DEVELOPMENT: REJUVENATION OF INDUSTRIAL AREA MOOTED
Blackheath renewalRICHARD ROBERTS
@richardjohn_rj
Factory workers and business owners inthe Blackheath industrial area mightsoon be driving on better roads, impro-
ving their skill sets, or making use of a newand improved taxi rank.
These are just few of the suggestions putforward by roleplayers within the Black-heath City Improvement District (CID) re-cently in an initial report on plans to upgra-de and improve the light industrial area.
The report forms part of the City of CapeTown department of economic develop-ment’s Blackheath Business Retention and
Expansion Programme (BR&E).The programme seeks to improve indus-
trial areas across the city with the help ofthe business and factory owners. The pro-gramme is also initiated in Retreat, Philippiand Bellville, said programme coordinatorGerswhin Gouldien when addressing a sub-council meeting last week.
Key findingsThe report outlines key findings and re-
commendations which include improvingbusiness leadership in the area, upgradingimportant infrastructure, making informa-tion about skills development initiativesmore widely available, synchronising sup-
ply chain management process amongst bu-siness, as well as protecting the industrialcharacter of the area.
Gouldien said department officials went“door to door” to canvas businesses.
He told councillors the Blackheath indus-trial area is ideally located and provides jobopportunities to people from across subcou-cil 21.
Following several meetings with roleplay-ers and site visits, the plans have beendrawn up and now need implementation,Gouldien said.
He said the department and CID want tolook at how and where the subcouncil canassist in expanding business in the area.
“As we know, it is very difficult to attractbusinesses thesedays. That iswhyweratherwant to try and support the existing busi-ness in the area,” Gouldien said.
The CID, he said, indicated infrastructurerequirements such as upgrading Range Ro-ad – a main route.
Implementation“We are also looking at why we cannot ha-
ve a proper taxi rank in the area.”He saidwith the aid of the local subcouncil
these issues can be dealt with easily, alt-hough implementation would be over a peri-od of years.

Ward councillor Bert van Dalen said hewelcomed the department’s programmeand the plans.

R-klas is Dins-dagoggend geopen.Ouers wou ook die Dinsdagaand buite die
skool tou staan, dié keer om hul kinders virdie gr.1-klas in te skryf.Heelwat ma’s en pa’s het die koue Maan-
dagnag trotseer.
gebied afgevuur.
“Dis net by Hoofweg wat dit so gaan.
Goeie skool“Dis ’n baie goeie skool.
My kind is gere-
hul kind wil inskryf.

Following the recent helicopter crash in theBainskloof Pass in which two firefightingvolunteers lost their lives, the importantrole these rescue workers play in dousingblazing fires and saving lives came underthe spotlight. The two volunteers who died while bat-
tling a fire are Darrell Rea (39) and JastunVisagie (23), both Working on Fire (WOF)crew members. The two were fighting fires in the moun-
tains nearWellington when their helicoptercrashed.Several fires have hit the Cape Peninsula
over the last twomonths. One firewhich las-ted for more than four days ravaged greatparts of the SouthPeninsula.Anotherwhichlasted days broke out in the JonkershoekMountain outside Stellenbosch.Firefighters from the City of Cape Town’s
Fire and Rescue Services as well as WOF –a government funded firefighting relief andsupport organisation – incurred injuries du-ring some of these call-outs.Another group of brave individuals who
frequently put their lives in danger are themembers of theVolunteerWildfire Services.Crew leader Peter Wynne said their fire
fighters are dedicated volunteers who givetheir time to safeguard the sensitive biodi-versity of the Western Cape. There is no standard answer to the questi-
on why they’ve joined the Volunteer Wildfi-re Services, he said.“It’s about passion, discipline, training,
being with like-minded people, even aboutthe adrenaline rush.”Broadly speaking, uncontrolled fires can
be divided into structural fires and fires innature, he explained. Whereas municipal fi-
re services mostly attend to structural firesinbuildings,VolunteerWildfireServices de-als with fires in nature.Working closely with other emergency
services in managing fire on land under thecontrol of CapeNature, SANParks andothers, Volunteer Wildfire Services has log-ged over 49 000 active firefighting hours bet-ween its members.“Only with training, discipline and team-
work can we take on the challenges thatwildfires bring.
“Our training includes, amongst others, wildfire suppression, firefighting equip-ment, map work, radios, 4x4 driving skills, rope work and first aid.”Referring to the most recent massive fires
that ravaged parts of the Peninsula and Bo-land, Peter added: “We’re only doing whatwe believe in.Volunteer Wildfire Services is currently

Burglaries leave Bardale residents fearfulRICHARD ROBERTS
@richardjohn_rj
Recent burglaries have left residents livingin the Bardale Village Phase 1 security com-plex in Silversands fearing for their safety.
In one incident, home owner Darryl Dryerand his wife were asleep when two thievesbroke into their duplex.
The incident happened on Friday, 17 Aprilat about 01:45, Dryer said.
He told TygerBurger his wife first hearda noise emanating from the bathroom andwoke him up.
“She heard a noise which sounded like thetoilet door closing. She then saw the doorhandle go down,” Dryer explained.
He said he noticed the silhouette of a per-
son on one of the walls. He saw one of the burglars on the veranda
near his window and heard one fiddling in-side the bathroom.
Dryer got up and said his movement mighthave disturbed the burglars from continu-ing with their plans.
“When I looked out of my window I sawsomeone running down the road.”
Dryer said he suspects the alleged intrud-ers live in the complex.
“This is not someone who jumped overelectrical fencing,” he added.
The thieves only managed to escape withsome perfume, Dryer said.
He reported the matter to the security onduty.
Fellow resident Francois Barnies said he
also lost some of his valuables after hishouse was burgled.
When he returned home on Monday aweek ago he noticed something was not inplace. “When my wife entered the house shesaw that the kitchen cupboard doors wereopen and that the main bedroom had beenransacked. The thieves entered through thewindow.”
Both of the couple’s rings were stolen, along with a laptop, DVD player and someclothing.
Barnies told TygerBurger four otherhomes in the complex had also been brokeninto over the past few weeks.
The incident at his house, he says, was re-ported to the security, Mfuleni police andthe property managers.
According to Barnies, the electric fencesurrounding the complex is out of order. Hewas also informed that the CCTV camerasare no longer operating.
“More security personnel need to be em-ployed.
“They are too few for such a big complex,”he claims.
He said he fears the criminals may return.Bardale Village Phase 1, according to its
developers, is known as the Vanilla StreetHomeowners’ Association (VSHOA).
The managing agent of the phase is Inte-grated Housing Facilities Management.
Michael Bauer, portfolio manager for theVSHOA, was approached for comment lastweek but did not respond at the time of goingto print.

ber of families have approached him forhelp after the death of a family member.“I had many people knocking at my door
to assist with the funeral for a loved one asthey do not have any type of funeral cover,”said Christians.“We then have to run around to raise
funds and beg to have the person buried ina dignified manner. I have learned thatmany people sign off their houses as securi-ty to pay for a funeral and in the end losetheir houses.”Christians said that he wants to make
people aware of the importance of funeralcover and updating one’s will.“In the unfortunate, but certain event of
death, your family should not have to wor-ry about the money for the funeral.“That is why we have decided to have fu-
neral coversmade available from the coun-cillor’s office to members of the public.“We also are also appealing to business
and those who can afford to, to makemonthly contributions to a funeral trustfund for destitute families.“Many undertakers have scrapped the
idea of a destitute burial, leaving familymembers in a confusing situation and un-certainty when somebody dies.”Information about funeral cover will be

Cape Town musician Nevil-le D has teamed up withtwo other South African
artists to sing out against xeno-phobia.Gospel singers Judith Sephu-
ma and Patrick Duncan were inCape Town last week to recordPray, which was released onWednesday 22April.Neville origi-
nally wrote thesong for Ju-dith, who re-corded it forher gospel al-bum The Expe-rience, but thistime aroundthe song featu-res three voi-ces.Neville ex-
plains theythought thesong was veryappropriatewhen lookingat the currentsituation inSouth Africawith regards torecent xeno-phobic attacks.“It’s just really a prayer,” he
says, adding: “I don’t care whoyou pray to.” He adds that ofcourse there’smore to fixing thesituation than praying, but thethree believe it’s a good place tostart.“It’s where we get our wis-
dom,” and from there they goout and dowhat we can do in ac-tion.The reason Neville asked Pa-
trick and Judith to record thissingle is because the three ofthem have performed extensi-vely all over Africa.“As soon as it started, we real-
ly felt it,” he says, again refer-ring to the xenophobic attacksthat have been making headli-nes recently.Withmany friends fromother
African countries, xenophobiais an issue that hits close to ho-me, for all three singers, but itwould be something they feltstrongly about even if they
didn’t have friends north of theborder.“Just based on the fact they
are human beings, our bro-thers,we shouldbedoing somet-hing.”Patrick, Judith and Neville
recorded the single and the mu-sic video with the help of An-drew and Jeremy Viljoen fromDigital Forest Studios, TimLengfeld from TL Mastering,
WOW TV, whodid the videorecordings, andsponsors Eu-clid Jacobs andMark Jackson.“Everybody
came on board, free of charge, just saying: ‘Wewant to be apart of this’.”Pray was re-
leased as a mu-sic video on so-cial media plat-forms and isbeing sampledon local radiostations. Nevil-le says therehas been a lot ofinterest fromtelevision stati-ons to broad-cast the music
video and while he can’t con-firm who will pick it up, DStv’sFaith Broadcast Network alrea-dy aired the song on Sunday 26April.Neville says they decided to
record the single because they“just wanted to do something”.They want to encourage otherartists from all over the worldto add their voice to something.“There’s a lot of negativity all
over the world as far as SouthAfrica is concerned and we feltlike we wanted to show anotherside of South Africa.”He says he doesn’t want the
world to look at our country andsay: “They killed our people andnobody said anything.”Pray is available for downlo-
ad from digital stores like iTu-nes and Amazon.V Visit Neville’s Facebook page atwww.facebook.com/MR.NEVILLE.D orTwitter profile at @NevilleDMusic tohear the song.

“Sound administration remains thecornerstone to the developmentand future of sport”.
This was the message to guests at the an-nual Cape Town Sport Forum Awards even-ing delivered by executive director of theCity of Cape Town’s sport and recreation de-partment, Gert Bam.
The annual event was held on Friday 24April in the City’s banqueting hall.
Bam, a former prominent member of thenon-racial sport movement and a top schoolsports official said: “I come from the tren-ches of sport and the sport struggle in thiscountry. I fully understand sport adminis-tration.”
Sports struggle“I can tell you during the sport struggle
sound administration was the key. I there-fore encourage you to continue with thegood administration of our various codesand the results of our sportsmen and womenwill follow. What I have seen is very positiveand soon this hall will be too small to accom-modate people who want to attend this func-tion”.
Meanwhile, the Johnson Road facilitiesmanagement committee and its main an-
chor, the Rygate LFA, walked off with thelion’s share of the awards.

South African Richard Murray (Durbanvil-le) put his heart into getting a podium finishat Sunday’s Discovery World Triathlon CapeTown.
But Murray finished fourth in the end af-ter being passed by Vincent Luis in the finalkilometer of the 10km run. Olympic champi-on Alistair Brownlee won in his first raceafter returning from injury and Spain’s Ja-vier Gomez, the current World champion, fi-nished second. It was Frenchman VincentLuis who passed Murray in the final stretch. It was a bittersweet finish for Murray asfourth place was one place better than lastyear, but the athlete from Durbanville des-perately wanted to finish on the podium infront of a 1 000-strong home crowd at theGreen Point Athletics Stadium.
“It was a spectacular race. I’m a bit upsetthat I couldn’t manage a place on the podi-um, but it is one place better than last yearand I gave it my all. I was on the rivet duringthe running leg and I just couldn’t followwhen Javier and Alistair went for it near theend. I tried to keep my third place. I stillwant to finish on the podium in front of myhome crowd so badly,” said Murray.
“I am grateful for everybody who came outto support us today. I had kids runningalongside me on the route screaming my na-me and that was very special. Big up to Ja-vier, Alistair and Vincent for getting the po-dium places today. I‘m very happy to see allthe people coming out to support us. Thesport is growing and that is so important aswell.”
