Die daggakweekhuise in Joostenbergvlakte, waar die Kraaifonteinpolisie verlede week n klopjag gedoen het, was vol gesofistikeerde appa
raat.

I
n n klopjag verlede Donderdagoggend het die
Kraaifontein-polisie op daggakweekhuise in
Joostenbergvlakte toegeslaan, waar hulle drie
verdagtes in hegtenis geneem het en beslag gel het
op dagga met n straatwaarde van R200 000.
Brig. Gerda van Niekerk, stasiebevelvoerder, s
die groot sukses souniemoontlik geweeshet sonder
die samewerkingvandie plaaslike gemeenskapnie.
Dit was lede van die gemeenskap wat toenemen-
de vreemdebedrywighede opgelet het bydie perseel
en die polisie in kennis gestel het, s sy.
Die polisie het die perseel in Canarystraat vir n
ruk lank dopgehou voordat hulle toegeslaan het.
Ses polisiemanne van Kraaifontein se misdaad-
voorkomingseenheid het om sowat 13:00 op die per-
seel toegesak. Die perseel is deeglik deursoek en die
polisie het op houtkweekhuise afgekom, s sy.
Konst. NoloyisoRwexana van dieWes-Kaapse po-
lisie se media-kantoor het in n verklaring ges die
polisie het afgekom op daggaplante van verskillen-
de grotes en kweektoerusting, wat gesofistikeerde
ligte en waaiers ingesluit het.
Drie verdagtes, tussen die ouderdomme van 20
en 33, is in hegtenis geneem en het Maandag in die
Kuilsrivier-landdroshof verskyn op dwelmverwan-
te aanklagte, het hy gemeld.
Van Niekerk s die klopjag het glad verloop en
dat die verdagtes hulle nie probeer tesit het of op
die vlug probeer slaan het nie. Die saak word tans
deur die Valke ondersoek.

te-buurtwag, s hy en van die ander inwoners in die
gebied was baie verras met die klopjag.
Ek het absoluut niks vermoed nie en is was nog-
al baie verbaas dat so iets hier onder ons neuse aan-
gegaan het, s hy.
Dis n goeie ding dat ander lede van die gemeen-
skap dit wel opgelet het en onder die polisie se aan-
dag gebring het, s hy.

Fietsryer is deur n polisiebeampte
van sy fiets afgestamp toe ry die po-
lisieman van die toneel af weg.
Ds glo wat die fietsryer, n sakeman van
Oakglen (59), oorgekom het toe n adjudant-
offisier indie polisiemaghomopDonderdag
9 April omgestamp en weggery het.
Die fietsryer vertel: Ek het op die Ou
Paarl-pad gery. Op die hoek van Hadley en
Ou Paarl was daar n taxi besig om mense
af te laai by n rooi verkeerslig.
Daar was n silwer Nissan Almera voor
di taxi, maar die Almera het geen flikker-
ligte aangehad om te toonwaarheen hywou
draai nie.
Dis toe die lig groen raak en die fietsryer
verby die taxi langs die Almera ry, dat die
bestuurder van di kar skielik links begin
draai het.
Hy het my van die fiets afgery en aange-
ry. My oog het n stukkie van sy nommer-
plaat gevang. Hy het so 200 of 300 meter ver-
der na regs gedraai, vertel die fietsryer.
Di besluit toe om sy familie te bel, en dan
die man te volg. Die fietsryer vertel hy het
sy fiets opgetel en probeer regmaak so goed
hy kon; toe is hy agterna om by elke woon-
stelkompleks in te kyk vir die silwermotor.
Toe ek by die laaste kompleks inry, Villa
Bianco-woonstelle, staan sy kar daar mt
die groot, swart skraap waar hy my op die
fiets getref het, vertel die man.
Ek het die polisie gebel en hulle het uit-
gekom. Toe hulle daar kom, het hulle hom
gaan uithaal. Hy het n baie arrogante hou-
ding gehad. Waar het dit nogal gebeur?
wou hy weet.
Ek het kwaad geraak, want hy wou alles
ontken. Toe vra hy my: Nou hoekom het jy
nie in die fietsrybaan gery nie?; dan wt
hymoswat hy gedoenhet! Diswaar hyhom-
self vas-gepraat het, vertel die fietsryer.
My linkerhand is gebreek. Ek moes die
Saterdag (11 April) n operasie ondergaan
waartydens hulle n plaat in my hand gesit
het. Daar is skrape oral op my liggaam en
ek het ook my regterknie lelik seergemaak.
Toe hy begin kwaadword, het k ook kwaad
geword, s die fietsryer.
Hy s toe die polisie aan die vermeende
tref-en-trapper vra hoe lank terug hy symo-
tor gery het, het di glo ges een en n half-
uur.
Maar toe hulle aan sy enjinkap vat, was
dit nog vuurwarm!
Hy lieg, en ds n skande hys n polisie-
man!
Die fietsryer het n klag van tref-en-trap
en roekelose bestuur teen die polisielid aan-
hangig gemaak.
Ek gaan hom nog siviel ook vervolg. Ek
is amper 60. Di storie het my pyn en lyding
besorg. Hy het n rang in die polisie. Iemand
in sy posisie behoort mos van beter te ge-
weet het, s die fietsryer.
Di ding moet rugbaar gemaak word
maak nie saak wi dit is nie om te wys hoe
sommige wetstoepassers optree. Ek kon
dood gewees het.
Die 30-jarige polisieman se identiteit is
aan TygerBurger bekend, maar omdat hy
nog nie in n hof gepleit het op enige van die
aanklagte nie, mag dit nie bekend gemaak
word nie.
Die polisiebeampte het die geleentheid
om kommentaar te lewer, van die hand ge-
wys.
Ek het geen probleem om enigiets te ver-
duidelik nie, het hy aan TygerBurger ges,
en verneem of die koerant die fietsryer se
regsverteenwoordiger is.
Ek voel nie gemaklik om oor die foon te
praat nie, en kan nie enige verklarings gee
nie. Dankie dat julle my ingelig het. Sodra
die koerant uitkom, sal ek stappe doen deur
my eie regsverteenwoordiging, het hy ge-

Die adjudant-offisier is deel van n spesia-
le polisie-taakmag..

They say this City works for you, but if you

trated Kraaifontein resident told TygerBur-
ger last week.
The resident, who wishes to remain anony-
mous, says he has been trying to phone the
Brackenfell traffic and licensing department
for over a week.
I phoned every day from early morning,
but the phone just rings non-stop. There isnt
even an answering service to take a message
or direct calls elsewhere. Its like nobody
works there at all, he says.
I have to urgently renew my licence and
need information, but it seems the authorities
arentbothered, he adds.
Assistant chief Nicolaas Michaels from the
Brackenfell traffic office said the phone num-
ber had been changed in October last year. He
apologised for the inconvenience caused.

Ondernemende nutsman van Brac-
kenfell het verlede week in n jap-
trap n slimengoedkoophek-verstel-
ling ontwerp om koevoet-boewe van jou
voordeur af weg te hou.
Roan Mostert van Proteahoogte het met
die ontwerpvorendaggekomnadat nvrien-
din verlede Maandagaand amper onder n
inbraak deurgeloop het.
Dit was so agtuur se kant en sy was in
haar slaapkamer toe syhoorhoehaar seker-
heidshek kreun en kraak. Die inbreker het
probeer om haar hek met n koevoet af te
breek, maar is gelukkig die skrik op die lyf
gejaag toe n buurman hom gewaar het
voordat hy kon inkom, vertel Mostert.
Volgens die bure het hy weggejaag in n
silwer Polo in die rigting van Kuilsriver.
Toe Mostert die volgende dag na die hek
gaan kyk het, het die idee by hom posgevat.
Ek bou self hekke en het besef dat die
probleem nie by die hek self l nie, maar by
die slot.
Die area om die slot is die swakplek en
wanneer die inbreker sy koevoet daar tus-
sen die hek en die raam ofmuur indruk, het
hy genoeghefboomwerking omdie deur oop
te breek, verduidelik hy.

genoeg speling wees om die slot te breek
nie, s hy.

Die maklike verstelling bestaan uit n
staalbalk en n plat staalkant wat oor me-
kaar toevou. Ek glo daaraan omdinge een-
voudig te hou en dis n eenvoudige ontwerp
maar ek is oortuig daarvan dat dit sal
werk, s hy.
Hy wys uit dat die nuwe
hekgeen spasie laat vir enige
instrument om ingedruk te
word nie.
Die geheim met enige se-
kerheidshek is om dit so
moeilik moonlik te maak vir
nmisdadiger om in te kom,
s hy.
Die sogenaamde koevoet-
bendes (crowbar gangs) het
die afgelope paar jaar dime-

koevoete of soortgelyke in-
strumente afbreek. Dit het

le van inbrake aan Tyger-
Burger gerapporteer.

Kraaifontein bekendgestel.
Die geboorte van Afriqua-Promosies is n
droom wat die plaaslike skrywer, Elias P.
Nel, al jare lank koester om die letterkunde
te bevorder.
Die beweging sal n forum daarstel vir nu-
we skrywers en digters omhulwerkmetme-
kaar te deel, sowel as om lewe te gee aan
oomGoljatTross, n karakteruit eenvanNel
se bundels, Bek Sonner Brieke.
Natuurlik het die nimlike oompie Gol-
tross ook Saterdagaand sy verskyning ge-
maak in die Voortrekkersaal in Kraaifton-
tein, waar die bekendstelling deur sowat 150
gaste bygewoon was. Sy stories, n eienaar-
dige lospraat, vaspraat en liegstories in
die unieke dialek van Verneukpan, het die
gehoor deurentyd aan die lag gehou.
Ander bekendes soos Dianne Ferrus, Ba-

goed gekomplimenteer, het Nel na die af-
loop van die aand ges.

fter three decades among books, the
head librarian at Kraaifontein Libra-
ry recently decided to call it a day.
Despite the technological advances, the
role of libraries hasnt changed much, says
Nelia van Zyl. For the staff, all the work
is now so much easier and for patrons the
catalogue is more accessible.
You can still travel theworld twice over,
meet the famous saints and sinners, poets
and artists, kings and queens, old stars and
hopeful beginners. You can gowhereno one
has gone before, learn secrets from writers
and cooks all with one library card and
access to the wonderful world of books.
Nelia started at Central Library in May
1987,moved to Sea Point and in 1992was ap-
pointed head librarian at Kraaifontein Li-
brary. Becoming a librarian gave her an op-
portunity to apply her skills, knowledge
and creativity, she says.
What I enjoy most about my job are the
patrons. To entertain them, whether on
desk duty or on the stage, to listen to them
and to give them advice and send them out
of the library with happiness in their he-
arts.
Nelia is a popular storyteller and reader
and shes often invited to entertain senior
citizens and children at a variety of organi-
sations. When shes not reading, she is wri-
ting especially for children. I used towri-
te for radio and television while I was rai-
sing my children and I have also published
some stories recently. Fortunately I belong
to a very supportive writers group called
Die Fynbosskrywers, she said.

and special projects, Belinda Walker, cong-
ratulated Nelia on her long service.
This City works because of dedicated
and committed employees like Nelia van
Zyl. Our librarians play an integral part in
creating opportunities which broaden the
horizons and imaginations of our young re-
sidents. We are grateful for their service
and wish Nelia well on her adventures
said Walker.

Bekende in maatskaplike werkkrin-
ge het verlede Dinsdagoggend ter
nouer dood ontkom nadat sy in die
vlammehel in haar brandende huis in Dur-
banville vasgekeer was.
Dit is net die genade van die Heilige
Gees, het dr. Mariana de Jager (57) n die
voorval ges.
Sy is gestremd gelaat n n wrede aanval
ophaar inMei 2009 byhaar huis in die Paarl.
Rowers het haar verskeie kere met n mes
gesteek en vir dood agter gelaat. Sy is n die
voorval n hemipleeg (lam aan die een kant)
en ontvang steeds fisioterapie vir haar bese-
rings. Sy is onlangs ongeskik verklaar.
Mariana het, toe sy van harde geluide by
haar huis in die Morgenzicht-woonkom-
pleks in The Hillstraat wakker geword het,
eers gedink dis inbrekers en van angs dood-
stil in haar bed bly l.
Sy het eers n n ruk besef haar huis is aan
diebrand toe sydie rook ruik enhet toe opge-
staan. Ek het die kamerdeur probeer oop-
maak, maar kon dit glad nie oopkry nie. Die
rook het my toe oorval en ek is venster toe
vir vars lug.
Dit was seker van die vakuum wat dit in
die brandende huis geskep het, het sy ges.
Omstanders het die volgende dag aan Ty-
gerBurger ges dis n bestiering van God
dat sy nie die deur van die slaapkamer kon
oopkry nie, omdat die res van die huis reeds
in ligte laaiewas endie rookenvlammehaar
sou verswelg het.
Sy het ook nie in haar hoofslaapkamer
soos gewoonlik geslaap nie, maar in n
spaarkamer, wat verder weg gele is van
waar die brand vermoedelik ontstaan het.
Sy het ook besluit om die deur toe te maak,
omdat sy bangwas haar katmaak haar wak-
ker, wat ook haar redding was.
Lede van die Durbanville-polisie, konst.
Jean-Pierre Goussard en sers. Heinrich Ma-
rais, het hul hande verbrand in hul pogings
om die Spaanse diefwering aan die buite-
kant van haar kamervenster oop te buig
eers met n tuinvurk en stuk metaalbank en
uiteindelik sukses behaal met n koevoet.
Hullemoes die venster stukkend slaan om
Mariana deur die opening te trek. Albei poli-
siebeamptes is hospitaal toe vir behandeling
vir die brandwonde aan hul hande.
In die redding is haar slaapklere buiten
haar selfoon, haar enigste oorblywende be-
sitting stukkend geskeur en haar rug het
skraapwonde opgedoen.Mariana is deur pa-
ramedici op die toneel suurstof toegedien en
na die MediClinic Durbanville vervoer. Sy
is later die dag ontslaan.
Die hele huis en alles wat sy besit is in
puin gel. Sy bly tans in n gastehuis.
Ook die aangrensende buitekamer van die
bure, waarin hul seun gebly het, is verwoes.
Volgens die buurvrou, Bonny Gruel, het sy
wakker geword van n harde geluid. Sy het
flitsende ligte gesien en gedink dis haar dog-
ter, Angela, se motor wat gesteel word, en
haar gaan wakker maak.
Hulle het toe die glas hoor breek en op die-
selfde oomblik het Angela se 18-jarige seun,
Tyler, uit sy buitekamer met n hokkiestok
aangehardloop gekom.
Ons het swart rook uit die kamer se dak
sien kom en besef dit brand. Gruel sr. se
man het die brandweer ontbied. Hulle was
baie vinnig, binne vyf minute, hier, het sy
ges.
Tyler en nog n buurseun het die veilig-
heidshek na die binnehof, waar Mariana se
slaapkamervenster gele is, oopgebreek.
Al die bure het by die huis saamgedrom.
Frikkie Cloete, haar buurman aan die ander
kant, vertel hy het ook van die geraas ver-
moedelik van die daktels wat bars en afval
wakker geword. Hy het met sy tuinslang
die vlamme probeer blus.
Mariana se broers, Pieter enHennie de Ja-
ger vanRiversdal, het hulle van daar gehaas
om Mariana te kom bystaan.
Mariana, voorheen n senior lektor aan
die departement maatskaplike werk van die
Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland, was van
1996 tot 2014 in Kaapstad, Uitenhage en Port
Elizabethwerksaam as berader in n private
praktyk.
DIe huis in die Morgenzichtkompleks in Durbanville Hills is heeltemal verwoes.

atre tomorrow (Thursday) inGiven to fly.
Presented by Project 021, the producti-
on tells the story of a not so typicalCape
Flats family with five daughters.
Their father, Sidney, is scarred by the
hurts and disappointments of an oppres-
sive past while their mother, Brenda, is
the pillar of strength and provides the sa-
nity in a household with five young wo-
men who are not afraid to speak their
minds.
When issues such as drug abuse and
crime hit close to home, the family is
thrust into the realities of the environ-
ment from which Sidney has been trying
to protect them.
Despite its dramatic content, Given to
fly is filled with humour and street-wise
wit.
The cast includes high school learners
from Wynberg, Lotus River, Belhar,
Kuils River, Bellville South, Khayelitsha,
Ravensmead, Elsies River andHeideveld.
Given to fly is the first production from
Project 021, a registered NPO which was
established to develop young people
through creative arts. Understanding the
importance of developing creative abili-
ties, the organisation creates opportuni-
ties to develop and showcase young ta-
lent.

ith his striking good looks, sincerity
and touching life story, an intrepid
young journalist from Northpine
reached the Top 50 of this years Mr South
Africa finals.
Chilton Mellem entered the competition
to share his life story in order to encourage
others.
I did not live an easy life
and I feel through sharing my
story I can hearten others who
are going through a tough
time, he said last week.
Myparents couldnot afford
to giveme a tertiary education
and I therefore had to work to
put myself through varsity,
he says.
This he did by answering tel-
ephones for his head of depart-
ment at the institution where
he studiedduringhis first year
of studies.
I also worked 12 hour shifts
in a call centre duringmyholi-
days. It was really hard and I sometimes felt
like giving up, but I am glad I didnt because
today I have a degree which no one can take
away fromme. He graduated with a Bache-
lorDegree of Technology in journalism from
the Cape Peninsula University of Technolo-
gy last week.
There have been other challenges I have
faced in life and I think Iwill be able to empa-
thise with a lot of people, he says. Chilton
currently works as a journalist and in his
free time enjoys fencing, theatre and litera-
ture.
My passions are all things creative and
I live for the arts. My love for opera and the
fine arts comes frommy late father who was
an opera singer. I also love good literature
and poetry. My father taught me how to
write a poem when I was 14 and by the time
I was 16, one of my poems was published in
an anthology called Facets of Life.
The community canhelpChiltonmotivate
others through his life experiences.
I believe the Mr SA organisation will be
able to give me a platform to
help others and will put me in
a position to uplift people
where needed, especially the
youth, he says.
After reaching the Top 50, fi-
nalists will be given assign-
ments and tasks and people
will be able to vote for their fa-
vourite finalists.
The final 12 will be an-
nounced during a special tele-
vision broadcast later this
year.
Chilton says he has a soft
spot for his local community.
I joined a local organisation
called Be The Difference,
which is mainly as a feeding scheme for
those in need. I am also a member of the
Brackenfell Lions Club. In my teens I joined
theAlphaLeos, so I thought it natural to con-
tinue my service to the community as an
adult. I was taught that charity begins at
home and I am glad to servemy community.
I also worked as an intern at TygerBurger,
reporting on community issues, which I en-
joyed thoroughly. I hope to get back into
community reporting again, he adds.

April. I recall some letters last
year and remember a group of
protesters with placards calling
for closure of the circus which
is again on tour.
I agree with some of your
remarks but not all. You have
your right to say what you
feel. I would like to ask if you
feel the same way, and would
write to all media here and in
South Africa to put a stop to
some of the following places of
amusement.
The Aquarium at the V&A
Waterfront. Think of all the
sealife in their glass tronke
and that magnificent shark
swimming round and round in
its tronk getting fed what its
given. The ocean where it
should be is possibly 100
metres away. Then we can go
to Hout Bay to the World of
Birds and see all those animals
in their tronke. They have
Black eagles and others there
permanent in draadhokke
who can see the blue sky and
mountains close by but cannot
soar to hunt and catch their
own prey. Monkey World
Somerset West, the lion park
and so we can go on, even to a
well known nursery who keep
a few animals in a cooped up
space. Perhaps for selfsugtige

However, many people can
take their children and grand-
children to see the animals for
a day of fun. Go and see the
smiles and happiness it brings
to the children. Also, they
create employment.
I personally, and Im sure
there are many others, would
like to urge Maclarens circus
and others Ive mentioned, to
keep up the good they do and
the pleasure they bring to
many who are not able to go to
the Kruger and Etosha Parks.

you that I am disputing a water
bill of over R7000.
I disagree with the statement
that a water meter cannot jump
and an intermittent fault would

If a foreign object in the
water lodges in the counter
mechanism, when it dislodges,
the mechanism suddenly rotates
at high speed and can skip a
gear tooth without leaving any
evidence because the gear teeth
are plastic and the foreign

and it was finally discovered
that the geyser overflow pipe
was pouring directly into a
drain which was not easily
visible. A plumber sorted out
the geyser and solved the
problem and rerouted the
overflow pipe, but I had to pay
for the water wasted.

geld uit jou maak. Dit het in
die stad gebeur, maar ek weet
daar is ook in Bellville sulke
mense. Pasop vir hulle as jy nie
elke dag van hulle gebruik
maak nie.

share blame
What message are we sending our
children when the top cop in the prov-
ince faces suspension after charges of
corruption are levelled at him?
Western Cape police commissioner
Arno Lamoer and three senior officers
appeared in court and are facing suspec-
sion on 109 counts including corruption,
money laundering and racketeering, with
a Cape businessman.
These are officers who, filling the
highest policing position in the province,
should be beyond reproach to the
extent that a parking ticket could not be
held to their names.
Yet daily we are faced with stories
about police officers flouting the law.
The very men and women who are
meant to protect us, are committing
crimes and endangering others.
Where are the days when becoming a
police officer was an honour, a calling for
only the bravest and most trustworthy?
Perhaps it has seeped in from our
society, where breaking the law is so
widespread it has become the norm.
How often do we think nothing of
jaywalking, driving after drinking or
keeping money found on the street?
We turn a blind eye to drug dealing
and gangsterism, quick to pull our
curtains closed or avert our faces.
We should not only hold our police
officers accountable, reporting their
failures to uphold the law, but also our
community members, friends and family.
The fight against corruption is the
responsibility of each and every one of
us.

This was at the heart of a media briefing
last Wednesday when the Citys mayco
member for utility services, Ernest Son-
nenberg, officially launched the first of four
robotic crawlers at the Water Technical
Operations Centre (WTOC) in Bellville.
This new staff member of ours will get
some brothers and sisters very soon, Son-
nenberg said about the other robots cur-
rently being assembled in Germany.
The new robot is simply referred to as
robotic crawler for the function it will
perform: scouring the Citys piping infra-
structure for faults and obstructions, not
much unlike a medical endoscopy.
Wecouldnt call him Wall-e thats that
names already taken by our water mas-
cot, Sonnenberg joked.
You can send the camera in at least
400 metres deep, he said of theR2.4 million
four-wheelers.
The remote-controlleddevices each carry
a 10 x optical zoom and 12 x digital zoom
camera, that will emit the robots under-
ground footage to a specially adapted van.
The data obtained by the crawlers will be
sent to a central database containing infor-
mation for a number of linked pipe net-
works.
GavinNunn,SouthAfricandistributor of
the robotic crawler technology and crawler
operator, explained that all of the robots
parts were interdependent.
He said different combinations of the
crawlerwouldbeused for different-sizedpi-
pes.
A project manager for the robot tender
explained that the system was waterproof
up to one bar pressure.
Through a hand-held tablet, one can see
the amount of dirt and cracks in a pipe as
well as joint displacements, Deen Willi-
ams said.
He said the hand-held controller would
give the operator full control over all the
crawlers camera functions, making it easy
to manoevre inside the pipes.
Sonnenberg added that at a cost of about
R300 000 to fix a burst pipe, the crawlerswe-
re an investment.
This investment will see significant sa-
vings in the years to come as the crawler
will assist the city in doing proactive main-
tenance, Sonnenberg said.
The northern suburbs have of late been
under siege from burst pipes of which the
infrastructural integrity has been weake-
ned by age.

tricity demand, computer equipment is

they can also be a lifesaver if your hard

len.
If possible, invest in an offsite backup
system.Data backups are kept safe on se-
cure servers and can be accessed wher-
ever you have an Internet connection.
Invest in Uninterruptible Power Supplies
(UPS)
In the event of a power failure or load
shedding, a UPS gives users time to exit
applications they are working on and
save their work before they safely shut
down their PCs. Even if youhave genera-
tors, theyll take a few seconds to kick in
after a power failure aUPSwill prevent
them from losing power before youve
saved your work.
A backup power inverter system is an-
other option. For less than R10 000 you
can find one that will keep your routers,
a couple of computers and some lights
going for a few hours.
Switch off all PCs not performing
critical functions
Any data that is open on a PC is at risk
of being damaged or corrupted in the
event of a power failure. For that reason,
you need to get into the habit of closing
applications and shutting down desktop
computers when you are not using them
for a while.
Switch off PCs and unplug them
To reduce the risk of damage to hard-
ware, switch off your PCs and unplug
them from the main power source when
power cuts hit. Otherwise, power surges
when electricity is restored could dam-
age your hardware.
Consider investing in a power bank
A power bank can be invaluable for
managing your business when there is
load shedding. These portable chargers
let you top up the battery of your USB-
powered mobile devices so you can keep
goingwhen there is a long power outage.
