Packwood House Museum is still seeking donations for their annual Attic Tag Sale. The sale, held in the Museum’s Tour Center, is one of the Museum’s most popular and successful fund-raisers. All money raised directly benefits Packwood House Museum. Items especially needed this year are holiday nutcrackers, baskets, toys, games,

puzzles, lamps, artwork, and picture frames. Other items that can be sold include books, jewelry, glass, china, kitchenware, furniture, sporting equipment, craft items – anything except for televisions, computers, and clothing, although the Museum does accept vintage accessories. Electronics and appliances will be accepted but must be in working order! All donations are tax-deductible. This year’s sale will open on Tuesday, February 10, and run every day through Saturday, February 21, except for Sunday, February 15. A well-known young man, Ron Laniewski suffered a stroke on Friday, January 9th. Ron is the Advertising

Manager for the Valley Trader and assists with catering at the Sunbury Social Club. Ron spent five hours in surgery at Geisinger Hospital. He has been moved from the intensive care unit and is now in rehabilitation. A fundraiser is being

planned for Feb. 21st at the Sunbury Social Club, on the island between Sunbury and Northumberland. Admission of $10.00 covers a spaghetti dinner 4pm-7pm and live music from 7pm-11pm. There will be a 50/50 drawing, raffles and tee shirt sales. All

proceeds will go to aid Ron. If you can’t attend the fundraiser, but would like to help, donations may be mailed to the Sunbury Social Club, 352 East Drive Sunbury, PA 17801 in care of Ann Rhineharte.

Blair, 20 is the daughter of Barron and Robin Heth-erington of Ringtown. She is a Graduate of North Schuykill High School, where she was a member of the home-coming court and was the marching band’s featured twirler for three years.

Blair is currently attending Penn State University (Penn State) for a degree in Food

Science and a minor in Horticulture. She is a mem-ber of the Food Science Club, Earth House and Ag Advocates. Blair travels throughout the state promot-ing the beekeeping and honey industries by attend-ing schools, fairs, festivals and participating in media interviews.

Blair will provide a seminar presentation at the Expo that will inform visitors on plantings and bee friendly environments that will aid the bees in the production of honey and the continuation of healthy colonies and hives.

The recent decline of honey bee population is a cause of great concern to our local farmers that rely on the bees to pollinate their crops and provide them with honey.

The shedding of hair is a normal and ongoing pro-cess for most domestic dogs and cats. Excessive shedding generally occurs in the spring and fall, with the changing of major sea-sons. Old hair is released so that new hair of the right consistency and insulation factor may grow in.

In the winter, hair pro-vides insulation from cold when fluffed up. For this reason matted hair does not

protect a dg or cat from cold. Some pets (especially cold weather breeds like huskies and Samoyeds) also have an undercoat of soft downy hair to protect from extreme cold. This undercoat may come out by the handful in the spring and fall as the new undercoat grows in. Hair also insulates from the sun in the summer to help them from overheating.

How International Trade May BeImpacting Your Local Economy

Many new jobs in local towns nationwide are com-ing from a somewhat unexpected place, according to new statistics. Local jobs nationwide are increasingly

tied to consumers and businesses abroad, say researchers.These days, international trade supports more than one

in five American jobs -- 38.1 million across the country -- ac-cording to research from Business Roundtable, an asso-ciation of chief executive officers of major U.S. companies.

Increasing evidence points to the importance of interna-tional trade to the American economy and to local businesses and communities, as the share of U.S. jobs tied to trade more than doubled from 1992 to 2011. These jobs span a range of industries from technology and agriculture across 50 states.

And recent free trade agreements have led to rap-id U.S. export growth to partner countries, according to Business Roundtable. America’s free trade partners pur-chased $733 billion in U.S. goods in 2013 -- 12.6 times more per capita than non-partner countries purchased.

What it all boils down to, say experts, is that countries that trade with the U.S. buy more American products. And increased trade drives foreign companies to create more jobs in the U.S., by locating research facilities, laboratories and plants throughout the country.

“American innovation and global competitiveness depend on our ability to trade with the rest of the world,” said Peter Cleve-land, vice president of Global Public Policy at Intel Corporation. “More than three-quarters of Intel’s revenue comes from sales outside the U.S., while roughly three-quarters of Intel’s advanced microprocessor manufacturing and R&D is done here in the U.S.”

Given these trends, Congress is currently considering new legislation that could help foster new trade agree-ments and potentially drive future growth, as well.

America’s Chief Trade Negotiator, Ambassador Mi-chael Froman, expressed support for the effort in his testimony on the 2014 Trade Agenda, “Done right, trade policy creates opportunities for American workers, farm-

ers and ranchers; manufacturers and service providers; inno-vators, creators, investors and businesses -- large and small.”

However, not everyone is sold on the pending trade agreements. Some labor groups have expressed con-cern over the impact of increased international competi-tion on domestic job creation, trade deficit reduction and the government’s ability to prevent currency manipulation.

The current installment features the 2014 Susquehanna Greenway Photo Contest winners, an exhibition curated by the Lewisburg-based nonprofit, which advocates for public and private efforts to conserve and protect the Susquehanna River Watershed. The Greenway’s Photo Contest, now in its fifth year, is a celebration of the breathtaking landscapes and 70-plus communities along the Susquehanna River.
