’n Sekerheidswag het ’n ligte besering aandie voet opgedoen as gevolg van skrapnel, sêCrous.
“Die verdagte, ’n 29-jarige man van

halfmiljoen rand se dwelms by ’n huis in dievooraanstaande woonbuurt Sonstraalhoog-te ontdek het.Dwelmverwante misdrywe vier hoogty in

Twee Brackenfell-leerders, KhanyaNdutza en Daniélle Groenewald, was ookgenomineer as beste byspeelsters.

An undercover sting by the Brackenfell po-lice’s crime intelligence unit resulted in thearrest of two suspects, one of whom is a fo-reign national, in a drughouse in Groenval-lei, which is also suspected to have beenused to store stolen goods. The house was raided by members of the
Brackenfell police, Maitland dog unit and
two other specialised units at 21:30 onThursday evening.“Property theft has been on the increase
in recent months, causing local police intel-ligence gatherers to intensify their focus onsuch crimes over the last fewmonths,” saidPolice spokesperson Warrant Officer EricaCrous.Crous says information gathered over al-
most two months led police to the house, which was then observed for some time be-
fore the clamp-down last week. Two people, a 38 year old man and 38 year
old woman were arrested at the house whe-re drugs and stolen goods were seized.“Police suspect that drugs were sold here
and stolen goods from areas such as Brac-kenfell delivered here,” she says. The pair appeared in the Bellville Magis-
trate’s Court on charges of possession ofdrugs, dealing indrugs andpossesionof sus-pected stolen goods.

An innovative group ofrecyclers are collect-ing, sorting and repur-
posing old and unwantedhousehold items not fit forresale.
Noel Ehrenreich and part-ner Justin Hurling startedNew Earth Recycling twoyears ago in thehopeof creat-ing jobs and conserving theenvironment at the sametime.
“We offer a free collectionand recycling service of bro-ken andunwanted ‘white ele-phant’ goods and furniture,”said Noel.
To this end, in April theduo launched their “residen-tial collection campaign” inthe Durbanville area.
The campaign has beenbearing fruit, said Noel. Somuch so they are now ex-panding intoBellville andbe-yond.
Helping the needyBut whatmakes their cam-
paign so special?Well, their team has joined
forces with a well-knownhigh-end furnishing compa-ny and through the cam-paign are donating part oftheir earnings to needyschools.
At least 50c per kilogramoftheir earnings go to selectedschools or charities.
“We have a sorting, mate-rials recovery and refurbish-ment facility in Parow Indus-tria where our team recycleall goods collected into differ-ent recyclable streams,” saidNoel.
The items are then eitherused as raw material for oth-er manufacturing processes,or turned into refurbishedunits.
“We literally turnwaste in-to a resource, diverting itaway from scarce landfillsites, which is an increasingproblem for our fast growingcity.”
The teamare accredited bythe City of Cape Town, hesaid.
“People who wish to refur-bish their homes and get ridof old furniture, appliancesor bric-a-brac can contact usto recycle these goods,” said
Noel.They also have a competi-
tion in which learners cansubmit a drawing or articleand win an iPad or digitalcamera, as well as an appli-ance discount voucher fromthe furnisher.
“We have been approach-ing schools in the area to par-ticipate in the initiativethrough their recycling com-mittee or representative, andhave been distributing flyersat homes,” said Noel.
Positive feedback“The feedback from partic-
ipating households has beenextremely positive. Theyconsider our service veryconvenient, professional andfor a good cause.
“We had one collectionwhere we provided our ser-vice to a disabled gentlemenliving on his own and at hisfather’s house.
“They have used our ser-vice repeatedly. Our crewhas also benefited from cook-ies baked specially for thecrew at one pick-up.”.
He said his company hascreated three job opportuni-ties so far andwill be employ-ing more people as the cam-paign grows.
“We will eventually create‘virtual’ bins for all the dis-tricts in Cape Town and keepa record of the volume col-lected, the number of organi-sations benefiting, employ-ment created, and so forth,”he said.
Collection days are cur-rently on Wednesdays andSaturdaysand theparticipat-ing household receives aR150 discount voucher toshop at the furnisher.
Learners who wish to par-ticipate in the competitioncan send a a drawing depict-ing recycling and conserva-tion or write an essay aboutrecycling (less than 500words).Types of items cartedaway includeunused fridges, washing machines, stoves, tumble dryers, dishwashers, microwaves, television sets, bed sets and any other un-wanted furniture.V More Details can be obtainedfrom www.newearthrecycling.co.za. Chess becomes available in XhosaMEC for culturalaffairs and sport,Anroux Maraiswatches aslearners fromHazendal PrimarySchool showtheir chess skills.PHOTOS: EARLHAUPT
EARL HAUPT@earlhaupt
Chess has becomemuchmore accessibleto Xhosa speaking people since the de-partment of cultural affairs and sport
(DCAS) in conjunction with Watu Kobese, handed over Xhosa chess books, the first oftheir kind, to four schools last week.Kobese spentmore than a year developing
the book, complete with authentic terminol-ogies, creating a new chess language forXhosa speakers. The ceremony, held at Hazendal Primary
School, saw the three other schools (Sopoka-ma Primary School, Masiphumelele Prima-ry School and Nomlinganiselo PrimarySchool) have the books handed over to themby Kobese and DCAS provincial ministerAnroux Marais.Kobese is one of the country’s foremost
chess players. He holds the title of interna-tional master and he has represented SouthAfrica internationally on numerous occa-sions.He started playing chess in 1972 after
learning of the “match of the century” be-tween Bobby Fischer of the United Statesand Boris Spassky of the then Soviet Union.“It (thematch) sparked the imagination of
the whole world and my dad and his friendswere draughts players and they shifted andthen played chess, but what brought me tochess was not the game but the energyaround the game. All the games are very vo-cal with guys making jokes and talking andthat is what I hope this book will achieve,”said Kobese.Kobese then pointed out the impact chess
has had on his life, something he hopes willbecome more common following the distri-bution of this book.“My biggest break came in 1990 when I got
a scholarship to go and study chess in Ger-many. I studied there for three years and aft-
er that I played professionally. In 2001 I wasAfrican champion and I have been SAchamp on six occasions. And I’m still play-ing as a member of the national team.”Kobese identified the need for a Xhosa
book on chess and worked together withDCAS to develop the Xhosa terminology forchess pieces and moves.“Basically the need for the book came
through interaction with various communi-ties and seeing that at a certain age therewas indeed aneed for such a book, especiallywhen you are trying to explain to a six-year-old who has not yet had real exposure to En-glish but is keen (to play chess). I got to thepointwhere Iwas losing the players in termsof their interest when I was simply explain-ing the pieces and the meaning of the pie-ces,” said Kobese.Kobese said although chess has become
standardised after its origins in India (Chat-uranga) in the 15th century, that even withthe European languages, the names of thepieces are not translated directly.“Even within the European languages the
pieces are a reflection of their dynamics.”English is seen as the universal language
in today’s society, but when trying to ex-plain chess in indigenous languages, newwords need to be created in order to makethe game more identifiable to someone notfamiliar with English.“So we have, for example, pieces: the rook
has been translated to a gun, but a big gun.Bishop is a spy in Xhosa and even the nameof chess has been changed or reinvented andis called intimba (check mate).”Kobese thanked DCAS and Advocate Lyn-
don Bouah, chief director of sport and recre-ation at DCAS in particular for helping tomake the book a reality.Bouah in turn thanked Kobese for coming
forward with this initiative and hoped itwould serve as a platform for the buddingchess masters of tomorrow.
The handing out of the first Xhosa chess book will enable a new generation of chess players tolearn the game in their mother tongue.

There seem to be quite a fewunfortunate dog attacksreported lately: dog vs dog, human vs dog, etc. The com-mon denominator here is atleast one dog off a leash. Comeon people, it’s not that difficult.Put your dog on a lead. I havedogs and I’m a huge dog loverbut would never walk them offleash.
My daughter was bitten bya dog belonging to an idiotdown the road and is emotio-nally scarred to the pointwhere she is now terrified ofstrange dogs. His dog continuesto roam the street unattended. The incident was reported, hewas warned, yet there has beenno change and the damage hasbeen done to my child.
I don’t blame the dog, Iblame the owner but willcertainly not hesitate to protectmyself or my children, by anymeans possible should any dogoff leash approach us in anagressive fashion. Would I alsobe charged with animalcruelty?
If you can’t be a responsibledog owner, get a goldfish.

A while ago you published aletter of mine (TB, 5 August) inconnection with the streetpeople, with the bold heading“Hose the People off theStreets”. I strongly object toyour heading as it creates acompletely false impression ofthe content of my letter. “FineSpray could act as Deterrent”would have been a far morehonest and less incitingheading.
In subsequent letters writtenby certain contributors this‘Hose the People off theStreets” heading is repeatedalongside my name. This
Fine mist not thesame as ‘hose’
creates the impression that itwas part of my original letterand that I am some kind ofcallous individual.
Obviously the intermittentfine water spray idea was to actas a deterrent and encouragethe street people to move awayfrom the shop doorways. In factthe spray used in veggie shopsis more of a mist than actualwater droplets.

I couldn’t agree more withElaine Soutar (“Kinders hard-loop steeds oor paaie”,TB, 12August). My husband and Itravel to work every morningin the Brackenfell industrialarea. Cars park on the pave-ments and pedestrians areforced to walk in the road.Ninety-nine percent of the timethey are wearing dark clothingand are just not easily seen.
It should become a require-ment for pedestrians (adultsand children) to wear someform of reflective clothingespecially on dark and wetwinter mornings. Even one ofthose sleeveless green luminousbib type vests would do thetrick. They would fold up smalland need little space to beavailable when needed again.
I saw a pedestrian with awhite rain suit, which is muchmore visible. It is not alwaysthe drivers’ fault, pedestriansand drivers need to worktogether for safety.

SLICE OF LIFE

Bust corruption with your phoneThe Justice Alliance of South Africa

Vir Mandela was daar nie ’n grys gebiedas dit kom by eerlikheid nie, sê sy.
Saam methaar was hy werklik gelukkig”.
La Grange het in Junie 2014 haar memoi-res “Good Morning, Mr Mandela” laat publi-seer waarin sy vertel van haar lewe saammet Mandela.
Die boek is in Desember van dieselfde jaaraangewys as 2014 se topverkoper in Suid-Afrika.

Artscape Theatre Centre is a hive ofstories this August and September incelebration of Heritage month.
Heritage Month means differentthings for different people but Artsca-pe is celebrating heritage by tellingstories and considering how narrati-ves are reflected orally, in writingand other creative forms.
Through various disciplines, Art-scape questions identity through a fo-cus on “who we are, what we are andwhat we have been”, encouraging pe-ople to reclaim and restore the impor-tant stories of our heritage, to chal-lenge misappropriations and find he-aling.
Some of the heritage festival high-lights include a new work, Inkundla,by Indoni Academy Dancers, whichlooks at the “theatre of life”, andSiembamba, a multilingual playwhich explores the life of a black do-mestic worker and the white childshe helped raise.
Choirs from around the provincewill sing alongside the Cape Philhar-monic Orchestra on Sunday 13 Sep-tember for the Western Cape ChoralMusic Association’s (WeCCMA) 2015Choral Music Eisteddfod.
Fans of more contemporary soundscan look forward to Zanne, Zoid andZolani with Zolani Mahola, KarenZoid and Zanne Stapelberg.
Back by popular demand, Izityhile-lo Zobuze by Lingua Franca will ex-plore the concept of circumstantialinheritance through sensationalpoetry and music while Words of Warby Anele Rusi will tell stories of her-itage and history through inspiringpoetry and songs of celebration.
Much of South Africa’s heritage istied up in stories from neighbouringcountries, a point proven by Bornaround Here, a production by Botswa-na’s Company@Maitisong. The worktells the often unknown story of Bot-swana and other neighbouring coun-tries’ contribution to the struggle forfreedom in South Africa through theeyes of a Botswana family.
Away from the stage, Artscape willhost a dialogue titled “ConnectingCreatives” on Heritage Day whileArtscape’s Tunnel (mural area bet-ween Artscape and Civic Centre Par-king) will become the backdrop forNgokomzekelisoWakhe (InHis Image)– a performance art installation onThursday 24 and Saturday 26 Septem-ber.V The festival runs from Thursday 27 Augustto Sunday 27 September. Tickets are available from Computicket or Artscape DialaSeat on 021 421 7695. Visit www.artscape.co.zafor more information.

Apart from the office administration andbake-for-profit courses, the centre also plansto launch a frail care course in the next quar-ter, she says.
“We are moving away from offering com-puter skills training in isolation, but rather
a more integrated approach offering a com-prehensive job readiness programme.
“Now all learners gain computer skillswith the life skills course, but also the keyskills needed to enter the job market.
“Candidates are more marketable and itenables us to assist them more effectivelywith placements,” says Gelderman.
The job readiness course, with its strongemphasis on guiding candidates on the jour-ney from unemployment to leading a mea-ningful life, has merged three courses whichwere previously run separately.
These are a pre-employment life skillscourse, a customer service and retail point-of-sale course, as well as an introduction tothe world of computers course.
This new format covers a period of threeintensive weeks of full-time training.
Eighty eight students completed this pro-gramme from January to June 2015.

An 83-year-old woman has one wish be-fore she departs thisworld – shewantsto meet her son who was taken from
her a day after she gave birth to him.Betty Maritz says her heart’s desire is to
meet her only child who should be 64-years-old this year. Maritz tells her heart-wren-ching story with desperate longing, sayingshe will only feel better once they reunite.“I was 19 when I fell pregnant. At the time
I lived with a woman in Retreat who tookme in as her own daughter. She eventuallynoticed I was pregnant. I was already in mysecond trimester,” she says.“She asked who the father was and I told
her. I suggested the guy come meet her aswell but she did not want to hear anythingof it. Not long after, the father of my childdid not contact me anymore,” Maritz says. She says on the day she gave birth she re-
members a midwife assisting with her deli-very at home. “After giving birth I was sotired and exhausted. All I know is I gave
birth to a boy who had a distinct birthmarkon his back. After the birth I was exhausted,my guardian mother said we could go the
next day to give my child’s details at the cli-nic,” she recalls. She says the next morning she was woken
up and told to wash her baby as well as hisclothes.“My guardian then offered to take my ba-
by to the clinic and have his details registe-red. I can’t read or write so I gave her mybaby as she offered her help,” Maritz says. When her guardian returned later that
afternoon, she came home drunk and wit-hout Maritz’s child. “I asked her where mychild was and all she said was: ‘Wat worryjy vir jou? Jou kind is vrek.’ (Why are youworried?Your child is dead). I couldn’t belie-ve it and I kept asking her where my childwas, but she gaveme the same response eachtime. Up until today I do not knowwhat hap-pened to my child on that day, but I have astrong suspicion that he was either sold orgiven away. I just want my child back,” Ma-ritz cries. She addsher search forher sonnever stop-
ped, but due to too few details she has hadno luck. “But I will continue,” she says.“I feel like I was robbed of being amother.
My son might be out there thinking I aban-doned him, but I just want to see him so Ican tell him that is not what happened.”

Still clean afterOppikoppi gigLOUISA STEYL
@lounotes
They might still be blowing dust out oftheir noses but The Vanilla are veryhappy at having played their first Op-
pikoppi festival together as a band. The fact they got booked to play the Gaut-
eng festival earlier this month is in itself abig deal for the band who have only beentogether since February.
“It was crazy,” says frontmanTyanOden-dal. “It was the first time we got to decorateour cases with ‘fragile’ stickers.”
It was the first time the band had flownsomewhere to perform, so they ran a compe-tition to take a fan along.
First they had to come up for the moneyfor the trip. The band threw an old-fash-ioned fund-raising show for family andfriends at their alma mater, De Kuilen HighSchool, complete with raffle tickets and hotdogs. “We went all out.”
ExcitedWhile The Vanilla were excited to play to
new audiences, they also used Oppikoppi asan opportunity to network with industryheavyweights and got a lot of positive feed-back.
“If the right people see you, that’s all thatmatters,” said bassist Jaen-Pierre Dowling.
Oppikoppi isn’t the only important festi-val to theband. The idea forTheVanillawasborn at Rocking the Daisies last year whenTyan and Jaen-Pierre joked about startinga band to “get the girls”.
It stayed a joke until earlier this yearwhen Tyan, who also plays for blues rockband The Ballistics, started writing morepop-inspired songs. He, Jaen-Pierre anddrummer Francois Keyser (also from TheBallistics), who have all known each otherfor years, started playing the songs togetherto see what came out.
“It just felt really natural,” says Jaen-Pierre. Eventually they got Barthlo Visagie
in on lead guitar and synth and carried onwriting.
The band describe their music as positiveand upbeat. “When people come to a gigthey should leave feeling happy,” Jaen-Pierre says.
Image consciousThey are very serious about their image.
On stage, they make sure they look present-able, believing their image and branding isas important as their music.
They created social media “hype” abouta month and a half before they released asingle and try to be as interactive as possi-ble online, giving fans the chance to get toknow them and invest in the band.
They approach the band from a businessperspective and try create brand awarenessby keeping their image consistent.
Jaen-Pierre says their target market ishigh school kids and the band has playeda few shows at Northern Suburbs schools.
The Vanilla documented their trip andfans will get to share their Oppikoppi expe-rience when they release the music videofor the single Little Thoughts in September. They’re also planning to release a profes-sionally recorded version of their song Sal-ly towards the end of the year, with the aimof “getting it on the radio”.
They’ll also be playing The River Repub-lic festival in Swellendam and Plett Rage inNovember.
The Vanilla will perform a free show withDum-Chang at Bohemia in Stellenbosch onThursday night. They’ll be opening for DieHeuwels Fantasties at Music Experience onWednesday 2 September. The Vanilla willbe doing an acoustic set and the perform-ance is free, but booking is essential, asthere are only 80 seats available. Call 021 5104591/2 or email [email protected] to book.

Following its resounding success in the Uni-ted States earlier this year, the SouthAfricantheatre classic Sizwe Banzi is Dead, directedby John Kani and starring Mncedisi Shaban-gu and Atandwa Kani, will be on stage at theBaxter Flipside until Saturday 12 September.
Forty years since John Kani and WinstonNtshona won the Best Actor Tony Award fortheir performances in the play, which theyco-created with Athol Fugard, and nearly adecade after the two theatre veterans repri-sed their roles at the Baxter in 2006, John Ka-ni returns as director, with his son in the rolewhich he made famous.
The award-winning iconic production isabout the universal struggle for human dig-nity. A black man in apartheid-era South Af-rica tries to overcome oppressive work regu-lations to support his family.
Kani and Ntshona performed the play in
South Africa, England and on Broadway, where they jointly won the coveted TonyAwards for Best Actor. In 1976 they were ar-rested by theApartheid Secret Police andwe-re detained in solitary confinement for 23days. They were only released because ofmassive demonstrations by the arts fraterni-ty all over the world.
“Sizwe Banzi is Dead became a statementthat articulated the anger of black peopleagainst these laws,” says the triple Honoura-ry Doctorate recipient, Kani. “It’s about theuniversal struggle of identity, of the dignityof the human being, and respect for humani-ty.”V Tickets cost R120 (matinee and Baxter Mondays),R130 Tuesday to Thursday and R150 over weekends. The Baxter Monday special applies where patrons payR120 which includes a meal and the performance. Leon Schuster will be back on screen at Ster-Kinekor Theatres from Friday with Schuks!Pay back the money!.After losing rugby’s holy grail, the Currie
Cup, Schuks (Leon Schuster) sets off on a hi-larious journey to pay for what he has done.In lieu of a R1 million fine, the Sports Minis-ter (Desmond Dube) offers Schuks a lifelineto create a documentary film that showsSouth Africa in a positive light. As the docu-mentary takes shape, the Currie Cup traver-ses its own perilous journey as it moves from
two clueless crooks, Bossie (Ivan Lucas) andSavage (Gerrit Schoonhoven), to an enterpri-sing traffic officer and a conniving pawnbro-ker, among others.True to form, the “documentary” features
a series of brand new candid camera gags forwhich Schuster is so well known, featuringunsuspecting South African citizens and ahost of famous personalities and celebrities- both past and currentV Visit www.sterkinekor.com or call Ticketline on 0861668 437 for more information.

With less than a month before the running of the second Sanlam Cape Town Marathon thewheels are set in motion to make it the first IAAF Golden label status race in South Africa.Ainsley Moos (Sanlam), George Grieve (CEO, Vital Health Food), Roxanne Moses (City of CapeTown), Elana Meyer (Sanlam Cape Town Marathon Ambassador), Jakes Jacobs (Western ProvinceAthletics)
With less than 30 days to go to one ofAfrica’s most prestigious road ra-ces, the Sanlam Cape Town Mara-
thon organisers are gearing up to present aspectacular eventwhen they host the secondedition of the relaunched running festivalon 20 September.
Havingmade anumber of announcementswith 60 days to go, the organisers are pleasedto reveal further information in relation tothis year’s event, as they aim to make histo-ry by becoming the first race in SouthAfricato achieve IAAF Gold label status.
A faster, flatter route has already beenconfirmed, and the course will be discussedin more detail along with any furtherchanges in the build-up to the race.
“Last year there were concerns over theroute which made the race a little slowerthan we had hoped, so this has been one ofthe main focus points ahead of this year’sevent,” says race ambassador Elana Meyer.
“Having earned Silver Label status at ourfirst attempt, we know we are on the righttrack, but there are some areas where we
know we can improve and various tweaksto the route could make a notable differencefor participants hoping to achieve personal
bests.”Meanwhile, after announcing a promising
local field and the first few elite internation-
al entries at the 60-day countdown to theevent, organisers confirmed the line-upwould be further boosted by a number ofglobal stars who would chase the men’s andwomen’s course records set last year byKen-yanWillyKiborKoitile (2:10:45) andEthiopi-an Meseret Mengistu Biru (2:30:57).
The men’s field will include nine IAAFGold Label Status athletes who have run un-der 2:10.00. David Kemboi Kiyeng, who fin-ished third at the 2009 Paris Marathon in2:06:26, holds the fastest personal best in therace, while three othermenhave also dippedunder 2:08:00.
The domestic contingent also includessome of the country’s most accomplishedathletes, including 43-year-old HendrickRamaala (2:06:55 PB), who won the 2004 NewYork Marathon, and 42-year-old ShadrackHoff (2:11:51), a formerSArecordholder over5 000m on the track. Both men have theirsights set on the veterans’ title. Shaun Mei-klejohn (53), who won the Comrades ultra-marathon in 1995, lines up in the masters’division.
Record participation is seeing the SpurSchools Mountain Bike League gaining mo-mentum in the Western Cape.
The third event of the season will be hos-ted at Montana High School’s brand newtrack in Worcester on Saturday 29 August.Custom designed byMeurant Botha of Ama-rider - a national trails advocacy organsisa-tion promoting trail opportunities aroundSouthernAfrica, the trackwill likely streng-thenMontana’s foothold in the league.
