There’s some active athletes at the Ath-lone School of theBlindwhohavemadetheir school very proud.
Forty athletes from the school in BellvilleSouth brought in a haul ofmedalswhen theyrepresentedWPSport for thePhysicallyDis-abled at the Annual Nedbank NationalChampionships for the Physically Disabledand Visually Impaired.Zelda Hansen, chairperson of the sports
committee at the school, said that they werevery proud of their athletes at the prestigi-ous event which took place in Stellenboschfrom 29March to 2 April. especially since allregions from South Africa were representedat the event.“The athletes took part in athletics, foot-
ball, tandem cycling, judo for the blind andgoalball (a game specifically designed for thevisually impaired which is playedwithballswith bells inside),” she said.“These athletes had magnificent perfor-
mances and achieved 51 medals: 35 gold, 12silver and 4 bronze at the Championships.“Our top achiever was Claudia Pienaar
who won the 100m and 200m in athletics, aswell as the 500mand 2000m track, 12 km timetrial and 24km road race in tandemcycling.”
Holistic learningShe explained that sport at the school
plays a huge role in the lives of all learners.“Herewebelieve in educating the learners
holistically. Although they have huge chal-lenges to overcome, no obstacle will be toobig for them, especially in sport.“Our learners admire former Athlone
School learners, Paralympic medalists Hil-
ton Langenhoven and Jonathan Ntutu whoboth took part in the past two Paralympicswith great success.“These two are really an inspiration to all
of us at the school and they still play a bigpart in our success. Recently Hilton donatednine pairs of spikes to our sprinters here atschool for use at the past championships,”she said.
FundingWhile she is happy with their achieve-
ments she feels that the community and lo-cal business can play a bigger part in assis-ting the school’s sport programme.“Our community and corporate compa-
nies can, as part of their social responsibili-ties, play a big part assisting our learners,as sport for the disabled can really get expen-sive.“Wewill in return be an advertisement for
companies with logos displayed on donatedclothing or equipment.“Goalball, which is an indoor sport, requi-
res specific protective gear like knee pads, elbowpads, specially designed balls, and clo-thing as players need to dive on the floor todefend the ball.“Tandem cycling is also a headachewhere
special cycling shoes are a must and the ap-parel is also extremely difficult to get at costprice.“So we have lots of needs and would like
partners to assist us with 380 learners whoare all urged to partake in sport, it’s a greatboost to their confidence,” she concluded.V For further information about the sports programme call Zelda Hansen on 083 426 6671, Cecil Opperman on 083 483 1184, or Fletcher Fisher (Principal)at 021 95 12236.V Pictures on page 2.

The health ministry of theWestern Capehas again urged patients to be aware thatthere is a national shortfall in the supplyof polio and measles vaccines.Western Cape government health is
managing the available stock in the pro-vince to reduce the impact as far as possi-ble, a media release from the office of mi-nister Theuns Botha, MEC for health, stated on Thursday.“In theWestern Cape we are doing our
best to manage the stock situation withthe available stocks.“We will keep our patients informed.
In the meantime patients should contacttheir local healthcare facilities to enqui-re about the availability of stock,” Bothaurged the public.“Should stocknot be available immedi-
ately, please ensure that the child is im-
munised as soon as stock returns to nor-mal,” Botha said.As an interim arrangement, vaccines
are being re-distributed between Wes-tern Cape facilities to maintain the avai-lability of vaccines at all facilities and re-duce the impact as far as possible.According to a letter from the Biovac
Institute, the national supplier, 1.8 milli-on doses of measles vaccines will be deli-vered to the national department of he-alth by the end of this month.More than three million doses of polio
vaccines were not released by the sup-plier as the vaccine vial monitor was outof specification and could not be relea-sed.Replacement polio vaccines stock is

hupstoot kry weens groot aanvraag.Kerrievis is ’n tradisionele Kaapse ge-
snoek was Donderdag reeds R120.

KENNISGEWING VANSUBRAADSVERGADERINGS: APRIL 2014

The lack of plants on the dusty streets ofMdantsane in the Eastern Cape is what mayhave cultivated Asanda Mlungwana’s lovefor greenery.
This ambitious young lady who now livesin Delft is hoping to use her skills as a horti-culturist to make a differencee in the world.
Asanda has just graduated with a NationalDiploma in Horticulture from the Cape Pen-insula University of Technology (CPUT), butshe says it’s only the start of her education.
She is serious about this journey because
horticulturists apply their knowledge, skills, and technologies used to grow plantsfor food and non-food purposes such as cos-metic, personal or social needs. Their workinvolves plant propagation and cultivationwith the aim of improving plant growth, yield, quality, nutritional value, and resis-tance to insects, diseases, and environmen-tal stresses.
Raised in Mdantsane, she is part of a fami-ly of three brothers and one sister who wereall raised by their single mom.
In Mdantsane they lived in a shack withno electricity and had to walk three kilome-tres to fetch water.
“We never had a stable home, we movedfrom area to area because we didn’t haveour own place to stay, but despite that I havenever failed a single grade from primary tohigh school,” she says.
“In 2006 our father passed away due to acar accident and this caused a lot of strainand difficulties in the family. As a result oneof my brothers ended up dropping out ofschool and another one failingmatric,” said Asanda.
In 2008 they moved to Delftwhere they are currently stay-ing. In October 2010, the yearAsanda matriculated withexemptioni at RC High schoolin Elsies River, her motherlost her job due to stress andage.
“I didn’t get the opportunityto experience matric ball asthere was no money,” shesaid.
She was the first in the fami-ly to pass grade 12 and she gotaccepted to study horticultureat CPUT.
“In January of that year Ididn’t have the required regi-stration fee but because I passed well I wasawarded the CPUT SRC bursary and it co-vered the rest of my registration fees. CPUTis equipped with excellent facilities whichI took great advantage of,” said Asanda.
She was awarded the NSFAS loan to pur-
sue her studies for three years.“I was working hard so that it may be con-
verted to a bursary. I am proud to say thatdespite all odds I have never failed a singlemodule on my diploma level and I have ear-ned a few distinctions, and been one of thetop achievers in class.
Now I am currently studying my BTech inHorticulture,” said Asanda.
To cap it all it was no AprilFool’s prank on 1 April whenshe received an e-mail statingthat she was awarded an all-expenses paid bursary by theNRF (National ResearchFoundation) for her BTechstudies.
“When I look back I realizedthat working hard does payoff and I admire how far I havecome and what I have become. To think that I once lookeddown on myself, saying Iwasn’t made for success.” shereflects.
“Despite everything I havenever lost hope and alwaysbelieved in God, and alwaystold myself that it was up to
me to change my unfortunate circumstan-stances at home.
“Next year I am planning to find work andalso continue with my studies and do myMasters.
“My message to youth is: DON’T give up.”

Learners at Bishop Lavis Senior Secondarywere encouraged to make learning a priori-ty in their lives at their recent Awards Eve-ning at the school.
Former learner at the school GrahamSie-britz, nowapastor in the community, spokewith pride of the foundation that the schoolafforded him to make a success of his lifebut it came at the cost of hard work and dis-cipline.
“In 1981 I started here and will always re-member the friendships, the fun but it wasalso a time in our country’s history whenwe had to sacrifice the importance of schoolfor the struggle against a brutal racist andviolent system, Apartheid,” he said.
“Our dream as young activists was thatone day we would llive in a society wherewe all are equal and where there be equalopportunities for all.
“On 6Aprilwe celebrated the lives ofmenwho gave their lives for our freedom. Onesuch man was SolomonMahlangu, a youngcadre of the armed wing, Umkhonto we Siz-we, who was executed on the 6 April 1979at the tender age of 23 for supposedly eng-aging in ‘terrorist’ activities and murder.
“His only crime was his deep love for hispeople, his commitment and dedication tothe noble ideal of freedom, human dignityand happiness of the people.
“His words before his execution still ringtrue: My blood will nourish the tree thatwill bear the fruits of freedom. Tell my peo-ple that I love them.Theymust continue thefight.”
Siebritz also told them about another ca-dre that paidwithhis life,AshleyKriel, whowas killed by police in Cape Town on 9 July1987 for his role in advocating anti-apart-heid actions.
On his release from prison in February1990, Nelson Mandela acknowledged Ash-ley Kriel’s sacrifice for the freedom strug-gle.
“These sacrifices were made so that youcan live in a society free of oppression andracism,” continued Siebritz.
“So that all of you are able to achieve yourpositive potential in life.”

Preparations have been completed andthe finer details have been ironed outfor what is expected to be the most exci-
ting Metropolitan u-19 Premier Cup tourna-ment to date.
South Africa’s most prestigious u-19 foot-ball festival kicks off at Erica Park in Belhartoday (Wednesday) at 15:30, with a clash bet-ween local rivals Beacon Spurs and Masidla-le.
It is the first of five matches on the openingday, culminating in host club Bayhill Unitedmeeting Glendene United at 19:15. The tour-nament runs from 16 to 21 April, with the fi-nal scheduled for 15:00 on Family Day.
The event features the best qualifiers from
the Western Cape region, along with someof the top academies, junior PSL teams fromaround the country and a guest club fromKenya, and has been a proving ground forsome of Bafana Bafana’s biggest stars sinceits inception 26 years ago.
Memorable occasion“All the groundwork has been laid and we
are looking forward to the best ever Metro-politan u-19 Premier Cup,” said BelindaFaulkner, “I’d like to thank our partners,Bayhill United and the local organising com-mittee, as well as the City of Cape Town, fortheir sterling efforts behind the scenes to en-sure a memorable occasion for both playersand spectators.”
To get the tournament well and truly up
and running, a glittering opening ceremony, including a march past by all the teams, en-tertainment from a local dance troupe anda spectacular fireworks display, has beenplanned to light up the evening sky on GoodFriday (18 April) from 19:00. This will be fol-lowed by the official opening game, one ofthe most keenly anticipated matches of thegroup phase between Ajax Cape Town andASD Academy.
The group stage of the tournament runsuntil lunch time on Saturday 19 April, andthe 16 qualifiers will commence the knoc-kout rounds later that afternoon. The quar-ter finals take place on the morning of Sun-day 20 April with the winners contestingtheir respective semi-finals at 17:00 and 19:00later the same day. In between, the crowd

spectators to enjoy in the lead up to theGrand Final on Family Day (12 April), inclu-ding the ever-popular All Stars curtain rai-ser where some of the great names of the pastroll back the years to the delight of the peo-ple packed into Erica Park.

ste wenslag in vier jaar.
