The Big Idea
If you give kids resources, relationships,
and opportunities you can make a huge
impact.
You must be close enough to feel the
pain and frustration young people feel to
understand what they need and how to
help.
Once we have a better understanding of
the needs, we have to commit to get
things in place to respond.
The response shows young people that
they can rely on us and that we are
there for them.
In that relationship we can influence
their lives for long term sustainable
change.
Then they can change the world.
You need to
be consistent
and
commited.
We need 18 adults, who can give
at least 3 hours during the school
day. At least one day a week.
The shifts are Monday -Thursday
and can be done anytime from
8:30 AM to 2:30 PM.
Imagine for a moment.Imagine you are a high school student. You
are a freshman facing the Ohio Department
of Education Graduation Tests.
Your reading and Math levels are almost
five grade levels behind where you need to
be. You are fearful of looking stupid, so you
stay quiet in class falling further and further
behind. This issue is not just creating
problems in English. It carries over
to all the other classes, because
reading is a critical part of all class
work.
You are spending time in classes you
don't understand and are goofing off
so nobody will notice that you are
struggling. The time you spend in
class is wasted.
If only there were a way for you to
get the help you need in reading.
We need
people that
have a heart
for kids, are
patient, and
willing to help
us develop a
program that
works.
What does a tutor look like?
The truth is that any caring and commited
adult can be an effective tutor. Many young
people are struggling in math and english and
just need one on one or small group time to
be able to get stronger.
It is often a matter of being there for them to
keep working till they can figure it out.
It can be a very rewarding experience.
