L'Asso dipicche e' fortemente sospetto in Nord. 2[ mi.

Entering the third quarter against the favored Nick Nickellteam, the Gartaganis squad from Canada was down only 5IMPs.A good third quarter would put them in position for anupset win and put them in the quarter-final round.Unfortunately for the Canadians, the Nickell team was also

aware of the possibilities for an upset, and they brought theirA game to the match, taking the set 49-11 and ending with acomfortable win. Both teams missed an opportunity on the second deal of the

Rod-well ruffed and played a diamond from hand to dummy’squeen and Judith Gartagainis’ king. She correctly switched toa trump, which Rodwell took in dummy. The board was played 16 times, all but one in 6] by North(you will see the exception below), and no one found the leadthat would trouble declarer the most – a trump.Who wouldthink of a trump holding a club suit such as East’s? Even on atrump lead and continuation, however, North can always take12 tricks in hearts via a double squeeze. After a trump to theace and a trump return, declarer wins in dummy, cashes the}A and ruffs a club, then cashes his high diamonds and ruffsa diamond, followed by a club ruff, diamond ruff and anotherclub ruff. This is the ending:

It isn’t known whether Hamman or Soloway considered re-doubling (that would have been plus 1880 if they sat for it, a10-IMP gain for Nickell), but perhaps Soloway was too happyto be doubled with such a good hand. Championship Diary

When Mrs.T spotted this bidding sequence she re-marked, 'Isn't that a bit amateurish to use so manybids to get to Seven Hearts?'

When Sabine Auken paid one of her infrequent visitsto the Daily Bulletin a passing acquaintance asked herwhy she wasn't playing in the Pairs.'Well, we are still in the McConnell.'A short while later her inquisitor returned with an-other question.'So why aren't you playing now?''We are a team of six.''Make sure that the Americans don't take the trophyhome this time.'(Commiserations to her teammates, Lynn Baker, LynnDeas, Beth Palmer & Kerri Sanborn - all representingthe USA!)

We were amused (it doesn't take much) to note thatone of the VuGraph commentators on Bridgebase de-scribed himself as world-class. Certainly when he iscommentating he can clear the theatre in 30 seconds!

Patsy Mehan dropped by to ask if we wanted a storyabout the best bid she had ever made. 'When wereyou at Sotheby's?' was our tactless reply.

Some of the players are known to be a little volatilefrom time to time. One of the best of them once toldoff a waiter for passing.

There is no truth in the rumour that news of the non-arrival of one of the VuGraph commentators has beengreeted with dismay by members of the InsomniacsSociety.

When I mentioned that one of my ex-wives was pre-sent at the tournament Tacchi interjected 'Well, thatdoesn't narrow it down much.'

12th WORLD BRIDGE CHAMPIONSHIPS9 - 24 June 2006

Bob exited with the }2. Had West been a good counter, hewould have known that declarer had started with no spades, four hearts and five diamonds. Therefore South had to havefour clubs and hence East had a singleton. It was thereforevital to rise with the }K (a 'crocodile') and return the }10,leaving South with another club loser. To rise with the }K was safe whether East had the }J or

}Q. South would not have started with the }A-Q-J-x, as hewould have discarded the low club on the [Q when indummy with the {K. In practice West played an automaticsecond-hand-low on the }2, East won but had only spadesleft and away went South's two club losers."It is very close whether to play the [9 at trick one," said

Bob later, "but I was concerned that East might have the [Aand the [J. It was lucky that I did not play a low spade. If I had,I would ruff East's ace, play {A, diamond to the king and dis-card two clubs on the [K, [Q.That would rely on the club fi-nesse and diamonds behaving, but then the slam would havebeen one down."
