around the property to en-

sure that the vagrants don’t gain ac-cess to it.

“The vagrants are loitering onthe property and the fence will pro-hibit them from entering the prop-erty.”

Constable BE Kleinhans, fromthe Parow police, agreed that thefence will be better to handle the va-

grant problem.“If only the

‘no trespass-ing’ sign is setup on the prop-erty, the va-

grants will still sleep there. The va-grants will be arrested but the own-ers of the property will have tomake a statement every time,which could be daily.”

The allegation of drugs being soldby the vagrants was also highlight-ed in the meeting.

Margo Cleland, from the PWPneighbourhood watch, says therehave been stories of the vagrantsselling drugs, even to NorthlinkCollege students.

“It is believed that the drugs arestashed under a stone and this is

something that will not be tolerat-ed.”

Gerhardt Riedeman, NorthlinkCollege’s facilities manager, sayswhen there is any suspicion that astudent is intoxicated tests aredone.

“We do drug testing when thereis a suspicion of drugs being used.And if the student is searched anddrugs are found on them then thepolice are contacted immediately.”

The next meeting will take placein two weeks to see how far planshave gone.

Kaptein Fienie Nimb, woordvoerder vandie Bellville-polisie, sê kleiner onderne-mings het in die afgelope tyd deurgeloop on-der die mans wat voor sluitingstyd by diepersele opdaag.

Ondernemings, waaronder ’n tandarts,dokter en prokureur in Bellville, Goodwooden Parow was reeds slagoffers van dié ro-wers.

“Die mans is baie netjies aangetrek en dradasse en baadjies,” sê sy. Hulle modus ope-randi is om kort voor sluitingstyd by die on-dernemings op te daag onder die voorwend-sel dat hulle ’n afspraak wil maak.

The role calls for a Grade 12, coupled with a Diploma/degree in Nursing withqualification as a Registered Nurse and registration with SANC. 2-3 years’ experiencewithin a supervisory position is a must, and computer proficiency (MS Office) isessential.

There is a wealth of talent at theLa Provence Old Age Home inWelgelegen.

More than 20 exhibitors of the oldagehomedisplayed their goods rang-ing from woodwork, embroidery,pottery, arts and crafts last week.

Val Cornes, the co-ordinator of theevent, says this is a good opportunityfor the seniors to show their talent.

“It’s so lovely to see their goods.All the exhibits are unique. This artexhibition means a lot to the peoplewho made the creations and every-one who sees it is amazed by theirwork.”

Kenni Botma’s exhibit was filledwith various woodwork, such ascars, clocks and chairs.

“I use the wood that people throwaway,” he says.

“I love to work with wood, it hasalways been a hobby of mine. Themore you get into it the more youlove it every day.”

He says he started with his woodcreations 20 years ago and always ex-

periments with something new.“I use different wood such asyellow wood, wild olive androoikrans and don’t paint anyof it to keep the natural look.”

Wilma Smit showcased heramazing paintings of her familyand favourite things.

“I started off painting all mygrandchildren. I started 12years ago after I retired and Ilove doing it.”

HettieHoniball had the cutestcards of all shapes and sizes inher exhibition as well as cuttingboards and magazine standswhich are uniquely painted.

“A lot of the products I pur-chased while I was overseas. Ido sell some of the cards whenI get a chance, but I do it for pureenjoyment.”

Evelyn Roy made a range ofpillows and table cloths withmagnificent embroidery, as well aspaintings and wood carvings.

“This is what I love to do, sewingand knitting has always been a pas-sion of mine and I have time on myhands now to finish the designs.”

Babsie Laxton uses imported ma-terials to do her embroidery, also onpillows, and knits teddy bears.

“It takes time but it is worth it,”she says.

“The end result is amazing.”Mariette Primic has been doing

her beading and embroidery formany years.

“I get my beads from all over CapeTown and Johannesburg. I try andget the best quality beads I can findso I can make good bracelets andchains. When I create a piece of jew-ellery I ensure that it has a specialmeaning – like each colour signifiesthe colours mentioned in a verse inthe Bible. I also cater for the seniorsas I know how difficult it to handlethe normal hooks, so I make clip-onbracelets.”

Monty Schmidt’s exhibitionshowcased her embroidery whichshe did on pillows and landscapes.

“These items I worked on since1989. I enjoy it but would neverthink of selling. I feel I would neverget the money’s worth.”

Antoinette Durr had a greatrange of pottery for people to see.

“I started off with paintingstones, but then I started with pot-tery and then I painted those. It’s agreat enjoyment. I advise all peopleto always do what they love.”

Die markgroei elke jaar in gewildheid en met die meeras 80 uitstallers wat hierdie jaar deelneem, be-loof die 2012-mark om nie teleur te stel nie. Uit-stallers sorg vir ’n wye verskeidenheid ge-skenke, gebak, droëvrugte, handwerk, plante,juweliersware, kunswerke en baie meer.

Die Herfsmark is een van die gemeente sebelangrikste fondsinsamelinggeleenthede.Die mark het sy ontstaan gehad toe die ge-meente besef dat inwoners nie net aan die ein-

de van die jaar ’n behoefte het aan ’n kwaliteit-mark nie, maar dat soortgelykte markte op an-der tye van die jaar ook kan werk.

Alle belangstellendes word genooi om die2012-Herfsmark te besoek wat in die Kerkkom-pleks, La Provanceweg 47, Welgelegen, van 7tot 12 Mei gehuisves word. Die mense in die boek se kwessies is baiealgemeen. Dit is waarmee baie mense in diemiddelfase van hul lewe worstel. Dit is dingesoos ’n buite-egtelikeverhouding, kinderswat almal uit die huis is, ’n sterfte in die fa-milie, ernstige siekte, werksverlies, ontnug-tering met die kerk of om skielik met die ge-volge van trauma in die kinderjare, soos mo-lestering, gekonfronteer te word. As hierdieemosies en krisisse nie aangespreek wordnie, kan dit tot diep depressie lei, verduide-lik Truida.

Self het haar eie, “nuwe” identiteit voort-gevloei uit die sink van haar huweliksboot-jie. “Ek moes my lewe uitsorteer en my eiekrag ontdek. Terwyl ek vir tien jaar net opkinders-grootmaak gekonsentreer het, hetek voeling verloor met wie ek is. Ek moesook my spirituele kant laat sin maak. Dieharde realiteit was vir my uitdagend,” ont-hou sy.

Haar ondervinding in haar terapie-prak-tyk, en haar eie moeilike pad na selfontdek-king, maak haar boek oor die selfontdek-kingspad in die middelfase, geloofwaardig.Sy het dit eerstehands ervaar. “Wat ek wilsê met Reis na Binne, is om eerstens tyd temaak vir introspeksie. En dis moeilik omtyd te kry. Daar’s deesdae altyd iets wat diegaping van alleentyd vul – selfoon, internet,TV.” Kom agter wat jy voel. Wat maak jougefrustreerd, bang, wat hou jou terug om jouideale te bereik. En wat laat jou sterk gevoe-

lens ervaar. Antwoorde op hierdie vrae be-hoort jou tot selfontdekking te lei en uitein-delik tot ‘n sinvolle lewe.

“Die wêreld is ekstroverties. Ons probeerander se lewens leef en wegsteek wat en wieons eintlik is, omdat dit nie vir die wêreldwerk nie. Groepsdruk vereis dat jy daar bui-te suksesvol, in beheer, en sterk moet wees.Daar’s nie plek vir leef na binne nie. So ver-loor ons maklik ons eie identiteit en vergeetwie ons is.”

Truida sê sinvolheid kan na ’n mens se le-we terugkeer. “Waag om kontrole oor te gee.Laat verlies toe. Moenie vashou aan ou pa-trone nie. Waag nuwe maniere van doen.Volg jou passie. Volg die stroom van jou eieenergie,” verduidelik sy. “Mense besef: Ek’sverbydiepeakvanmy lewe,maardis belang-rik om te besef jou optrede het ’n rimpelef-fek. Jou insigte, talente, omgee kan ander selewe permanent ten goede verander. Met eensinkan jy ’nvreemdelinghoopgee.Onsmoetverstaan dat ons mense beïnvloed en hulleweer vir ander. So maak ons die wêreld ’nbeter plek.”

Toe Luanne Mulder van Blommendal sebroer haar pols om in te skryf vir die Mej.Aarde-kompetisie (Miss Earth) wou syaanvanklik niks daarvan hoor nie. “Ekdoen nie skoonheidskompetisies nie,” sêLuanne. Toe sy eers uitvind waaroor diekompetisie gaan het sy haar mening ver-ander, want hierdie was iets waarmee sy’n verskil kon maak.

Luanne is een van honderde hoopvolleswat ingeskryf het vir dié kompetisie, maareen van slegs 10 streekfinaliste wat in diekompetisie gekies is.

Mej. Aarde Suid-Afrika is ’n program watdeur kennis jong Suid-Afrikaanse vroue be-magtig en ’n platform skep om ’n volhoubareverskil temaak indie stryd teendievernieti-ging van ons natuurlike erfenis.

Die kompetisie fokus op die bewusmakingvan die omgewing, wildlewe en die bewa-ring van die natuurlike nalatenskap in Suid-Afrika.

Alle deelnemers het ’n intense omgewings-werkwinkel gevolg oor kernkrag, die bewa-ring van seevoëls en elke individu se impakop die aarde.

Wes-Kaapse streeksdeelnemers is blootge-stel aan die probleme, oplossings en aksie-planne wat hulle sou implementeer indienhulle nasionale finaliste word.

Dié kompetisie is so reg in Luanne sekraal, want nie net is sy gaande oor die buite-lewe nie (’n gunsteling-tydverdryf is om methaar bergfiets te gaan ry, veral in Jonkers-hoek), maar sy is ook reeds 10 jaar ’n vegeta-riër. “Ek was ’n culture vulture op skool,” sêLuanne.

Oor die omgewing is sy passievol. “Ekdink nie ons waardeer genoeg wat ons hetnie. Ek kan dit nie hanteer as mense die na-tuur skade aandoen nie,” sê sy.

Haar liefde vir die natuur is deur haar ma,Riëtte, gekweek. “Sy het van jongs af vir onsgeleer om die aarde te beskerm. Lojaliteit eneerlikheid is nog twee eienskappe wat haarma hulle geleer het.

Luanne is ook passievol oor haar taal enkultuur.

Haar kêrel, Francois Louw, en vriende is

nog ’n groot prioriteit in haar lewe.“Ek geniet tyd saam met my vriende, maar

daar is ook tye wat ek dit geniet om my eieding te doen,” vertel sy. “Gelukkkig ver-staan Francois dit,” sê sy.

Sou sy die Mej. Aarde-kroon dra, sal sy be-slis betrokke raak by die bewaring van re-nosters en plaaslik sal sy haar steun gee aandie Suider-Afrikaanse stigting vir die be-skerming van seevoëls (Sanccob). Sy het juisonlangs saam met dié organisasie ’n groepmense wat ten bate van Sanccob van Gans-baai tot Simonstad gestap het, gaan verwel-kom.

Luanne is die afgelope jaar ’n trauma-be-rader en op Donderdae gee sy berading by’n private skool vir minderbevoorregte kin-ders in Franschhoek.

“Eintlik moet almal forseer word om ge-meenskapswerk te doen, want ’n mens besefnie hoe dankbaar jy moet wees vir wat jy hetnie,” sê sy.

Luanne sê sy dink mense is geneig om hul-self met vriende te vergelyk en wil dikwelsmeer hê as wat hulle het.

“Maar ’n mens het soveel as jy ouers hetwat vir jou omgee en jy uit ’n stabiele huiskom – dan het jy reeds soveel meer as baieander mense,” sê sy.

Finalis hou van natuur

Die Bellville­skoonheid, Luanne Mulder, is ’nstreeksfinalis in die Mej. Aarde Suid­Afrika­kompetisie.

We must not losebattle for rhinosIt seems as if we’re fighting a losing battlewhen it comes to protecting our rhinos.With 2012’s death toll at almost 200, oneshudders to think what the future holds.

As morbid as it may sound, extinctioncannot be ruled out any more. With SouthAfrica hosting 93 percent of the world’swhite rhino and about 40 percent of Afri-ca’s much rarer black rhino, the onus ison our government and nature conserva-tion to keep these animals safe. But it’s notthat easy – the poachers have becomemuch more organised and brutal.

It boggles the Western mind that theAsian demand for the animal’s horn isworth more than its weight in gold. Thestreet value of rhino horn has skyrocketedto $65 000/kg, against $52 500/kg of gold atcurrent spot prices.

Rhino horn has been used for centuriesin traditional Chinese medicine and aslong as there’s a demand, no rhino is safe.

The question is, what can Joe Public doto stop the poaching? Not much, except forsupporting worthy causes.

One such cause is the Rocking for Rhi-nos concert taking place this weekend out-side Durbanville. The proceeds will go tothe rehabilitation of a male rhino namedHiggins that lost 80 percent of his eyesightin a poaching attack at Fairy Glen Reservenear Cape Town. So why not make a differ-ence and have fun at the same time?

Sê tog liefsdankieIn Willie Ekron se brief (G’n beheer by on-gelukke, TygerBurger, 25 April) is hy dui-delik ontevrede oor verkeersbeamptes sevinnige reaksie op noodgevalle.

Vind hy dit ook ongerieflik om vir para-medici, ambulanse en brand-en-reddings-voertuie plek te maak, of is dit net vir blouligte?

Hy kla ook dat beamptes hulle radio’smoet gebruik, maar besef hy dat net eenradiokanaal die hele area van Goodwoodtot in Gordonsbaai dek? Ook dat ’n beamp-te wat deur verkeer moet kom, nie tyd hetom te klets nie?

Verder moet hulle blykbaar ook nie op’n ongelukstoneel gesels nie. Wel, dit iswat beamptes doen – so ook brandweer- enambulanspersoneel.

Mense moet met mekaar kommunikeerom orde aan ’n chaotiese toestand te pro-beer bring. Soms is daar personeel betrok-ke van ander areas of afdelings wat toeval-lig naby was. Ongelukstonele is nie byme-kaarkomplekke vir hulle nie. As hulledaar is, is dit vir ’n spesifieke doel.

Wees dankbaar vir hulle bereidwillig-heid om aandag te gee. Die beampte watop pad is om te help het ook geen idee wat-se chaos op hom wag as hy daar aankomnie. Daar moet beplan word hoe om so vin-nig moontlik die situasie te beveilig enverkeer te laat vloei.

Kaapstad se beamptes is goed opgeleide,professionele mense. Hulle is trots op wathulle doen.

As hulle skeef trap, word hulle strengberispe en kan hulle selfs hulle werk ver-loor en siviel aangekla word. Ek kan nie glo dat senior munisipale be-amptes en raadslede by en deur hierdie ge-boue se tuine beweeg en nie skaam raak virdiepatetiese toestandwaarindie eenspragti-ge tuine was nie. The DanceCraft Youth DanceChallenge 2012 quarter-finalswere held recently where theteenage contestants energetical-ly took to the dancefloor show-ing off their newly acquireddance moves.

While initially the youths, whohad never danced before, werenervous, their confidence grew asthe competition progressed andthey got accustomed to the lime-light.

Dancers from 14 schools took partin the competition, eight from thenorthern suburbs and six from theCBD and Blouberg area.

The quarter-finals of the competi-tion were held over two days on theweekend of 14 April.

On the Saturday schools fromBellville and Kuils River took to thefloor at a venue in Bellville with theother learners competing on Sun-day at the Green Point BowlingClub. In total some 250 guests com-prising parents and teachers fromthe competing schools attended theevents.

Contestants competed in one ball-room (quickstep), one slow Latin(rumba) and one fast Latin (mam-bo) dance. In the first six hours oftraining leading up to the quarter-finals, the contestants learned thebasic steps in the three dances andone variation, which included themambo cross-over, rumba under-arm turn and the quickstep cornerturn.

The atmosphere at both competi-

tions was very lively with the com-petition fierce.

However, it was the supporters ofParow High who ensured that theirschool is the current leader of theSpirit Cup after the first knock-outrounds in this popular competition,which hasTygerBurgeras its mediapartner.

“The situation with four of thecompeting schools is a bit compli-cated, as many of their coupleswithdrewduring the training,” saidMilanovic.

“As the rest of their contestantswere training regularly, and askedus to find a way to allow them tocompete, we made various combi-nations,” she explained.

The organisers chose to pair upCarlo Human who remained of Janvan Riebeeck with GhaafiethaAmoodien from Harold Cressy.They competed on behalf of HaroldCressy.

This couple along with the onlyother remaining couple of Harold

Cressy competed against MicaelanGovendor/Silvia Correia (the onlycouple from Bloubergrant Second-ary who finished training).

All three couples are goingthrough to the semi-finals.

St John’s Private entered fourcouples, of which only one couplefinished training. The withdrawalof the three other boys left the girlswithout partners.

“The girls really wanted to com-pete so we ‘borrowed’ three boysfrom Table View couples.”

The Table View boys will stillcompete with their school partnersfor their own school as well.

“We are still not sure how tojudge these combined couples, but

we will find a way. We just felt weshould not disappoint those whowere training regularly, workinghard and looking forward to com-peting,” Milanovic said.

Tygerberg is currently leading intotal school points with 6,48 points,followed by Chesterhouse (5,75) andDF Malan with 5,57 points.

The semi-finals will be held thisweekend (Saturday 5 May in Bel-lville and on Sunday 6 May in GreenPoint).

In the next round, one couplefrom each school will be eliminat-ed.

The best dancers will remain tolearn even flashier steps for the fi-nals later in May.

Aanhangers van Andriëtte Nor-man kan “’n lekker kuier” ver-wag by haar vertoning vandees-week by Die Boer.

Sy tree van vanaand (Woensdag)tot Vrydag by Die Boer op met haarorkes.

Andriëtte sê sy probeer altyd om’n verrassing in te gooi, veral methaar shows by Die Boer, en sal diéweek musiek van al drie haar al-bums sing, asook ouer liedjies.

Andriëtte het in 2007 ’n huishou-delike naam geword toe sy deel vandie Idols-kompetisie was.

Sy sê die kompetisie was ’n goeiewegspringplek vir haar sangloop-baan.

“As dit nie vir dit was nie, sou eknie vir ’n lewe kon gesing het nie,”sê sy.

Voor Idol, het Andriëtte as ’nskoonheidsterapeut gewerk en netby klein kompetisies en troues ge-sing. Nou is Andriëtte se dae om-trent vol. Sy sê sy werk tussen haarkantoor in Brackenfell, wat sy methaar agent Alice Gerber deel en

haar salon. Dit is in haar kantoordat sy en Alice haar dagboek en be-sprekings beplan.

Andriëtte doen baie onderhoudeen bestee elke dag ’n uur met haarpersoonlike afrigter in die gimnasi-um.

Sy is ook dikwels besig met liefda-digheidswerk. Andriëtte en Alicemonitor wat in die gemeenskap

aangaan om te sien waar sy betrok-ke kan raak.

Kinders en seniors is baie na aanAndriëtte se hart. “Hulle waardeerdit altyd so baie,” sê sy.

Sy het onlangs saam met die SAJeugkoor ’n liedjie opgeneem,“Sweef soos ’n arend”, vir hul CD.Sy het by die album se bekendstel-ling by Leeuwenhof opgetree, asookby hul konsert by Grand Arena.

Andriëtte het ’n besige tyd watvoorlê, met baie vertonings in dievooruitsig.

“Ek probeer om shows te doen inplekke waar ek nog nie gesing hetnie,” sê sy.

Sy beplan om onder meer Jef-freysbaai, Windhoek, Upington enPrieska in die volgende paar maan-de te besoek.

In Junie sal sy haar jongste al-bum,VatmyHoër,weervrystel,met’n nuwe verpakking.

In Oktober beplan sy om ’n splin-ternuwe album vry te stel.

Rudolph Maree, die groep sesanger, sê dat lirieke baie belang-rik is vir Tripjas. Hy sê elke per-soon in die gehoor moet ten min-ste een keer in hul show hoender-vleis kry.Danweethullehullehethul werk gedoen.

Tripjas al drie jaar saam, metReghardt van Rensburg op drom-me en Chris Nightingale op baski-taar.

Phonnie Burger, die groep senuwe kitaarspeler, speel nog net

’n paar weke vir Tripjas, maar isal klaar deel van die familie.

Die Tripjas-projek is vyf jaaraan die gang en die groep het albaie demo’s in hierdie tyd opge-neem, maar Rudolph sê hulle isversigting om nie soos baie anderjonger groepe te vinnig te “pop”nie.
