With most golfers vying for the num-ber one spot held by Tiger Woods, ayoung golfer is following in the foot-

steps of Trevor Immelman on the junior golfscene.

Tristan Galant (12) from Belhar is nostranger to winning despite his age and hasjust emulated the senior SA golfer by beco-ming one of only a few junior golfers to tamethe Fish River course thrice in the juniorranks.

His latest achievement came last monthwhen he successfully defended his title atthe Fish River Challenge. He is now to de-fend his national title in Johannesburg laterthis year.

His Dad,Martin, who is his coach and alsoheads up coaching for WP development ex-plained, that at the prizegiving they weretold that Immelman was the last junior golf-er to come out tops at the course three timesin a row.

“As an 11-year-old Tristan first played thechallenge for under-13’s in 2013 and wonthat,” he said.

International tournaments“Later that year hewas there again for the

SA Championships and now he has done itagain. It was tough for him this year, sha-ring the lead on the first daybut then comingin under pressure to eventuallywin by threestrokes.”

With preparations and practice underwayfor defending his SA title later this year, fur-ther exciting news is that the young golferhas been invited to take part in a tourna-ment in Scotland next month.

Martin saidthe opportunity for him to par-ticipate in a World Series golf tournament

was “very exciting news” but they needed“some financial help or sponsorship to gethim there”.

“I’ve never pushed or forced Tristan intothe game, but I see how much he has grownto love it and enjoy playing, so I want to givehim as much encouragement and motivati-on as possible. Part of that is playing tourna-ments here in South Africa, but the real testis getting him out to all the major juniorevents across the world.

“This has been a testing ground for all themajor professionals and as a junior he willget the chance to understand what it’s liketo take to the world stage with his abilities.”

Family supportThis week remained a busy week for the

young golfer who is in grade 7 at Erica Pri-mary inBelhar, as hewas playing in the u-13championships in Bellville.

“For me the best part is the support of myfamily, their encouragement at all timesand, most importantly, I love the game,”says Tristan.

Martin also wants to grow the sport in hiscommunity but needs help.

“I amtryingmybest at themoment.Unfor-tunately golf is not a cheap sport and I needhelp to keep youngsters here once they getplaying. There are already a few I am hel-ping but feel that with more support I couldget more youth interested,”says Martin.

“It’s not just about the sport but about get-ting them to realise their capabilities andpo-tential. For golf on the whole it could alsomean a lot because overseas they have somany good professionals rising through theranks of good foundation programmes.

Youngsters were getting into the swim ofthings when the city hosted a communityyouth swimming gala in Elsies River re-cently.More than 200 young swimmers aged

between 10 and 16 who currently partici-pate in swimming programmes at the Pa-rowValley, ParowNorth, Elsies andRuy-terwacht Swimming Pools, showed offtheir abilities.They have been training for the past

few weeks with lifeguards and the swim-ming pool facility officers.The gala, held at the Elsies River Swim-

ming Pool, formed part of the city’s Sport,Recreation and Amenities Department’sLearn to Swim programmes that are hos-ted throughout the summer season eachyear.“A very large percentage of children in

Cape Town cannot swim and do not haveaccess to water education programmes,”said city mayoral committee member for

community services and special projects,Belinda Walker.“The City regularly hosts these Learn

to Swim programmes to try and preventdrowning incidents. With approximately460 drowning incidents reported annual-ly in South Africa, Learn to Swim pro-grammes are a priority for the Sport, Re-creation and Amenties Department.”Many people are prevented from lear-

ning to swim due to a lack of access toswimming pools.“The City is committed to providing in-

creased access to swimming pools and be-aches aswell as the programmes necessa-ry for residents to develop water safetyand swimming skills.“This is part of the City’s vision of a sa-

In one week four railway police stations,including the Bellville unit, made a num-ber of arrests during clampdown operati-

ons.The operations covered Bellville, Cape

Town, Philippi and Retreat stations fromSunday 30 March to Sunday 6 April as partof a drive to ensure commuter safety, saidColonel Thembinkosi Kinana, a provincialpolice spokesperson.He said during patrols in trains and along

stations, stop-and-search procedures wereconducted and a number of suspects arre-sted on charges ranging fromassault to rapeto robbery andmalicious damage to proper-ty.Onearrest at theBellville station followed

a suspect being found in possession of coun-terfeit R100 notes, he said.

ClampdownKinana said a total of 28 suspects were ar-

rested for carrying tik, dagga, heroine,man-drax or khat on their person.Two suspects at Bellville were found to be

in possession of dangerous weapons – kni-ves – at the Bellville station and two atKleinvlei, among other related arrests, hesaid. For lesser transgressions such as uri-nating in public, illegally crossing the rail-way tracks, holding a train door open whilethe train is in motion, and not possessinga valid train ticket, a number of people re-ceived so-called J534 fines.“A vehicle, Mazda 323, registration num-

berCA923443,was stolen inDurbanville andwas recovered by the railway police mem-bers.“In total 86 suspects were either arrested

or received a J534 in the rail environment.Drugs and other goods to the value of a totalof R39 871 were recovered,” Kinana said.“Approximately 750 000 commuters make

use of the train on a daily basis and are poli-ced by the railway police. There are approx-imately 688 train trips during the day that

are policed jointly by railway police mem-bers and metrorail protection services andtheir contracted security members.”He said 485 trains were patrolled, 3 975 pe-

ople were searched, 103 vehicles were sear-ched, 1 431 visits to rail stations and 173 footpatrols were conducted.Metorail released a statement last week

saying they have begun seriously clampingdown on transgressors.

Safe service“We will arrest and prosecute anyone

caught hanging on the outside of the train– this includes those people that staff rideour trains between stations” said Mosen-ngwa Mofi, PRASA’s CEO.“Our message is clear: Metrorail will not

tolerate dangerous and unsafe travel practi-ces.We have onmany occasions agreed thatcurrently, our service is not to our custo-mer’s needs in terms of on-time performan-ce and reliability,” Mofi said.“At the heart of it, we as Prasa Rail want

to run a safe and efficient service while stillundergoing major improvements and mo-dernisation that will, in time, be able to res-pond to customer expectations.“Until such time,wewill not condoneuns-

afe travel in the name of overcrowding andour trainswill not leave the platform if com-

muters are not securely inside the trainwith closed doors,” Mofi said.Reported incidents of vandalism included

238 deaths andmore than 2 000 asset-relatedcrimes amounting to 189 incidents permonth.“The direct cost of repairs and replace-

Members of The Settlers High Dyna-mix jazz band recently rode the crestof a musical tsunami when they got

to perform alongside international jazz gre-ats, Shakatak.

Prior to the fantastic opportunity, thegroup were armed with hands-on showbizknowledge when they completed a coursefor arts and culture focus schools fromacross the Western Cape.

Craig Parks, a coordinator of the CapeTown International Jazz Festival YouthTraining and Development Programme, ex-plained that through the programme lear-ners were taught about the “behind the sce-nes” side of the music industry, with the fo-cus on putting together a festival.

The four-week programme culminated ina concert by the ten participating schools onSunday 23 March.

These schools included The Settlers,Groote Schuur, South Peninsula, Wynberg,Heathfield, Chris Hani and Belhar HighSchools, as well as participation by learnersfrom the Cape Music Institute, Crystal Hou-se Academy and the Intyholo Schools Pro-ject.

A sea of peopleAs part of the programme, the schools we-

re invited to be part of the Cape Town JazzFestival, with the chance to play on one ofthe festival stages.

They are treated like any other artist,Craig said.

“I promise you, the stars get made here,”he said.

Tracey Appolis, the Dynamix’s band di-rector, said three of the band members –Keenan Jacobs, Jodi Fredericks and Dami-an Kamineth – were selected through theprogramme to perform in the Schools AllStar Superband.

This band then went on to perform at theCape Town International Jazz Festival FreeConcert at Green Market Square on Wed-nesday 26 March.

“They were overwhelmed by the sea of pe-ople and enjoyed entertaining the crowd,”Tracey said.

A few days later the All Stars got to openfor international band Shakatak at the Sun-day After Jazz Concert at MaynardvillePark on Sunday 30 March.

Dynamix band member Jodi Fredericks(18) toldTygerBurgerhow exciting the expe-rience was.

“Wow! Wow! And wow again! Really, whatan honour. I mean Shakatak has been co-ming on for years. They’re legends, and tohave shared the same stage was an extremehonour. Truly a blessing,” Jodi said.

Tracey said this was the biggest stage theband had ever performed on.

“They have worked extremelyhard...They have achieved a lot and impro-ved significantly in a short space of time,”she said.

“These young musicians have broughtgood credit to the school, I am very proudof them, proud to be their teacher, and I amlooking forward to a year filled with manymore musical experiences and growth,” ent-hused Tracey.

Jodi’s mom, Renee Sellidon, said she hadhigh hopes for her daughter’s musical ca-reer.

Churches are getting together for the El-sies River Prayer Initiative taking placeuntil 13 April.

This initiative calls on all churches inthe area to support this long overdue initi-ative that will be going into areas affectedby crime. Bishop Manny Niekerk one ofthe organisers pointed out that the key fo-cus of this initiative is to go out and prayin these areas.

“We will abstain from marches withbanners and posters, neither will we havemeetings with gangsters or seek any con-frontation. This is about the power of pra-yer to bring peace and safety to ourneighbourhoods.”

Die Stad het onlangs sy kosepbe-groting bekend gemaak te middevan die talle uitgawes waarvoordié munisipale hoof self voorsie-ning moet maak.

Só het Johan van der Merwe,voorsitter van die Stad se porte-feuljekomitee oor finanies, gesê.

“Salarisse (van stadsamptena-re) is verhoog, só ook is Eskom setariewe; die Stad het uitgawes virhuur, brandstof, voertuie – alles ismeer,” sê hy.TygerBurger het reeds in die

uitgawe van 2 April oor die jong-ste verhogings in tariewe verslaggedoen (“Rate hike in line withconsumer inflation”), en lesers in-gelig oor wat om te verwag.

Hiervolgens is die Stad se kapi-tale begroting van R6 miljard, en

operasionele begroting vanR27,8 miljard reeds op Maandag24 Maart aan raadslede voorgelêvir kommentaar teen Maandag 7April.

“Die finale begroting sal aan dieeinde van Mei goedgekeur word,met ingang op 1 Julie,” het hy ge-sê.

Van der Merwe sê van die tienstadsdepartemente sal “elk inset-te lewer oor wat hulle nodig het indie begroting”.

Hy sê daar is R700 000 afgestaanaan elk van die 110 wyke vir wyk-sprojekte, wat byvoorbeeld in-sluit spoedkalmering, straatligteen om sportvelde op te knap.

“Saam met die begroting gaanook tariewe en beleide. Een vandié beleide is die sogenaamde‘deernisbeleid’. Hiervolgens krybehoeftiges ‘afslag’ van die Stad,”het hy gesê.

“Sodra die konsepbegrotinggoedgekeur is, sal daar gekykword na hoe die beleid aangepasis om hulpbehoewendes te help,”het hy gesê.

Hy noem ook dat daar weer ge-kyk is na hoe faktore soos bevol-kingsgroei en vandalisme byvoor-beeld die stadskoffers geraak het.

“Dís alles faktore wat die Stadgeld kos, en enige mens kan diesomme doen,” het hy gesê.

Volgens dié 2014/2015-voorge-stelde begroting is die groeikoersper stadsdiens effens minder asdie vorige boekjaar s’n, maarsteeds in ooreenstemming met in-flasiegroei.

Hy sê belasting is verhoog met6 % (teenoor 6,10 % in 2013), elek-trisiteit met 7,6 % (teenoor 7,86 %in 2013), water en sanitasie met8 % (teenoor 9,53 % in 2013) envaste afval met 5,9 %.

Hundreds of Western Cape youth are ta-king part in an one year internship pro-gramme as part of a provincial govern-ment project.

Minster for Finance, Economic Develop-ment and Tourism, Alan Winde, welcomedthe group of interns during a ceremonylast week, all matriculants from across theprovince, to the 2014 Premier’s Advance-ment for Youth (PAY) project.

The welcoming ceremony was held onFriday 4 April at the Western Cape SportSchool in Kuils River.

In a statement released last week Windesaid that the Western Cape governmentwill invest a further R27 million this yearin the work experience internship formatrculants, through the PAY Project.

The PAY Project was established by Pre-

mier Helen Zille in 2011 and is managedby the Department of the Premier.

On Monday 776 interns started their on-e-year internships at one of Western Capegovernment’s 13 departments.

“This is a great opportunity for our yo-ung people to obtain the on-the-job experi-ence they need to get their first footholdinto the economy.

“Our goal is to ensure that all youth ha-ve access to learning and employment op-portunities so that they can make a mea-ningful contribution to the economy andensure that they live better lives.

“We’re serious about skills developmentand over the next three years we will beinvesting over R300 million in a range ofthese initiatives,” Winde explained.

Hawelose mense wat onder die Elsies-kraal-brug in Ruyterwacht woon, het al-les in ’n brand verloor, ook hul identi-teitsdokumente.

Mario Lottering (39) sê hy sal nou niekan stem vir ’n beter lewe nie. “Ek glodaaraan dat ’n mens moet stem as jy joulewe wil verbeter, maar hoe kan ek son-der ’n identiteitsdokument stem?”

Lottering, wat in dromme krap om aandie lewe te bly, sê sy hele lewe lê nou inpuin. “’nMensmaakmosmaar besittingsbymekaar soos jy aangaan, so ek het da-rem ’n paar goedjies gehad. Ek weet niewat gebeur het nie. Toe ons uitgaan omte gaan skarrel, het ek seker gemaak mykerse is dood. Ons het ook nie eintlik vy-ande hier rond nie, so ek dink nie iemandsal doelbewus die plek aan die brand ge-steek het nie,” sê Lottering.

Hy sêhulle is gelukkig om te lewe. “Watsou gebeur het as ons hier was toe diebrand uitgebreek het? Ek is net dankbaarek enmymeisiewas nie hier toe dit beginbrand het. Hier bly ook ’n vrouwat swan-ger is. Die ding kon lelik gewees het,” sêLottering.

Met TygerBurger se besoek het ver-skeie verbygangers gesê dit is goed datdie blyplekke onder die brug verwoes is.Lottering sê dit maak baie seer as mensehulle uitskel. “Ons pla nie mense nie enek weet ook nie van misdaad wat al hiergepleeg is nie. Ons soek ook net beskut-ting teen die reën.”

Sers. Esmarelda Pheifer, polisie-woordvoerder van die Elsiesrivier-poli-sie, wat ook Ruyterwacht bedien, sê diepolisie het nog nooit enige klagte ontvangoor die brugbewoners nie. “Ons het nieeens ’n klag gekry dat daar ’n brand wasnie,” sê Pheifer.

Rowers, glo van Elsiesrivier, voer ’nskrikbewind in dié duikweg, wat inwonersvan Ruyterwacht gebruik om by winkels inVoortrekkerweg uit te kom. Veral vroue enbejaardes word geteiken.

Henrico van Wyk, ’n Rastafariër watgroente verkoop aan die Voortrekkerweg-kant van die duikweg, sê hy is keelvol virdie rowers. “Hul hande moet afgekap word,want dit is vir niks goed nie,” sê ’n hewigontstelde Van Wyk.

Hy het al by geleentheid die wind van ’nrower, wat ’n skoolkind se Blackberry-sel-foon wou steel, met ’n sak aartappels uitge-slaan en die foon teruggekry.

Die afgelope week was dit wéér sulke tyd.“Drie vandie jongenshet bymykomstaan

Mikel Hail, ’n stalletjie-eienaar, sê dit isdie jongens van Elsiesrivier wat kom moei-likheid maak in Ruyterwacht. “Dié gemeen-skap is eintlik baie rustig, maar dit is diemanne van die ander kant wat kommoeilik-heidmaak.Ekhetnognie self iets gesiennie,maar ek hoor die laaste ruk baie stories vangeweld en rowery hier. Die skollies gaanmaak dat mense nie meer wil winkels toegaan nie,” sê Hail.

An era when sport played a big part inthe community was rememberedwhen Maitland Giants Baseball Club

hosted a reunion last week.Former star players spoke about the game

with fond memories of the enjoyment thatit brought to them as players, and most im-portantly, the positive impact it had on themas juniors taking the lessons of discipline in-to their adult lives.Whilemany of those playersmay have left

the Maitland area and spread across thePeninsula, it was obvious that the “Giants”retained a special place in their hearts.This event was the brainchild of Miles Oc-

tober, a former player who rose through theranks from junior level, and wants to giveback to his community through a new orga-nisation Play Sport4Life (PS4L).“PS4L is a new sport for development ven-

ture based in the Kensington/Factreton/Maitland areas that wants to revive sport inthe area,” he says.“We organised this event because wewan-

ted to highlight how important sport was inthe community andwewanted to honour so-me of the club’s former greats who were in-ducted into the club’s Hall of Fame.“It’s important thatwe showour apprecia-

tion for the role that these guys played in so

many lives.”While the evening was well attended and

saw former players from many areas get to-gether for the first time, there was also a bigsurprise for them.“Kenny Roman, the club star pitcher from

the 1970s, was flown in from Australia to at-tend the event and surprised birthday boyon the night Danny Page, when he walkedin with a huge Maitland Giants birthday ca-ke,” continues Miles.“This was very special for so many of the

members because Kenny was one of thestars of our teams and he shared some of thehighlights ofhis playingdayswith thegathe-ring.”Miles was very serious about the goals of

Play Sport4Life in his home suburb.“We want to revive sport in the communi-

ty as a means to deal with the social issuesplaguing it – rampant drug abuse, gang vio-lence and crime.
