EVICTION: 10 ARRESTED AMID VIOLENT PROTESTS
Land grab lawlessnessLand grab lawlessnessRICHARD ROBERTS
@richardjohn_rj
Violent protest and vandalism dominat-ed the streets of Kalkfontein this pastweekend, resulting in the arrest of ten
people. The arrests, police say, follow the damage
to private property in the Hamilton Estatehousing development. The commotion started early Saturday
when lawenforcement officers andanti-landinvasion personnel moved into Kalkfonteinto removewood and iron structures illegallyerected on an open piece of land.
RetaliationThe residents, the majority of whomwere
from Vrygrond, retaliated by burning tyresand setting fire to six houses in the nearbyprivate Hamilton Estate development.Roads surrounding the area also had to beclosed and traffic redirected after the dis-gruntled evictees started throwing stones at
police.KuilsRiver police station commanderCol-
onel Pieter Galant told TygerBurger the vio-lence reached boiling point on Saturday.“We received a call informing us that peo-
ple were invading the land,” said Galant.“Several houses and tyres were set alight.
Our vehicles also had stones thrown at themand were badly damaged,” he said. Galantsaid criminal cases were opened at the sta-tion.“We arrested about 10 people for public vi-
olence,” he said.Electricity cables were also damaged.“We ask that residents remain calm. We
will continue to monitor the situation,” Ga-lant said. The ten suspects arrested appeared in the
Kuils River Magistrate’s Court on Monday.Alton Payne, chairman of the local com-
munity police forum who was on the scene, said people had to run for their lives whenthey came under attack.“We had to rush out of there.”
Payne, together with local ward council-lors and provincialminister of safety and se-curity Dan Plato, addressed communitymembers.“Wewent to the area because the property
owners of Hamilton Estate had to make acase against the people who had damagedtheir property,” said Payne.
Damage doneTygerBurgerwas informed that teenagers
as young as 15-years-old were involved inhelping to set the houses alight. The houses, according to a reliable source, are valued ata minimum of R439 000. Two out of the sixhouses targeted in the attack were badlydamaged.“The doors were kicked in and petrol
bombs were flung through the ceilings.“For me this has got nothing to do with
politics, this is just criminal,” Payne said.He said attempts weremade to contact the
leadership of the Economic Freedom Front(EFF) on Sunday.
“We had to contact them to explain thatthis is private property, it has nothing to dowith the gripe they might have.“We have nothing do to with their argu-
ment, but this is really an unruly bunchwhich causes big division between the resi-dents of Kalkfontein and the residents inVrygrond,” Payne said.
Organised by the EFFThepolice confirmed thatmanyof the peo-
ple involved in the protest were not residingin neighbouring areas but could not confirmwhether they had any political ties to theEFF.Plato, who met with the deputy minister
of police in Khayelitsha on Monday, wherea similar land invasion incident issue is be-ing dealt with, said many local residents in-formed him EFF leaders helped organisedthe land invasion in Kalkfontein.“They are unhappy with the manner in
which the EFF had acted,” said Plato.V To page 2.

“The people now fear that others will squaton the open piece of land,” said Plato. “Theywant to know why this has to be done here, there are other pieces of vacant land else-where.”Asked about the EFF’s involvement,West-
ern Cape chairman Bernard Joseph toldTygerBurger there was no certainty EFFmembers were involved in the arson attack, but confirmed they helped organise the landinvasion.“I have heard from people this morning
(Monday) that two or three houses and achurch were burnt down,” said Joseph.
“I cannot say at this stage if our memberswere involved. However, Imust indicate ourmembers have definitely assisted the com-munityofKalkfontein inoccupying theopenpiece of land in the area.“The actual challenge in Kalkfontein is
the frustration of our people pertaining tohousing; that is the actual challenge and thatis what the council should be addressing,”Joseph said. The damage to the church he referred to
is estimated at R70 000. Church leader, pas-tor Johannes Pula, said opportunistic crimi-nals took advantage of the situation on Sun-
day night and made off with church equip-ment, instruments and chairs following thepetrol bomb attack.BenedictavanMinnen, maycomember for
human settlements, said in a statement re-leased onMonday that theCitywill not toler-ate the ongoing behaviour which is placingstrain on the City’s law enforcement agen-cies, the police and the City’s broader ser-vice delivery efforts at the expense of law-abiding residents.“The City will use every available re-
source at its disposal to prevent land inva-sions and we will make sure that those who
are responsible for any incitement to vio-lence, land invasions and other criminalacts face the full consequences of the law,”Van Minnen said. She added: “The City is investigating re-
ports of possible political interference per-taining to the Kalkfontein violence but itmust be emphasised that a trend of politicalinstigation is already visible in the attempt-ed land invasionswhichhave takenplace re-cently, including in Khayelitsha.”V Residents should contact the antiland invasionunit on 0800 225 669 if they have any informationregarding possible land invasions.

The appreciation shown by Wesbankresidents for the work they do is whatinspires two City of Cape Town sports
and recreation department employees toserve them each day.The two workers find fulfilment in the
smiles on the faces of those they serve inthis crime ridden and gang infested commu-nity.WorkersAndrea Petersen, a permanently
employed play leader at theWesbankMulti-purpose centre, and Mawabo Siwela, a vol-unteer, told TygerBurger they love servingthe community despite the challenges theyface on a daily basis.“I saw the need they have and realised
that community is where the heart is,” saidAndrea, who studied sports management atCPUT.
AppreciationShe completed her internship at the sport
and recreation centre in Sarepta, Kuils Riv-er before being appointed play leader at theWesbank Multi-purpose Centre a year ago.“I saw the community’s need and that is
where my passion grew.“What I like most about the job is when
I see the children’s faces when I rock up ata park. To see how they appreciate and re-ceive us as people who make a difference inthe community.“To me this is very rewarding; to have
this personal interaction and give them thelove they do not necessarily get at home,”Andrea said. They offer fitness programmes, a pro-
gramme for seniors and an after-school pro-
gramme for the local children in Wesbank.Mawabo, who helps Andrea with the aft-
er-school programme, told TygerBurger hefelt the need to volunteer because most ofthe children in the area are “lost”.“There is a lot of talent for sport but it is
never exposed. Having them play togetherand having fun is rewarding, it gives memore passion to be part of the sport and rec-reation department,” he said.In a statement issued last week, the City
said the success of its programmes in thecommunity are thanks to the dedication oftheir volunteers.
InvaluableCitymaycomember for community servi-
ces and special projects, Belinda Walker, said about 500 volunteers offer their time toensure various sport and recreation pro-grammes are fun and a resounding success. She added that the volunteers are the
driving force behind the City’s sporting andrecreational activities, such as its holidayprogrammes, which help to keep childrenand youth occupied productively in a safeenvironment.“Our volunteers in the sport, recreation
and amenities department are invaluable tothe success of our community programmes.Without their involvement, the City wouldbe unable to implement the various pro-grammes that are critical to keeping chil-dren stimulated, engaged, and away fromsocial ills.“They are a true example of how we can
make progress possible when we work to-gether. The department welcomes the in-volvement of community members whomay have a specific skill set or experiencethey are willing to share,” Walker said.

Surprise for soccer playersArsenal Junior Gap coaches Harry Sherman and Martin Ryley with some of the Bidi FC clubmembers in Wesbank.
RICHARD ROBERTS@richardjohn_rj
Young football players in Wesbank recei-ved a pleasant surprise when they were vi-sited by coaches from a top British footballclub recently. Two Arsenal Junior Gap coaches unex-
pectedly popped in at the Wesbank sport-field in SilversandsWay aweek ago to spoilthe local young players – all of whom aremembers of the Wesbank soccer club BidiFC.“Christmas came early (or was it late?)
for the kids from Bidi FC in Wesbank afterreceiving soccer kit from the Arsenal Juni-or Gap coaches Harry Sherman andMartinRyley,” said Joe Africa, a community deve-lopment officer at Communicare in Ruyter-wacht.“These two coaches are hosted by Com-
municare as part of an international juniorcoaching programme organised by ArsenalFC based in London,” said Africa.Africa explained that the two young men
have been in Cape Town since the middleof January, coaching children and youth inthe Communicare Soccer DevelopmentProgramme.Theyhad alsoworked at selec-
ted schools and soccer clubs in theWesternCape. The kits were organised by Harry’s mo-
ther.“Harry’smotherElli Shermanreadabout
her son’s work with the children in SouthAfrica and she noticed a need for boots.“She enthusiastically rallied some of her
friends to collect soccer kits for the kidsfrom Bidi FC,” said Africa.Elli collected a considerable amount of
soccer equipment in a very short space oftime, thanks to the generosity of her friendsand family, Africa added.International courier company DHL
transported the boxes containing the itemsfree of charge from the UK as part of theircontribution to the project, Africa explai-ned.Harry and Martin flew back home last
week.“They have shared their coaching skills
with many Cape Town children.“Not only have they shared their skills,
but also gone the extra mile by urgingfriends and family to support their initiati-ve by collecting soccer kits for clubs theyinteracted with during their visit to theWestern Cape,” Africa said.

ADurban-basedmother of two, SueBarnes, has developed re-usable sanitary pads thathave been distributed to close to 20 000 un-derprivileged girls in Kwa-Zulu Natal.Barnes recently brought this project, cal-
led Subz, to Cape Town and introduced itto a handful of schools in Belhar and Dur-banville.At each school the Subz team had a fun
facts-of-life and inspirational talk with thegirls first before the packs are handed out.The Subz concept is simple and the was-
hable clip-on pad and panties pack that Bar-nes distributes to the girls aims to helpthem deal with the challenges of menstrua-tion with dignity.Barnes says the Subz project was born
when she became aware of how manyschool days some girlsmiss per year simplybecause they cannot afford sanitary pads.V Contact [email protected] to become involvedor help donate this project.
