When Sadler=s Wells clocked up the unique total of14 sires= championships in the years between 1992 and2004, it seemed highly unlikely that any modern-daystallion would ever come close to matching hisextraordinary achievements. There are already signs, though, that his son Galileo has his sights set on doingexactly that. At the age of 14, he is guaranteed to endthis year as Britain and Ireland=s champion sire by ahuge margin, in the process recording his fourthchampionship in the last five years.

I=m pleased to say that there are other ways in whichGalileo promises to follow the immaculate example setby his sire. We already know that he has made a greatstart as a sire of sires. Last week saw Teofilorepresented by the 11th stakes winner from his firsttwo crops, thanks to Paene Magnus, a colt who isintriguingly inbred 3x2 to Danehill. Teofilo=s stakeswinners feature six Group winners, headed by theGroup 1 juvenile scorers Parish Hall and Loch Garman. We have also seen New Approach take this year=sfreshman sires= title by a substantial margin, thankslargely to his unbeaten son Dawn Approach, who lookslikely to take the title of champion 2-year-old. Theowners of the 220 mares which made Galileo=s sonCape Blanco the busiest stallion in the U.S. earlier thisyear must be feeling pleased with themselves. Considering the scope of the achievements bySadler=s Wells=s sons, it is easy enough to overlook thetremendous work done by his broodmare daughters.Although he has been dislodged from top place on thebroodmare sires= list by Danehill this year, he had beenchampion sire in this division in each of the previousseven years. It is still very early days to be judging Galileo in thisrole, as his eldest daughters are still only nine years old.Galileo mares have just over 200 foals of racing age inthe Northern Hemisphere, of which 90 are 2-year-olds,so many of them are still either unraced or lightly tried.Several of them have done sufficiently well, though, tosuggest that breeders should take a look at Galileo=sdaughters at the upcoming breeding stock sales. Theywill have plenty to choose from, as there are 11 scheduled to sell at Goffs later this week, includinga winning sister to Teofilo, in foal to Lawman, and anunraced sister to the Irish Derby winner Soldier ofFortune, in foal to Fastnet Rock. Then there are 26catalogued at Tattersalls, plus another three at Arqana. Galileo=s daughters increased their total ofGroup/Graded winners to six when the progressive Leacame out on top in the GIII Commonwealth Turf S.three days ago. Each of the six is by a different stallion. Not surprisingly, in view of Galileo=s huge success withDanehill mares, it has been Danehill=s stallion sonswhich have so far exerted the biggest influence.Danehill Dancer and Holy Roman Emperor have eachsired a Group 3 winner and it was Strategic Prince, ason of Dansili, who sired La Collina, the first Group 1winner out of a Galileo mare. The Group 2 winner HardDream is by Oasis Dream, another member of theDanzig male line. A grandson of Danehill also figuresamong the sires of the first two stakes winners out ofGalileo=s Australian daughters.

Before anyone leaps to the conclusion that this is theonly route to success for a Galileo mare, I should pointout that Danzig line stallions have many more foals outof Galileo mares than stallions from other lines. Forexample, the stallions with the largest representatives(in both hemispheres) are Danehill Dancer (with 11 foals), Invincible Spirit (10), Fastnet Rock (9), Dukeof Marmalade (8), Dylan Thomas (8), Oratorio (7), OasisDream (6) and Cape Cross (6). The only interloper isKingmambo=s son Dubai Destination, with seven. American breeders should note that Saamidd, thefirst Group winner out of a Galileo mare, is by StreetCry and that Solemn, a recent winner of the GeelongClassic in Australia, is by Bernardini. Over in England,Galileo mares had high-priced 2012 yearlings by ElusiveQuality=s son Raven=s Pass and by Dubawi, whichunderlines the fact that breeders needn=t follow onenarrow path. I find it interesting that Lea is by Giant=s Causeway=sson First Samurai. It was a daughter of Giant=sCauseway who recently provided Teofilo with hissecond Group 1 winner, when Loch Garman won theCriterium International. Jim Bolger, who has enjoyed alot of success with the progeny of Galileo and his sons, has been sending plenty of Galileo mares to Giant=sCauseway=s Dewhurst Stakes-winning son IntenseFocus. Shamardal, another Giant=s Causeway stallion, has several yearlings out of Galileo mares, so this is across that we could be hearing a good deal more ofover the next few years. Cont. p5

Lea=s sire First Samurai will be available next year at afee of only $10,000. Bearing in mind that he started hiscareer with two years at $40,000 followed by two at$30,000, he clearly hasn=t fulfilled the high hopesoriginally held of him. However, the current season hasseen him represented by his first Grade I winner in thattough filly Executiveprivilege, an earner of more than$1.3 million. Executiveprivilege, together with the dualstakes winner Get Happy Mister and the GSPSonofasamurai, come from a crop of only 43 2-year-olds by the Claiborne stallion. Indeed, FirstSamurai has had only 120 runners this year, whichplaces him at a serious numerical disadvantage againstmany of the leading stallions. Coincidentally, thestallion with the most runners is none other thanGiant=s Causeway, with 324. First Samurai is one of three stallion sons of Giant=sCauseway to have enjoyed success at the highest levelthis year, the others being the Irish-based horsesFootstepsinthesand and Shamardal (who has three2012 Group 1 winners). By the way, another of Giant=sCauseway=s stallion sons, the New York-based FrostGiant, has been having a rewarding time with hisfirst-crop 2-year-olds. From 30 juveniles, he has hadnine winners, including two stakes winners, and ranksfifth among the first-crop sires. Heatseeker, anotherfirst-crop son, also has a stakes winner among his firstrunners. To get back to Lea, his second dam High Savannahhas enjoyed a very fruitful broodmare career, thanks tovarious sons of Sadler=s Wells. Starting out at thecheaper end of the market, she visited the unracedKylian to produce Lady In Waiting, winner of the G2 Sun Chariot S. Lady In Waiting=s exploits saw HighSavannah move upmarket and she produced the Group 3-winning stayer Savannah Bay to In The Wings, the stakes-placed Greenery (dam of Lea) to Galileo andthe American Grade II turf winner Grassy to El Prado.

Is Little Mike a Superstar? “The son of Spanish Steps is remarkablyconsistent, loves to race forward, either on the lead or just off the pace, can accelerate away if the pace is slow or maintain a level cruising speedif the pace is stronger. Having proved his ability to rate given theopportunity to settle into his own, manageable rhythm, Little Mike mightbe very difficult to beat going forward.” Pat Cummings, America’s Best Racing

An Unorthodox Jockey and Predictable Winner “It is easy to pick outRamon Dominguez in a crowded field. To the untrained eye, most jockeyslook the same in the saddle, but not Dominguez. Taller than your averagerider, at 5 feet 6, he sits high in the saddle, stretches his hands onto thereins in an unorthodox manner and flashes his whip in an almostexaggerated half-windmill arc. There is an easier way to spot him, too --look for who is in front at the finish.” Ryan Goldberg, New York Times

Breeder Lori Ferguson Confident Ontario Horse Racing Industry WillSurvive “As Ontario’s horse racing industry collapses and animals arebeing euthanized and slaughtered, standardbred breeder Lori Fergusonis making babies for the sport. The woman who, with former husbandMike Wade, bred, trained, raced and owned an international trottinglegend -- million-dollar winner Billyjojimbob -- is gambling the financiallygutted business will rebound and require young horses.” Mary Ormsby, TheStar.com

Caulfield cont.

Greenery was bred by the partnership of ClaiborneFarm and Adele Dilschneider. Claiborne had enjoyedprevious success with this family. The farm paid210,000gns in 1996 for High Savannah=s speedyhalf-sister Maid For Walking and this mare repaid herbuyers by producing Stroll, winner of the GI TurfClassic. An interesting fact regarding the further reaches ofGreenery=s pedigree is that this daughter of Galileo hasSamovar as her fifth dam, as does Juddmonte=sRainbow Lake. Of course, it was Rainbow Lake=sdaughter Kind who visited Galileo to produce themagnificent Frankel.

Editor=s Note: We continue to received feedback on RobWhiteley=s final TDN Op/Ed, Safari Imepasua, published inthe Nov. 5, 2012 TDN. The most recent appears below.

Dear Sir, Thank you for your candid and fresh input on whatU.S. racing should do. As a European "looking" in on the U.S., Iwholeheartedly agree with the way you summarize thegroupings within racing. I would like to say that we have the same problemhere in Europe. I live in France, but also have aperspective in that I have worked in England andIreland, and was born with horses on a farm in Sweden, which was my starting point. As an observer, I have noted that now racing/salesare more or less ruled by agents, or as Maurice Zilberused to call them, "parasites." Whenever I think back towhat Zilber observed, he predicted where we are todayvery clearly when saying that racing is slowly dyingbecause of the "innate greed" that rules man, withoutany thought of what comes next.

You touch on several points that are pertinent toEurope as well. For me, as a small breeder, one is thesize of stallion books. Some larger breeders have takencurbing measures, but if the industry is not willing todiscuss this issue and take appropriate measures, weare slowly going to sink. The most flagrant issue, in my view, is the wide-ranging differences in medication that are prevalent indifferent states within the U.S. This is a problem that ismost urgent to address with the view of ending up in azero tolerance to any from of medication. In the long run, this will preserve the breed forsoundness. I will endeavor to have your final say translated andpublished in the "Jour de Galop," the sister publicationof the TDN here in France. I would like to say thank you for your input and wishyou a long life as an "observer" of the sport that usedto be the sport of kings.

Best Regards,Gunnar Nordavist

NAICSC IMPLEMENTS BLACK-TYPEREQUIREMENTS The North American International CatalogueStandards Committee has announced a series of qualitycontrol requirements for non-listed black-type races inNorth America to come into effect January 1, 2014.The new requirements, which are compliant withguidelines required by the Society of InternationalThoroughbred auctioneers, will encompass non-listedblack-type stakes with a purse between $50,000 and$74,999, and all stakes races with a purse of $50,000or more that have a restrictions allowed by theNAICSC. The quality control measures include anAnnual Race Quality Score system for age and sexdivisions, whereby four types of speed figures will beused to produce a rating for each race. A Black-TypeRace Quality Score will be produced by taking theaverage Annual Race Quality Score over three years, and if that figure does not meet the requirement forthat age/sex category, it will lose black-type status. Arace that is not contested for two consecutive yearswill lose black-type status, and a race that has lostblack-type status must be contested two consecutiveyears while upholding the previously described scoresbefore it is eligible to regain it. Beginning in 2014,newly created races will be examined by theInternational Catalogue Standards Committee prior tothe inaugural running to determine if black-type statuswill be rewarded.

Those races must have a minimum purse of $75,000and appear in the track=s published stakes book. Newraces with purses less than $75,000 must be run twiceand achieve a satisfactory Race Quality Score. To be eligible for black-type status beginning in 2014,all stakes races in North America must meet thefollowing criteria:

$ Have a minimum purse value of $50,000distributed on the day of the race.$ Close at least 72 hours in advance of its running, have a fee paid by the owner of theentrant, and have a total purse value distributedon the day of at least $50,000. $ Have all entries by eligible for purse monies.$ Not have restrictions other than state-bred,non-winners of a sweepstakes, sales graduatesor stallions= progeny.$ Not contain a preference clause based oncriteria unrelated to the quality of the horse thatcould exclude any horse of superior quality fromcompeting.
